Best Small Gun Safes (2026): 8 Compact Picks for Handguns

Quick answer: the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is the best small gun safe in 2026. You wave an RFID fob or wristband over the lid, the door springs open and the pistol sits grip-up, so the draw is the same every time. For a current Vaultek, the Barikade Series 2 comes as a biometric or a keypad.

If you want no batteries at all, a keyed SnapSafe Lock Box is steel, a lock and a cable. For travel, the Hornady TrekLite takes two TSA combination locks. A safe you cannot open fast enough is an expensive box, so put access speed first and mount whatever you buy.

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun. Where we have not shot a specific variant ourselves, we say so in that section.

Small Gun Safes Worth Buying in 2026

A small gun safe has one job that a big safe does not: it has to open fast, in the dark, while you are not at your best. Everything else is secondary. The picks below are ordered by how well they do that, then by how much steel you get for the money.

Five of the safes that dominated this category for years are no longer made. Vaultek has replaced the 10 and 20 Series with the Barikade and the LifePod, GunVault has dropped the MicroVault XL, and Hornady has replaced the 2600KP with the 4800KP. Older roundups still recommend all of them. This one does not.

How I Test and Choose Small Safes

Every safe here is judged on the same five things: how fast it opens, whether it has a second and third way in, the steel gauge, whether the mounting hardware is real, and what happens when the battery dies.

Where I have run a unit through the full routine, I say so and give the number. That routine is 50 access attempts across clean dry hands, sweaty hands and half-asleep 3 AM attempts, timed from touch to open, plus a screwdriver and small pry bar against the door edge. On the budget biometric readers that success rate lands around 80 to 85 percent, which is why I insist on a backup key.

Where I have not had a unit in hand, I say that too, and I stay with what the manufacturer specifies and what the steel gauge tells you. I will not invent a number for a safe I have not opened. Selection also accounts for whether the model is still in the maker’s current line, because a safe you cannot buy in a year is not a recommendation.

This is the safe I point most people at, and the reason is the RFID. You wave a fob, a wristband or a sticker over the lid and the door springs open. There is no keypad to find in the dark and no finger to place correctly while your hands are shaking. Hornady ships three tags with it, so one can live on your watch strap and one on your keyring.

The door opens upward and the gun sits grip-up, which means the draw is the same motion every time. That repeatability is the whole point of a bedside safe. A box that opens sideways into a wall, or that makes you fish a pistol out flat, costs you the second you were trying to save.

It backs the RFID with a keypad and a barrel key, so there are three ways in and no single point of failure. The batteries are a known weak point on any electronic safe, and this one warns you before they go rather than after.

It is the most widely stocked safe on this page by a wide margin, which matters more than it sounds. Availability is what decides whether the model you read about is still buyable in a year.

Best For: Anyone who wants the fastest repeatable access on a nightstand.

Vaultek Barikade Series 2 keypad pistol safe

2. Vaultek Barikade Series 2, Best Biometric Small Safe

  • Capacity: 1 to 2 handguns
  • Lock: sold as biometric or keypad
  • Backup: backup key included
  • Format: slim clamshell, mounts flat or vertical
  • Mounting: pre-drilled, hardware included

Pros

  • Slim enough to mount under a desk
  • Backlit keypad readable in the dark
  • Two lock versions at different prices
  • Current Vaultek line, not a runout

Cons

  • Fingerprint reader wants a clean finger
  • Not a fire-rated container
  • Interior suits pistols, not much else

Vaultek replaced the old 10 and 20 Series with the Barikade, and it is the model to buy now if you want their build quality. The Series 2 is the larger of the two, and it takes a full-size pistol with a light mounted without a fight.

It comes in two versions and the choice is genuinely yours. The biometric reads a print in well under a second when the finger is clean and dry. The keypad version costs less, never fails to read, and is the one I would hand to someone who works with their hands. Both keep a backup key.

The shape is what sells it. It is flat enough to bolt under a desk or to the side of a nightstand rather than sitting on top of one, which keeps it out of sight and still leaves the draw straight.

Buy the current Barikade rather than a discounted 20 Series. The older safes still turn up at a couple of retailers, but Vaultek sells them as refurbished stock now, and support follows the current line.

Best For: Buyers who want a current Vaultek and a choice of lock type.

Hornady RAPiD Safe keypad and RFID pistol safe

3. Hornady RAPiD Safe 4800KP, Best for Two Handguns

  • Capacity: 2 handguns
  • Interior: 10.5 in L x 12 in W x 2.9 in D
  • Access: RFID, keypad and key
  • Format: wide flat body, mounts under or inside furniture
  • Mounting: pre-drilled, hardware included

Pros

  • Fits two full-size pistols flat
  • Same RFID system as the Night Guard
  • Mounts under a desk or drawer
  • Deep retailer stock keeps prices honest

Cons

  • Too wide for a small nightstand
  • Flat layout means guns lie sideways
  • No fire rating

The 4800KP is what you buy when one handgun is not the whole picture. Two full-size pistols lie flat side by side, and there is room alongside for spare magazines and documents without stacking anything on top of a gun.

It runs the same RFID system as the Night Guard, so if you already carry a Hornady tag the two safes work off the same habit. Keypad and key back it up.

The trade is footprint. This is a wide, flat box designed to bolt under a desk, inside a closet shelf or into the base of a wardrobe rather than perch on a nightstand. Measure the span before you order.

This replaced the 2600KP in Hornady’s line. If you find a 2600KP listed cheap, understand that it is old stock and the accessories and warranty now follow this model.

Best For: Households storing two handguns in one place.

Cons

  • No biometric option on this model

The MiniVault is the safe that made this category, and the four-button No-Eyes pad is why it is still here. You rest your hand on the moulded pad and press a combination by finger position. You never look at it, which is exactly what you want when the room is dark.

It is 16-gauge steel, which is the floor I would accept on a small safe, and it costs less than most biometric boxes that use thinner metal. Paying for a fingerprint reader wrapped in 18-gauge steel is the wrong trade.

There is no app, no Bluetooth and nothing to pair. For a lot of buyers that is the appeal. The failure modes on this safe are a flat battery and a lost key, and both have obvious fixes.

GunVault still sells the MiniVault, MicroVault and MultiVault. The MicroVault XL that older roundups recommend is no longer in their line, so buy from the current range.

Best For: Anyone who wants mechanical simplicity with a keypad.

Vaultek LifePod portable pistol safe with keypad and fingerprint reader

5. Vaultek LifePod, Best Portable and Travel Safe

  • Capacity: 1 handgun and accessories
  • Lock: keypad, with biometric on the 2.0
  • Body: weather-resistant polymer shell
  • Travel: meets airline lockable-case rules
  • Security: takes a steel tether cable

Pros

  • Light enough to carry every day
  • Weather resistant for truck storage
  • Tether cable defeats a grab and run
  • Doubles as a range and document case

Cons

  • Polymer body is not pry proof
  • Not a substitute for a bolted safe
  • Sizes overlap confusingly across the range

The LifePod is the one you take with you. It is a polymer clamshell rather than a steel box, which sounds like a downgrade until you understand what it is for. It stops a curious passenger, a hotel cleaner and a child. It does not stop a determined thief with time, and Vaultek does not claim it does.

It is weather resistant, so it survives a truck bed and a wet range day, and it takes a steel tether so it cannot simply be lifted out of a car. Untethered, a portable safe is a handle for carrying your gun to someone else’s house.

It also satisfies the lockable hard-case rule for checked airline baggage, which is the reason a lot of people buy one in the first place.

The range is wide and the naming is confusing, so buy on interior size rather than model number. The card below lists what our retailers hold across the line.

Best For: Travel, the range, the car and anywhere you cannot bolt a safe.

GunVault SpeedVault vertical drop-down pistol safe

6. GunVault SpeedVault, Best Vertical Bedside Mount

  • Capacity: 1 handgun
  • Format: vertical body, drop-down drawer
  • Lock: keypad or biometric versions
  • Backup: override key
  • Mounting: designed to be screwed to a vertical surface

Pros

  • Drops the grip straight into your hand
  • Hides on the side of furniture
  • Takes almost no flat space
  • Draw is the same every time

Cons

  • Must be mounted to work at all
  • One handgun and nothing else
  • Thinner steel than a bolted box

The SpeedVault solves a problem the box-shaped safes do not. It mounts vertically against the side of a nightstand, a desk or a bed frame, and when it unlocks the drawer drops down and presents the pistol grip-first. Your hand closes on the grip in the firing position without any adjustment.

Because it hangs on a vertical face it uses no usable surface and it is close to invisible from the front of the room. That is the second reason people buy it.

It only works mounted. Unmounted it is a small metal box with a drawer that falls open, so treat the screws as part of the product rather than an optional extra.

Keypad and biometric versions exist. The keypad is the one I would choose for a safe you reach for half asleep.

Best For: Bedside access where there is no room for a box on top.

SnapSafe keyed steel lock box with security cable

7. SnapSafe Lock Box, Best Keyed Safe With No Batteries

  • Capacity: 1 handgun
  • Steel: 16-gauge body on the large sizes
  • Lock: keyed, no electronics
  • Security: includes a steel tether cable
  • Travel: meets airline lockable-case rules

Pros

  • Nothing to charge or pair
  • Cheapest way into real steel
  • Cable anchors it inside a car
  • Several sizes on the same design

Cons

Every list of small safes needs one option with no battery in it, and this is mine. A keyed SnapSafe box is 16-gauge steel, a lock and a cable, and there is nothing in it that can go flat, lose a pairing or forget a fingerprint.

That makes it the wrong safe for a nightstand and the right safe for almost everywhere else. In a car it cables to a seat frame. In a closet it holds the gun that is not your bedside gun. On a flight it satisfies the lockable hard-case rule.

It is also the cheapest honest entry point in this category. You are buying steel and a lock rather than steel, a lock, a circuit board and an app.

Watch the keyed-alike versions if you are buying more than one. Convenient for you, and a slightly wider key pattern for everyone else.

Best For: Buyers who want steel and a key with nothing to maintain.

Barska portable biometric compact pistol safe

8. Barska Portable Biometric Compact, Best Budget Biometric

  • Capacity: 1 handgun
  • Lock: fingerprint reader with backup key
  • Format: compact portable box
  • Mounting: pre-drilled base

Pros

  • Fingerprint access at a low price

Barska is where biometric access stops being expensive, and the compromise is exactly where you would expect it. The reader works, and it is slower and fussier than the readers on safes costing several times more. A clean dry finger and a square press get you in.

Treat the backup key as part of the plan rather than an emergency. On budget biometrics the key is not a last resort, it is the second access method you will actually use sometimes.

The steel is thinner than the GunVault and Hornady boxes, so mount it and cable it. A light safe that lifts off a shelf offers a burglar convenience rather than resistance.

For a gun that needs locking but is not your defensive gun, it does the job for little money.

Best For: A first biometric safe on a tight budget.

The TrekLite is built for moving a handgun rather than storing one. Two TSA combination locks mean no keys to lose in an airport, and the polycarbonate body keeps the weight down enough that carrying it is not a decision.

It is the right tool for checked baggage, a glovebox, a range bag or a hotel drawer. It is the wrong tool for a nightstand, because working two combination dials in the dark is slow and you will not do it well under pressure.

Polycarbonate is a deliberate choice, not a corner cut. It resists a screwdriver and a curious hand, and it does not pretend to resist a pry bar. Cable it to something fixed and it stops the opportunist theft that actually happens.

Sold in a couple of sizes under both the Hornady and SnapSafe names, which is why the card below shows both labels.

Best For: Flying, driving and any time the gun leaves the house.

This is the floor. Below the Bulldog you are into unbranded boxes with pot-metal latches, and I would not put a gun in one. The Bulldog gives you a working electronic lock, a key override and enough steel to stop a child and a casual visitor.

What it does not give you is pry resistance. The steel is thinner than the GunVault and the Hornady boxes, and a motivated adult with a bar gets in. Judge it against a drawer, which is what most people are upgrading from.

Mount it. On a safe this light the mounting is doing more of the security work than the steel is.

For locking a gun up so it is not simply lying in a nightstand, it is enough, and it costs less than a decent holster.

Best For: Locking up a gun on the smallest sensible budget.

Which Small Safe Fits Your Situation

The right small safe depends less on the safe than on where it lives and who else is in the house. These are the situations people actually buy for.

A gun beside the bed

Speed and repeatability win. Take the Night Guard for touch-free RFID on the surface, or the SpeedVault if there is no room on top and you can mount to the side. Avoid anything with a combination dial.

A desk or an office drawer

The Barikade Series 2 is flat enough to mount under the desk rather than take up the drawer, and the MiniVault fits inside one. Mount to the furniture, not just into the drawer, or the whole drawer walks.

Children in the house

Every safe here keeps a child out, so choose on your own access speed and then mount it properly. The failure in a house with children is almost never the lock. It is the gun that was left out because the safe was slow or awkward.

A car, a truck or the range

The LifePod and the TrekLite are built for this, and the SnapSafe box does it for less. The cable matters more than the box does. A safe sitting loose on a seat is a container with a handle.

Flying with a handgun

Airlines want a lockable hard-sided case that only you can open. The TrekLite and the LifePod both meet that, and the TrekLite uses combination locks so there is no key to lose in transit. Check your airline’s own wording before you travel, because it varies.

Renting, or moving often

Bolting into a wall is not always allowed. Cable the safe to something structural instead, such as a bed frame or a closet rod bracket. A cable through a fixed anchor is far better than an unmounted safe, and it leaves no holes behind.

Small Gun Safe Buyer’s Guide

Biometric vs Keypad vs RFID

Biometric (fingerprint) is the fastest access method. Sub-one-second open times from Vaultek and competitive models. The downside is reliability. Wet, dirty, or cold fingers can cause misreads, especially on budget scanners. Premium scanners from Vaultek read correctly 95%+ of the time. Budget scanners (Barska) hit about 80-85%. Always have a backup method.

Keypad safes are the most reliable. They work every time regardless of finger condition. The trade-off is speed. A 4-6 digit code takes 2-5 seconds to enter. In a home defense scenario at 3 AM, that feels like an eternity. Practice your code in the dark until it is muscle memory.

RFID splits the difference. Tap a fob or card to the reader and the safe opens in about one second. The Hornady system is the best RFID implementation on this list. Keep the fob on your nightstand or keychain and access is nearly instant. Downside: if the fob is not within reach, you are locked out of the fast method.

Mounting is Non-Negotiable

Every small safe on this list weighs under 20 pounds. That means a burglar picks it up and walks out with it. Every single one ships with mounting hardware or a security cable. Use it. Bolt the safe to a shelf, the inside of a drawer, or the floor. If bolting is not possible (rental apartment), use the steel cable to anchor it to something heavy or fixed. A mounted 8-pound safe is harder to steal quickly than an unmounted 20-pound one.

Steel Gauge in Small Safes

14-gauge is the gold standard for small safes and you will find it on the Hornady models. 16-gauge is solid and covers the Vaultek lineup. 18-gauge is the budget tier, found on the GunVault, Barska, and Bulldog. The thinner the steel, the easier it is to pry open. For a nightstand safe that might be your only line of defense, spend the extra money for 14 or 16-gauge.

Measure Your Gun First

Interior dimensions are everything. A full-size handgun with a weapon light and red dot takes up significantly more space than the bare gun. Measure your pistol with all accessories attached, then compare to the interior dimensions listed for each safe. The Vaultek Barikade Series 2 fits most full-size pistols, including one with a light mounted. The Hornady Night Guard fits one full-size gun flat. If you plan to store a spare magazine alongside the gun, account for that too.

What to Avoid in a Small Gun Safe

Single-Access-Method Safes

If a small safe only has a fingerprint reader and nothing else, skip it. Biometric scanners fail. They fail when your fingers are wet, when they are cold, when you are half asleep and pressing at the wrong angle. Every safe worth buying has at least two ways in: biometric plus keypad, RFID plus key, or some other backup. The Vaultek lineup gets this right with four access methods on every model. A single-method safe is a locked box you cannot open when it matters most.

Unmounted Safes

I keep saying this because people keep ignoring it: a 7-pound safe sitting loose on your nightstand is a grab-and-go theft item. It takes a burglar about 4 seconds to pick it up and walk out. Every safe on this list ships with mounting hardware or a steel cable. Use it. Bolt it to a shelf. Cable it to a bed frame. Lag-screw it into a stud. An unmounted small safe is not a safe. It is a portable lockbox with a battery.

Amazon No-Name Brands Under $50

Search “gun safe” on Amazon and you will find dozens of safes for $30-50 with biometric scanners and 4.5-star ratings. Most of them have 20-gauge steel you can flex with your hands, fingerprint readers that work about half the time, and locks that can be defeated with a paperclip. The Bulldog on this page is the absolute floor for what I would trust. Anything cheaper is security theater. And if even that is beyond the budget, Project ChildSafe gives trigger locks away at no cost, and a free trigger lock does more to prevent unauthorized access than a cheap safe a teenager opens with a screwdriver.

Safes That Are Too Small for Your Gun

A full-size handgun with a weapon light and red dot optic is significantly larger than the bare gun. Measure your pistol with all accessories attached before you buy. The Barikade Series 2 takes most full-size guns, and it stays workable with a light attached. The Hornady Night Guard and the 4800KP have enough depth for a Glock 17 with a TLR-7A mounted. Check interior dimensions, not exterior. Interior is what matters.

Mechanical Locks and Skipping Batteries Entirely

Two names come up constantly in this category that I have not given a pick to: Fort Knox and V-Line. Both build small pistol boxes around a Simplex mechanical pushbutton lock, which uses no electricity at all. There is no battery to die, no circuit board to fail and no fingerprint to misread, and you can work the buttons by feel in the dark.

They are a genuinely good answer for a bedside box, and the reason they are not ranked above is simple: none of our retailers carry them, so I cannot show you a live price or stand behind availability. If the no-battery approach appeals, the keyed SnapSafe box on this page is the version I can actually source, and a Simplex-locked box is worth looking at direct from the maker.

FAQ: Best Small Gun Safes

What is the best small gun safe for a nightstand?

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard. It opens from an RFID fob, wristband or sticker, so you never have to find a keypad or place a finger correctly in the dark, and the door opens upward with the pistol grip-up. If there is no room on top of the nightstand, the GunVault SpeedVault mounts to the side and drops the grip into your hand.

Do small gun safes actually stop theft?

They stop the theft that actually happens. A small safe reliably stops children, guests and an opportunist going through drawers. None of them stop a determined thief with a pry bar and time, and no honest maker claims otherwise. What decides the outcome is mounting: bolted or cabled to something structural, a small safe is a real obstacle, and sitting loose on a shelf it is a box with a handle.

Are biometric gun safes reliable?

Premium fingerprint readers are reliable the large majority of the time with a clean dry finger. Budget readers land closer to 80 to 85 percent in my testing, and they get worse with sweat, cold or an off-angle press. Every safe worth buying keeps a keypad or a key behind the reader, and on a budget biometric you should treat that backup as a normal way in rather than an emergency.

How long do the electronics last?

Batteries are the part that fails, not the circuit board. Most small safes run months on a set, and the good ones warn you before the batteries go rather than after. Change them on a schedule instead of waiting, keep the override key somewhere you can reach without opening the safe, and test the backup method a couple of times a year.

Should I mount a small gun safe?

Yes, and it is not optional. An unmounted small safe weighs little enough to be carried out and opened later at leisure. Bolt it to a shelf, a stud or the frame of the furniture, or run the supplied cable through something structural if you rent and cannot drill. On the lightest safes the mounting is doing more of the security work than the steel.

What steel gauge should a small safe have?

Sixteen gauge is the floor I would accept. Under that you are into steel you can flex with your hands, which means the door edge can be sprung with a screwdriver. Be wary of a cheap safe that spends its budget on a fingerprint reader wrapped in thin metal. Thicker steel with a plain keypad is the better trade.

Can a small safe hold a full-size handgun?

Most can, but measure the gun as you actually carry it. A full-size pistol with a weapon light and a red dot is substantially bigger than the bare gun, and interior depth is what runs out first. Check the interior dimensions rather than the exterior, and add room if you want a spare magazine in there too.

Is a safe with no batteries better?

For some people, yes. A keyed lock box or a mechanical pushbutton lock has nothing to charge, pair or misread, and it cannot fail at the worst moment because of a flat cell. The trade is speed, since a key is slower than a fingerprint or an RFID tag. A keyed box is a strong choice for a car, a closet or travel, and a poor one for the safe you reach for half asleep.

How fast do small safes actually open?

RFID and a good fingerprint reader both put you into the safe in about a second. A keypad takes a few seconds and is slower again in the dark unless the buttons are backlit or moulded so you can work them by feel. Combination dials are the slowest by a wide margin, which is why they belong on a travel box rather than a bedside safe.

Should I just buy a full-size safe instead?

They solve different problems. A full-size safe protects a collection against fire and a serious break-in, but it is slow to open and it lives wherever it fits. A small safe exists to keep one gun both secured and reachable in seconds. Plenty of people end up owning both: the full-size safe for storage, and a small one beside the bed.

The Bottom Line

For most people the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is the right small gun safe. RFID access is the fastest reliable way into a box in the dark, it keeps a keypad and a key behind that, and more of our retailers stock it than anything else here.

If you want a current Vaultek, the Barikade Series 2 comes as a biometric or a keypad and mounts flat under a desk. For two handguns in one place, the 4800KP. For mechanical simplicity, the GunVault MiniVault and its No-Eyes pad. For no electronics at all, a keyed SnapSafe box.

Whatever you choose, mount it. An unmounted small safe is luggage, and the mounting hardware in the box is doing as much work as the steel is.
