The Rock Island Armory GI Standard has been a star on this list for some time. It’s kind of the definitive cheap 1911 pistol.
Rock Island handguns are basic as hell, to look at, but nobody cares. It’s a .45 Caliber handgun that shoots straight and comes with a rubbed through patina on that parkerized finish. It is a truck gun, or a general purpose pistol, and spends exactly zero time posing at the range.
The base model was always a great handgun for the money with the best budget bare bones approach. But Rock Island has evolved beyond this too, and doesn’t just offer the best 1911 pistol options in this price range chambered in the 45 ACP cartridge.
You get a steel slide and barrel, a classic Government Model profile, and a tough parkerized finish. It uses a traditional single action trigger, standard guide rod and simple GI sights. The front sight is small, the rear sight is minimal, and your accuracy depends heavily on your sight picture.
Reliability is the headline.
I have run 200–300 rounds of .45 ACP ball through individual pistols without a stoppage. Slide to frame fit is loose enough to run dirty and tight enough to hold decent groups. It is not a match grade bull barrel setup, but it does not need to be.

The full-size Girsan MC1911 Government semi-auto stays fairly faithful to the original GI Government Model 1911, from the trigger to the arched mainspring housing. This is a classic 1911, without the classic 1911 price tag.
You do get premium touches, like the three-hole skeletonized trigger and skeletonized hammer with this Girsan MC1911. The low-slung Picatinny rail offers a mounting point for a light or laser if the Novak sights don’t do it for you and you get black checkered grips.
The Girsan MC1911 brings a match vibe to the cheap 1911 space. The first thing you notice is the trigger. It has a smooth take up, clean break and positive reset. The sight picture is better than typical GI setups and some models get a fiber optic front sight.
Machining is tidy and the fit and finish beat expectations at this price. The grip texture gives your front strap and rear sight line up some help, the thumb safety is positive, and the pistol balances well in the hand.
On the range I have seen groups from the MC1911 that rival much more expensive guns. Slide and barrel lockup is consistent and the pistol feeds .45 ACP cleanly across quality magazines. If you want a cheap 1911 that leans toward best competition rather than just “range toy”, this is the one.

SDS Imports has concentrated on the price point and found a faithful reproduction of the original design 1911 semi automatic pistol, and this more modern interpretation, both courtesy of Tisas Zig in Turkey.
Cute touches include a cerakote finish and black starburst grips as an option, instead of the classic blued frame and fixed sights. And a chrome plated barre, while you can opt for the Novak sights and rounded heel that gives a notional concealed carry afavntage.
SDS also does a straight reproduction of the gun you know and love with a Series 70 firing mechanism. There isn’t much more to say, apart from that, again, we like the price of these guns that are basically a rebranded Tisas 1911s.

A clean used 1911 from Springfield Armory, Colt, Ruger SR1911, or even older Kimber pistols is almost always a better buy than a brand new bottom tier gun.

Now there’s always that danger of buying a lemon, but sometimes you’ve got to roll the dice right?
BEST 1911s UNDER $700 — WHERE VALUE STARTS TO GET REAL
The jump from $500 to $700 is big. This is where the platform starts to feel genuinely refined. You still get the classic full size 45 ACP layout, but machining tightens up, small parts improve and the whole pistol feels more deliberate.
Below are three standouts worth mentioning, even on a cheap 1911 page, because they show you what you gain if you move up a tier.

The Ruger SR1911 Government Model costs a little more than our self-imposed limit these days, which is why it didn’t win. But if you can find the extra then it is certainly worth every cent.
Like many others it has evolved into a line up, ranging from this humble entry model through to the Doug Koenig specials with target tuned adjustable rear sights. But they are 3 times the price.
The base model is lightweight thanks to an aluminum frame with a Tungsten cerakote finish and comes with a titanium feed ramp, G10 grips and more premium touches.You can find a Ruger SR11 with a stainless steel slide and frame, too, so check the details if you want the lighter or stronger gun. Sometimes the aluminum gun is marked as the lightweight SR1911, but not always.
Either way, slide to frame fit is tighter than most cheap pistols, the trigger pull is predictable, and the sights are clean and visible.
On the range the gun tracks straight. Recoil is smooth, the muzzle returns naturally to target, and accuracy is strong from 7 to 15 yards. If you want a pistol that will outlast most of the cheap crowd, this is it.
Of course the Ruger comes with that big brand build quality, quality control and a lifetime guarantee you can count on.
7. Smith & Wesson CSX E

Is this 9mm micro-compact even a 1911 at all? I mean, no, but it does have a lot of the common features and it’s a modern day tribute that I like, so we’re including it.
The 1.2lb lightweight might look like any other polymer framed compact carry gun to the untrained eye, but look closer and you see some seriously cool features. It’s an aluminum alloy frame with polymer backstraps, there’s a manual safety, beavertail grip, loaded chamber indicator and a top notch trigger safety.
There’s a lot going on here, and the tiny Smith & Wesson 9mm is kind of laid out like a 1911, even though it isn’t one. There’s a 3.8 inch barrel version, too, which we like a lot.
8. Kimber Custom GFO

The Kimber Custom II GFO is basically a standard Custom II with a green fiber-optic front sight and a slightly different vibe. That’s it. If you’re expecting a completely different gun, you won’t find one. What you do get is a proper big-name 1911 that looks sharp, shoots well enough, and somehow still shows up around the $620–$650 mark if you shop hard. For a Kimber, that’s almost shocking.
The sight picture is the standout feature here. The GFO grabs your eye fast and makes the pistol feel more modern than the usual three-dot setup. The trigger is classic Kimber: clean break, light take-up, short reset. When everything lines up, it’s a great shooter.
And now the honesty. Kimber’s reputation isn’t spotless. Some Custom II pistols run like sewing machines from day one, and some act like they need a gunsmith’s pep talk before they settle in. I’ve seen extractors that needed love, magazines that caused nose-diving, and a few break-in periods that were a little longer than they should be. That’s part of the Kimber story.
But when you get a good one — and plenty of people do — you understand why the brand has the following it does. The machining looks good, the fit feels refined, and the gun carries a certain prestige that the sub-$500 imports just don’t have. You feel like you’re holding a “real” 1911 from a major US brand, even if the Custom II isn’t perfect.
For the price these GFO models sometimes hit, it’s one of the more interesting buys in the mid-tier 1911 world. Not flawless, not cheap-cheap, but definitely appealing if you want a recognizable name without stepping into Dan Wesson or Wilson Combat money.
9. Taurus 1911

The full size Taurus PT1911 is slightly more than $500, but these budget 1911s come with some premium features that some folks think justify the extra $50.
Essentially the Taurus PT1911 is a clone of the US Military 1911 with a 5 inch barrel and was announced in 2005. It has evolved little since then, but the Brazilian budget 1911 has a solid market share in this price range.
Novak style sights join a high quality hammer forged barrel and stainless slide. It’s all ordnance-grade stainless steel, the matte blued finish is well done and you get touches like a lowered and flared ejection port and magwell, and skeletonized trigger. We like the black checkered grips and simple but upgradeable front sight too.
They do look like premium gun touches on budget 1911s.
Get some G10 grips, a new ambi safety, maybe an extended slide stop and fiber optic front sight, upgrade your 1911 pistol as you go and this could turn this Taurus PT1911 into a nice project.
Not everybody loves Taurus 1911 reliability, including the South American law enforcement officers that often opt for revolvers instead. But put 1000 rounds downrange and you’ll probably be able to trust your Taurus budget 1911s for home defense.
10. Sig Sauer P938

This diminutive Sig P938 just about slips into the micro-compact class.. There it offers a different hammer fired approach and metal construction in a sea of polymer pistols.
Now this is pure entry level gun at a great price. You can spend around $800 on your Sig P938 semi auto pistol pretty easily and more if you really try with the most ornate stainless steel slide and frame finish.Or a gray cerakote slide, or blued & walnut grip finishes on your micro semii-auto 45 pistol.
You only get 6+1 rounds, but this is a slimline 1911 that is very easy to conceal and has more than enough ammunition for most defensive encounters. Use the right hollow points and it’s enough in any case.
11. Springfield Armory Mil-Spec Defender Series

The forged carbon steel frame and slide are the classic GI configuration. And it’s good. Really good. The basics are beyond the world of the best budget 1911s and this is accurate and reliable. Those are good starting points for affordable 1911s and we like the beavertail safety here.
Match-Grade Barrel And Basic Parts & Accessories
Even the cold hammer forged 5 inch barrel is match-grade, so it’s accurate amd reliable. The ejection port is flared and you get a lot of trickle down tech from Springfield’s more expensive guns. Right down to the full length guide rod, slide serrations and ambi safety. The extended grip safety feels nice in the hand as well.
For this price range, that’s awesome. It’s a great gun and an even better starter gun for a DIY 1911 build.
The Springfield Loaded 1911 is a great 1911 at a much higher price.
For less than $000, this Springfield 1911 Defender is the one you wanted for home defense. At $600+, it’s still pretty close and it’s great for home defense.
12. Kimber Micro 9

The Kimber Micro 9 is another non purist’s 1911, because there is no grip safety and that’s just the start if we’re honest.
But we’ve pretty much decided it doesn’t matter here and this is a carry friendly 1911 style pistol for around $600 that slips into your pocket.
And that’s a good thing with this single action pistol.
Now the budget friendly Micro 9 does not enjoy the same cast iron reputation for reliability that you get with the Kimber Ultra Carry 1911 from the Custom Shop. But then this small pistol is much, much cheaper and comes with a quality fit and finish…
You can spend a lot more. This is the base version with a stainless finish, but you should check out the more expensive alternatives here with slide cuts and custom touches.
13. Auto Ordnance Thompson M1911A1

The Auto Ordnance M1911A1 is a Series 80 semi-automatic pistol with a single action only operating system and basic fixed rear sight.
You can spend more on a hard chrome finish and the fancy touches that separate this full size pistol from more expensive fare. But you can also just buy one of these affordable 1911s and shoot it for years, probably without any major trauma.
The only problem is it is more money now, and we don’t think these are the best budget 1911s in this new price range.

How to choose the right pistol without wasting money
On paper most cheap 1911s look the same. Steel frame, 5 inch barrel, single action trigger. In practice, small details decide whether your gun feels like a clunky tool or a smooth, reliable pistol you keep for life.
Here are the parts that matter most.
FRAME MATERIAL: CAST, FORGED, OR ALUMINUM
- Cast frame
Common on Rock Island Armory and some imports. Durable enough for most shooters, cheaper to build, but not as tough as forged if you plan a lot of hard use. - Forged frame
This is ideal, especially under $500. Tisas is the standout here. Forged frames bring better long term durability and handle hotter loads with fewer worries. - Aluminum frame
Mostly used on lightweight carry guns, not true cheap 1911s. They carry well but have a shorter service life with constant full power loads.
SLIDE TO FRAME FIT
A lot of people rack a 1911 slide and judge tightness. That is not the best metric. A budget gun should not be extremely tight. A little play helps reliability when machining is not perfect.
What you want:
- minimal vertical movement
- minimal barrel hood wiggle
- a consistent lockup at the front
Most Tisas and Girsan pistols pass this test. Rock Island Armory usually does too, and SDS Imports is generally acceptable.
BARREL QUALITY
A good barrel has consistent rifling, a smooth ramp, snug bushing lockup and a clean transition from feed ramp to chamber. Tisas, Girsan, Springfield, Ruger, and Colt tend to do this well. Rock Island barrels are a little rougher but still perfectly usable.
You do not need a true match grade bull barrel on a cheap gun. You just need consistent lockup.
TRIGGER QUALITY
The single action trigger is the soul of the 1911. Even on cheap pistols it is usually better than most striker fired polymer pistols.
On a budget gun the trigger should:
- break cleanly
- have moderate take up
- reset positively
- sit around 4–6 pounds
Tisas and Girsan often have the best triggers under $500. Rock Island can be heavy, but it is easy to improve. If you upgrade one thing on a cheap 1911, a light trigger job or drop in kit is where the magic happens.
SAFETIES AND CONTROLS
A proper 1911 should have:
- a grip safety that works every time
- a positive thumb safety
- a slide stop that locks back reliably
- a well fitted mainspring housing
Cheap guns sometimes ship with mushy safeties or marginal slide stops. Tisas and Girsan usually get this right. Rock Island is solid, if a little basic.
SIGHTS
