Intro

Wilson Combat handguns are some of the best pistols in the world. It’s really that simple.

The Berryville, Arkansas company started out as Wilson’s Gun Shop in 1977. Bill Wilson set up shop in the family jewelry business and brought many of the same principles to the gunsmithing industry.

He started out using top tier parts to tune customer 1911s, but by 1983 he was making his own components.

The first complete Wilson Combat 1911 pistols hit the market in 1996. Since then, the company has more or less established itself as the best handgun manufacturer and tuner in the world.

If you can afford them.

Wilson Combat handguns are seriously expensive, but they are peak engineering and owners claim they’re worth every cent of that high price.

Here are our favorite Wilson Combat pistols, 1911s and custom pistols with a striker fired action.

Wilson Combat Pistols Explained: The Families

Before looking at specific pistols, it helps to understand how Wilson structures their lineup.

Classic 1911 series. These are traditional single stack pistols such as the CQB, Protector, and Classic. They follow the original John Browning design closely, with hand fitted barrels, steel frames, and the kind of triggers that remind you why the 1911 still exists.

X-Frame double stack series. This is where things get modern. Pistols like the EDC X9, SFX9, and SFT9 use proprietary high capacity magazines but keep the straight back 1911 trigger pull that shooters love.

Solid Frame: The aluminum SF model does away with grips, the beavertail grip safety and more. It’s one piece, machined from billet aluminum, to give the lightest and slimmest gun for concealed carry.

Custom platform work, where they upgrade pistols from other manufacturers such as Glock and SIG. These are interesting guns, but the real stars of the Wilson lineup are the pistols they design and build themselves.

With that in mind, here are the Wilson Combat pistols that stand out today.

The Wilson Combat CQB is the flagship handgun, the company’s signature dish.

I mean there is an Elite version that costs even more and we’ll get to that. But this is the head of the Wilson Combat pistols family.

Even with all the high capacity 9mm handguns, the Close Quarters Combat is the classic 45 ACP 1911 that remains the volume seller and the jewel in the crown.

That carbon steel frame gets a high cut checkered front strap. Of course the dramatic High Ride Beavertail Grip Safety and High Ride Bullet Proof Safety are perfectly engineered and then there are the G10 Starburst grips and front cocking serrations.

It’s a competition grade battle pistol with a match grade barrel and hand fit bushing, low drag rear Battlesight, and a black carbon finish.

This is the traditional 1911 brought right up to date with better materials, tighter engineering tolerances and the very best the modern world can offer at every stage. You can order a Commander version with a 4.25 inch barrel, and there is also a Compact version with a 4 inch barrel that carries much easier.

Meet the Wilson Combat CQB Family

The CQB has evolved into a model line in its own right and target shooters love the CQB Elite. It’s a heavier gun at 2.56lb and comes with a number of different features. They include a tactical Bullet Proof thumb safety and diagonal grips that ditch the legendary starburst pattern.

Now the Wilson Combat CQB Tactical LE is almost the Elite model, but is aimed at tactical teams, SWAT entry teams and the kind of law enforcement units that can afford to place orders for $3,000 handguns.

This CQB Tactical gets a match-grade bull barrel, hand fit of course.

Of course you can go for the CQB Commander carry pistol, which almost got a separate entry here. The CQB Commander isn’t quite as pure as the full size battle pistol though.

Wilson Combat CQB Elite Professional. A full size 1911 grip and a commander barrel. One of the best Wilson Combat pistols for sale in 2025.

Elite Commander Version is Compact

The Wilson Combat CQB Elite Professional comes with a 4 inch barrel mated to a chopped down version of the 45 ACP full size frame. That 4 inch barrel compact pistol ditches the barrel bushing, which could be a point of failure on a seriously abused workhorse of a handgun. That same green or red fiber optic front sight is loud and proud up top.

Now the Wilson Combat CQB Elite Commander offers a 4.25 inch barrel, flush cut and reverse crown, with a bushing and the larger grip from the full size frame. These are small differences in your CQB Compact, but when you’re spending this kind of money then you should get exactly what you want.

There’s a retro special edition 45th anniversary CQB, too, which is a sexy gun.

The EDC X9 was the pistol that proved Wilson Combat could move beyond the traditional 1911 world.

Instead of using the wide frame 2011 design, Wilson built their own double stack platform around a proprietary magazine. The result is a pistol that carries more ammunition than a traditional 1911 but feels noticeably slimmer than most double stack guns.

The standard EDC X9 uses a four inch barrel and typically holds fifteen rounds of 9mm. In the hand it feels smaller than most people expect. The grip tapers toward the base and avoids the blocky shape that some double stack pistols struggle with.

When I first shot one I immediately noticed how controllable the gun felt. The recoil impulse is flatter than most striker fired pistols in the same size category, and the trigger is pure 1911. Short take up, clean break, and a reset that feels almost telepathic.

For many shooters the EDC X9 has become the Wilson Combat pistol that actually gets carried every day.

Originally designed as a concealed carry and a sub-compact 1911 Officer size, these handguns are built on an aluminum frame.

Lightweight, High Capacity

Now the range has evolved and you can get a 2.2lb full size 1911 with 16 rounds in these double stack handguns, and a much longer sight radius. That’s as well as the smaller Commander model.

There is a match-grade bushing style barrel works with an external extractor that is designed to keep going through the worst abuse and lowest grade ammo.

For the checkering, you get the X-Tac and the grip is smaller than an old-school 1911. You can fit an optional aluminum flared magwell, too, and give the EDC X9L a slight race gun look. As does the high ride grip safety and Bullet Proof thumb safety.

The Tritium front sight that borders on night vision helps too. This video shows the EDC X9L, which I also love to shoot.

3. Wilson Combat SFX9 Subcompact

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Barrel length: 3.25 inch
  • Weight: 1.6lb
  • Magazine Capacity: 10+1

Pros

  • Extremely slim double-stack frame that carries comfortably all day
  • Superb single-action trigger uncommon in pistols this size
  • Excellent reliability from Wilson’s proprietary magazine design

Cons

  • Recoil is sharper than larger X-Frame models
  • Proprietary magazines are expensive and less common
  • Premium price for a compact concealed carry pistol

If the EDC X9 was the breakthrough design, the SFX9 is the refined evolution.

At first glance the pistol looks very similar, but the differences start to appear once you handle it. The SFX9 uses a one piece aluminum frame instead of removable grip panels, creating a thinner and more rigid structure. Wilson calls this the Trak frame, and it provides aggressive texture without feeling overly abrasive during long shooting sessions.

The version most people gravitate toward uses a four inch barrel, although longer five inch versions exist for shooters who prefer a duty sized pistol.

What surprised me most about the SFX9 was how slim it felt. On paper it is only slightly thinner than the EDC X9, but inside the waistband that difference becomes noticeable very quickly.

At the range the gun shoots like a bigger pistol than it is. The balance is excellent and follow up shots come naturally.

Quirks and Features

The SF means Solid Frame, as in its machined from aluminum billet for added strength and the lightest possible frame on the Wilson Combat SFX9.

There is no Bullet Proof grip safety here and this is a small, lightweight 1911 for everyday carry with a lightweight solid frame.

Other features including a Concealment Bullet Proof magazine release and slide stop. The frame and stainless steel slide get the X-TAC grip and cocking serrations and there is a green or red fiber optic front sight.

The Solid Frame is one of the finest concealed carry 1911 pistols you’ll find on the market. Technically it’s part of the same X9 line as the EDC X9L, but this is a different vibe. Is it the best concealed carry pistol? It’s one of them.

Wilson Combat SFT9, the solid frame compact machined from a single piece of billet aluminum.

4. Wilson Combat SFT9

  • Caliber: 9mm Luger
  • Barrel: 4 inch
  • Total: 7.5 inches
  • Weight: 1.6lb
  • Capacity: 15+1

Pros

  • Soft shooting for a compact double-stack 9mm
  • Excellent ergonomics with slim X-Frame grip profile
  • Outstanding accuracy and reliability from Wilson fitting

Cons

  • High price compared with most duty-size pistols
  • Proprietary magazines cost more than standard 2011 mags
  • Limited aftermarket compared with Glock or Staccato

The SFT9 is one of the newer additions to Wilson’s lineup and feels like a direct response to the rising popularity of compact 2011 pistols.

Where the SFX9 leans toward a minimalist design, the SFT9 brings back a more traditional slide profile that will look familiar to 1911 shooters. It combines that slide with the modern double stack frame system, creating a pistol that feels both classic and contemporary at the same time.

In practical terms the SFT9 is a very shootable pistol for its size. The balance between weight and recoil is excellent and the gun runs smoothly with standard range ammunition.

After spending time with it I came away thinking this was Wilson’s answer to pistols like the Staccato CS. It carries well, shoots softly, and feels built for serious defensive use.

Wilson Combat Protector -

5. Wilson Combat Protector

  • Caliber: 45 ACP
  • Barrel: 5 inch
  • Total: 8.5 inches
  • Weight: 38oz
  • Capacity: 8+1

Pros

  • Hand-fitted Wilson Combat accuracy at a lower entry price
  • Classic 1911 ergonomics with excellent trigger break
  • Durable Armor-Tuff finish built for hard use

Cons

  • Lower magazine capacity than modern double-stack pistols
  • Still expensive compared with most production 1911s
  • Requires regular maintenance typical of tight 1911 designs

The Protector is often described as Wilson Combat’s entry level pistol. That label can be misleading.

Right now the real world pricing we can find for this gun is $4,498.99, way more expensive than some of the more interesting guns in the line up. Is it overpriced? We’d say yes.

It receives the same core craftsmanship that defines Wilson’s reputation. You still get the hand fitted barrel, the Armor Tuff finish, and the tight slide to frame fit that Wilson pistols are known for.

  • Total: 6 inches
  • Weight: 18.6oz
  • Capacity: 10+1

Pros

  • Significantly improved grip ergonomics over the stock P365
  • Excellent concealed carry size with strong capacity
  • Wilson grip module improves control and recoil management

  • Still a striker-fired trigger compared with Wilson 1911 pistols
  • Not a full Wilson Combat build, mainly a grip upgrade

For slightly less than 3x the price of a stock Sig P365, you too can have a WIlson Combat version tuned by the best gunsmiths in the world.

This is one of many collaborations WC has entered into. After a number of Glocks, the company has gone all in on Sig Sauer thanks to the Fire Control Unit that pops out of the grip module and slots into another one. That means Wilson Combat can do a roaring trade in $80 grip modules for the P365 and P320.

The WCP365 2.0 is the ultimate Sig P365, and you can get it cut for an optic, with a compensator, whatever you like really. The only limit is your imagination, and your budget.

The eXperior is one of the new arrivals and features pretty much every cosmetic and performance mod that the company offers.

You get the flatter TRAC grip texture, a new asymmetrical grip that reduces snagging on clothing while retaining a secure grip. A smooth button style magazine release fits the profile perfectly.

We like to think we’ll treat our $3000+ pistol better than that, too, but it does come with WAVE frame rail clearance cuts. So with minimal lubrication and a slide full of mud and sand, it should still fire. A new barrel locking lug design also helps improve cycling reliability when using garbage ammunition in a gritty gun.

Never Fail Mentality Leads to Engineering Perfection

The same qualities that make it function when others have long since died is why the eXperior is butter smooth in every day life. It is also why it has match grade everything even though its designed as a defensive pistol.

Overkill at every stage is really the only way to give you the most reliable and accurate pistol when you need it. Every time you need it.

You can opt for a double stack eXperior Commander with a 4.25 inch barrel, this 4 inch Compact, a full size 5 inch and you can go single stack too. It’s another full model line of traditional 1911 infused with modern technology, and you can choose from old school 230 grain 45 ACP or new school 9mm Luger..

It uses the same core platform as the EDC X9 but adds additional performance oriented features and cosmetic touches. The most obvious change is the distinctive wave pattern texturing on the slide and frame.

At first I assumed this was purely aesthetic. After shooting the pistol I realized the texture actually provides a very secure grip without feeling abrasive.

The Experior feels like a polished version of the X9 concept. Everything about the pistol seems just a little more refined.

The ACP series was designed to offer a more affordable path into the Wilson Combat ecosystem. Now that’s a relative term, because this is still a $3000 pistol, but it is cheaper than some of the others. Is it budget friendly? Rock Island Armory would say not.

The Commander version uses a 4.25 inch barrel and keeps the classic 1911 proportions intact. The main difference is the barrel fitting process. Instead of the full custom hand fit barrel used in higher end models, the ACP series uses a press fit barrel that reduces production time and cost.

In practice the difference is surprisingly small. Out to typical defensive distances the accuracy remains excellent.

For shooters who want a Wilson Combat pistol chambered in .45 ACP without paying premium prices, the ACP Commander is one of the most approachable options.

  • Wilson Combat tuning dramatically improves the Beretta 92 platform
  • Brigadier slide and upgraded internals enhance durability and accuracy
  • Excellent trigger and reliability for duty or defensive use

Wilson Combat is no longer taking orders for this match grade and massively tuned Beretta 92. But you can still find them for sale.

Sometimes the 92G Brigadier Tactical crops up on Guns.com, though, and we found one. If it’s still there, buy it. This is an instant collector’s item with serious custom work.

Performance features include a new steel guide rod, a dehorned Brigadier steel slide that is then rematched to the frame by one gunsmith. A stainless steel barrel, 4.7 inches with a recessed crown, is then mated to the frame with its double stack magwell and add-ons like a luxury magazine release come last.

New checkering, G10 Dirty Olive Grips and a Battlesight rear and Trijicon Tritium front sight and adjustable rear sight will make your Beretta better. Also look out for the 92G Vertec/Brigadier Tactical with a 1911 style grip angle and shorter frame.

Bill Wilson’s outfit may have pulled back because of a mass of performance Berettas of late, as well as massive demand for the 1911s and long guns. The Double Action/Single Action market has some great competition, too, including the CZ 75 based target shooting specialists like the CZ Czechmate Parrot.

If you want a factory custom Beretta 92x Performance with high capacity magazines, then they are much less money. Wilson Combat handguns, inevitably, cost more.

Parts & Accessories

Of course you don’t need a WC frame to buy custom parts for your 1911, Glock or Sig Sauer. You can buy performance parts, a high capacity magazine, Bullet Proof parts, an external extractor or other parts for your firearms. A skeletonized hammer, spring and other things can really help more than you think.

A match grade barrel, crisp trigger pull, high capacity mag and other custom gun parts can transform an average pistol into a world beater.

So get WC 1911 parts, Glock parts and more and organise the price low to high to spot a surprise bargain. Our favorites WIlson Combat handguns parts suppliers are:

WIlson Combat vs Staccato: What is the best high end pistol

Wilson Combat vs Staccato: Which High-End Pistol Is Better?

If you spend any time around serious handgun shooters, this debate shows up quickly. Wilson Combat and Staccato dominate the high-end defensive pistol market, but they come from very different philosophies.

Staccato builds what are essentially modernized 2011 pistols. These are double-stack evolutions of the classic 1911 design, built for capacity, speed, and duty use. Law enforcement adoption has helped push Staccato into the spotlight over the last few years.

Wilson Combat took a different path. Instead of adopting the 2011 format, they built their own X-Frame platform with pistols like the EDC X9, SFX9, and SFT9. These guns maintain the straight-back 1911 trigger but use proprietary magazines and a slimmer grip design.

In practical terms, Staccato pistols tend to hold more ammunition. A Staccato P can carry seventeen rounds of 9mm and the larger models go even higher. Wilson pistols usually hold fifteen rounds in their double-stack configuration.

Where Wilson often pulls ahead is in fit and finish. Staccato guns are excellent, but they are built on a semi-production line. Wilson pistols are still hand fitted. You can feel it in the slide movement, the thumb safety, and the way the trigger breaks.

At the range the differences are subtle but noticeable. Staccato pistols feel slightly heavier and softer shooting, especially the steel framed models. Wilson pistols tend to feel slimmer and more refined in the hand.

Price is another factor. A typical Staccato pistol runs between $2,300 and $2,800, while most Wilson Combat double-stack pistols land somewhere between $3,000 and $3,500. It is possible to find them cheaper with our live pricing cards and our price comparison tool, but they’re exceptions to the rule.

If you want the best value duty pistol with high capacity, Staccato is very hard to beat. If you want a pistol that feels like it was individually crafted rather than assembled, Wilson Combat still holds the edge.

Wilson Combat ve Nighthawk Custom. What's the best high end handgun in the world?

Wilson Combat vs Nighthawk Custom

If Staccato is Wilson Combat’s competitor in the modern duty pistol market, Nighthawk Custom is its closest rival in the traditional custom 1911 world.

The two companies share some history. Nighthawk Custom was founded in the early 2000s by several gunsmiths who had previously worked at Wilson Combat. That background means both brands approach handgun building with a similar philosophy.

Both companies build pistols using traditional 1911 methods. Frames and slides are hand fitted. Barrels are individually tuned. The guns are test fired and inspected before leaving the shop.

Where things start to differ is in production philosophy.

Wilson Combat builds pistols using a team gunsmithing approach. Different specialists handle different parts of the build process. This allows Wilson to produce a larger number of pistols each year while maintaining very high quality control.

Nighthawk Custom follows a different approach known as one gun, one gunsmith. A single craftsman builds the entire pistol from start to finish. For collectors and enthusiasts, that process carries a certain romantic appeal.

In practical shooting terms the differences are small. Both brands produce exceptionally accurate pistols with outstanding triggers and excellent reliability.

Pricing is also very similar. Most Wilson Combat and Nighthawk pistols start around $3,000 and can climb past $5,000 depending on options and finishes.

Choosing between the two often comes down to personality. Wilson Combat pistols tend to feel slightly more refined and modern. Nighthawk pistols often lean toward classic craftsmanship and traditional aesthetics.

Either way, you are buying one of the finest production 1911 pistols available anywhere in the world.

Why Are Wilson Combat Pistols So Expensive?

The first time someone sees the price of a Wilson Combat pistol, the reaction is usually the same. Three thousand dollars for a handgun sounds absurd if you are used to buying Glocks or standard production pistols.

But Wilson Combat guns are built very differently from mass-produced handguns.

Most modern pistols are manufactured on highly automated production lines. Frames and slides are machined by the thousands and assembled with minimal hand fitting. The tolerances are intentionally loose enough that parts from one gun can easily be swapped into another.

Wilson Combat pistols follow a completely different philosophy.

Every pistol starts with oversized parts that are gradually hand fitted together. The slide is mated to the frame until the movement feels smooth but precise. The barrel lockup is tuned so the gun returns to the same position shot after shot. Even the thumb safety and trigger components are individually adjusted.

This level of fitting takes time, and time is expensive.

There are also the materials. Wilson uses premium match barrels, tool steel internal components, and their proprietary Armor-Tuff finish, which is far more durable than the standard coatings found on most factory pistols.

Then there is the testing. Every Wilson Combat pistol is test fired before it leaves the factory to confirm reliability and accuracy.

When you combine hand fitting, premium materials, and extensive testing, the cost starts to make more sense.

Are Wilson Combat pistols necessary for most shooters? Probably not. A $500 striker-fired pistol will defend your home just as effectively.

But once you spend time with a truly well built 1911, the difference becomes obvious. The trigger is cleaner. The slide movement feels smoother. The accuracy is exceptional.

That is what people are paying for. Not just a gun that works, but a gun that feels like it was built by someone who genuinely cares about how it performs.

Final Thoughts

Wilson Combat pistols occupy a strange but fascinating corner of the handgun world. They are not mass produced duty pistols and they are not purely collector pieces either.

They are tools that have been elevated through craftsmanship.

The CQB remains the classic fighting 1911. The EDC X9 and SFX9 show how the 1911 trigger can evolve into modern double stack designs. And the Supergrade pistols remind everyone what happens when a gunsmith is allowed to chase perfection without worrying about cost.

If you are serious about handguns, owning at least one Wilson Combat pistol is something worth experiencing.

Even if it spoils every other trigger you pull afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Wilson Combat pistol?

The best Wilson Combat pistol depends on what you want from the gun. The CQB remains the classic choice for shooters who want a traditional fighting 1911, while the EDC X9 and SFX9 are better for those who prefer a modern high-capacity carry pistol with a 1911-style trigger.

Are Wilson Combat pistols worth the money?

Wilson Combat pistols are expensive, but they are widely considered worth the cost for serious shooters. Every pistol is hand-fitted, tuned, and test-fired, delivering exceptional accuracy, reliability, and trigger quality. Many owners report thousands of rounds without issues, which is why they remain one of the top custom handgun brands.

What is the difference between Wilson Combat EDC X9 and SFX9?

The EDC X9 and SFX9 are both double-stack Wilson Combat pistols, but the SFX9 is a newer evolution of the platform. It typically has a lighter frame, improved ergonomics, and updated magazine design, making it a slightly more refined option for concealed carry and defensive use.

Are Wilson Combat pistols good for concealed carry?

Yes, several Wilson Combat pistols are excellent for concealed carry. Compact models like the EDC X9S, SFX9 3.25”, and ACP Commander offer high reliability and a superb trigger while remaining compact enough for everyday carry. Many experienced shooters consider them among the best premium carry pistols available.

Why are Wilson Combat pistols so expensive?

Wilson Combat pistols cost more than most production handguns because they are custom-built firearms. Each gun involves extensive hand fitting, match-grade barrels, premium components, and detailed finishing like the Armor-Tuff coating. This process results in exceptional accuracy and durability but also significantly increases production cost.

Where are Wilson Combat pistols made?

Wilson Combat pistols are manufactured in Berryville, Arkansas, USA. The company was founded by legendary gunsmith Bill Wilson and remains one of the most respected American custom firearm manufacturers, producing hand-fitted 1911 pistols, double-stack defensive pistols, rifles, and premium firearm accessories.

What is the most accurate Wilson Combat pistol?

Many shooters consider the Wilson Combat Supergrade and CQB Elite among the most accurate pistols in the lineup. These guns use match-grade barrels, precision-fit slides, and tight tolerances. In ideal conditions, they are capable of sub-2-inch groups at 25 yards, which is exceptional for a defensive handgun.

What caliber are Wilson Combat pistols available in?

Wilson Combat pistols are available in several calibers depending on the model. The most common are 9mm and .45 ACP, but some models are also offered in .38 Super, 10mm Auto, and .40 S&W. Modern double-stack pistols like the EDC X9 series are primarily chambered in 9mm.
