This is it, the battle of the best compact 9mm handguns for sale in 2023. We’re not focused on tiny micro-compact handguns here, although you can stow them. These are slightly bigger and comfier.
9mm handguns are the volume sellers. They’re the big business for the likes of Glock, Sig, HK, Walther and more. It’s a battleground for a reason and it just got more intense.
Glock rested on its laurels, but those times are over. The new entry is sharper and slicker than ever, but this is a cut-throat market and the opposition has some seriously innovative alternatives.
So what are the leading lights?
The Best Compact 9mm Pistols For Sale in 2023
1. Glock 19
- Price: $539.99
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 17+1
- Overall: 7.28
- Barrel Length: 4.02
- Width: 1.34
- Weight: 1.8lb
We used to pride ourselves on basically having no Glock as outright winners. The Gen 4 wasn’t good enough, but the Gen 5 Glock 19 really is a near perfect pistol.
Some might argue for the Glock 19x or G45 service pistols, and we’ll get to those. But as an all-round carry, this is the one.
The trigger is light years better on the Glock 19 Gen 5, the stippling works well and yet the G19 still conceals as well as it ever did. The ability to slip unnoticed into a waistband was always strength, as was the zero maintenance and insane reliability.
But now it’s so much better when it’s in your hand. Actual enthusiasts like them right now, and they were just the Toyota Camry of the firearms industry right up to and including the Gen 4.
The Hills Are Alive With Gen 5
Suddenly, it has woken up and gone to work. The new Glock 19 follows in the footsteps of the brilliant 9mm Glock 43x in that it does everything right, rather than nothing really wrong. This might be the best carry gun...
The longer barrel G19 is accurate, with a crisp trigger and excellent internal safety mechanisms that the firm has doggedly refined over decades. It is famously reliable. Operation is instinctive, the trigger reset feels right and the Gen 5 just sits better in the hand.
This is the new benchmark for the United States handgun industry. You know it, Law Enforcement knows it and so do we. Other can claim the odd vicctory, It is just too hard to beat this gun as a package.
Brand New Glock Gen 5 is Better, Much Better
Glock has worked on the details. The trigger is better, the beavertail is more pronounced, the slide comes with proper serrations up front. Even the grip texture feels a touch stronger and the grip angle feels just different. You don’t need to modify it. Like at all.
All the small issues have been dealt with and this is a super sharp, super reliable and super accurate 9mm. It’s also comes loaded with 17 rounds.
The Glock MOS (Modular Optic System) is more expensive and that is ready for a number of different optics, too. So you can run a Trijicon up top. If you miss with that, it’s on you.
The Best Glock Ever?
This and the brand new Glock 43x might just be faultless. Even the legendary Glock grip angle feels better. It’s easy to make State compliant, thanks to blocked off mags and other simple touches. And it’s just a low maintenance handgun in every respect.
The Gen 5 Glock 19 is basically perfect. It’s the best Glock. So even though we like to be edgy, we have to name this our compact champion and the best-selling handgun in the world.
You can opt for the Coyote Tan Glock 19x, which gives you the longer full size grip module and the compact barrel. As a combat pistol that’s hard to beat, but it does lose out in terms of concealment.
2. Sig Sauer P365 XL
- Price: $599.99
- Overall Length: 7.2
- Barrel: 3.7
- Weight: 1.3lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 12+1
The new battle really is coming down to Sig vs Glock, but the simple Sig Sauer P320 Compact was looking a little long in the tooth. No problem, the Sig Sauer P365XL and X Macros are here to fight for honors and this is an awesome gun.
The grown up version of the groundbreaking Sig Sauer P365 Nitron micro-compact 9mm fits bigger hands. It is less snappy and is generally a more complete pistol. It’s still easy to conceal as well.
The longer Sig P365 XL is a real viable alternative to the modern 9mm Glock 19 as the best CCW and a lot of people swear by theirs. Read the pistol review sections online….
Sig X-Macro is the Competition Spec Badass
If you want to level up, look at the Sig XMacro that could be a game changer.
This semi-auto might be juuuust right for carry and home defense, but it is almost $800.
The optics ready slide is compatible with Sig’s Romeo Zero reflex sight and the Shield RMSc micro red dot sights. That’s a big deal as more shooters are going with the John Wick tactical add ons with small guns these days.
We still love the Sig Sauer P320 by the way, especially in full-sized Sig Sauer P320 XFIVE form. But the time has come to hand over the baton to the Sig P365 Macro and XL.
3. Taurus G3
- Price: $299.99
- Barrel Length: 4″
- Total: 7.28 inch
- Weight: 1.55lb
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 15+1
If you want a 9mm handgun for $300 or less, well the new Taurus G3 is the standout winner of that particular competition.
This is the big brother of the smash hit G2C sub-compact pistols that still star on almost every CCW, EDC and budget firearms list we have. That became one of the best guns in the world a
This is everything you want, including a proper safety, and nothing you don’t. Get used to the slightly quirky trigger and you’ll find the Taurus can hold its own with almost anything here.
And you can have two G3s for the price of a HK and possibly have enough to buy ammo as well. Food for thought…
The Taurus G3 is basically the grown up version of the G2C with a double stack mag. It’s more money, but it’s also arguably the better option. You can get some pretty sexy versions, too, including Desert Tan and Olive Green.
See the full Taurus pistols line here.
Cheap Looks, Great Results
Get over the inevitable cheap sheen on the matte black polymer and you’ll find superb engineering that has swiftly attained a reputation as a reliable, accurate performer.
That’s a massive relief for Brazilian cops that have some of the world’s most violent criminals to deal with. Before now, the traditional Taurus 1911 was all they could ask for.
It isn’t just the price that attracts people to these firearms. Taurus has produced a real winner and this is so cheap it’s worth trying one just to see what you’re missing out on.
Affordable firearms like this can change the way you think about home security. With a few hidden gun safes in your home, you can have one in every room.
4. Colt Combat Commander
- Price: $1,823.99
- Barrel: 4.25
- Total Length: 7.75
- Weight: 2.06lb
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 9+1
The single action 1911 is an institution, and some people simply won’t carry anything else.
And while purists might opt for the 45 ACP classic, the relatively new Colt 9mm line of pistols do pack in more ammo. It’s a tentative step towards the future, if nothing else.
It’s not much, but this 9+1 is a more than respectable magazine capacity and it’s close to the legal limit in some states. So suddenly the Colt 1911 looks a solid option, even in this sea of quality modern opposition.
Colt 1911 is a Purist’s Choice
Now the modern alternatives are lighter and do offer serious tactical advantages over this simple, SAO handgun design. But Colt offers rock-solid reliability and peace of mind if you’re the kind of person that just doesn’t gel with these modern plastic pistols.
You’re out there, and it’s your life on the line. So no judgement here. A well engineered and maintained 1911 is a battle proven pistol with World Wars behind it. That matters.
At more than 2lb, there is a weight penalty with the Colt Combat Commander and all that stainless steel. Is it worth paying? Lots of people think so.
Many of them prefer the more famous Colt Rail Gun with an accessory rail, but it’s an unnecessary distraction when it comes to concealment.
For more Colt pistols, check out this post.
Spend More on a Custom Colt 1911
There are plenty of ways to spend much more on a handgun, especially a Colt 1911 Commander, through the Colt custom shop.
You can opt for the Colt Wiley Clapp LW Commander, which is an elegant semi-auto 9mm pistol.
Also, the Colt Combat Elite line of pistols is there if you want a more aggressive design for your home firearms.
Check out more Colt 1911s in this post.
5. Smith & Wesson M&P9
- Price: $479.99
- Overall Length: 7.4
- Barrel Length: 4.25
- Weight: 1.48lb
- Rounds: 15+1 Rounds
The second generation Smith & Wesson M&P is easily a match for more celebrated guns on this list.
Now the Smith and Wesson M&P9 is one of the lighter semi-automatic pistols here.
The grip module is just stippled enough, without going for the blocks that can and will print. Basically, we like the Smith & Wesson M&P Series in general and the S&W Shield Plus, in particular.
The Smith & Wesson Shield was designed not to stand out. Of course that can actually cost it in terms of PR value and visual impact in the photos, even though the S&W M&P Shield works for a carry gun.
Accurate and Reliable, Important Features Right?
The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield already had the stainless steel slide work at the front that took a certain rival five generations to accomplish. The S&W Shield is no newcomer and the longer barrel versions are accomplished veterans.
The Smith & Wesson 2.0 also gets a better finish. There’s an upgraded steel-chassis supporting the polymer frame, a better trigger and a brilliant grip that is set at 18 degrees for a natural shooting position on the S&W M&P series.
Chances are if you don’t quite vibe with these other big names, that you and the Smith & Wesson Shield are a perfect match. Your new pocket carry chambered in 9mm ammo just hasn’t met you yet.

6. Springfield Armory XD-M Elite
- Price: $478.99
- Overall Length: 7.3 inch
- Barrel: 3.8 inch
- Weight: 1.72lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 16+1 Rounds
This is the match-grade version of the XD Mod 2, and it might just be the perfect carry pistol.
You can also find the XD-S and Springfield Defender with a 4″ barrel and you will find more similarities than differences between them.
The Springfield XD-S is a cheaper single stack with a state compliant 9 rounds in the mag and a flat faced trigger. You can save even more money with the Springfield Defender. That’s a basic pistol, but all the important stuff is there.
Check here for some side by side comparisons and pricing options.
Two Safeties Better Than One
The grip and trigger safety combination mean it would take the mother of all slip-ups for an accidental discharge.
Spend some time with the Springfield XD-M Elite, the safeties become second nature and encourages a positive grip. That does cut down on limpwristing and resulting stovepiping.
Ergonomic Improvements
The slimline Springfield is a real winner when it comes to concealment, and it comes with just enough detail so you can grip the slide from any angle. It’s a full-length, heavy duty guide road and just about every other premium touch you can think of.
A fiber optic night sight up top and a tack driver of a barrel are all good things.
Accessory Rails and Optics Ready
There’s a Picatinny rail for lasers, lights and other accessories if you want to go tacti-cool too. And there’s even a loaded chamber indicator. Then there’s the RMR plate up top for a red dot.
With a 16-round mag, this pocket pistol packs a lot of punches, too. It’s a cut above a CCW, but it will slip away invisibly.
This is one of the great semi auto pistols. It could even be better than the company’s much more vaunted 9mm caliber 1911s.
Smaller Hellcat Finding Favor
Now the 9mm micro compact size Springfield Hellcat is starting to get some seriously good press too.
You can order one of the Springfield Hellcats with a reflex ready plate, which was a USP until the others caught up. Read more down below at the foot of this post…
7. Heckler & Koch HK VP9
- Price: $749.99
- Barrel: 4.09 inch
- Total Length: 7.34 inch
- Weight: 1.6lb
The HK VP9 doesn’t get much love on these pages and it’s down the list here once again. And yet it’s a fantastic semi-automatic pistol. So what gives?
It’s purely a pricing issue. I think the HK VP9 is every bit as good as anything here. Better than most even. But it isn’t that much better, and it is normally significantly more cash.
The Heckler and Koch VP9 really is one of the big names here. But is it worth this much? S
HK Handguns Are Expensive, But You Knew That…
Some people won’t carry anything else, but you need to find a discount HK. We sometimes do that here, which makes this pricing rant sound a bit nonsensical. But often we can’t and it’s plain right.
These are nice striker fired pistols though. There are even metal parts inside where you’ll find plastic in others. This is high-quality engineering. But the HK is heading toward custom gun pricing and other firearms manufacturers offer just as much bang for much less bucks.
Personal Preference Plays a Part
It is still a plastic pistol at the end of the day, and the HK vs Sig vs Glock best CCW debate comes down to personal
Heckler & Koch is one of the great firearms manufacturers and its other firearms are still some of our favorites. The new HK SP5K is awesome and that’s 9mm and a bit compact.
While we love the HK VP9, though, and the full size HK VP9L, we don’t think we would purchase one at the RRP. This is undoubtedly one of the top handguns, but you need a discount.
8. Arex Zero 1CP
- Price: $489.99
- Overall: 7.1
- Barrel: 3.85
- Height: 5.1
- Width: 1.1
- Weight: 1.56lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 15+1 Rounds
This is the next generation CZ 75 with a designer look. That’s not a backhanded compliment by the way. We think that’s awesome and this might be the secret inside tip gun on this list. Or not, if you’ve seen all the other positive reviews.
It’s high-tech, Swiss watch style firearms engineering from a small firm in Slovenia. As well as the ReX Zero 1CP, 1s look out for the outrageous ReX Alpha that you can find on our list of full-size 9mm pistols.
Browning Hi-Power, Refined
You can run the ReX Zero 1CP like a SAO, cocked and locked, or you can go DA/SA pistol, much like the CZ 75 Compact. Using that long double action as its own safety is a great option with a suitable Kydex holster and the trigger pull is almost sensual.
If you’re a touch paranoid about safety, this should help. You get a separate frame-mounted thumb safety that is fully ambidextrous, along with the mag release. The slide stop doubles as a decocker too.
Machined Billet Frame Semi Auto, For This Money?
The frame is machined from aircraft-grade billet 7075 T6 aluminum. The carbon steel slide is produced to the same exacting standard and is then Nitrocarburized to protect the hard work that went into this semi automatic handgun.
The business end is cold hammer forged from solid barstock. This compact handgun gets full-length slide rails and a steel locking block insert to keep things tight and vibration free. It’s another double stack magazine, too.
Simple Sights, Ready to Upgrade
The 3-dot sights are an easy upgrade. In fact there is a decent selection of grips and other Rex Zero parts and accessories out there. So if you don’t like the grips, and I could see that, there’s an easy fix here.
The whole line are over-engineered 9mm pistols from Arex in Slovenia. They have been a military supplier for long enough. They know the score, and the ReX brand in the USA is one we’re going to watch with interest.
This is an excellent shooting metal handgun with a hammer. It’s as light as plastic, it shoots tighter and it should be much more durable. All this matters with your everyday carry.
Over-Engineered at Discount Prices
The engineering is way beyond this price range.
The closest comparison I can offer is a cut down Colt 1911 Defender Lightweight. Compare and contrast for yourself, but technically this is more for less.
Chunky Metal Frame Feels Solid
The chunky metal frame feels solid and the Picatinny rail gives you options when it comes to tactical gear. The magazine release and safety could be more elegant, as could those screw on grips, but they could also be a lot worse.
9. RIA MAPP Series
- Price: $419.99
- Barrel: 3.6
- Total: 7.3
- Weight: 1.75lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 12+1
This used to be the Tanfoglio Witness, but it looks like Rock Island Armory/Armscor has snapped up the rights. Italian design and proven mass manufacturing you say? Go on…
Rock Island Armory has badged as an RIA MAPP Series. Now it is cheaper, and might even be better.
Made For Concealment
You can literally see how it was sculpted for concealment. That stubby front is designed for a clean, snag-free draw. The tapered slide, low profile front sight and that chunky grip holds a lot of 9mm ammunition. That makes it a solid choice for nightstand pistol duties too.
Tanfoglio has built its reputation on accuracy, so you can expect it to deliver at anything like defensive distances. A dot sight up front and adjustable rear sights sit up top. But the most important part are the ergonomics.
Function Over Form Creates Stunner
The slide is sculpted for easy manipulation, the grip forces your hand into the right place and there is a chunky safety. Yet that square cut front end on the 3.6″ barrel, skeletonized hammer and chunky accessory rail just don’t get in the way during every day use.
We like this hammer fired 9mm a lot. It’s thoughtful, easy to carry and even easier to shoot. There are design cues we love and functional tricks that give it a competitive edge over some very serious opposition.
Try the RIA MAPP Series. And like us, prepare to be amazed by this Glock killer.
10. Sig P229 Legion
- Price: $1,312.99
- Length: 7.4 inch
- Barrel: 3.9 inch
- Weight: 2.1lb
- Caliber: 9mm
- Capacity: 15+1 Rounds
If money is no object and you just don’t want a plastic pistol, these could be the best 9mm pistols on the list.
Check out Lucky Gunner’s review of the Sig P229 Legion here. It is pretty, we do have to say…
Custom Gun at a Discount Price
This grey and black finish is damned elegant. You can see the craftsmanship you just might think is missing from the modern crop of polymer handguns. You would have a point.
But nothing in life comes for free. There is always a bill….
Here there are two. The Sig P229 is a significantly heavier semi-automatic pistol than the others here and that does matter if it lives on your hip. It also comes with a hefty sticker price, but this could easily be a gun for life if you take care of it.
The Conservative Modern Choice
If you just can’t get along with a plastic handgun, but you know the compact 1911 has had its day and you’re not quite ready for a
The Sig P226 is the full-size pistol, and you can find the Sig P226 TACOPS in our large 9mm pistol collection. There isn’t much doubt that the Sig P226 is one of the finest guns on the market today, and the Sig P229 is every bit as good.
11. CZ 75 Compact
- Price: $799.99
- Total: 7.3
- Barrel: 3.9
- Weight: 2.05lb
- Rounds: 10+1/14+1
It says a lot that an Eastern European service pistol designed in 1976, in its basic form, has appeared on pretty much every one of our leading 9mm handgun lists.
The CZ 75 P-01 Compact is clearly an evolution of the much-loved CZ 75. The rounded heel and deep extended beavertail work together with a better slide.
The CZ 75 B is an icon and has given birth to the CZ 2075 Rami concealed carry pistol and the CZ Shadow that is our favorite full-size 9mm handgun. The CZ 75 Compact has left the traditional 1911 long behind and the gun reviews love this compact Wonder 9.
Browning Hi-Power Action
The highest capacity has become commonplace now, but it’s the action and the flexibility that really marks it apart. That’s because the CZ 75 in all its forms molds to your shooting technique.
If you want cocked and locked condition 1 then that’s no problem. If you want the safety off and a long double action trigger as your protection against an accidental discharge then you can go with the DA/SA pistol approach. And if you want a proper safety as well, it’s there.
We love that and we think it’s an under-rated system. The ReX basically builds on this system and we think that’s going to be a smash hit because of it. But the CZ 75 Compact is the safe bet when it comes to reliability and parts supply.
Night sights, an extended mag and more or less anything else you want are available on the market.
A Handgun Legend
The CZ 75 Compact loses out these days in terms of weight and the number of hollow points to other 9mm handguns, but the weight helps with felt recoil and the age can count in its favor.
This has collectively survived thousands of Siberian winters, desert storms and moldy swamps, as well as law enforcement careers. It has traveled the world and come back firing and that kind of torture test means it has evolved.
It’s up the likes of the ReX Zero 1CP to carry the torch, but if you want the old guard then you’ll find this is still capable. It’s one of the great semi-automatic pistols for a reason and if you don’t own one, in some form, then fix that now.
Check the top CZ pistols here.
12. Palmetto State Armory Dagger
- Price: $299.99
- Barrel: 3.9
- Total: 7.15
- Weight: 1.4lb
Palmetto State Armory has made its name with budget rifles and AR pistols. Now, with the Palmetto State Armory Dagger, the company has gone after the polymer framed pistol market. And with pricing this aggressive, it’s almost certain to be a smash hit.
The PSA Dagger does look like a budget DIY Glock to be honest, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of people build their own Glocks to a price point. Here, Palmetto State Armory has just done the work for you and produced the complete compact 9mm handgun.
Huge Spec For The Money
As with the rifles, the spec sheet sounds seriously impressive, including a DLC coated barrel, an undercut trigger guard and front and rear steel slide serrations. The grip texture lis awesome too.
On the spec sheet, most Palmetto State Armory products punch massively above their weight, and they kind of do in the real world too. It won’t be a match for the ZEV at long range, but then it costs a fraction of the amount. So there’s that…
This gun really goes to war with the Taurus G3, even the G2C and SCCY alternatives. And in that space, it looks epic value. Palmetto State Armory often do gun deals, too, with packs of mags, night sights, cases and even ammo.
13. Ruger American
- Price: $499.99
- Barrel: 4.2 inch
- Total: 7.4 inch
- Weight: 1.9lb
- Rounds: 15+1
The Ruger American is a serious contender in its basic form, thanks to the relatively cheap entry point.
This is a clear Glock 19 rival and a high quality firearm with much more adjustability, with palmswells and backstraps etc.
That’s the Ruger American way. This is a dependable, solid striker-fired pistol with some nice features that include that pinky extension on the extended mag for a longer grip length.
It isn’t going to win outright here, but the Ruger American will carve its own value for money based niche in the concealed carry sector.
14. ZEV Technologies OZ9 Compact
- Price: $1,727.99
- Length: 7.32 inch
- Barrel: 4.48 inch
- Weight: 1.75lb
- Capacity: 17+1
Technically, this should be perfect for conceal carry.
ZEV Technologies has carved out an exceptional reputation in the custom Glock world. The likes of the G34 Dragonfly are the stuff of legend, but ZEV has its eyes on a greater prize.
Recently it unveiled its own AR-15 line and this. In essence, it’s a refined and tuned G19 built around a metal frame. The ZEV OZ9 is a masterpiece.
The Metal Framed G19. Finally…
A metal frame allowed ZEV to build a more solid foundation that simply wouldn’t flex when fired. They could then go to work on integrating the locking block. The full-length slide slide is another part of the design and the single piece channel is self-cleaning and lubricating.
It’s a slight surprise to see the magwell wasn’t integrated and still looks afterrmarket. In fact it looks like a tuner firearm and that is probably so it can sell slides and parts & accessories with this halo gun.
Or you know, you could just buy this one.

15. Beretta 92x RDO Compact
- Price: $756.99
- Barrel: 4.25″
- Total: 7.75″
- Weight: 1.7lb
- Capacity: 10+1
The Beretta 92 FS is a military legend for good reason, and the new Beretta 92x RDO compact version gets just as much love from gun owners round the country. Is it one of the best guns? Weight apart, it has to be really doesn’t it?
It’s an all-metal handgun with the SA/DA approach to life. It works. The cut down version of a gun that was the US Military’s official sidearm is a popular gun and a direct rival for the CZ 75 B Compact in all its forms. An extended magazine is no problem either.
Accuracy, repeatability and reliability all go hand in hand with the Beretta 92 FS Compact. And if you love big brother, you’ll already know that you have to have one for your EDC. The Beretta APX Centurion might be a better concealed carry CQB though.
Check all the best Beretta pistols in this post.
16. Walther PDP Compact
- Price: $649.99
- Barrel: 3.5
- Total: 7 inch
- Weight: 1.38lb
- Capacity: 15+1
The Walther PDP has put Walther right back in the conversation. It is a competition spec pistol, that sits in an IWB holster.
The Walther OEM trigger set is the stuff of legend and the brand has a hardcore following because of the best triggers. Always remember, though, that is a vocal minority saying the Walther PDP is better than a Glock 19…
Walther’s devotion to match pistols pays off at long range, too. Because underneath the carry handgun exterior is a target shooting pistol just trying to get out.
Don’t Forget Your PPS
The Walther PPS is another perennial favorite. And we have to say we do like it.
That is a basic, slimline sub compact handgun that you should grab if you see it at the right price. It’s real easy to conceal, and could do pocket carry duty.
It doesn’t conceal quite as easily as the top players. But that comfortable grip feels much better in the hand and at the range So far, lots of you are pretty happy with that trade-off.
17. Dan Wesson ECP
- Price: $1,721.99
- Total: 7.25
- Barrel length: 3.5
- Width: 1.45
- Weight: 1.7lb
- Capacity: 7+1
As a piece of firearms sculpture, the Dan Wesson ECP is pretty awesome.
Here, though, we have to accept that a compact 1911 comes with certain limitations. Weight and Capacity, mainly. If you can deal with those, this is a beautiful pistol.
The Dan Wesson Eco fits the same footprint as the others, but it’s got just 7 rounds. That basically is where it loses. Well, that and the price.
Custom Touches, at a Price
The Dan Wesson 1911 is a thing of beauty. It’s beautifully finished, the trigger is a delight and you get a proper thumb safety. It’s also hammer fired. There’s a lot to love in isolation.
But it’s the ideal comparison for the polymer concealed carry handguns and even the Arex.
Aesthetically, the Dan Wesson Eco wins this one at a canter. Dan Wesson understands minimalist pistol designs. So it depends if you’re looking for something to go with your
Like a Swiss Watch? A Bit…
The Dan Wesson ECP probably won’t be your constant EDC. It’s too pretty for that. It does come with Tritium sights up front, the safety is nice and it really is well thought out. But there are more practical options for daily use.
Instead this will be your special occasion piece, like a great watch that you always wear with a certain suit. It’s basically jewelry that also happens to boast some of the finest engineering in the 1911 world.
The mag release, thumb safety and the checkered front and back strap are every bit as good as you would hope.
Technically they might not be the best in the world, and that design really does count against it. But it’s certainly one of the prettiest.
18. Beretta APX A1
- Price: $399.99
- Barrel: 4.25
- Weight: 1.8lb
- Capacity: 17+1 Rounds
The first Beretta APX just sucked. It was an ugly mess, but this A1 is a mid-life refresh that has totally transformed it into a gun you might genuinely consider.
Now the slide is leagues better and the frame is has better grips, an accessory rail, just about everything. The slide is also ready for a red dot.
18. FN 509
- Price: $629.99
- Overall: 7.4 inch
- Barrel: 4 inch
- Weight: 1.68lb
- Capacity: 17+1 Rounds
Fabrique Nationale built the all-new FN 509 to challenge the Sig P320 for the US military service contract.
It lost, the Sig P320 won. So now there is a service pistol without a home.
Of course the FN 509 is getting traction and undergoing testing with military units and Law Enforcement Officers around the globe. It will do well for itself.
That’s because this is an elite handgun. The ergonomics, too, are amazing when you’re shooting. It is designed for the hip, though, and there are a few sharp edges to contend with. So it might not be as easy to carry as the obvious rival.
Is the FN More Accurate?
At the range, this is just epic. In terms of quality, there’s nothing to choose between the Sig P320 vs FN 509 vs Glock 19.
There is cold hammer forged steel, you can field strip it in seconds and it’s easy to clean and maintain. It is also super accurate and the trigger is crisper than the tastiest bacon.
In short, this semi-automatic pistol can easily hang with the rest. And it’s only going to get better as the Tactical option shows. This will evolve, like the FNS did before it. It’s good now, it’s going to be great.
No External Safety on this Handgun
This is a Double Action handgun with no safety beyond a long trigger pull. So it really does go into a Battle Royale with the front two. It’s better in the hand than the Sig, but even worse when it comes to concealment thanks to that rugged patterned grip and heavily serrated slide.
Is that a deal-breaker? That’s really a personal thing. This is never going to be the most popular carry options, but it is a good gun from a great brand. Have a look at the full sized Long Slide Edge version, too. It’s badass.
19. Springfield 1911 Ronin Operator
- Price: $794.99
- Barrel: 4
- Total: 7.5
- Weight: 1.9lb
- Rounds: 9+1
Building on the success of the lightest 1911 in its class, the Springfield EMP, the Springfield Ronin is the latest addition to the company’s ranks.
You get aggressive laser etched stippling, rather than traditional checkering, on the forged steel frame. Also it comes with day/night fiber optics and laminate G10 grips. .
It gives the Springfield Ronin the look and feel of a custom gun that could cost way more money with the right name on the side. This is one of those 1911s you might just open carry to show it off.
Just don’t fit Batman grips. I mean, do it if you want, but don’t ask us to respect it.
Manual Safety and Match Grade Everything
There’s a match grade bull barrel without a bushing and a fully supported feed ramp. Every slide edge has been radiused for a smoother draw and it’s these kind of details that make this just feel different in the hand and holster.
That’s 4″, not the typical Commander 4.25″. In a carry gun, that does make a difference.
These are beautiful handguns with a weight saving aluminum frame, bright night sights and a unique look.
We love Springfield’s compact for concealed carry handguns, and we think you will love this one too.
20. Kimber Pro Carry II
- Price: $919.99
- Total Length: 7.7 inch
- Barrel: 4 inch
- Weight: 1.75lb
- Capacity: 7+1
Kimber has a bigger reputation in the 45 ACP space, but the Yonkers, New York based firm has some badass carry 9mm 1911 pistols as well.
Now you’ normally have to suck up a weight penalty with a 1911 vs a polymer pistol. But seemingly not here. The Kimber weighs in at 1.75lb. It isn’t a flyweight, but it’s not horrendous for a compact handgun. That heft can hold it stable and that makes it easy to shoot too.
The Kimber Pro Carry and Kimber Aegis II gets a decent capacity and this also receives the rounded heel for a snag-free draw. They are slimmer for small hands, too. So if you don’t like a full size 1911, this might be perfect.
Add the grooves on the back-strap, the two-tone finish that includes a contrasting, polished ejector port and the grip safety.
But, well, it costs a lot more than the cheapest 45 ACP pistols for sale. Is it worth it? It’s up to you. It’s your money…
Custom 1911 For the Designer Crowd
If style counts, though… If you believe in functional art and jewelry in firearms form, maybe this is actually worth the premium. Is it the best pistol here? It’s one of them…
It’s an SAO firearm, which means carrying it Condition 1, cocked and locked. But that’s something you get used to. In the end it’s part of the charm of this compact 1911 that will put a smile on your face every time your hand touches proper cold steel.
21. Stoeger STR-9C
- Price: $349.99
- Total Length: 7 inch
- Barrel: 3.8 inch
- Weight: 1.5lb
- Capacity: 10+1
Stoeger has made a name with budget firearms that punch above their weight and we have a soft spot for its 3-Gun shotgun that features in our semi-auto shotguns post.
Now this polymer framed compact pistol is ready to rock your carry guns world, or something. I mean it’s a new gun and the gun deals are sensational…
It’s a familiar pattern with a feature rich handgun for bargain basement money. Front slide serrations aren’t really a big deal in this company, but the reversible magazine release and picatinny rail aren’t bad.
The Stoeger STR-9C is a solid performer and you can get two for the price of one Glock. Size and weight, pretty much everything are Glock esque with a hint of the others.
Is that good? That’s for you to decide.
22. Ed Brown Evo KC9 Kobra Carry
- Price: $2,647.99
- Barrel: 4
- Total Length: 7.5
- Weight: 2.12lb
- Capacity: 9+1
Ed Brown created one of the world’s most famous 1911s of recent times with the Ed Brown Kobra Carry more than 20 years ago.
Now the Ed Brown KC9 continues that legacy.
Bobtail 1911 is a Work of Art
The Bobtail frame has been one of Ed Brown’s signature touches for decades. The snakeskin texture on the grips and custom checkering is something to behold, too. It’s almost sexy enough to make you open carry.
We’re not designers, or even decent gunsmiths, but Ed Brown KC9 is a much more cohesive design than the immediate rivals. It’s prettier and that matters.
The crown cut barrel is match-grade and all the details are peak engineering. For a 1911, the capacity isn’t half bad either. If you want a 1911 and you’re happy with 10 rounds in a single burst, then this could be the one.
23. Arex Delta
- Price: $393.99
- Barrel: 4 inch
- Total: 7 inch
- Weight: 1.2lb
- Rounds: 17+1
On a purely technical level, the Arex Delta might just be our favorite striker fired pistol. Beauty counts in this world, though, and the feature-heavy and shiny metal Arex Zero 1 CP stole the limelight from its more capable and diligent sibling.
Sorry about that…
Tuner Touches on an OEM Pistol
Look at the custom stippling and the advanced slide work on the nitrocarburized stainless steel frame. That makes it super easy to rack. Look at the flat blade trigger and the low drag rear sight too.
This is all good stuff and it comes straight from the factory modded up like a custom gun.
Inside, there’s a triple layer passive safety system that apparently provides additional protection against accidental discharges. The Arex Delta basically fits any holster that will accommodate a G19 too.
Arex Winning Friends And Influencing People
Arex has won us over with engineering excellence and design flair, as well as as great gun deals. We know this little Glock rival is going to make a lot of friends on these shores and you will see lots of these new polymer handguns.
This could be the new CZ P-10. A relative unknown with a massively devoted following. An underdog, that is actually better…
We like those kind of guns, we like the ReX Delta and we think it could be one of the surprise hits. Police forces and soldiers in Eastern Europe already carry this little polymer frame special.
24. EAA Tanfoglio Witness Commander 1911 Polymer Pro
- Price: $555.99 RRP, $700+ Covid pricing…
- Barrel Length: 4.125
- Total Length: 8
- Rounds: 17+1
- Weight: 1.8lb
The EAA Tanfoglio Witness Commander 1911 Polymer could be the plastic 1911 that finally wins over the crowd. If it comes back to the market, it seems to have dropped off the map of late.
We don’t bat an eyelid at polymer frame pistols, but plastic 1911s with a black polymer frame were an entirely different thing. Why though?
There’s no real reason. And while we might give another brand a healthy dose of side eye, we have learned to trust the EAA Tanfoglio combo.
EAA Tanfoglio Making a Name in the United States
European American Armory imports the Italian gunsmith’s finest wares and has watched them sweep the board in target shooting, 3-Gun Competition and more.
This is a single-stack polymer 1911 that weighs more than 0.5lb less than a steel-framed Commander. That is a lot and it turns this plastic 1911 into one of the best here, potentially. It’s also very cheap for all the same reasons.
Now you can get a cheap 45 1911, but the 9mm ammunition is a great option and it fits most Commander-sized 1911 parts & accessories.
Novelty? No, It’s More…
The EAA Tanfoglio Witness Commander Polymer is also a novelty. it’s new, and because it’s a Tanfoglio it’s almost certain to be amazing. Get one, and see just how cool it is to own a plastic 1911 handgun.
Are you looking for inspiration for a new EDC? You’re welcome…
26. Nighthawk Custom Ambassador Series Counselor
- Price: $4,590.
- Barrel Length: 3.5
- Rounds: 8+1
- Weight: 1.8lb
This is a custom Nighthawk Commander Carry 1911 that one of the company’s master craftsmen used as his personal application for the American Pistolsmiths Guild.
It goes without saying he is now a member. It also goes without saying this is batshit insane expensive. We dig Nighthawk Custom, but this is big money.
Bespoke Details Should be Impressive
The slide cuts help save weight and pneumatically achieved stippling is practical, as well as elegant.
The Nighthawk has a match-grade 3.5 inch bull barrel, a Nitride coated steel frame and one-piece magwell with flush mag. The slide is engineered to perfection, the trigger is a flat and a low profile mag release complete the exotic look.

Where to buy Nighthawk Custom Handguns
Nighthawk Custom has taken the firearms industry by storm. Now they have 40 models on sale that range from double-stack 1911s through to competition 44 Magnum revolvers.

27. Beretta PX4 Storm
- Price: $649.99
- Barrel: 2.75
- Total: 5.17″
- Weight: 0.67lb
- Capacity: 6+1
The Beretta PX4 Storm Compact is one of those edgy guns you have to just be different. It also looks good, which does count, and if you jut can’t stand a Glock then this might be for you.
SubCompact 9mm Pistols Taking Over
We basically had to shoo the subcompact handguns and the best micro-compact 9mm offerings to one side, or they would take over everything.
The new breed of subcompact 9mm firearms have turned into gun store favorites and have hit the sales of the traditional Glock 19 hard.
You already know the guns we’re talking about and you can see a much more complete list here in our post on the 15 9mm subcompact handguns on sale.
But if you want a few quick picks?
1. Glock 43x
- Price: $449.99
- Barrel: 3.4
- Total: 6″
- Weight: 0.67lb
- Capacity: 10+1
This one could have sneaked in to the main event, but it would probably have won again. The Glock 43x is that good that we’re holding it back to give the G19 a chance.
With the 3.4″ barrel, the Glock 43x fills a sub-niche and bridges the gap between high capacity micro compact 9mm pistol, sub-compact and the longer barrel G19. It has also proved one of the best guns of 2023 and almost certainly the best Glock for concealed carry.
It’s also basically built to be State Compliant with a flush mag. For the highest capacity 9mm, just go with an extended mag. They can be drums if you really want. Just start with the best subcompact 9mm and that might just be this one.
2. Sig Sauer P365x
- Price: $499.99
- Barrel: 3.1
- Weight: 1.12lb
- Capacity: 10+1
The Sig became the best micro-compact 9mm pistol benchmark and still is one of the top guns on the market to be honest.
Shorter than the Glock, this is about as compact as CCW gets without resorting to gimmicks. The x is an evolution with an extended beavertail to help stop slide bite, an optics ready slide and flat trigger. Optics really do help at long range, by the way, and are great for rapid target acquisition in low light.
There are an awful lot of custom mods you can buy now, including red dots, guide rod and firing pin upgrades. The stock version is State Compliant more or less everywhere, though. It’s also arguably the best 9mm pistol in the sector.
3. Taurus G2C
- Price: $236.99
- Barrel: 3.25
- Weight: 1.38lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 10+1
The Taurus G2C has rewritten the rules when it comes to cheap subcompact handguns with a high capacity. This one is actually good.
It’s reliable, cheap, accurate and kinda fun. That has helped it displace more expensive rivals as the everyday carry for thousands of Americans. It’s a light trigger, and a little grainy, but you’ll get used to it.
There is a proper manual safety and lots of other things to like. But the price tag is obviously the USP. If you’re on a budget, these are the best 9mm pistols here.
So while the Taurus GX4 is a better gun, the bigger price means that it’s less spectacular in our eyes. And that’s why we left out the Taurus GX4 sub compact tactical pistol…
4. Springfield Armory Hellcat
- Price: $529.99
- Barrel: 3 inch
- Weight: 1.15lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 10+1
The Springfield Hellcat has emerged as a true contender in the best micro compact 9mm pistol class. It is optic ready and is high price, high quality all the way. It could well be the best gun in its class and it’s easily one of the best 9mm pistols for concealed carry..
We like the Springfield Armory Hellcat, and we think you will too. Especially when you have to be State Compliant and you’re limited to about 10 rounds.
A micro compact handgun can give you all you are allowed in the most convenient package.
If you want the full 9mm compact tactical pistol, check the Hellcat RDP, too, with a compensator…
See the best Springfield pistols on sale here.
5. Ruger Max 9
- Price: $449.99
- Barrel: 3
- Total: 6″
- Weight: 0.67lb
- Capacity: 6+1
The Ruger Max is the new sub-compact from the best-selling company of value products.
Normally Ruger offers simplified pistols on a budget. But the striker-fired Ruger Max is a serious collection of parts for the micro comapcts sector. The fiber optic sights are top class, the slide comes ready for optics like red dots and this gun really is aimed at the best micro compacts.
The Ruger Max isn’t picking fights with the off-brand stuff. It is set to take on the Sig P365 and Hellcat.
Is the Ruger Max 9 the best concealed handgun in Ruger’s arsenal now? Yes…
We could have included the likes of the Ruger EC9s 9mm handguns. And the LCP Max. But who really wants a Ruger LCP Max 9mm when they can have a Hellcat or a G43x?
So we quietly clipped the LCP Max off the list, and we think you’ll agree we’re right.
6. Kimber Evo SP (CDP)
- Price: $753.99
- Barrel Length: 3.16 inch
- Total Length: 6.1 inch
- Weight: 1.19lb
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 7+1
The Ruger LCP II 380 is the benchmark for this class and there’s a lot to like here. Mainly that the whole gun measures just 5.17 inches long and the cold hammer forged barrel is much less than 3 inches.
That makes the Ruger LCP II the perfect pocket pistol and a real option to the Springfield Hellcat and P365 that have become the default microcompact options. In an IWB holster, it would not print.
So if you’re looking for something really small as a pocket pistol or back-up, don’t forget the diminutive and lightweight Ruger LCP with its budget white dot sight.
2. Glock 42
- Price: $459.99
- Barrel: 3.25″
- Weight: 1.08lb
Glock wins more or less everything and it makes a solid case for the 380 crown with the striker-fired Glock 42. You could easily choose this gun, and you’d be right.
This is easy to shoot, it’s light and it’s a semi-auto Glock. So it just works when you need it and everything can be upgraded. It’s also comfortable to carry as an appendix carry and fits other tight squeezes.
3. Colt Mustang XSP Lite Polymer
- Price: $529.99
- Barrel: 2.75
- Weight: 0.75lb
A lot of concealed carriers want to carry a Colt 1911, but the size and heft are a challenge even on the Colt Defender 9mm version.
So what’s the answer? How’s about a the 0.75lb Colt Mustang? It works for us. That’s a diferent kind of compact tactical pistol that slips into a sock or pocket..
This is clever, as carry options go and it’s pretty. The baby Colt is easier to conceal than a full-size gun, obviously, and still provides a certain level of stopping power.
4. Walther PPK
- Price: $799.99
- Barrel: 3.3
- Total: 6.1″
- Weight: 1.18lb
- Capacity: 7+1
Personally I have strong doubts that the British Secret Service would even let James Bond carry a Walther PPK these days. It could have been the original micro compact handgun, but those days are long gone.
Losing an agent of that caliber because his pea-shooter of a 380 ACP hammer-fired pistol simply couldn’t keep up with modern super villains’ 9mm firearms is frankly stupid. It wouldn’t happen.
So Bond would go armed with a hard to beat Glock 43 or a Sig 365 these days, not a Walther PPK. But if you want a 380, well it’s here, and for some reason it is still the official firearm of the world’s greatest super spy.
It’s comfortable to shoot and accurate too, thanks to a high quality cold hammer forged barrel. as well as easily concealable.
So for a range toy, it’s great if you’re not stressing over stopping power. And for a night out it’s better than nothing if your other guns and carry holsters print through your suit.
What Else Can We Help You With?
Do you need a bolt-action rifle to go with your 9mm pistol? Maybe a 9mm AR pistol might be more logical, but you know, you do you. A bolt action rifle firing rounds of 9mm is even an option, but we would still recommend the modern Pistol Caliber Carbine.
Then get sights, lights, parts & accessories or a Crimson Trace and flat faced trigger with us too. Optics, scopes, iron sights, red dot sigts, we got em all. We even have air rifles and airsoft accessories somewhere, but not too many.

I carry a Staccato C2 Duo is highly recommend. Just such a good gun, it has to be on a list like this.
I’d carry a p239
