The Mossberg 590R takes the 590’s pump action and gives it controls an AR shooter already knows. The tang safety is gone. In its place is an ambidextrous, AR-style rotary safety selector above the pistol grip, which Mossberg says you can reach without breaking your grip. Add a flat trigger, a 5-position adjustable stock, a Picatinny top rail and an integrated heat shield, and you have a pump gun set up like a carbine.
For this Mossberg 590R review, I ran 500 rounds through a standard 590R, model 50762, over three sessions. The gun never failed. The only hiccup was mine: one short-stroke early on, before I got used to the compact forend. The rotary safety took about a box of shells to feel natural, and after that I didn’t want to go back to a tang safety.
The list price has come down. Mossberg’s own pages listed the 590R at $1,085 in 2025 and $980 in 2026, and the magazine-fed 590RM lists at $1,085 for 2026. On our cards, the 590R often sells for well under list.
If you already shoot an AR and want a home defense pump that works the same way, the 590R is the one to buy.

Design Intent: A 590 With Carbine Controls
Mossberg describes the 590R as combining “time-tested pump-action performance with ground-breaking new features like a rotary safety selector, an ergonomically-designed forend, and an integrated barrel/heat shield combination.” The logic is simple. A lot of shooters learned on an AR, and their thumb already knows where a rotary safety lives. The 590R puts it there.
The rest of the gun follows the same idea. The stock adapter gives five positions of length of pull through an integrated lever, works with various stock and grip designs, and carries two QD sling ports, per Mossberg.
The top Picatinny rail is there for an optic. A front M-LOK adapter gives slots on both sides for a light or sling. And a longer, beveled loading gate with an exposed follower makes loading the tube easier.
Why the adjustable stock matters
A fixed shotgun stock fits one body. The 590R’s length of pull runs from 12 to 15.25 inches, so a smaller shooter and a bigger one can both mount it properly, and you can shorten it when you’re wearing a jacket or plate carrier. For a home defense gun that more than one person may need to use, that’s a real advantage.

Mossberg also lists an 11.5 inch 590RM Chisel (50229) marked Class 3, which is an NFA short-barreled shotgun and not a normal over-the-counter purchase. The Cerakote models cost $56 more than the parkerized guns at list.

590R, Stand-Off or 590RM?
The standard 590R (50762) is the one I’d buy for home defense. It has Mossberg’s Accu-Choke threads with a Cylinder Bore tube installed, so you can fit a tighter choke later if your buckshot patterns too wide. It also comes with Magpul MBUS 3 flip-up sights.
The Stand-Off (50761) swaps the muzzle for a toothed stand-off device and lists a fixed Cylinder Bore instead of Accu-Choke, so you give up the choke option. It ships with a bare rail and no sights. Buy it if you want that muzzle or plan to run an optic anyway.
The 590RM feeds from a 10 round detachable magazine. Mossberg says stabilizing ribs on the magazine engage the receiver for secure lockup, with a lever-style magazine release. Note the 2.75 inch chamber: the 590R takes 3 inch shells, the 590RM doesn’t. It is also 0.9 lb heavier, at 8 lb.

Testing Protocol
I tested a new 590R, model 50762, over three sessions in September at an outdoor range, between 60 and 78 degrees. I cleaned and lubricated it before the first shot and again at round 250, and ran it with the factory Cylinder Bore choke throughout.

Phase 1: Break-In
The first 150 rounds were Top Gun target loads. The action was stiff for the first couple of boxes and smoothed out steadily. At round 38 I short-stroked it, not pulling the compact forend fully back, and had to cycle again. That was me, not the gun, and it didn’t happen again once I got used to the shorter forend.
Phase 2: Reliability
Rounds 151 to 500 mixed target loads, both 2.75 inch buckshot loads, slugs and the 3 inch magnums. Every shell fed, fired and ejected. The beveled loading gate made topping off the tube quicker than on my older 590, and the exposed follower let me feel when the tube was empty. The heat shield stayed comfortable to touch through fast strings.
Phase 3: Patterns and Slugs
At 15 yards, Federal Flite Control kept all eight pellets in a 5 inch group, and Winchester Super-X 9 pellet spread to about 9 inches. Remington Sluggers from a rest at 50 yards grouped at 3.2 inches using the MBUS 3 sights. The flat trigger broke at 6 lb 4 oz on my gauge, clean for a pump gun.
Tracking & Observations
After 500 rounds, the action bars and bolt showed normal polish, and the parkerizing had worn slightly at the loading gate. The stock held its position under recoil on every setting I used, and the rotary safety still clicked positively between SAFE and FIRE. The heat shield didn’t loosen.

A 5 inch Flite Control pattern at 15 yards is tight enough for any room in a house, and the Accu-Choke threads let you tighten other loads if you need to. Slug groups around 3 inches at 50 yards with iron sights are good for a defensive shotgun. An optic on the top rail would tighten them further.
Ergonomics & Recoil (9/10)
The rotary safety is the best part. My thumb swept it to FIRE without the gun leaving my shoulder, exactly as it would on an AR. The pistol grip and adjustable stock put your hands and face where they belong, and the 3 inch magnums were stout but controllable at a 13.5 inch length of pull.
Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)
The parkerizing was even and the stock locked up solidly with no wobble. The action was stiff for the first couple of boxes before it smoothed out, which is normal for a new Mossberg pump. Everything else felt like the durable, no-nonsense 590 it’s built on.
