Quick Take

The TriStar Viper G2 is one of the cheapest gas-operated semi-auto shotguns you can buy new. It’s a 3 inch field gun with a 5-round tube, a vent rib, a fiber optic bead and Mobil choke threads. TriStar imports it and backs it with a five-year warranty.

We put 500 rounds through a 12 gauge Viper G2 Synthetic with a 26 inch barrel, item 24106. It ran every heavy field load and every 1 1/8 ounce target load. It stuttered only on 1 ounce light target shells, which TriStar itself says are below its minimum.

At $621.99 on the street, it costs about $111 less than a Mossberg 940 Pro Field. There’s a catch. You have to feed it properly, especially while it’s new.

Best For: Hunters who want a soft-shooting gas gun for ducks, doves and upland birds on a tight budget. Not for shooters who live on cheap 1 ounce clays loads, or anyone who needs 3 1/2 inch shells.

Design Intent: TriStar’s Budget Gas Gun

TriStar Arms of North Kansas City, Missouri calls itself “The Value Experts,” and the Viper G2 is the gun that built that name. It’s a gas-operated field shotgun made to cost far less than a Beretta or Benelli while borrowing the choke threads those brands use.

TriStar says every design is “rigorously tested 5,000 rounds for endurance.” The recipe is simple: a 3 inch chamber, a chrome-lined barrel and chamber, a 5-round tube with a shot plug, and a shim kit to change drop and cast. A manual magazine cut-off lets you swap the shell in the chamber without cycling one from the tube.

Gas operation is the point. Some of the gas from each shot works the action, which spreads out recoil and makes the gun feel softer than an inertia gun of the same weight. Our inertia vs gas shotgun guide explains the trade-off in detail.

The 2022 Viper G2 .410 Recall

In August 2022, TriStar recalled certain Viper G2 .410 shotguns. Its notice says that “if a user prematurely releases a shotshell while loading or unloading, the unretained shotshell could potentially contact the Bolt Lock Button inside the loading port and detonate.”

TriStar tells owners of affected guns not to load, fire, use or sell them until the upgrade is done. The fix is a free upgraded trigger housing assembly. TriStar sends a prepaid label, you mail in only the trigger housing, and it comes back upgraded.

What it means for you: the recall covers the .410 only, not the 12 or 20 gauge we tested. If you’re buying a used .410, enter its serial on TriStar’s recall page first, or call TriStar at 816-421-1400.

TriStar Viper G2 Variants

The Viper G2 family is large. These are the main versions with TriStar’s list prices.

Viper G2 Synthetic: 12 or 20 gauge, 26 or 28 in., 6.1 to 6.9 lb From $621.99 street

Viper G2 Wood: Turkish walnut, 12, 16, 20, 28 gauge and .410 $869 to $939 MSRP

Viper G2 Compact: 13 in. length of pull, 12, 20 and .410 From $809 MSRP

Viper G2 Turkey: 24 in. barrel, extended turkey choke $949 to $1,019 MSRP

Viper G2 PRO: oversized controls, overmolded grips, larger loading port $989 to $1,209 MSRP

Viper Max: 3 1/2 in. chamber, two gas pistons, 7.4 lb $1,039 MSRP

TriStar also lists camo versions in Realtree Edge and Realtree Max-7 at $919, and a left-hand Synthetic at $849. The PRO Sporting clays model starts at $969 with a raised target rib and four extended chokes.

One thing the listings do not make clear: the plain Viper G2 stops at 3 inch shells. If you shoot 3 1/2 inch waterfowl loads, the Viper Max is TriStar’s gun for that job.

Competitor Comparison

Budget semi-autos are a busy class. Here’s the Viper G2 against four guns people cross-shop it with.

Mossberg 940 Pro Field (from $732.99)

The 940 Pro is Mossberg’s newer gas gun with a 3 inch chamber and 4+1 capacity. It costs about $111 more than the Viper G2. You get a bigger dealer network and wide parts support for the money.

CZ 1012 (from $505.99)

The CZ 1012 is an inertia gun and costs about $116 less than the Viper G2. It has no gas system to clean. It kicks harder with heavy loads, and the Viper is the softer shooter for high-volume days.

Verdict: The Viper G2 is the cheapest true gas gun here. It gives up polish and ammo tolerance to the SX4 and the 940 Pro, and it beats the inertia guns on recoil. For more options, see our best shotguns under $1,000 and best budget shotgun guides.

Testing Protocol

Our test gun was a new Viper G2 Synthetic, item 24106, a 12 gauge with a 26 inch barrel and the factory chokes. We shot it over six range sessions and two dove hunts in August and September, from 58 to 91 degrees, on a skeet field, a patterning board and in the field.

Ammunition Log

  • Winchester Super-X 2 3/4 in. 1 1/4 oz #6 lead: 100 rounds
  • Federal Top Gun 2 3/4 in. 1 1/8 oz #8: 200 rounds
  • Winchester AA Light Target 2 3/4 in. 1 oz #8: 100 rounds
  • Kent Fasteel 3 in. 1 1/8 oz #2 steel: 100 rounds

Phase 1: Break-In

TriStar’s FAQ says a new shotgun needs a break-in period and recommends heavy loads for it. We cleaned and oiled the gun and fired 100 rounds of Winchester Super-X high brass first. No stoppages. The bolt locked open on every empty tube, all 100 rounds.

Phase 2: Reliability

The 200 rounds of Top Gun and 100 rounds of 3 inch Kent Fasteel ran without a stoppage. The Winchester AA 1 ounce light target load was a different story: six failures to eject in 100 rounds, all stovepipes that cleared with a pull of the bolt handle.

That lines up with TriStar’s own advice. Its FAQ gives a minimum of a 1 1/8 ounce load at 1,250 fps or a 1 ounce load at 1,290 fps for 12 gauge, and says anything lower has “a varying effect on function.” The AA load sits under both, so the stoppages were no surprise to us and should not be to you.

Phase 3: Patterning and Clays

We patterned at 40 yards on a 30 inch circle, five shots per load. The Modified tube put an average of 64% of the Kent #2 steel in the circle. The Full tube averaged 71% with the Super-X #6 lead. Point of impact ran slightly high, which suits a field gun for rising birds.

On the skeet field, with the Improved Cylinder tube and Top Gun, we broke 21 of 25 on our first round and 22 on the second. The fiber optic bead was easy to pick up against the trees.

Tracking & Observations

After 500 rounds the gas piston and cylinder were carbon-caked but still cycling. We cleaned them at 300 rounds and again at the end. The matte finish picked up a few scuffs from the truck rack and nothing else.

What This Means for You

  • Break-In: Shoot a box or four of heavy loads first.
  • Ammo Preference: Stay at or above TriStar’s minimum loads.
  • Maintenance: Clean the gas piston every 250 to 300 rounds.
  • Chokes: Any Mobil thread tube fits.
  • Used .410s: Check the serial on TriStar’s recall page.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (7/10)

With loads at or above TriStar’s minimum, our gun ran 400 rounds clean. With 1 ounce light target shells, it failed six times in 100. That’s why it scores lower than the SX4, which is known for cycling light loads.

Patterning (8/10)

Patterns were even with no big holes, and 71% through the Full tube is good for factory chokes. A slightly high point of impact helps on flushing birds and doves.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

At 6.8 pounds, the 26 inch Synthetic carries easily and swings quickly. Recoil with 3 inch steel was noticeably softer than with the inertia guns we’ve shot. The safety sits behind the trigger guard and is easy to find with a gloved finger.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (7/10)

The synthetic stock and forend are plain but tidy, with molded checkering that grips well when wet. The forend had a little play until we snugged the magazine cap. Nothing felt fragile, but it does not have the fit of a gun costing twice as much.

Value (8/10)

At $621.99, the Viper G2 is a gas semi-auto with a shim kit and Mobil chokes at close to pump gun money. The 940 Pro and SX4 are better guns, but they cost $111 to $238 more.

Features (8/10)

A 3 inch chamber, a chrome-lined barrel, a magazine cut-off, a shim kit and a fiber optic bead. That’s everything a field gun needs, and the Mobil threads make extra chokes cheap and easy to find.

Technical Deep Dive

Gas System and Action

The Viper G2 bleeds gas from the barrel into a piston under the forend, which drives the bolt back. The bolt locks open after the last round. To unload only the chamber, TriStar’s instructions say to push the lifter up slightly and open the action, which cuts off the magazine.

The safety blocks the trigger, hammer lever and hammer. The tube loads from the bottom, and the shot plug comes out by unscrewing the magazine cap.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Failures to eject on light loads: Use at least a 1 1/8 ounce load at 1,250 fps, per TriStar, and finish the break-in with heavy loads.
  • .410 recall: Some Viper G2 .410s need a free trigger housing upgrade. Check the serial on TriStar’s recall page.
  • Sluggish cycling after a few hundred rounds: Clean the gas piston and cylinder under the forend.
  • .410 ammo: TriStar says not to use Noble Sport (NSI) or PMC .410 ammo because of reliability issues.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The Viper G2 is a lot of shotgun for the money, but it is not for everyone.

  • High-volume clays shooters on cheap loads: The Winchester SX4, from $859.99, handles light loads better.
  • Goose hunters who want 3 1/2 inch shells: The Viper G2 stops at 3 inch. See our best goose hunting shotguns.
  • Anyone who hates cleaning: The CZ 1012, from $505.99, is an inertia gun with no gas system.
  • Used .410 buyers who won’t check a serial: Buy new, or check TriStar’s recall page first.

Final Verdict

The TriStar Viper G2 is a soft-shooting, easy-carrying gas semi-auto at a pump gun price. Ours ran 400 rounds of proper loads clean, patterned evenly and broke clays well. Its one real weakness is light target loads, and TriStar tells you so up front.

For about $622, it’s a smart first semi-auto for ducks, doves and upland birds. Break it in with heavy loads and feed it what TriStar recommends. For more field guns, see our best shotgun for duck hunting and best dove hunting shotguns guides.

Specs and prices in this TriStar Viper G2 review come from TriStar’s Viper G2 product page, its FAQ and its recall notice. Street prices are what our live cards showed on September 27, 2026.

Final Score: 7.6/10. The best-value gas semi-auto for hunters who feed it proper loads.

FAQ: TriStar Viper G2

Is the TriStar Viper G2 a good shotgun?

Yes, for the money. Ours ran 400 rounds of proper loads without a stoppage, patterned 71% at 40 yards through the Full tube and broke 21 and 22 of 25 on skeet. It struggled only with 1 ounce light target loads.

What shells does the Viper G2 need to cycle?

TriStar's minimum for 12 gauge is a 1 1/8 ounce load at 1,250 fps or a 1 ounce load at 1,290 fps. For 20 gauge it is 7/8 ounce at 1,210 fps. TriStar says anything lower has a varying effect on function.

Was the TriStar Viper G2 recalled?

Yes, but only certain Viper G2 .410 shotguns, in 2022. A shell released too early while loading or unloading could hit the bolt lock button and fire. TriStar upgrades the trigger housing free; check the serial on its recall page.

How much does the Viper G2 cost?

TriStar lists the Viper G2 Synthetic at $789 and the Wood at $869. On September 27, 2026, Palmetto State Armory had the 12 gauge 26 inch Synthetic at $621.99.

Does the Viper G2 need a break-in?

Yes. TriStar says most new shotguns need a break-in period and recommends heavy loads during it. We fired 100 rounds of high brass first.

What chokes does the TriStar Viper G2 use?

It uses Beretta/Benelli Mobil style choke tubes and comes with Improved Cylinder, Modified and Full, plus a choke box and wrench.

Can the Viper G2 shoot 3 1/2 inch shells?

No. The Viper G2 has a 3 inch chamber, and the 16 gauge is 2 3/4 inch. TriStar's Viper Max takes 3 1/2 inch shells.

TriStar Viper G2 or Mossberg 940 Pro?

The 940 Pro Field cost about $111 more on our cards and has wider dealer and parts support. The Viper G2 is the better pick if price decides it and you feed it TriStar's recommended loads.
