Why Most Carry Guns Still Favour the Right Hand
About one shooter in ten is left-handed, and the gun industry has spent most of its history building for the other nine. That has got much better in the last decade, but it has not got uniformly better, and the marketing does not always tell you which side of the line a particular gun falls on.
There are two controls that decide whether a pistol works for you. The magazine release, which you use every time you reload, and the slide stop, which you may or may not use depending on how you were taught. Everything else on a modern striker gun is hand-agnostic.
I shoot left-handed. Every gun below has been carried, not just handled on a shop counter, and I have listed exactly what each one does with those two controls rather than repeating a spec sheet at you. The VP9SK is the one gun on this list that needed no design compromise to suit a left-handed shooter, because HK never treated ambidexterity as an afterthought. The magazine release is a paddle at the rear of the trigger guard, so you drop a mag with your trigger finger from either side. There is no button to move to the other side, because there is no button.
The slide release sits on both sides of the frame as standard. Combined with the paddle, that means a lefty runs this gun exactly the way a right-hander does, at the same speed, with no gunsmithing and no parts ordered.
The paddle does take a session or two to get used to if you have carried Glocks your whole life. Push down with the trigger finger rather than reaching a thumb across. If the VP9SK is the right answer and the wrong price, the P-10 C is the sensible one. The slide release is ambidextrous from the factory, and the magazine release reverses with a punch and a few minutes at the kitchen table. That covers both controls a left-handed shooter actually cares about.
The trigger is the surprise. CZ built a striker gun that breaks cleaner than most of what sits either side of it in the display case, and they did it at a price that keeps undercutting itself. Ours has been reliable across everything we have fed it.
The grip is on the chunky side, which is worth knowing if you have small hands. Try one before you commit, or look at the Walther further down this list.
Best For: most left-handed carriers. It is the value pick and it is not close.

The F-Series started life marketed at women and that label undersold it. What Walther actually built was a PDP with a shorter trigger reach, a reduced grip circumference and a lighter slide rack. Those are hand-size features, not gender features, and plenty of men shoot it better than the standard gun.
For a left-handed shooter the useful part is the slide stop. It runs down both sides of the frame and it is long enough that you do not need precise thumb placement to hit it. The magazine release reverses.

Best For: left-handed shooters with smaller hands, or anyone who has never got on with a chunky grip.

The P320 is the most flexible gun here, and the reason is that the serialised part is the fire control unit rather than the frame. Buy one, then move it between grip modules and slide lengths as your carry needs change. Nothing else on this list does that.
The controls are ambidextrous throughout. The only lever that is not is the takedown, and you touch that when you strip the gun for cleaning, never under time pressure. For carry purposes it reads as fully ambi.
The trigger is the weak spot. It is perfectly serviceable and it is not in the same conversation as the Walther or the HK. Plenty of people never notice.
Best For: a left-hander who wants one serialised gun that can be several different pistols over the years.

Micro-compacts are where ambidextrous controls get dropped to save width and cost, so the MC9 stands out. The slide release is extended, serrated and present on both sides, which is not something you can say about most guns this size.
The magazine release is a reversible polymer button. Swap it and the gun runs left-handed properly. What you get for the money after that is faintly ridiculous: a trigger better than guns at twice the price, plus a holster and spare magazine in the box.

The Glock earns its slot on ecosystem rather than ergonomics. Whatever holster, light or sight you want, somebody makes it for a 19, and they make a left-handed version. That matters more than it sounds when you are the one in ten who cannot buy off the peg.
The Gen 6 also quietly improved things for lefties. The Shield Plus is the honest partial. The magazine release is ambidextrous as standard, which covers the control you use most, but the slide stop sits on one side and it stays there.
For a lot of left-handed shooters that is a non-issue, because they slingshot the slide rather than thumbing the lever, and a slingshot is hand-agnostic. If that is how you run a gun, the Shield Plus costs less than most of this list and conceals better than all of it.
If you do use the slide stop as a release, buy something further up this page instead. There is no fix for it here.

The Ambi Label Does Not Carry Down the Model Line
This is the trap, and it caught me before it caught you. A manufacturer builds a genuinely ambidextrous pistol, the reviews say so, and then the carry-sized version of that same gun quietly drops the ambi parts to save width and cost. The name on the slide does not change. The controls do.

Both of those carry guns are perfectly good pistols. Neither belongs on a list like this one, and both of them turn up on other people’s lists because the full-size model earned the reputation and the reviewer never checked the small one.
So the rule is simple. Check the exact model you are buying, not the family. Look at a photograph of the right side of the frame. If there is no slide stop lever there, there is no ambi slide stop, whatever the brand page says about the platform.
How to Choose, and What to Buy After the Gun
Work out first whether you actually use the slide stop as a release. Plenty of people are taught to slingshot the slide instead, and if that is you then a single-side lever costs you nothing and the Shield Plus moves several places up this list. If you do thumb the lever, you want one of the top six.
Then buy a proper holster. A right-handed holster worn on your left hip points the grip the wrong way and there is no technique that fixes it.
