The Guns of TV Legends: 10 Firearms That Defined Television

Movies get the credit, but television did the heavier lifting. A film gives a gun two hours. A series gives it eight seasons, week after week, until the gun and the character become the same thing in your head. Say “Magnum” and you see a mustache and a 1911. Say “Rifleman” and you hear that lever spinning. The guns of TV legends stuck because they showed up every single week.

I pulled this list from the actual armorer records and screen-capture archives rather than from memory, and a couple of the entries surprised me. One of the most famous TV rifles of all time isn’t the gun almost everybody thinks it is. Here’s what these characters really carried, and what you can actually buy today.

Table of Contents

1. Sonny Crockett’s Bren Ten (Miami Vice, 1984)

No TV gun has a better story, and it’s a story that ends in bankruptcy.

The Bren Ten was Dornaus & Dixon’s big swing: essentially a beefed-up CZ 75 chambered for the original 10mm Norma Auto, a round that ran hot enough to beat up the guns firing it. In 1984 that was the most modern thing you could hang off a detective’s shoulder, which is exactly why Michael Mann wanted it.

Here’s the part most people don’t know. Crockett’s guns never came off an assembly line. Mann’s production company ordered two, and Tom Dornaus built them personally from components that weren’t deemed good enough for production pistols but were fine for a gun that only ever fired blanks. They were built from the ground up to cycle .45 ACP blanks, and Mann specifically asked for hard-chromed slides so the pistol would read clearly on camera. That bright slide you remember? That was a lighting decision.

Dornaus & Dixon folded. The producers had a standing rule against putting discontinued guns on screen, so Crockett moved to a Smith & Wesson 645 in season three. The Bren Ten died as a product and became immortal as a prop.

The cartridge outlived the gun, though. If you want the closest living relative, the EAA Witness is built on the same CZ 75 pattern the Bren Ten was derived from, and the Glock 20 is what most people actually carry a 10mm in now.

2. Thomas Magnum’s Colt Government Model (Magnum P.I., 1980)

Magnum carried a Colt MK IV Series 70 Government Model, the commercial version of the M1911A1, and the show treated it as the pistol he’d brought home from Vietnam. He rarely holstered it properly. Most of the time it just rode inside the waistband at the small of his back, which is very much a man who used to be a Naval Intelligence officer and no longer files paperwork about anything.

The production detail is better than the fiction. A former propmaster on the show has said the original gun was a genuine .45 ACP 1911, but they swapped to a 9mm version because .45 blanks were too hard to source on location in Hawaii. In some episodes it isn’t a Colt at all. Watch closely and you’ll catch a Star Model B standing in, because 9mm blanks ran more reliably and the Star was the common 1911 stunt double at the time.

3. Lucas McCain’s Winchester 1892 (The Rifleman, 1958)

This is the most famous rifle in television history and the mechanics behind it are genuinely clever.

Chuck Connors carried a Winchester 1892 saddle ring carbine fitted with an oversized lever loop so he could work the action one-handed while riding. The opening titles show him firing twelve shots in under five seconds, and that wasn’t camera trickery. Connors had a machine screw tapped into the trigger guard so that closing the lever tripped the trigger every time. Work the action, the rifle fires. A twist of the screw disabled it for normal shooting.

Three rifles did the work across the run: two real Winchesters and a Spanish El Tigre copy that took the abuse in stunt scenes. And for the pedants, yes, it’s an anachronism. The show is set in the 1880s and the rifle wasn’t made until 1892.

4. Hannibal Smith’s Ruger Mini-14 (The A-Team, 1983)

Ask around and you’ll be told the A-Team ran Ruger AC-556 select-fire rifles. They didn’t, and the evidence is right there on screen.

From season two the team settled on the stainless Ruger Mini-14 with a factory folding stock, partly because the producers didn’t want to pay for new hardware every week. These were semi-auto only. Watch the firing scenes and you’ll see the actors pulling triggers fast while very few cases eject, with full-auto added in the sound mix and squib hits cut in to sell it. The giveaway is the barrel: the show’s rifles wear plain barrels with flash hiders, not the government-profile barrel with flash hider and bayonet lug that an AC-556 carries.

The rifles were bought outright for the production and lived in the show’s prop containers for the whole run. In the mid-1980s, before any of the assault weapon bans, a Title I Ruger traveled across state lines with no paperwork drama. That was the real reason.

5. Rick Grimes’ Colt Python (The Walking Dead, 2010)

Rick’s six-inch Colt Python is the rare prop that earns its place in the story. It’s established as his King County Sheriff’s Department service weapon before the outbreak, and he goes back for it by cleaning out the station armory. That’s why he keeps hauling a heavy .357 revolver around a world full of abandoned rifles. It’s the last piece of the job he used to have.

The show is honest about the cost, too. He burns all six on the Terminus hunters, runs dry mid-fight in season two and has to pull Glocks off two dead deputies, and hands the gun over at the Alexandria gate. A six-shot revolver in a zombie apocalypse is a character decision, not a tactical one.

The reissue is very good. We put it through its paces in the Colt Python review, and it sits near the top of our best revolvers list.

6. Crockett’s Smith & Wesson 645 (Miami Vice, season three)

The replacement deserves its own entry, because the reasoning behind it says everything about the show. Smith & Wesson’s second-generation autos were brand new, and the producers wanted Crockett holding whatever counted as state of the art that year. The 645 was a stainless .45 with a big square profile that photographed beautifully against a white linen jacket. Miami Vice picked guns the way it picked cars.

7. Daryl Dixon’s Crossbow (The Walking Dead)

Not a firearm, but it belongs on any honest list of TV weapons that defined a character. Daryl started with a Horton Scout HD 125 in season one, hunting deer with it before he ever pointed it at anything walking. From season five he moved to a Stryker StrykeZone 380. The appeal was always practical rather than cool: it’s quiet, and quiet is the whole game when noise draws a herd.

8. Jonathan Higgins’ Walther P38 (Magnum P.I.)

Higgins carrying a P38 is a small, sharp bit of character writing. A former British Army sergeant-major of his vintage would plausibly have brought a war trophy home, and the show lets the gun do that work without a speech about it. He also keeps a Remington 700 he’s forever cleaning and a Mossberg 500 he shoots skeet with, which is exactly the arsenal you’d expect from a man who runs someone else’s estate and enjoys it far too much.

9. Crockett’s Detonics Combatmaster (Miami Vice)

The gun nobody talks about. Crockett wore a Detonics Combatmaster in an ankle holster as a backup through the early seasons, and it’s the most realistic thing in his whole loadout. The Combatmaster was a genuinely chopped 1911, one of the first serious attempts at a carry-sized .45, and an ankle rig was standard practice for a working vice detective. The Bren Ten got the poster. The Detonics got the job.

10. Marshal Micah Torrance’s Colt Single Action Army (The Rifleman)

Paul Fix played North Fork’s town marshal for five seasons with a Colt Single Action Army on his hip, and it’s a useful reminder that the SAA was the default sidearm of the entire TV western era. Every one of these shows ran on Colts. The Rifleman just happened to give the rifle top billing.

If shooting these interests you more than collecting them, start with what cowboy action shooting actually involves.

What the guns of TV legends have in common

Two things, mostly. The first is visibility. Hard-chromed slides, stainless finishes, oversized lever loops, six-inch barrels. These guns were chosen because they read on a small, low-resolution screen from across a living room, and that’s why so many of them look flashier than what a real detective or deputy would carry.

The second is repetition. A movie gun gets one great scene. A TV gun gets a hundred merely good ones, and that’s what welds it to the character. Nobody would remember the Bren Ten if it had appeared in a single film. Two seasons of Friday nights did it.

Frequently asked questions

What gun did Sonny Crockett carry in Miami Vice?

A Bren Ten in seasons one and two, then a Smith & Wesson 645 from season three after Dornaus & Dixon went under. He also carried a SIG Sauer P220 in the pilot and a Detonics Combatmaster as an ankle backup.

Did the A-Team really use Ruger AC-556 machine guns?

No. They used semi-auto Ruger Mini-14 rifles with stainless finishes and factory folding stocks. The full-auto fire was sound effects, fast trigger work and editing. The rifles have plain barrels with flash hiders rather than the AC-556’s government barrel with a bayonet lug.

How did Chuck Connors fire his rifle so fast in The Rifleman?

A machine screw tapped into the trigger guard tripped the trigger every time the lever closed, so working the action fired the rifle. Combined with the large lever loop, that’s how the opening sequence gets twelve shots in under five seconds.

What revolver does Rick Grimes use in The Walking Dead?

A six-inch Colt Python in .357 Magnum, established as his sheriff’s department service weapon from before the outbreak.

Can you still buy a Bren Ten?

Only on the collector market, and originals command serious money. For a shooter, the EAA Witness in 10mm is built on the same CZ 75 pattern the Bren Ten came from, and the Glock 20 is the most common modern 10mm.

Half the guns in this series are still in production, from the Colt 1911 to the Mini-14 to the Glock 20. Our handgun deals page tracks the pistols and cheap 1911 pistols under $500 covers the Government clones.
