The Guns of The Rip (2026): Every Weapon Identified

Quick Answer: Matt Damon’s Lt. Dane Dumars runs a short-barreled Troy M7A1 carbine and a Gen 5 Glock 17. Ben Affleck’s J.D. Byrne carries a custom AR-15 with an EOTech, then picks up his dead captain’s SIG Sauer P228. The one gun in the film that was really in the 2016 raid it’s based on is the TEC-9 in the bucket of cash.

Those are the headline picks. The rest of The Rip guns, 16 in all, are identified below, each one cross-checked frame by frame against the Internet Movie Firearms Database, with the police-procedure claims checked against Miami-Dade’s own written weapons policy. Spoilers from the second half of the film are marked.

The Real Raid Behind The Rip

The Rip, Joe Carnahan’s Netflix thriller released on January 16, 2026, is built on a real Miami-Dade drug bust. In late June 2016, Miami-Dade officer Chris Casiano and his Tactical Narcotics Team served a search warrant on a house in Miami Lakes and found 24 five-gallon Home Depot buckets packed with $100 bills.

Time puts the total at $24 million, a department record, and policy said every dollar had to be counted by hand, twice, on site, before anybody went home.

The film trims the haul to $20,650,480 and invents the dirty cops. Nobody stole a dollar in real life. What it keeps is the texture, and Casiano made sure of that.

He’s credited as the film’s technical advisor, and he’s on screen too, playing a TNT detective named Al Pardo. The key armorer was David Fencl.

That is why the guns in The Rip look like a real narcotics unit’s guns rather than a props truck’s. Nobody on the team carries the same rifle. There’s a reason for that, and it’s written down in the department’s policy manual. We’ll get to it.

1. Troy M7A1: Dumars’ Short Rifle

• Who carries it: Lt. Dane Dumars (Matt Damon), start to finish

• Barrel: 7.5 inches, capped with Troy’s Claymore muzzle brake
• Legal status for you: a short-barreled rifle under the NFA

Damon’s primary weapon is a Troy M7A1, the stubby 5.56 carbine Troy Industries sold as a PDW. Its 7.5-inch barrel wears a Claymore brake, and on the collapsible PDW stock the whole thing is barely longer than a submachine gun. For a guy who spends half the film climbing in and out of an armored truck and clearing a cramped stash house, it’s the right tool, and it’s the most interesting long gun in the movie.

It’s also the one you’ll have the most trouble buying. The civilian rifle with that barrel and stock is a short-barreled rifle, so it’s an NFA item that needs ATF registration. The tax stamp for SBRs dropped to $0 at the start of 2026, but the paperwork and the wait didn’t go anywhere. It is not in our price catalog either, so there’s no card here.

2. Glock 17: Gen 5 Up Front, Gen 3 in the Background

The Glock 17 is the default sidearm in The Rip. Dumars, J.D., the DEA agents and the FBI all carry one. The fun part is that the film doesn’t use one generation.

Dumars’ pistol is a Gen 5. The shot inside the MRAP gives it away, with the beveled front of the slide and the ambidextrous slide stop, and the remaster above makes both plain.

The DEA agents’ holstered Glocks, on the other hand, have finger grooves and the older grip texture, which makes them Gen 3s. That’s accurate in a quiet way. Agencies don’t swap every pistol at once, and a mixed rack is exactly what you’d see in real life.

There’s a timing gag, too. Glock’s Gen 6 hit shelves on January 20, 2026, four days after The Rip streamed. The film missed being out of date by less than a week.

3. SIG Sauer P228: The Captain’s Gun J.D. Inherits

Lina Esco’s Captain Jackie Velez carries a SIG Sauer P228, and it’s the only DA/SA hammer gun among the good guys. Spoiler for the opening: she’s killed in a rainy ambush in the first act, and J.D. Byrne ends up with her pistol. He holsters it on his vest and carries it the rest of the film, all the way to the standoff at the end.

It’s the best bit of gun storytelling in the movie. Nobody mentions it once.

A P228 is also a believable captain’s gun. The U.S. military adopted it in 1988 as the M11, so it has real service pedigree. Miami-Dade’s policy lets officers carry any department-approved semi-auto once they’ve passed the transition course, so a veteran carrying something other than a Glock fits.

SIG no longer builds the P228 for the commercial market. Its replacement is the P229, and the P229 M11-A1 on the card above is the version dressed to look like the old military gun. It’s a lovely pistol to shoot, heavy enough that 9mm feels soft, and the double-action first pull is one of the best you’ll find.

Best For: The shooter who wants a hammer, a real double-action trigger and a gun that’ll outlive them.

4. The TEC-9 in the Bucket: The Gun That Was Really There

Midway through the search, Dumars reaches into a bucket of cash and pulls out an Intratec TEC-9. He checks it and pulls the charging handle. It’s a throwaway beat, and it’s the most accurate thing in the film.

The real 2016 inventory didn’t stop at money. Next to the buckets, Time reports, officers found marijuana labeled “Chernobyl” and “Super Skunk”, four kinds of anabolic steroids, “and a loaded TEC-9 pistol.” Casiano was in that house. When a technical advisor has actually pulled a TEC-9 out of a stash house, it’s no surprise one ends up in the script.

It’s a very Miami gun, too. Intratec was a Miami company. The TEC-9 was one of the guns banned by name in the 1994 federal ban, the company kept going with a renamed version, and it closed for good in 2001.

Every TEC-9 you’ll see now is at least a quarter-century old and sits on the used market. We don’t put a price card on it because there’s no new one to buy, and frankly it was never a good pistol. It was cheap, heavy and crude, and that’s exactly why it ended up in so many crime scenes.

5. The TNT Team’s Custom AR-15s

J.D. Byrne, Teyana Taylor’s Numa Baptiste and Catalina Sandino Moreno’s Lolo Salazar all run custom AR-15 carbines with EOTech holographic sights. IMFDB ties them to the builds seen in The Terminal List: BCM lower receivers and Knight’s Armament-style handguards, here with shorter barrels and different stocks. No two are set up quite alike.

That mismatch is realistic, and here’s the policy that explains it. Miami-Dade’s use-of-force chapter says certified officers “will carry departmentally issued or personally owned rifles” once they’ve completed the department’s 16-hour rifle course, used an approved manufacturer and had the rifle inspected and logged. A narcotics team of veterans who each bought their own carbine is precisely what that rule produces.

The same chapter also explains the one thing the film stretches. Some of these carbines appear to fire full-auto. Under that policy, burst and full-auto weapons are department-supplied, and a comparable privately owned gun needs “written authorization of the Director.” A detective’s personal AR spraying on auto is Hollywood. The rifle itself isn’t.

6. Mike Ro’s Seekins Precision AR-15

Steven Yeun’s Detective Mike Ro stands apart from the rest of the team with a Seekins Precision custom AR-15 wearing a long free-float rail and a Trijicon MRO red dot.

Seekins is an Idaho maker better known for precision bolt guns, and their ARs are built to a standard well above the basic carbine. In the climax Ro fires it from the hip at the FBI agents and reloads on the move, and the long rail and the MRO read clearly in every frame.

7. HK MP5K and the MR556A1 “HK416”

The Heckler & Koch guns in The Rip are a suppressed MP5K and civilian MR556A1 rifles dressed as HK416Ds. Spoiler warning for the third act: they belong to the other side of the story. A suppressed MP5K turns up in the hands of one of the gunmen, and later Kyle Chandler’s DEA agent Matty Nix fires one at J.D. out the back of the armored truck during the chase.

The DEA and FBI long guns are HK too, or they look it. IMFDB identifies them as civilian MR556A1 rifles mocked up to resemble the select-fire HK416D. That’s a common film trick: the MR556A1 is HK’s semi-auto version of the same rifle, so it’s easy to source and it looks right on camera.

You can own a genuine HK version of both. The SP5K is HK’s own civilian MP5K, a semi-auto pistol, and it costs about three grand. 8. Remington 870: The One Gun Miami-Dade Policy Names

Remington 870s turn up all over the film: a sawed-off one in the opening ambush, a police riot gun beside a Hialeah patrolman, and a pistol-grip 870 Express that J.D. grabs for the climax and uses on the truck’s tires.

This is the one gun on the page the department names outright. Miami-Dade’s policy lets officers carry issued or personally owned shotguns, as long as they’re “Manufactured by Remington, Model 870, or Smith and Wesson, Model 3000; 18-20 inch barrel; 12-gauge.” The props department got that exactly right.

And it’s the best-value gun here, for a police reason. When departments retire their 870s, the guns come back onto the civilian market as trade-ins, often worn on the outside and barely used on the inside.

9. The Sawed-Off Over-and-Under That Kills Velez

Captain Velez is killed with a sawed-off over-and-under shotgun. Big spoiler: the masked gunman who fires it in the opening ambush is later revealed as Matty Nix, and he walks out of the Marine Stadium lot with the gun still in his hands. It’s a telling choice of gun. A break-action keeps its empty hulls in the chamber, so it leaves no brass on the ground, and with the barrels cut down it hides under a jacket.

Cutting a shotgun’s barrel under 18 inches without registering it is a federal felony, so the only legal version of this gun is an NFA-registered short-barreled shotgun. 10. The Background Guns: M4A1, Mk 18, SG 551 and an AX308

The background guns in The Rip are M4A1 and Mk 18 Mod 0 carbines, a chrome AR-15, a SIG SG 551 and an Accuracy International AX308. Keep your eyes on the edges of the frame and the film fills in the rest.

DEA agents carry M4A1 carbines early and Mk 18 Mod 0s near the end. A cartel man confronting the TNT team carries a 14.5-inch AR-15 with a chrome upper and lower, which is exactly as subtle as it sounds. One of the gunmen runs past with a SIG SG 551, a Swiss rifle and an odd choice for a Miami street crew.

For the finale, an FBI sniper sets up on top of a police vehicle with an Accuracy International AX308. It’s the real thing, a .308 precision rifle that costs more than a used car.

Which Gun From The Rip Should You Buy?

Of all The Rip guns, the Remington 870 trade-in is the one I’d buy first. It’s the gun the real department actually specifies, it costs less than anything else on this page, and it’ll do the one job a home shotgun has to do. Add the Gen 5 Glock 17 and you’ve covered the practical side of this film for under a thousand dollars.

If you want the character gun, the P229 M11-A1 is the one I’d take. It is not the fastest pistol here, but it’s the best made, and it’s the gun that carries the only real emotion in the film.
