Quick Take

The Colt Delta Elite is a full-size, stainless 1911 chambered in 10mm Auto. Colt’s own launch notes call it the manufacturer often considered to have saved the 10mm from obscurity, and the Delta Elite is the pistol that did it. The current gun keeps the classic Government-size frame and adds a beavertail, an extended thumb safety and Novak white dot sights.

For this Colt Delta Elite review, I put 500 rounds through a standard O2020XE over three sessions. It had one stoppage, a failure to feed on hard cast bullets, and ran everything else. The 1911 grip and a 5 inch slide make full-power 10mm easy to manage. For hunting, the woods or just the fun of a big-bore 1911, it is a great gun to shoot.

Colt’s own price list has a detail worth knowing. The Optics-Ready Delta Elite lists at $1,349, the same as the standard gun, while the Rail model costs $150 more. If you might ever want a red dot, the optics cut costs nothing extra at list price.

This is the 10mm 1911 to buy if you want a Colt, and street prices often start more than $200 under list.

Best For: 1911 shooters who want 10mm power, hunters looking for a handgun for medium game, and hikers who want a steel-frame woods gun. Not for concealed carry, and not for anyone who wants double-stack capacity.

Design Intent: A 1911 for the Woods

Colt built the Delta Elite to give 1911 shooters more power than .45 ACP. When Colt launched the Rail model, its product director said the Delta Elite “started its life as tactical option for 1911 enthusiasts who required more stopping power than your tradition .45 ACP”, and that Colt had since seen it become “a great platform for hunting pig or other medium sized game.” Colt lists its purposes today as hunting and target, and personal protection and sport.

That fits the gun. A steel 1911 frame with a 5 inch barrel has the weight and grip angle to soak up 10mm, and the single action trigger makes long shots practical. Colt’s launch notes list the features of the redesigned Delta Elite: an upswept beavertail grip safety, an extended thumb safety, all stainless steel construction, composite stocks with Delta medallions and Novak white dot sights.

What Colt doesn’t publish

Colt’s current product page lists caliber, action, 8+1 capacity and state restrictions; the 5 inch barrel figure comes from retailer listings. It doesn’t list a weight, and the sight and grip details above come from Colt’s own launch notes rather than today’s spec box. If an exact weight matters for your holster or pack, weigh the gun at the counter before you buy.

Colt Delta Elite Variants

Colt sells four current Delta Elites, all 10mm and all 8+1, and retailers list each with a 5 inch barrel.

The Rail model has climbed $200 since Colt launched it at $1,299 in January 2017. Retailers also list older and limited editions, including used First Edition guns at collector prices; our cards leave those out.

The Optics-Ready Delta Elite

The Optics-Ready model looks like a standard Delta Elite with a black plate at the back of the slide. Colt’s instruction manual explains it: the gun ships with a cover plate that carries the rear sight. To fit a red dot, you remove four screws with a 5/64 inch hex key, lift off the cover plate and bolt on an adapter plate for your optic.

Colt makes three adapter plates, each marked with a letter, and each matches a common pistol red dot footprint:

  • Plate “A”: Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprint
  • Plate “B”: Trijicon RMR footprint
  • Plate “C”: RMS-C and K series footprint, as Colt words it

Colt’s store sells each plate for $99, and the manual doesn’t say one comes in the box, so budget for a plate on top of the optic. The manual calls for the four #6-32 plate screws to be torqued to 15 inch-pounds with a medium thread locker like Loctite 242, and warns Series 80 owners not to lose the firing pin safety plunger spring when the plate comes off. It also says to use only Colt factory plates.

In Colt’s photos, the Optics-Ready slide is marked simply “DELTA ELITE” with the Delta triangle, where the standard gun also reads “COLT 10mm AUTO”. We didn’t find the Optics-Ready model in our retailer catalog, so check your local dealer for it.

Competitor Comparison

The Delta Elite sits between the budget 10mm 1911s from Tisas and Rock Island, at about half its price, and Dan Wesson, at about twice. These are the three it meets most often at the counter.

Tisas 1911 10mm (from $630.99)

The Tisas costs about half as much as the Colt on our cards. For a first 10mm 1911, or one that will live in a truck, it’s hard to argue with. The Colt’s case is the name on the slide, the finish, and resale value. Our Tisas 1911 Duty DS review covers the brand’s service-style 1911.

Dan Wesson 1911 10mm (from $2,299)

Dan Wesson sits at the other end, at about twice the Colt’s street price on our cards. If you want a semi-custom 10mm 1911, it’s the step up. For most buyers, the Delta Elite is the better value.

Verdict: The Delta Elite is the middle choice: far more than a Tisas or Rock Island, far less than a Dan Wesson. You’re paying for the Colt name, Colt’s finish, and factory rail and optics-ready options.

Testing Protocol

I tested a new O2020XE over three sessions in September at an outdoor range, between 64 and 81 degrees, using the factory magazines. I cleaned and lubricated it before the first shot and again at round 250.

Ammunition Log

  • Blazer Brass 180 grain FMJ: 200 rounds
  • Federal American Eagle 180 grain FMJ: 150 rounds
  • Hornady Custom 180 grain XTP: 50 rounds
  • Hornady Critical Duty 175 grain FlexLock: 50 rounds
  • Underwood 200 grain hard cast flat nose: 50 rounds
  • Total: 500 rounds, 1 stoppage

Phase 1: Break-In

The first 200 rounds were Blazer Brass and American Eagle. The gun ran every round, locked back on every empty magazine and threw brass well clear to the right. Recoil is a firm push rather than a snap. The steel frame and 5 inch slide do their job.

Phase 2: Reliability

Rounds 201 to 500 mixed the last 150 rounds of ball with the two hollow points and the Underwood hard cast. The XTP and Critical Duty fed without a problem.

The one stoppage came with the Underwood, a flat-nosed bullet stubbing on the feed ramp on the first round of a magazine. A firm rack cleared it and the other 49 fed. If you want hard cast for bear country, test your load in your own gun first.

Phase 3: Accuracy

I shot five-shot groups at 25 yards from a rest. Hornady XTP printed the best group at 2.1 inches. Critical Duty averaged 2.4 inches, American Eagle 2.8 inches and the Underwood 3.1 inches.

The trigger broke at an average of 4 lb 12 oz on my gauge, with a short, clean single action pull. The Novak white dots are quick to pick up.

Tracking & Observations

After 500 rounds, the barrel hood and bushing showed polished wear marks and the slide rails had worn in. Nothing loosened, including the grip screws. The stainless cleaned up easily, and the 10mm left more carbon on the breech face than a .45 ACP would.

What This Means for You

  • Upgrade Impact: A red dot on the Optics-Ready model, or a light on the Rail.
  • Reliability: Ran ball and hollow points; test hard cast before you trust it.
  • Ammo Preference: Hornady XTP for hunting, 180 grain FMJ for practice.
  • Maintenance: Standard 1911 field strip; clean the breech face after each range day.
  • Accuracy Expectation: About 2 to 3 inches at 25 yards with jacketed loads.

Performance Testing Results

The Delta Elite had one stoppage in 500 rounds and a 2.1 inch best group at 25 yards, for 8.1 overall with reliability and value counted double.

Reliability (8/10)

One stoppage in 500 rounds, with the only flat-nosed load in the test. Ball and both hollow points ran clean. That is a good result for a new 1911, but anyone carrying hard cast in the woods should shoot a couple of boxes of it first.

Accuracy (9/10)

Groups of 2.1 to 3.1 inches at 25 yards are excellent for a service-size pistol in a hard-recoiling caliber. The single action trigger is the main reason. The 5 inch barrel wrings velocity out of 10mm, which matters if you’re hunting with it.

Ergonomics & Recoil (9/10)

The 1911 grip points naturally, and the upswept beavertail lets you choke up high on the gun, which keeps the muzzle flatter. The extended thumb safety is easy to ride. Full-power 10mm is a stout push in this gun, not a punishing one.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (9/10)

My gun had a tight slide-to-frame fit with no rattle, an even stainless finish and cleanly applied markings. The Delta medallion grips are a nice touch. It feels like a Colt, which is what you’re paying for.

Technical Deep Dive

The Delta Elite is a single-action, single-stack 1911 in 10mm Auto, which is why capacity is 8+1.

Why a 1911 Suits 10mm

The 10mm Auto is a longer, higher-pressure cartridge than .45 ACP, and the 1911 frame has room for it in a single-stack magazine. That’s why capacity is 8+1 rather than the double-stack numbers of a polymer 10mm. The trade is a thinner grip and a steel frame that absorbs recoil.

Controls and Sights

Colt’s launch notes list an upswept beavertail grip safety, an extended thumb safety and Novak white dot sights. On the Optics-Ready model, the rear sight sits on the removable cover plate, so it comes off when you fit an optic plate. Plan on a red dot tall enough to use on its own, or pick a plate and optic combination that suits you.

Common Problems & Solutions

The Delta Elite ran well for us, and most problems come from ammo choice, optic plates or where you live.

  • Flat-nosed bullets stubbing on the ramp: Test hard cast loads in your own gun, and pick one that feeds before you carry it.
  • Loose optic plate screws: Torque the #6-32 plate screws to 15 inch-pounds with Loctite 242, and check them regularly, as Colt’s manual says.
  • A lost spring under the cover plate: On Series 80 guns, lift the plate slowly so the firing pin safety plunger spring doesn’t fly out.
  • Buying in a restricted state: Colt lists California, Massachusetts and Washington DC as restricted for the Delta Elite. Check with your dealer first.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The Delta Elite is a full-size, 8+1 steel 1911 at Colt prices, so these buyers are better served elsewhere.

  • Buyers in California, Massachusetts or DC: Colt lists all three as restricted.
  • Anyone who wants capacity: A Glock 20 holds nearly twice as many rounds of 10mm.
  • Budget buyers trying 10mm for the first time: A Tisas or Rock Island 10mm 1911 costs several hundred dollars less.
  • Concealed carriers: A full-size steel 1911 with a 5 inch barrel is a lot of gun to hide. See our best 10mm carry pistols.

Final Verdict

The Colt Delta Elite is still the 10mm 1911 others get measured against. It shot accurately, ran ball and hollow points without a hitch, and the 1911 grip makes full-power 10mm pleasant to shoot. It’s expensive next to a Tisas or Rock Island, it holds only 8+1, and Colt lists it as restricted in three jurisdictions, but for a Colt-quality 10mm those are fair trades.

If there’s any chance you’ll want a red dot, buy the Optics-Ready model; it lists at the same price as the standard gun. Otherwise, the standard O2020XE is the best buy. For more options, see our best 10mm pistols, the best Colt 1911s, our Colt 1911 Government review, the Colt Combat Commander and Colt Gold Cup reviews, and our guide to 10mm for bear defense.

Final Score: 8.1/10: the original 10mm 1911, and still one of the best.

Specs and prices in this review come from Colt’s Delta Elite product page, its Optics-Ready Delta Elite page, the Colt 1911 Optics Ready instructions and Colt’s Delta Elite Rail Gun announcement.
