Quick Take

The Christensen Arms BA Tactical is a bolt-action precision rifle built around a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. Everything else is what you’d expect on a match rifle: a detachable AICS-pattern magazine, a 20 MOA rail, a TriggerTech trigger and a stock that adjusts for comb, length of pull and cant. The carbon barrel is the point. It lets Christensen quote a 7.4 pound starting weight on a rifle that shoots like a heavy one.

I shot a 6.5 Creedmoor with the 26 inch barrel for 500 rounds. Every load I tried went under an inch at 100 yards, the best at 0.52 inches, and the rifle never failed to feed, fire or extract from its own magazine. It is not cheap. But Christensen puts a sub-MOA guarantee behind it, and mine cleared that bar with room to spare.

The short version: this is a precision rifle you can carry up a hill, and it costs about what a custom build would.

Best For: Long range shooters and hunters who want match accuracy and a tactical stock without a 12 pound rifle. Not for anyone shopping on price, since a Bergara Premier HMR Pro groups well for about $900 less.

Design Intent: Take the Weight Out of a Tactical Rifle

Most tactical bolt guns get their accuracy from mass. A heavy barrel stays stiff and soaks up heat, and a heavy chassis keeps the rifle still. That works on a bench and hurts on a hike. Christensen’s answer is the barrel it’s known for: a button rifled 416R stainless core, turned down and wrapped in carbon fiber, which Christensen says cuts weight and adds stiffness.

The rest of the rifle borrows from the match world. The receiver face is trued, the barrel is free floated and match chambered, and the bottom metal is billet aluminum that takes AICS-pattern magazines. The stock is carbon fiber composite with stainless pillars and spot bedding, five flush cups, a 4 inch Picatinny stub up front and M-LOK slots along the forearm.

Christensen builds it in Gunnison, Utah, and backs it with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner. The accuracy guarantee is sub-MOA.

Christensen Arms BA Tactical Variants

Every BA Tactical wears the same finish, black Cerakote with a black stock and gray webbing, and every one lists at $2,949.99. That flat price is unusual. A .338 Lapua with a 27 inch barrel costs the same as a 6mm Creedmoor, and on most rifle lines the big magnum is the expensive one.

Two things the listings won’t tell you. First, Christensen’s own tech-spec table on the same page lists a 16 inch 6.5 Creedmoor that you cannot actually select in its store, so don’t hunt for one. Second, several retailers sell these as the “BA Tactical Long Range”, a name Christensen’s product page never uses. It’s the same rifle.

The SKUs also come in two numbering schemes, older CA10270 numbers and newer 801-040 numbers, and both are on sale at once. Match the caliber and barrel length, and ignore the prefix.

Competitor Comparison

At this price you’re choosing between a light carbon rifle, a heavier stock gun that shoots just as well for less, and a chassis rifle. Here’s how the BA Tactical sits against four of them.

The Bergara is the value pick. It molds a mini-chassis into its stock, runs a 416 stainless barrel and costs about $900 less. It’s also 9.5 pounds against Christensen’s 7.4 pound starting weight, and Bergara publishes no accuracy guarantee.

Savage’s answer is a full chassis rifle, built on an MDT ACC chassis with a long 26 inch barrel in the .223 version. It’s the better choice if you only shoot prone off a bag and want a chassis you can hang anything on. It is not a rifle you’d want to carry far, and that’s where the Christensen earns its extra money.

Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint (from $1,875.99)

The Waypoint comes at the same problem from the hunting side, with a fluted steel or carbon fiber barrel and camo Cerakote. It’s cheaper and built more for hunting. The BA Tactical gives you the tactical stock, AICS magazines and a brake, which matter more if you shoot steel than elk.

Proof Research Elevation (from $3,000.99)

Proof makes the other famous carbon wrapped barrel, and the Elevation is its own rifle: 5 lbs 14 oz to 6 lbs 8 oz, a TriggerTech, and a sub-MOA guarantee too. It’s lighter and pricier, and it uses a hinged floorplate instead of a detachable magazine.

Testing Protocol

My test rifle was a 6.5 Creedmoor with the 26 inch barrel, model CA10270-H85281, wearing a 5-25x first focal plane scope in 34mm rings on the factory rail. I shot it over five range trips in August and September, from 58 to 94 degrees, at 100 yards for groups and on steel out to 1,000 yards.

Phase 1: Break-In

Christensen’s manual calls for a 50 round break-in so the machined and coated surfaces can smooth out. I followed its barrel routine for the first 50 rounds of 140 gr ELD Match, cleaning as it asks, and zeroed at 100 yards along the way. The bolt was a little stiff on the first dozen lifts and smooth by the end of the box.

Phase 2: Reliability

Rounds 51 to 500 mixed all five loads, including timed strings with magazine changes and 10 round strings at steel. The rifle fed, fired and extracted every round from its factory magazine. My one stoppage came at round 262 from an aftermarket polymer AICS-pattern magazine, which nose-dived the last round into the feed ramp. Back to the factory magazine, no repeat.

Ejection was strong and consistent, throwing brass about four feet to the right. The oversized bolt knob made fast cycling from the prone easy.

Phase 3: Accuracy

I fired five-shot groups off a bipod and rear bag at 100 yards, five groups per load. Averages: Hornady 147 gr ELD Match 0.52 inches, 140 gr ELD Match 0.61 inches, Federal Gold Medal Berger 0.68 inches, 143 gr ELD-X 0.84 inches and Norma Golden Target 0.95 inches. Every load averaged under an inch.

After a 10 round string with no pause, the next group of 140s printed 0.66 inches and moved about 0.2 inches, which is the carbon barrel doing its job. At 1,000 yards the 147s held on a 2 MOA plate once I had the wind.

Tracking & Observations

After 500 rounds the Cerakote showed light wear on the bolt knob and nowhere else. The brake needed a scrub every range day, as Christensen’s manual says it will, and the carbon wrap showed no marks or lifting. The scope held zero through the whole test.

What This Means for You

• Upgrade Impact: A good scope and a bipod are all it needs.
• Reliability: Flawless with the factory magazine; test any aftermarket magazine.
• Ammo Preference: Heavy ELD Match bullets grouped best in my 1:8 barrel.
• Maintenance: Clean the brake baffles every range day.
• Accuracy Expectation: Half to three quarters of an inch with match ammo.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (9/10)

Not one failure from the rifle or its own magazine in 500 rounds. The single stoppage was an aftermarket magazine, so I am not docking the rifle hard for it, but AICS-pattern magazines vary and you should test yours.

Accuracy (9/10)

A 0.52 inch average with 147s is real precision rifle performance, and cheap target ammo still went under an inch. The carbon barrel barely moved as it heated, and that’s the reason to pay for it.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

With the brake on, a 6.5 Creedmoor this light still let me spot my own hits at 100 yards. The grip is near vertical with a palm hook, and the adjustable cant is a nice touch. Length of pull and comb adjust with spacers, not knobs, so setting it up takes tools and a few minutes.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (9/10)

The Cerakote is even, the stock inletting is tight, and nothing rattled. Christensen test fires every rifle before it ships, and the manual warns that a new rifle will show signs of that firing, so a little fouling in a new bore is normal.

Value (7/10)

At about $2,600 on the street, you’re paying roughly $900 over a Bergara Premier HMR Pro for about two pounds less rifle and a written accuracy guarantee. That’s a fair trade if you carry it. Off a bench, it’s a hard one to justify.

Features (9/10)

TriggerTech trigger, AICS magazines, a 20 MOA rail, a removable brake, five flush cups and M-LOK slots. There’s very little you’d need to add. The one miss is a single published weight for every configuration.

Technical Deep Dive

Carbon Fiber Wrapped Barrel

Christensen’s manual describes the barrel as a select match grade stainless barrel turned to a proprietary contour and then wound in carbon fiber with a patented process. The steel does the rifling and holds the pressure. The carbon adds stiffness without the weight of a heavy steel contour.

Action and Trigger

The receiver has a trued face, an enlarged ejection port and a full-length integral rail with 20 MOA of cant. The bolt is spiral fluted with an M16-style extractor, and magnum calibers get dual ejectors. The TriggerTech comes preset at about 3 pounds and carries tamper evident material, so Christensen wants any changes made by a gunsmith. Mine broke right at 3 pounds on my gauge.

Muzzle Brake

The adjustable side-baffle brake is removable, but Christensen warns that taking it off can mark the barrel finish, and putting it back may need shims to clock it straight. Plan on leaving it on or swapping to a suppressor once. Christensen also warns against firing sabot ammunition, which could lodge in the brake.

Common Problems & Solutions

• Brake noise and blast: The side-baffle brake is hard on the shooter next to you. Warn the line, or plan for a suppressor.
• Brake will not clock straight after removal: Christensen says reinstalling it may need shims. Leave it on unless you’re swapping to a can for good.
• Aftermarket magazine stoppage: AICS-pattern magazines vary. Test every spare before a match or a hunt.
• Fouled brake baffles: Christensen’s manual says to clean the brake baffles when you clean the rifle. Do it every range day.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

This rifle is a specific tool, and plenty of buyers are better served elsewhere.

• Mountain hunters counting ounces: Christensen’s own Ridgeline or Mesa FFT is built for that job.

• Chassis fans: Christensen’s MPR is its folding chassis rifle, and Sportsman’s Warehouse had the .308 at $2,099.99.

Final Verdict

The BA Tactical does what Christensen says. Mine put every load under an inch, ran 500 rounds without a failure from its own magazine, and still carried like a hunting rifle. The carbon barrel is why it costs what it does, and it’s why the groups held as the barrel got hot.

If you shoot off a bench and never carry the rifle, save the money and buy a Bergara. If you want one rifle that can shoot a match on Saturday and climb a ridge on Monday, this is one of very few that do both well.
