This Winchester Ranger T-Series review is about the police duty load, not the Winchester Ranger .22 lever-action rifle that shares the name. I shot eight Ranger T strings in four calibers, 40 shots in all, through four layers of heavy clothing. 23 of 40 stopped inside the FBI window of 12 to 18 inches.

The 9mm 147 gr opened to 0.74 inches, the widest 9mm load we shot, and the .45 Auto 230 gr opened to 1.00, the widest .45. The 9mm +P loads, the .380 and the .40 165 gr ran deep. Below you get every shot, Winchester’s chart and live prices.

Winchester’s figures come from each law enforcement product page and its product data. The test barrel column shows a length only where Winchester’s own archived law enforcement catalog printed one. Our gel column is depth, average expansion and how many of five shots landed between 12 and 18 inches.

Winchester Ammunition makes the line, and the RA9TA box back reads “Made in U.S.A. Olin Corp.” over an East Alton, Illinois address.

We shot four calibers: 9mm, .380, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. We did not shoot the .357 Sig, so that row carries Winchester’s numbers only. Winchester lists no 10mm or plain 124 gr 9mm in the line today.

Pros

  • Widest 9mm and .45 in our tests
  • Both .45 loads: 10 of 10 in
  • Nickel cases, 50-round boxes

Cons

  • 9mm +P and .40 165 ran deep
  • .380 averaged 0.37 in wide
  • Sold mostly through police dealers

Our Rating: 7.0/10

How the Ranger T Bullet Works

Ranger T is a jacketed hollow point with what Winchester calls a reverse taper jacket. Winchester says the jacket adds strength in barriers and the bullet opens into six segments, the petals you see on recovered bullets.

Winchester's RA9TA box panel with its Ranger T-Series cutaway: Reverse Taper Jacket Technology, nickel plated shellcase and six segment expansion
Winchester’s own box panel for the RA9TA, cropped from its product image: reverse taper jacket, nickel plated case, six-segment expansion and a ballistics table of 1,250, 1,236 and 1,183 fps. Source: Winchester LE.

Winchester’s line page describes a “patented, segment engineered design” and calls Ranger T “the trusted duty load law enforcement agencies across America.” The box panel adds two lines: the jacket “increases strength for enhanced performance in multiple barriers” and the bullet gives “Unique six-segment expansion increases diameter” for more stopping power, in Winchester’s words.

All nine Ranger T box panels list a nickel plated case. Winchester’s box says the plating gives “Smooth functioning for improved reliability in demanding situations.” Nickel also makes the round easy to tell from brass range ammo at a glance.

One oddity on Winchester’s own box art: the .45 Auto 230 gr panel says “Unique eight-segment expansion,” while the other eight say six. Our .45 bullets were not photographed, so we can’t say which count the bullet really gives.

Is Ranger T bonded?

No, and Winchester sells its bonded bullets as separate lines. Ranger Bonded uses a “proprietary core/jacket bonding process.” Winchester’s page for its civilian Defender line says the process “welds the jacket to the lead core” and adds a “notched jacket.” Winchester never calls Ranger T bonded.

Is Ranger T the Black Talon?

Winchester’s current Ranger T pages never mention Black Talon, so we won’t draw that line for you. Its archive does show the bullet’s history. In 2001 Winchester’s law enforcement catalog sold a Ranger SXT 9mm +P+ 127 gr at 1,250 fps with a “Reverse Taper Jacket Design.”

By May 2004 the same catalog listed eight Ranger T-Series loads, a 9mm +P+ 127 gr among them, and its Ranger T pages used the same “Reverse Taper Jacket Design” line. The 9mm +P+ 127 gr is still rated at 1,250 fps today as the RA9TA.

Can Civilians Buy Ranger T? Law Enforcement vs Retail

Yes, where hollow points are legal to buy, but Winchester sells Ranger T as law enforcement ammunition through police distributors, so retail stock is thin. Every box says LAW ENFORCEMENT AMMUNITION and holds 50 rounds.

Winchester’s law enforcement site sends buyers to its distributor list, with one line: “Please contact your local distributor for law enforcement ammunition sales” inquiries. Some of those dealers also sell to the public, which is how Ranger T reaches gun stores and online shops.

Winchester Ranger vs Ranger T

Ranger is Winchester’s law enforcement family name, and Ranger T-Series is one brand inside it. The law enforcement handgun list splits handgun loads into Ranger, with 11 items, Ranger Bonded with 8, Ranger One with 3 and Ranger T-Series with 9. A box marked Ranger alone is a plain hollow point, full metal jacket or frangible load, not the T-Series bullet.

The box warning on the +P+ load goes further and reads “law enforcement agencies only.” The .45 +P is a standard SAAMI +P load. State and local hollow point rules still apply where you live.

On the day we published, our card searches found one clean retail listing for the whole line, a 9mm 147 gr box. One .40 180 gr listing was priced like range ammo, about a third of what Gold Dot 180 gr cost per round, so we left it off as a likely stale price. Police trade-in boxes are also for sale; we leave those off because their storage history is unknown.

How We Tested for This Winchester Ranger T-Series Review

For this Winchester Ranger T-Series review I shot each tested load into gel through four layers of heavy clothing at 10 feet, five shots per load, from four compact carry guns. The FBI window is 12 to 18 inches.

Diagram of our heavy clothing gel test, four fabric layers at 10 ft and the 12 to 18 inch window, beside Winchester's six barrier test
Four fabric layers, 10 ft, gel blocks end to end, five shots per load, beside the six events on Winchester’s chart. Source: our test protocol and Winchester’s barrier chart.

The guns: a S&W M&P9c 3.5 in for 9mm, a Glock 42 3.25 in for .380, a Glock 27 3.42 in for .40 and a Kahr CW45 3.64 in for .45. The clothing stack is a cotton T-shirt, a cotton shirt, fleece and denim, and a chronograph read muzzle velocity for every string. I recorded depth for every shot and the average expanded width for each string.

Our blocks hold 32 inches of gel, so a shot that reached the end shows as 32.0 in the tables. One Ranger T shot did that, from the .40 165 gr; five rival shots in the .45 table did too. Winchester tests its own way, in its lab, through six barriers with “calibrated ballistic gelatin,” and we print both sets below.

Winchester Ranger T 9mm: 147 gr, 124 gr +P and 127 gr +P+

Winchester Ranger T 9mm 147 gr is the pick of the three. It averaged 16.46 inches with three of five in the window and opened to 0.74 inches. Both +P loads averaged past 21 inches.

All 9mm strings came from our S&W M&P9c 3.5 in. Of the thirteen 9mm loads in this table, the Ranger T 147 gr opened the widest at 0.74 inches, ahead of Federal HST 147 gr at 0.61. Two of its shots ran past 18 inches, at 18.3 and 19.5.

From a 3.5 inch barrel the 9mm +P loads ran deep. The 124 gr +P averaged 22.24 inches, with one shot in the window and one at 27.3. The 127 gr +P+ averaged 21.22, with two of five in and its deepest shot at 28.1.

Ranger T-Series 9mm Luger +P 124 gr, symbol RA9124TP, rated 1,180 fps. Composite on a Winchester product image, via Winchester LE.

Winchester rates the 147 gr at 990 fps from a 4 inch test barrel, per its archived catalog, and we read 941 fps from 3.5 inches. That is well below the speed of sound, so the 147 gr is a subsonic 9mm load. The 124 gr +P is rated at 1,180 fps and read 1,153 from our gun.

124 gr +P, 127 gr +P+ or 147 gr?

Carry the 147 gr. From our compact it was the only Ranger T 9mm load with more than two shots in the window, and it opened widest. The two hot loads went deeper than the FBI window on average from our gun, and Winchester’s own chart has them at 13.20 and 14.40 inches through heavy cloth from its lab.

What +P+ Means on a Ranger T Box

+P+ is not a SAAMI pressure standard. SAAMI publishes 9mm Luger and 9mm Luger +P standards and nothing above them, so +P+ has no published limit. Winchester’s RA9TA box warns it runs 20 to 25 percent above industry standard.

Winchester Ranger T-Series RA9TA 9mm Luger +P+ 127 grain box on a brushed steel shop shelf
Ranger T-Series 9mm Luger +P+ 127 gr, symbol RA9TA, rated 1,250 fps and 441 ft-lb. Composite on a Winchester product image, via Winchester LE.

In SAAMI’s Z299.3 pistol standard, SAAMI lists a maximum average pressure of 35,000 psi for 9mm Luger and 38,500 psi for 9mm Luger +P. The RA9TA box warning says its cartridges “are loaded to higher pressures for greater velocity” and that “average pressure is 20% to 25% higher than industry standard” pressure.

The same warning says the load is for “law enforcement agencies only.” Read your gun’s manual before you buy a box. From our 3.5 inch pistol the +P+ load did not buy depth control: it averaged 21.22 inches.

The .45 Auto +P and 9mm 124 gr +P are different. Both sit inside SAAMI’s published +P standards, which is a pressure level your gun’s maker can approve or not.

Winchester Ranger T 380: 95 gr

Winchester Ranger T .380 95 gr ran deep and stayed narrow. From our Glock 42 it averaged 21.90 inches and 0.37 inches wide, and none of the five shots stopped in the window. Every shot went past 18 inches.

Winchester’s own chart has the .380 far shallower through heavy cloth: 7.85 inches at 0.64 inches wide. That is the biggest gap between its lab and our gun anywhere in this review, and it is covered below. For a .380 pocket gun our data points to Critical Defense; our best .380 ammo guide has the full field.

Of the nine .45 loads in this table, the two Ranger T loads opened widest. Federal HST 230 gr came next at 0.85 inches, and it also kept five of five in. Both Winchester relatives in the table, PDX1 230 gr and Ranger Bonded 230 gr, ran deeper with fewer shots in.

Winchester rates the 230 gr at 935 fps from a 5 inch test barrel and the +P at 990 fps. From our 3.64 inch Kahr they read 900 and 904 fps, so the +P bought only 4 fps and no extra depth. In a compact .45 the standard 230 gr does the same job.

Ranger T 357 Sig: Winchester Numbers

Winchester Ranger T 357 Sig 125 gr is rated at 1,350 fps and 506 ft-lb from a 4 inch test barrel. We did not gel test it, so this section carries only Winchester’s numbers.

Ranger T-Series .357 Sig 125 gr, symbol RA357SIGT, rated 1,350 fps and 506 ft-lb from a 4 in test barrel. Composite on a Winchester product image, via Winchester LE.

Winchester’s barrier chart has the RA357SIGT at 14.00 inches through heavy cloth and 12.30 inches through bare gel. Like eight of the nine loads on the chart, it ran deepest through steel, at 21.50 inches.

Winchester’s Own Barrier Numbers

Winchester’s own barrier chart puts 30 of 54 Ranger T results between 12 and 18 inches across six barriers, and 46 of 54 kept 90 percent or more of their weight. That is Winchester’s lab data, not ours.

30 of 54 results landed between 12 and 18 in across Winchester’s six barriers for all nine loads. Source: Winchester’s Bullet Barrier Testing Chart.

The chart lists penetration, expansion and weight kept through bare gel, heavy cloth, wallboard, plywood, steel and auto glass for all nine loads. Steel ran deep: seven of the nine steel results went past 18 inches. Auto glass took the most weight, with seven of the eight results under 90 percent coming through glass.

The one result under 90 percent outside auto glass is the .380 through bare gel, at 86 percent. The .380 also stopped at 7.65 inches through bare gel and 7.85 through heavy cloth, short of the window, and Winchester printed no expansion figure for it through glass.

Winchester’s six recovered RA9T bullets, bare gelatin 13.90 in; heavy cloth 14.00 in; wallboard 15.00 in; plywood 14.80 in; steel 17.00 in; auto glass 10.80 in. Winchester says the bullets are not to scale. Source: Winchester’s barrier chart.

Read the photos with Winchester’s footnote in mind: “Expanded bullets shown are NOT TO SCALE.” It also says velocity came from test barrels and the data came from SAAMI test equipment and calibrated gelatin, without naming the gun or the shot count. Read the chart on Winchester’s Performance Testing page.

Why Our Gel Ran Deeper Than Winchester’s

Our strings ran 1.84 to 14.05 inches deeper than Winchester’s heavy cloth figure, on eight of eight loads we shot. We shot the same loads; the guns and the gel differ.

Paired bars comparing Winchester's heavy cloth depth and width for each Ranger T load against our eight gel strings
Our strings ran 1.84 to 14.05 in deeper than Winchester’s heavy cloth figure for the same load, on eight of eight loads. Source: Winchester’s barrier chart and our gel test.

Winchester shoots calibrated ballistic gelatin and lists velocity from test barrels. We shot compact carry guns into clear synthetic gel. Six of our eight strings opened narrower than Winchester’s heavy cloth figures; only the 9mm 147 gr and the .45 +P opened wider.

The biggest gap is the .380 Auto 95 gr: Winchester 7.85 inches, ours 21.90. The closest is the .45 Auto 230 gr +P, where Winchester has 12.70 and we got 14.54. Treat Winchester’s chart as a barrier comparison between its own loads, and our gel as what a compact gun does. Weight retention is Winchester’s figure only; we did not weigh our bullets.

Barrel Length and Velocity

Every Ranger T load we shot ran slower than Winchester’s rating, 27 to 86 fps slow, 54 fps on average. Our guns had 3.25 to 3.64 inch barrels; Winchester’s test barrels run 4 to 5 inches where it prints them.

Chart of Winchester's rated velocity against our measured velocity for eight Ranger T loads from carry guns
Eight of 8 loads ran under Winchester’s rating, 27 to 86 fps slow, 54 fps on average. Source: winchesterle.com and our chronograph.

The .45 Auto 230 gr +P lost the most, 86 fps, and the 9mm 124 gr +P the least, 27 fps. A load rated from a 4 or 5 inch test barrel will read slower from a compact, so expect numbers like ours from a carry gun.

Ranger T vs HST, Gold Dot and Critical Duty

From the same guns, Ranger T opened wider than Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot and Hornady Critical Duty in 9mm and .45, and kept as many shots in the window or more in .40 and .45.

In 9mm, HST 147 gr ran shallower at 15.24 inches with four of five in, against three for Ranger T, while Ranger T opened 0.14 inches wider. Our Federal HST review and HST vs Gold Dot test cover HST against Gold Dot from the same guns.

Speer Gold Dot 180 gr matched Ranger T in .40 with five of five, and ran a little shallower. Our Speer Gold Dot review has the rest of its data. Hornady Critical Duty ran deeper than the Ranger T loads in this table; our Hornady Critical Duty review explains why it suits full-size guns.

For short carry guns, Hornady Critical Defense went shallower than Ranger T in 9mm and .380, and deeper in .45. Our Hornady Critical Defense review covers it.

Ranger T vs PDX1 Defender and Ranger Bonded

PDX1 Defender and Ranger Bonded are bonded bullets, and Ranger T is not. From the same guns Ranger T went shallower and opened wider than both Winchester relatives in 9mm 147 gr and .45 230 gr.

In 9mm, PDX1 147 gr and Ranger Bonded 147 gr both missed the window with all five shots, at 20.60 and 21.48 inches. In .45, PDX1 put three in and Ranger Bonded one, against five for Ranger T. Our Winchester brand page covers Winchester’s retail lines.

The .40 165 gr flips it. PDX1 165 gr and Ranger Bonded 165 gr kept all five in at 14.60 and 14.74 inches, while Ranger T 165 gr put two in. In the .380, PDX1 95 gr stopped at 9.50 inches and Ranger T went 21.90.

Winchester itself does not tie Defender to Ranger T on its pages, so we price neither as a stand-in for the other. Our Federal vs Winchester page compares the two makers.

Our Winchester PDX1 Defender review charts all ten PDX1 Defender strings from the same guns, plus the 12 gauge and .410 loads.

Which Ranger T Load for Which Carry Gun

Pick the Ranger T load by caliber and barrel. From our compacts, the 9mm 147 gr, .40 180 gr and .45 230 gr behaved best, and the 9mm +P loads, .40 165 gr and .380 ran deep.

Known Problems

Ranger T has five drawbacks: deep 9mm +P loads, a .380 that barely opened, a .40 165 gr that ran past the gel, thin retail stock and a +P+ load above any SAAMI pressure standard.

  • Deep 9mm +P loads. The 124 gr +P averaged 22.24 inches and the 127 gr +P+ 21.22 from our 3.5 inch gun.
  • The .380. All five shots went past 18 inches at 0.37 inches wide.
  • The .40 165 gr. One shot reached the end of our 32 inches of gel; two of five landed in the window.
  • Trade-in boxes. Police trade-in Ranger T is common at retail. Storage and handling are unknown, so we leave it off our cards.
  • +P+ in your gun. The RA9TA box warns it runs 20 to 25 percent over industry standard pressure. Check your owner’s manual first.

Who Should NOT Buy Winchester Ranger T

Ranger T is a police duty line that opened wide in our tests, but four of the eight loads we shot ran deep and retail stock is thin. Look elsewhere if one of these four buyers is you.

  • A .380 pocket gun carrier. Ranger T 95 gr went 21.90 inches with none in the window. Buy Hornady Critical Defense 90 gr, all five in at 13.24.
  • A compact 9mm owner who wants +P. The 124 gr +P and 127 gr +P+ averaged past 21 inches from our 3.5 inch gun. Buy the Ranger T 147 gr or Federal HST 147 gr, four of five in at 15.24.
  • A buyer who wants a box this week. Retail stock is thin. Buy Speer Gold Dot, which our cards found at several stores.
  • A .40 165 gr shooter. It put two of five in with one shot through 32 inches. Buy the Ranger T 180 gr or Speer Gold Dot 180 gr.

Price and Where to Buy

Ranger T sells in 50-round boxes. On our October 15 cards the 50-round 9mm 147 gr box cost about half as much per round as 20-round boxes of Federal HST 147 gr or Speer Gold Dot 147 gr.

The live cards in each caliber section carry today’s price per round. Only the 9mm 147 gr had a clean retail listing when we published; the rest of the line sells through Winchester’s police distributors. Buy enough to run a few boxes through your own gun before you carry it.

For more self-defense picks across brands, see our best defensive ammo guide, best 9mm ammo and best concealed carry ammo. This Winchester Ranger T review uses the same test as all of them.

Winchester Ranger T-Series Review: The Verdict

Winchester Ranger T is a strong duty line: the 9mm 147 gr and both .45 loads opened widest in their calibers in our tests. Skip the 9mm +P loads in a compact, the .40 165 gr and the .380.

In this Winchester Ranger T review, the load you pick matters more than the line. From a compact 9mm carry the 147 gr; from a .40 carry the 180 gr; from a .45 carry the 230 gr and save the +P money. Winchester’s own chart backs the line through barriers, with 30 of 54 results in the window.

Our rating is 7.0 out of 10. It earns its points on expansion, Winchester’s barrier data and the build, and loses them on the deep 9mm +P, .40 165 gr and .380 loads and on how hard it is to buy. Our Winchester brand page covers the rest of Winchester’s lineup.

Winchester Ranger T-Series FAQ

Short answers, from our gel data and Winchester’s own pages.

Is Winchester Ranger T good for self-defense?

Yes in 9mm 147 gr, .40 180 gr and .45 Auto. From our carry guns the 147 gr opened to 0.74 inches, the .40 180 gr kept five of five in and the .45 kept all 10 shots in the window. The 9mm +P loads, the .40 165 gr and the .380 ran deep.

Can civilians buy Ranger T ammo?

Where hollow points are legal to buy, yes. Winchester sells Ranger T as law enforcement ammunition through police distributors, and some of them sell to the public. The 9mm +P+ box itself says law enforcement agencies only. Local hollow point laws still apply.

Is Ranger T better than Federal HST?

Ranger T opened wider in 9mm 147 gr and .45 230 gr from the same guns. HST 147 gr put more 9mm shots in the window, four of five against three. In .40, Ranger T 180 gr put five of five in against two for HST 180 gr. See our Federal HST review.

What is the difference between Ranger T and PDX1 Defender?

Winchester's civilian Defender line, the PDX1 rows in our gel tables, is a bonded bullet with a notched jacket. Ranger T is a reverse taper jacket hollow point sold for law enforcement. In our 9mm 147 gr test Ranger T put three of five in the window and PDX1 none.

Is Ranger T the same as Black Talon?

Winchester's pages do not say so. Its archived law enforcement catalog shows a Ranger SXT 9mm +P+ 127 gr with a reverse taper jacket in 2001, and a 9mm +P+ 127 gr Ranger T-Series load in the same catalog by 2004.

What does +P+ mean and is it safe?

SAAMI publishes standards for 9mm and 9mm +P only, so +P+ has no published limit. Winchester's RA9TA box says its average pressure runs 20 to 25 percent over industry standard. Use it only if your gun's maker approves it.

Should I carry 124 gr +P, 127 gr +P+ or 147 gr Ranger T?

The 147 gr, from a compact. It averaged 16.46 inches with three of five in the window. The 124 gr +P averaged 22.24 inches and the 127 gr +P+ 21.22 from our 3.5 inch gun.

Is Winchester Ranger T bonded?

No. Winchester sells its bonded bullets as Ranger Bonded and Defender. Ranger T uses a reverse taper jacket that opens into six segments, in Winchester's words.

Why does Ranger T come in 50-round boxes?

It is packed as law enforcement ammunition, 50 rounds to the box and 500 to the case. On our cards the 9mm 147 gr cost about half as much per round as 20-round HST or Gold Dot boxes.

Is Ranger T 147 gr subsonic?

Yes. Winchester rates it at 990 fps from a 4 inch barrel, and it read 941 fps from our 3.5 inch gun, both well under the speed of sound.
