Bergara Warns Against Federal 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak Ammo

Last updated October 2026 · By Nick Hall, tracks rifle and ammunition safety notices for USA Gun Shop, from SAAMI pressure tables to maker bulletins

Quick take: Bergara has told owners not to shoot Federal’s 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak in any Bergara rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. It’s a safety and compatibility notice, not a recall, and it puts Bergara on the opposite side of the line from Federal’s pitch that +Peak runs in the 6.5 Creedmoor you already own.

  • What changed: A Bergara notice dated October 29, 2026 says +Peak is “NOT approved for use in any Bergara rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor.”
  • Why it matters: Bergara puts +Peak at about 80,000 psi, against a SAAMI 6.5 Creedmoor limit of 62,000 psi.
  • Affects: Every Bergara 6.5 Creedmoor owner with +Peak on hand, plus the dealers who sell both brands.
  • What’s next: SAAMI is still working on Peak Alloy-type cases, and Bergara says it will issue a formal statement if a model is ever approved.

Most ammo compatibility fights stay in forum threads (Is it safe in my AR-10? Will it void the warranty?) or in the fine print of an owner’s manual. This one is different. A major rifle maker has put its name on a flat no, and we pulled the notice, Federal’s page and SAAMI’s own standard so you don’t have to.

What Bergara’s +Peak Safety Notice Actually Says

Bergara posted its safety notice under the title “IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: High Pressure & Non-Standard Ammunition Compatibility,” dated October 29, 2026. It names one cartridge as the example: Federal Premium 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak.

The core rule is broader than +Peak. Ammo loaded outside SAAMI pressure standards for its caliber “should not be used in any Bergara rifle unless Bergara formally confirms compatibility for that model.”

The FAQ under the notice gets specific. Asked whether you can shoot +Peak in your rifle, Bergara answers: “No. This ammunition is NOT approved for use in any Bergara rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor.” That covers the whole range, from a $1,169 MSRP Bergara B-14 HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor to a $1,799 Premier HMR Pro.

Dealers get their own line. Bergara asks dealers and distributors to share the notice at the point of sale and to “refrain from representing any Bergara rifle as compatible with Federal +Peak ammunition until further notice.”

The 62,000 vs 80,000 PSI Math Behind the Notice

Bergara’s FAQ says +Peak runs at approximately 80,000 psi, compared with a SAAMI 6.5 Creedmoor rating of 62,000 psi. Bergara’s own pressure chart, linked from the notice, lists the same 62,000 psi for 6.5 Creedmoor.

Federal uses a different baseline. Its +Peak FAQ says the round is loaded to 80,000 psi “opposed to 6.5 Creedmoor’s standard 65,000 psi,” and its June launch release compares 80,000 psi with 65,000 psi in brass cases.

So we checked the standard itself. SAAMI’s centerfire rifle standard, Z299.4, lists a maximum average pressure of 62,000 psi for 6.5 Creedmoor, and 65,000 psi is the figure it gives 6.5 PRC. Bergara has the SAAMI number right, which puts +Peak about 18,000 psi, or roughly 29%, over the 6.5 Creedmoor limit.

The same SAAMI table carries a footnote worth reading twice: “WARNING: Maximum Average Pressure levels greater than 65,000 psi may present increased risk of unsafe cartridge case or firearm rupture.” Federal’s answer is the case. It says the patented Peak Alloy steel case lets it raise chamber pressure “far beyond” brass, and it claims 300 fps over standard 6.5 Creedmoor.

Federal’s Side of the +Peak Story

When Federal announced +Peak on June 5, 2026, the release said it “is compatible with existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles.” Chairman and CEO Jason Vanderbrink put it plainly: “The best part of the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is that hunters and target shooters are likely to already own a rifle that can shoot it.” Our Federal 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak launch coverage walks through the case and the five loads.

Federal’s releases dated October 14 and October 22 repeat the “compatible with existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles” line. But the visible FAQ on Federal’s +Peak page is more careful now: “Our testing has shown 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak operates in a variety of 6.5 Creedmoor firearm platforms. Refer to your rifle manufacturer for recommendations on compatibility with high-pressure ammunition.”

The same FAQ already rules out one group, saying +Peak “is not compatible for use in any break-action CVA rifle such as the Scout, Hunter and Apex models.” AR-10 owners get the same refer-to-your-maker answer.

Federal’s partner strip, headed “developed and tested in conjunction with the following companies,” now shows Christensen, Weatherby, Seekins, Geissele, Nemo Arms, Proof Research, Hill Country Rifles, Short Action Customs, Springfield Armory, Area 419 and Forster Products. Bergara isn’t among them.

The page source still holds a Bergara logo and an FAQ answer reading “Yes, Federal’s 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is compatible with 6.5 Creedmoor rifles from Bergara,” both wrapped in HTML comments, so neither displays on the page.

Where SAAMI Stands on Peak Alloy

SAAMI published a statement on June 17, 2026, and it reads like a referee declining to call the play. At Federal’s request it set up a working group to look at pressure, testing and interchangeability standards for this case technology.

Until that work is done, SAAMI “takes no position at this time regarding the interchangeability, compatibility, or safety of the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak cartridge in firearms chambered for 6.5 Creedmoor.” It also says “Firearm and suppressor manufacturers remain the best source of information regarding the suitability of ammunition for use in their products.”

And that last line is exactly what Bergara just did. Both companies sit inside SAAMI, with Federal a founding member and Bergara USA listed among the supporting and affiliate members in the Z299.4 front matter, so this is an argument between two members over a cartridge the standards body hasn’t ruled on.

What the Bergara Notice Does Not Do

It is not a recall. Bergara isn’t asking for rifles back, offers no repair program and reports no damaged guns or injuries anywhere in the notice.

It doesn’t touch standard ammo either. Bergara’s advice is to use “only ammunition loaded to standard 6.5 Creedmoor SAAMI or CIP pressure specifications,” which covers the regular brass-case 6.5 Creedmoor loads you already shoot.

It names one cartridge. 6.5 Creedmoor is the only +Peak chambering Federal sells so far, and the notice doesn’t mention 7mm Backcountry by name, though its general rule covers any ammo outside SAAMI pressure standards for its caliber.

And it isn’t permanent by its own terms. Bergara says it will watch SAAMI’s process, run its own evaluation and, “If and when a specific model is confirmed compatible, we will issue a formal statement.”

What a Bergara Owner With +Peak Should Do

Stop shooting it in the Bergara. Set the boxes aside and run standard 6.5 Creedmoor until Bergara says otherwise, and if you shoot more than one 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, check that maker’s guidance before the +Peak goes in its chamber.

Sort your loose rounds carefully. SAAMI says +Peak cases carry the same 6.5 CM headstamp as regular ammo “with the addition of two Peak logos,” so a mixed range bag is a real risk.

Finding more is hard right now anyway. All five +Peak loads on Federal’s own store, priced $57.99 to $73.99 for 20 rounds, show Currently Unavailable. If you want a rifle that runs regular 6.5 Creedmoor hard, our best 6.5 Creedmoor rifles roundup covers the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shoot Federal 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak in a Bergara rifle?

No. Bergara's safety notice dated October 29, 2026 says +Peak is not approved for use in any Bergara rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. Bergara recommends standard 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition loaded to SAAMI or CIP pressure specifications.

Is the Bergara +Peak notice a recall?

No. It is a safety and ammunition compatibility notice. Bergara is not asking for rifles back and the notice describes no repair program. It tells owners which ammunition not to use and asks dealers not to describe Bergara rifles as +Peak-compatible until further notice.

What pressure does 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak run at?

Federal and Bergara both put it at about 80,000 psi. SAAMI's Z299.4 centerfire rifle standard lists a maximum average pressure of 62,000 psi for standard 6.5 Creedmoor. Federal's own page describes the standard as 65,000 psi, which is the SAAMI figure for 6.5 PRC.

What does SAAMI say about 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak?

In a June 17, 2026 statement SAAMI said it takes no position at this time on the interchangeability, compatibility or safety of +Peak in rifles chambered for 6.5 Creedmoor. It set up a working group at Federal's request and said firearm makers remain the best source on which ammunition suits their guns.

Does Federal say +Peak works in any 6.5 Creedmoor rifle?

Federal's launch release said it is compatible with existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles. Its +Peak FAQ now tells shooters to refer to their rifle manufacturer on compatibility with high-pressure ammunition, and it says +Peak is not compatible with CVA break-action rifles such as the Scout, Hunter and Apex.

How can I tell +Peak ammo from regular 6.5 Creedmoor?

SAAMI says +Peak cases carry the same 6.5 CM headstamp as conventional 6.5 Creedmoor, with two Peak logos added. The cases are a nickel-plated Peak Alloy steel rather than brass, and the boxes are marked 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak with Peak Alloy Case Technology.

Will Bergara ever approve +Peak?

Possibly. Bergara says it will monitor SAAMI's standards process and run its own evaluation, and if a specific model is confirmed compatible it will issue a formal statement. Until then the answer for every Bergara 6.5 Creedmoor rifle is no.

Who do I contact at Bergara about ammunition compatibility?
