The fact that you can get a fully functional Glock 19 clone for $299 is borderline offensive to every other manufacturer charging twice that. The PSA Dagger takes Glock 19 magazines, fits Glock 19 holsters, and accepts most Glock 19 aftermarket parts. It’s not a “budget alternative.” It’s the same thing for less money.

I’ve put over 1,000 rounds through my Dagger and it’s been completely reliable since the break-in period. The trigger isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s perfectly serviceable. The real story here is that PSA has made the Glock 19 platform accessible to everyone. If you’re looking for a low cost gun that doesn’t compromise on function, this is where you start.

PSA keeps releasing new variants too: threaded barrels, optics cuts, different frame textures. The ecosystem around this gun is growing fast. For a first handgun, a nightstand gun, or just because you want a Glock without paying the Glock tax, the Dagger is a no-brainer.

Best For: Anyone who wants Glock 19 functionality at a price that almost feels like cheating.

Taurus turned a corner. I know, I know. Five years ago, saying “buy a Taurus” would get you laughed out of the room. But the G3C is legitimately good. Not “good for the money.” Actually good. It ships with three 12-round magazines, which at this price point is practically charity.

The trigger on the G3C is better than it has any right to be at $249. Short reset, clean break, and consistent pull weight. I’ve run a couple thousand rounds through mine with exactly one malfunction (a light primer strike on cheap steel-case ammo, which I’m not even counting). For a gun that costs less than a decent pair of boots, that’s remarkable.

If you’re on a truly tight budget and need a reliable carry gun, the G3C is the answer. It’s one of the best cheap guns on the market and it makes the old Taurus haters look silly. The manual safety is a nice option for newer shooters who want that extra layer of confidence.

Best For: Budget-conscious buyers who want a reliable carry gun without spending a penny more than they have to.

Ruger doesn’t do flashy. Ruger does reliable. The Security-9 is boring in the absolute best way possible. It goes bang every single time you pull the trigger, it’s easy to take apart, and Ruger’s customer service is legendary. For a first-time gun buyer, this is probably the safest recommendation on the entire list.

The Secure Action trigger is a hammer-fired system that’s smooth and consistent, even if it won’t blow anyone’s mind. The 15+1 capacity is competitive with anything at this price point. I’ve recommended the Security-9 to at least a dozen friends and family members who were buying their first handgun, and not one of them has been disappointed.

At around $349 street price, you’re getting Ruger’s name, Ruger’s warranty, and Ruger’s track record. That peace of mind is worth something. This is one of those affordable firearms where the brand behind it adds genuine value to the purchase.

Best For: First-time handgun buyers who want a rock-solid, no-surprises pistol backed by Ruger’s excellent reputation.

The Mossberg Maverick 88 is, dollar for dollar, the most gun you can buy in America. Under $200 for a pump-action 12 gauge that runs Mossberg 500 parts and barrels. Let that sink in. You can buy this shotgun, a box of buckshot, and a home defense setup for less than the cost of a fancy dinner for two.

The only real differences between the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500 are the cross-bolt safety (instead of the tang safety) and the cheaper forend. That’s it. Same action bars. Same barrel compatibility. Same “pump it and it goes boom” reliability. I’ve owned one for years and it has never, not once, failed to cycle.

For home defense, for a truck gun, for teaching someone to shoot shotguns, or just because every American should own at least one pump shotgun: get a Maverick 88. Get one. Now. This is the cheap gun that puts a smile on our face every single time we rack the slide.

Best For: Anyone who wants maximum firepower for minimum dollars. The ultimate budget home defense gun.

A complete AR-15 for $499. Read that again. Palmetto State Armory has done more to democratize AR-15 ownership than any other company in the industry, and the PA-15 is the proof. The barrier to entry has never been lower, and the quality has never been higher at this price point.

Is it a Daniel Defense? No. Is it a BCM? No. But it’s a functional, reliable, mil-spec AR-15 that will eat whatever ammo you feed it and put rounds where you point it. I wrote a full PSA AR-15 review if you want the deep dive, but the short version is: it works, it’s cheap, and it’s endlessly upgradeable.

The beauty of buying a budget AR is that you can pour the savings into upgrades. Buy the PA-15, swap the handguard, add a decent optic, and you’ve got a rifle that competes with guns costing double. Smart money buys the affordable firearm and invests the difference in ammo and training.

Best For: First-time AR-15 buyers who want to get into the platform without a four-figure investment.

The SD9 VE is Smith & Wesson’s budget line, and it looks like a budget gun. It’s not sexy. It’s not going to turn heads at the range. But here’s the thing: it’s extremely functional, surprisingly reliable, and the trigger is better than it has any right to be at this price. S&W calls it the “Self-Defense Trigger” and it’s actually pretty decent once you get used to the pull weight.

With 16+1 capacity and S&W’s track record behind it, the SD9 VE is a self-defense pistol that punches above its weight class. You’re not paying for the name here. You’re paying for engineering that’s been proven over decades. I’ve seen these go on sale for under $300 during holiday promotions, which makes them an even more ridiculous value.

If you want a cheap gun for the nightstand and don’t care about impressing anyone at the range, the SD9 VE does the job. Simple as that. Throw on an Apex trigger kit from Brownells and you’ve got a genuinely impressive setup for under $400 total.

Best For: Buyers who want Smith & Wesson reliability for self-defense duty without the M&P price tag.

The gun every American should own. Period. The Ruger 10/22 is the best-selling .22 LR rifle in history for a reason: it’s cheap to buy, cheaper to shoot, and endlessly customizable. You can turn a bone-stock 10/22 into basically anything you want. Tacticool chassis, Appleseed target shooter, suppressor host, plinker, trainer. The aftermarket is insane.

I’ve written a full Ruger 10/22 review that goes deep on this rifle, but the short version is this: if you don’t own one, fix that. A brick of .22 LR costs less than lunch and gives you an afternoon at the range. There is no cheaper way to practice fundamentals, teach a new shooter, or just have a ridiculous amount of fun.

At around $279, the 10/22 is one of the best low cost guns you can buy. Not because it’s impressive on paper, but because the cost-per-smile ratio is unbeatable. Every round is a few cents. Every magazine is a grin. This is the gun that turns non-shooters into shooters.

Best For: Everyone. Literally everyone. First gun, tenth gun, doesn’t matter. Own a 10/22.

A hundred and twenty-nine dollars. For a functioning firearm. The Heritage Rough Rider is a cowboy gun for beer money, and it looks the absolute tits doing it. Is it a serious defensive tool? No. Is it the most fun you can have at the range for the cost of a decent steak dinner? Absolutely.

The Rough Rider is a single-action revolver, so you’re cocking the hammer for each shot. That’s part of the charm. It makes you feel like a Wild West gunslinger, except your gunfight is against tin cans and paper plates. Heritage offers these in about a million different configurations: different barrel lengths, grips, finishes, and even .22 WMR combo cylinders.

This is the gun you buy because it’s fun. Pure, stupid, grinning fun. Hand it to someone who’s never shot before and watch their face light up. At $129, there is genuinely nothing else in the firearms world that delivers this much enjoyment per dollar. It’s the cheapest gun worth buying, and everyone should own one.

Best For: Range fun, introducing new shooters, and fulfilling your cowboy fantasies on a ramen-noodle budget.

The trigger on this Turkish import embarrasses guns costing twice as much. Seriously. The Canik TP9SF has a trigger that feels like someone spent $200 on aftermarket parts, except it comes that way from the factory. Short take-up, crisp break, short reset. It’s genuinely excellent and it makes you shoot better.

Canik has been gaining a serious following in the competitive shooting world, and it’s not hard to see why. The TP9SF ships with a paddle holster, extra backstraps, and 18+1 capacity. That’s more rounds than most full-size pistols at any price point. The fit and finish is noticeably better than most budget guns too.

The only knock I hear is “it’s Turkish” and honestly, who cares? Beretta makes guns in Turkey. Walther makes guns in Turkey. The TP9SF runs, it shoots flat, and the trigger is addictive. If you care about trigger quality and don’t want to spend $600+ on a Walther PDP, this is your gun.

Best For: Shooters who prioritize trigger quality and want maximum capacity without paying premium prices.

Nobody talks about this gun and that’s criminal. Beretta owns Stoeger, and the STR-9 punches way above its weight. The ergonomics are fantastic (better than most budget pistols, honestly), the trigger is solid, and the fit and finish is noticeably better than what you’d expect at $299. This is a gun that feels like it should cost $150 more than it does.

The STR-9 benefits from Beretta’s engineering DNA without the Beretta price tag. The grip angle is natural, the controls are well-placed, and it runs reliably. I’ve been recommending this gun to people who want something different from the PSA/Taurus/Ruger trifecta, and the feedback has been unanimously positive.

The biggest downside is the aftermarket. Because nobody talks about it, nobody makes accessories for it. You’re largely stuck with what Stoeger offers. But if you just want a reliable, well-built, affordable firearm that works out of the box, the STR-9 is a sleeper pick that deserves way more attention than it gets.

Best For: Buyers who want Beretta engineering without the Beretta price, and don’t mind flying under the radar.

How to Buy Smart on a Budget

Buying a cheap gun is only half the battle. The real budget move is knowing when and where to buy. Holiday sales (Black Friday, Independence Day, Memorial Day) are when retailers slash prices the hardest. I’ve seen guns on this list drop $50-$100 during major sales at Palmetto State Armory, Guns.com, and Brownells. Patience pays off.

Police trade-ins are another gold mine. Departments cycle out duty weapons regularly, and you can pick up Glock 17s, S&W M&Ps, and SIG P226s with honest wear but plenty of life left for $300-$400. These are guns that were maintained on a schedule and have proven track records. Cosmetic wear doesn’t affect function.

Remember: the gun is only part of the cost. Budget for ammunition (at least 200 rounds for break-in and practice), a quality holster if it’s for carry, and ideally some professional training. A $250 gun with $200 in training behind it is infinitely more effective than a $600 gun with zero range time. Invest in your skills, not just your hardware.

One more tip: don’t chase the absolute lowest price at the expense of buying from a reputable dealer. Stick with established retailers, verify your FFL transfer fees ahead of time, and factor shipping into the total cost. Sometimes the “cheapest” online price ends up being more expensive than your local shop after transfer fees and shipping. Do the math before you click “buy.”

Are cheap guns reliable?

Many budget guns in 2026 are genuinely reliable. The PSA Dagger, Taurus G3C, Ruger Security-9, and Mossberg Maverick 88 all have strong reliability records. Budget guns may need a 200-round break-in period and the fit/finish will not match premium brands, but they function well.

What is the best cheap gun for home defense?

The Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge pump shotgun at $199 is the best cheap home defense gun. It uses Mossberg 500 parts, is dead reliable, and the sound of racking a pump shotgun is a deterrent in itself. For a handgun, the Ruger Security-9 at $349 is a solid choice.

The Taurus G3C at $249 is the best budget concealed carry gun. It holds 12+1 rounds of 9mm in a compact frame, has a decent trigger, and three magazines are included. The PSA Dagger Compact at $299 is also excellent if you want Glock parts compatibility.

Is it worth buying a cheap AR-15?

Yes. The PSA PA-15 at $499 is a complete, functional AR-15 with Magpul furniture and a nitride barrel. It is reliable, accurate enough for most uses, and backed by PSA lifetime warranty. You do not need to spend $1,000+ to own a good AR-15 in 2026.
