The 2026 sub-$500 market has shifted hard since we last refreshed this list. Del-Ton Inc. closed its doors in April 2025 after 25 years, knocked out by PSA and Bear Creek pricing. Ruger acquired the old Anderson Manufacturing factory in Hebron, Kentucky and just rolled out the Harrier, its first sub-$700 AR built on that line.

So start small. Then progressively talk yourself into more expensive weapons later. We’ll get you on that road right now with a semi-auto rifle for less than $500 that does the job, and we’ve added a stretch pick at the bottom for the Harrier crowd.

Palmetto State Armory is basically the KIA of the firearms world. It started out making cheap and bad rifles shortly after Jamin Macallum started selling magazines and accessories out of his garage. The AR-15 is still the heart of the line-up, but the company has expanded into Glock clones, AK47s, shotguns, and more. PSA also makes a mind-boggling amount of parts in-house, which lets it offer nitride-treated 4150V barrels and Carpenter 158 steel bolts cheaper than pretty much anybody else.

Badge snobs still hate them. They don’t care, they’ve got a massive and well-deserved following that knows these guns punch well above their price point. The ATI Alpha Maxx stands out because of its polymer upper and lower receivers. Yes, plastic. Before you panic, it’s a carbon-fiber reinforced polymer with zinc metal inserts at the common stress points like the buffer tube housing and rear takedown pins.

It’s seriously clever engineering and this is the second model, after the success of the ATI Omni Hybrid. This might not be the gun that turns into the Glock of the AR-15 world, but whoever comes next will owe it a massive debt.

Radical Firearms is a Houston, Texas based manufacturer that builds everything in-house. The RF-15 has earned a reputation as a solid budget rifle that punches above its weight class after some early issues with quality control and weak peripherals.

You get a 16 inch barrel with a free-float M-LOK handguard, which is better than what most budget rifles offer at this price point. The SOCOM contour barrel is properly finished and Radical’s quality control has improved significantly over the years.

The 5.56 NATO rifle has a shot-peened 8620 bolt carrier group that’s magnetic particle inspected, aluminum receivers, and a 16-inch free-floating barrel produced from 4140 chrome-moly vanadium steel and Melonite coated. The first time we saw this deal we wrote it off as an anomaly. We’ve seen enough since to know that this rifle is slipping toward the magic $500 mark. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes the Rock River Arms is much closer to $500. It climbs and drops down the list accordingly.

This is one of the top brands out there and the price is too cheap. OK, it’s the shorter handguard and aluminum receivers, but that means it’s much lighter.

Plenty of space for lights, lasers, and accessories on the M-LOK rail, and it’s great for home defense and hunting. A sub 6lb AR-15 with a proper 16 inch barrel from the official supplier of LEOs around the United States at almost the right price point.

The Rock River Arms RRage brings a premium brand and aesthetic to the cheap AR-15 market by using a proprietary extruded 6061-T6 aluminum upper and handguard. This mimics the look and rigidity of a high-end monolithic receiver at a fraction of the cost. RRA is legendary for tight tolerances, and the RRage is no exception. The fitment between upper and lower is among the best in the budget category.

A Modern 5.56 NATO Classic

The stock S&W M&P15 Sport II is the entry-level, for sure, and you might want to switch out the retro sight set and fit full-length Picatinny rails or go for a free-float handguard around the steel barrel. The Sport III addresses most of those gripes from the factory.

The basic S&W M&P 15 Sport III 5.56 NATO semi-automatic rifle with a 16 inch barrel has all you need to get started. The mil-spec trigger is a little on the grainy side and the polymer-lined handguard area still gets warm in a hurry. These are the only real issues with this solid starter rifle.

Two SKUs ship at launch. Model 28601 is the carbine-gas variant with M4-style stock, A2 grip, and a partial Picatinny handguard with M-LOK slots at $699 MSRP. Model 28600 is the mid-length-gas version with a full-length top rail, free-float handguard, Magpul DT-Carbine collapsible stock and MOE-K2 grip at $749 MSRP. Both share the same 16.1-inch nitrided 1:8 government barrel and Type III hard-anodized 7075 forged receivers.
