Quick Take
The Custom LW is a full-size Kimber 1911 with an aluminum frame. Same 5 inch barrel, same 8.7 inch length and same grip as the steel Custom II, at 31.2 ounces instead of 38. It carries noticeably better on a belt, it shoots a little snappier, and ours ran 800 rounds with three stoppages, all of them early and all of them explainable.
What surprised me is the price. Kimber’s own spec sheets give the LW a stainless match grade barrel, where the Custom II gets carbon steel, and the LW still costs less. Live prices start at $609.99 for a Nightstar, and the cheapest new one from a trusted retailer is the KCB Club Bundle at $649.99, a box that also holds a holster, magazine carriers and a range bag.
The catch is the name. “Custom LW” covers the Shadow Ghost, the Nightstar, the KCB, the Liberty and a handful of retailer specials, and they differ in sights, grips, magazines and finish. Pick the trim before you pick the price.
Best For: Shooters who want a real Kimber with a full 5 inch sight radius for the range or open carry, and who would rather carry 31 ounces than 38. Not for anyone who shoots heavy .45 loads every week and wants a frame that will outlast them.
Which Custom LW Are You Buying?
Kimber publishes full spec pages for three Custom LW trims, and every one of them opens with the same line: a “limited time special offering.” One Guns.com listing still carries the name “2020 Shot Show Custom LW”, so that limited time has run about six years. Retailers carry more versions than Kimber’s own pages show, including the Liberty, Night Patrol, TBM9, Magpul-gripped FDE and Ranger Green guns, optics ready threaded models and even a 10mm X-Hunter with a compensator.

Every trim on Kimber’s pages weighs the same 31.2 ounces, shares the 5 inch stainless match barrel and 1:16 left hand twist, and runs the same 3-hole aluminum trigger set at 4 to 5 pounds. What you are choosing between is cosmetics, sights and what comes in the box.

The Shadow Ghost is the most discounted trim. Classic Firearms has a new .45 (SKU 3700693) at $544.44, which is $324 under Kimber’s $868 list, while trusted sellers start it at $703.99. That spread is why a bare “Custom LW” search jumps around so much.
The Club Bundle Is the Cheapest Way In
This is the part nobody spells out. Kimber lists the KCB at $839, below the bare Shadow Ghost at $868, and the KCB box includes three magazines, a Mission First Tactical holster, Mission First Tactical magazine carriers and a Kimber range bag. Kimber values the extras at over $200. On the street the order holds: the KCB is the cheapest new Custom LW at a trusted retailer, $649.99 at Palmetto State Armory.
Three things come with that discount, and all three are on Kimber’s own spec block. The KCB is .45 ACP only. Its front sight is a white dot, not the red fiber optic the other trims get. And the three magazines are 7 rounders, while the Shadow Ghost and Nightstar sheets list 8 in .45. Any standard 8 round 1911 magazine fixes the last one for $30 to $45.
If you want 9mm, the fiber optic or the laminate grips, buy the Shadow Ghost or the Nightstar. If you want a .45 and a complete kit for the least money, the KCB is the answer, and it is the gun in our photos.
The Liberty is the one to watch in search results. It sells at Bass Pro, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Palmetto as a 7+1 .45 and in 9mm, the card above starts it at $519.97 for a 9mm, trusted sellers begin at $658.99, and Kimber’s spec pages do not list it. Read the listing for sights and magazine count before you compare it to the three above.
Lighter Than a Custom II, And Better Parts on Paper
Put the two spec sheets side by side. Kimber’s Custom II page lists a steel frame, a carbon steel barrel, fixed low profile sights and 38 ounces. The Custom LW lists an aluminum frame, a stainless match grade barrel, a red fiber optic front on most trims and 31.2 ounces. Height, width, length, barrel length and twist are identical.
That is 6.8 ounces, about 18 percent of the gun, gone from the frame alone. On a belt all day it is the difference between a 1911 you notice and one you forget. Kimber’s own store asks $1,085 for the Custom II it still publishes a full sheet for, the California model, against $842 for a Shadow Ghost.
One more oddity from the sheets. The 9mm and .45 Custom LW weigh exactly the same, 31.2 ounces each. On the Kimber 2K11 the 9mm came out heavier than the .45, because a 9mm barrel keeps the same outside diameter with a smaller hole. Kimber either rounds the LW to one figure or the difference disappears in the alloy frame. The recoil springs do differ, 14 pounds for 9mm and 16 for .45, so order spares by caliber.
How We Tested It
Our gun was a .45 ACP KCB, run over five sessions at an outdoor range in temperatures from 48 to 71 degrees. Total count: 800 rounds, cleaned once at round 400.
Phase 1: Break-In
The first 250 rounds were mostly Federal American Eagle and Blazer Brass 230 grain FMJ, with a box of Hornady Critical Defense mixed in to see how a new gun handled a blunt hollow point, all fed from the three KCB magazines and two 8 round Wilson Combat magazines. The slide was tight out of the box, tight enough that racking it felt gritty for the first hundred rounds. By the end of the second session it had smoothed out, and the KimPro on the slide rails showed the usual bright wear lines and nothing worse.
Phase 2: Reliability
Three stoppages in 800 rounds, and here is the whole log:
- Rounds 64 and 121: failures to feed with Hornady Critical Defense 185 grain FTX, the nose stopping on the feed ramp. Classic tight-new-1911 behavior with a short, blunt hollow point.
- Round 258: slide failed to lock back on an empty KCB magazine. It happened once and never again with that magazine.
After round 260 the gun ran clean through everything, including 100 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense that had choked it earlier, 100 rounds of Federal HST 230 grain and 50 of Speer Gold Dot 230 grain. Ejection was consistent, landing brass four to six feet at about four o’clock.
Phase 3: Accuracy
Five shot groups off a rest. At 15 yards the best group was 1.4 inches with Federal Gold Medal Match 185 grain semi-wadcutter, and the average across all loads was 2.1 inches. At 25 yards the average opened to 3.2 inches, with the 230 grain HST the most consistent defensive load at 2.9.
The trigger measured 4 pounds 6 ounces on our gauge, averaged over ten pulls, with a short take-up and a clean break. That sits inside Kimber’s stated 4 to 5 pound range and it is a big part of why a lightweight gun still shoots small groups.

Performance Results
Reliability (8/10)
Two of the three stoppages came from one load in the first 150 rounds, and the third was a single failure to lock back. That is a new 1911 wearing in, not a pattern. It loses a point because a carry gun should feed a mainstream defensive load from round one.
Accuracy (8/10)
1.4 inches at 15 yards with match ammo and about 2 inches with anything decent is right where a 5 inch Kimber should be. The match barrel and bushing are doing the work, and the light frame did not open the groups.
Ergonomics and Recoil (8/10)
You feel the missing 6.8 ounces in both directions. Carried in the included holster it is a much easier companion than a steel Government, and in the hand it points exactly like one. Shooting 230 grain loads, the muzzle climbs faster than on a 38 ounce gun, enough that my split times ran a tenth slower until I got used to it. Nobody will call it harsh.
Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (7/10)
The slide to frame fit is tight and even, the barrel locks up without wobble and the KimPro finish wore only on the rails. The grip safety had a touch of side play and one grip screw backed out during session four. A drop of blue thread locker fixed it.

The Aluminum Frame
The whole point of the LW is the frame, and the trade is well understood. Aluminum saves the weight, but it is softer than steel, so the frame rails and the feed ramp area wear faster under a steady diet of hot .45. For a gun that gets a few hundred rounds a year and a lot of carrying, that is a trade worth making. For a gun that sees a thousand rounds a month, buy steel.

Sights and Optics
None of the three trims on Kimber’s spec pages is cut for an optic. They wear a fixed white dot rear with a red fiber optic front, or a white dot front on the KCB. If you want a red dot, retailers sell separate optics ready Shadow Ghost SKUs (3000456 to 3000459 in EuroOptic’s listings) and a Nightstar with a Vortex Venom already fitted. Buy those, rather than paying a gunsmith to mill a standard slide.
How It Compares

Kimber Custom II GFO ($700-$828)
The steel sibling. Kimber’s sheet puts the Custom II at 38 ounces, and the version in stock right now is the GFO, from $699.77, or $752.99 at a trusted seller, about $100 more than the KCB. The extra weight soaks up recoil better. If this is a range gun first and a carry gun never, the steel frame is the better long-term buy. If it rides on your hip, the LW is the smarter Kimber.
Springfield Armory 1911 Ronin ($773-$1,000)
The obvious rival at the same money, and the Ronin costs more: a 5 inch .45 starts at $772.77 and trusted sellers begin at $849.99. It is an all-steel gun with a two-tone finish, and several versions come optics ready. It is heavier and pricier than the Kimber, and it is the better pick if a red dot is the plan.
Girsan Untouchable MC1911 ($392-$440)
The budget answer at $429.99 from a trusted seller, over $200 less than the cheapest Custom LW. In our Girsan MC1911 review it was a sound steel gun, but it is heavier and it ships with one magazine. The Taurus 1911 sits a step above it at $546.99. Both are good 1911s. Neither is a lightweight or a Kimber.
Verdict: The Custom II is the steel choice, the Ronin is the optic choice and the Girsan is the money choice. The Custom LW is the one you buy to carry a full-size 1911 without carrying a full-size weight.

Common Problems and Fixes
- Tight slide when new: Normal on a Kimber. Shoot 250 rounds of ball and keep the rails wet. Do not polish anything.
- Feeding blunt hollow points early: Ours balked twice with 185 grain FTX before round 150 and never after. Break it in with ball first.
- Grip screws backing out: Common on 1911s. A drop of blue thread locker on each screw, about $8 a bottle.
- Buying the wrong trim: Check the listing for sights, grips, caliber and magazine count. The KCB is .45 only with 7 round magazines.
Who Should NOT Buy This Gun
- The high-volume range shooter: An aluminum frame wears faster under thousands of hot .45 rounds. Buy the steel Kimber Custom II.
- Anyone planning a red dot: The standard trims have no optic cut. Buy a Springfield Ronin optics ready model or an optics ready Shadow Ghost SKU.
- Buyers on a hard $450 budget: The Girsan Untouchable MC1911 is a sound steel 1911 for about $430.
- Deep concealment carriers: A 5 inch barrel and 8.7 inches of gun are a lot to hide. The Kimber Micro 9 or a 3 inch Ultra Carry II carries far easier.
Final Verdict
The Kimber Custom LW is the lightest full-size Kimber you can buy for the least money, and on paper it has better parts than the steel Custom II that costs more. Ours shot 1.4 inch groups, ran clean after a short break-in and carried like a much smaller gun.
Buy it knowing two things. The aluminum frame is a carry and casual range choice, not a 1,000 rounds a month choice. And the name covers a dozen trims, so match the sights, grips, caliber and magazines to what you want before you chase the lowest price. For a .45, the KCB bundle is the best deal in the family.
