Quick Take

The Kimber R7 Mako is Kimber’s micro-compact 9mm, a striker-fired pistol aimed squarely at the SIG P365 crowd. It holds 11+1 in a gun 1.0 inch wide at the grip and weighs 19.5 ounces, and every one wears TruGlo tritium night sights and an optic-ready stainless slide.

I put 700 rounds through an R7 Mako OR, model 3800004. It had two stoppages, both in the first 200 rounds and neither after. It shot 2.3 inches at 15 yards with Gold Dot. At $413.99 on the street it is cheaper than a P365 and comes with better sights out of the box.

There’s one thing any used-gun buyer has to know: Kimber recalled a batch of early R7s in 2022 for a firing pin safety block defect. The short answer: new guns are a strong buy, and used ones need a serial check first.

Best For: Concealed carriers who want night sights and optic readiness without paying for upgrades. Not for shooters who want the widest holster and aftermarket choice, where the P365 and Shield Plus lead.

Design Intent: Kimber’s Answer to the P365

Kimber built its name on 1911s, and the R7 Mako is its move into the micro-compact striker class that the SIG P365 created. The recipe is familiar: a double-stack magazine in a single-stack-width grip, 11+1 in the standard magazine and a 3.37 inch barrel.

Kimber’s twist is what comes standard. TruGlo Tritium Pro night sights with an orange front ring, a stainless slide milled for a micro red dot, a flat-faced trigger and ambidextrous controls. The frame is polymer around a serialized steel central block, and the barrel uses a 1:10 left-hand twist.

The 2022 Firing Pin Safety Recall

In February 2022, Kimber announced a recall of certain R7 handguns shipped from January 10 through February 14, 2022. Kimber’s notice says those guns had a quality issue with the firing pin safety block and “may release multiple rounds from a single trigger pull.” It told owners not to load, use or sell an affected gun.

Kimber still publishes the affected serial numbers on its R7 recall page. When we checked on September 26, 2026, the list held 3,600 serials between R00041 and R14498. Kimber inspects and fixes affected guns free, including shipping both ways.

What it means for you: a new R7 from a dealer today is well outside that window. If you’re buying used, check the serial on Kimber’s recall list before you pay.

Kimber R7 Mako Variants

The R7 name covers several pistols now. Here are the main ones with Kimber’s list price where it publishes one.

Two things the listings hide. First, PSA and at least one other retailer sell SKU 3800004, the plain R7 Mako OR, as the “R7 Liberty OR.” It’s the same gun, so search both names.

Second, Kimber contradicts itself on the Carbon Compact’s trigger. The marketing text promises a Performance Carry Trigger with a break “at 4 pounds or less,” while the spec table on the same page lists a factory setting of 5.0 to 6.75 pounds. If trigger weight decides it for you, try one before you buy.

Competitor Comparison

The micro-compact 9mm class is the most crowded in the store. Here’s the R7 against four guns people cross-shop it with.

Sig Sauer P365 (from $499.99)

The gun the R7 is chasing. The P365 has a 3.1 inch barrel, 10-round magazines and the biggest holster and aftermarket support in the class. It costs about $85 more. The Kimber ships with night sights and an optic cut, so it is the better deal for the money if you do not need the P365’s ecosystem.

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield Plus (from $392.99)

The Shield Plus is slightly cheaper, has a 3.1 inch barrel and holds 10 or 13 rounds. It’s a proven carry gun with huge holster support. The R7 has the better sights out of the box.

Ruger MAX-9 (from $249.99)

The budget micro 9. The MAX-9 has a 3.2 inch barrel and 10 or 12 rounds and costs about $165 less than the Kimber. If price is everything, it’s hard to argue with. The Kimber has the nicer sights and finish.

Taurus GX4 (from $264.99)

The GX4 is the other budget choice, with a 3 inch barrel and 11+1 capacity like the R7. It’s about $150 cheaper. For a first carry gun on a tight budget it’s a fair pick. The Kimber is better finished and comes with tritium sights.

Testing Protocol

My test pistol was a new R7 Mako OR, SKU 3800004, with its factory night sights and the 11 and 13 round magazines. I shot it over five range trips in August and September, from 62 to 93 degrees, at 7, 10 and 15 yards, and carried it for two weeks in an inside-the-waistband holster.

Ammunition Log

• Federal American Eagle 115 gr FMJ: 300 rounds

Phase 1: Break-In

I cleaned and lubed the pistol and fired the first 200 rounds of American Eagle at 7 yards. It had two stoppages in that stretch: a failure to feed from the 13-round magazine at round 64 and a failure to lock back on an empty magazine at round 151. Both cleared with a tap and rack.

Phase 2: Reliability

Rounds 201 to 700 mixed all four loads, including one-handed strings and fast reloads. No more stoppages. Both defensive hollow points fed and cycled cleanly, and the slide locked back on every empty magazine after the break-in.

Phase 3: Accuracy

I fired five-shot groups off a rest at 15 yards, five groups per load. Speer Gold Dot averaged 2.3 inches, Critical Defense 2.6 inches, Blazer Brass 2.8 inches and American Eagle 3.0 inches. At 7 yards, fast strings stayed in a fist-size group. The trigger measured about 6 pounds on my gauge, inside Kimber’s 5.5 to 6.75 pound range.

Tracking & Observations

After 700 rounds and two weeks of carry, the FNC finish showed holster wear at the muzzle and nothing else. The tritium sights were bright in a dark room and easy to pick up in daylight thanks to the orange front ring.

What This Means for You

• Upgrade Impact: A micro red dot on the optic cut is the one upgrade worth making.
• Reliability: Shoot 200 rounds before you carry it.
• Ammo Preference: 124 gr loads grouped best.
• Maintenance: Clean every 500 rounds or so.
• Used Guns: Check the serial against Kimber’s recall list.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (8/10)

Two stoppages during break-in, then 500 clean rounds with range and defensive ammo. That’s acceptable for a new carry gun, and it is why I’d shoot 200 rounds before trusting any of them.

Accuracy (8/10)

A 2.3 inch average at 15 yards is good for a gun this small. The night sights are the reason: they’re easy to see and easy to line up.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

The molded stippling grips well without chewing skin, and the 13-round magazine gives a full grip. Recoil is snappy, as it is on every micro 9. The trigger is heavier than a P365’s, with a clean enough break.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)

The slide fit is tight and the FNC finish is even. The recall is the black mark on the R7’s record, and it’s the reason quality control doesn’t score higher.

Value (8/10)

At $413.99, night sights and an optic cut are a lot of pistol. A P365 costs about $85 more and comes with plain sights. A MAX-9 or GX4 costs less but can’t match the Kimber’s sights.

Features (9/10)

Tritium night sights, an optic-ready slide, ambidextrous controls and three magazine sizes. That’s more standard equipment than anything else at this price.

Technical Deep Dive

Frame and Slide

The frame is polymer with molded stippling around a serialized steel central block, so the serial number lives on the steel block, not the grip shell. The slide is stainless with an FNC finish and a milled optic cut under a cover plate. A captured recoil spring assembly sits under the 3.37 inch stainless barrel.

Final Verdict

The R7 Mako is a well-equipped micro 9. Mine settled in after 200 rounds, ran clean for the next 500, shot 2.3 inches at 15 yards and carried comfortably. The 2022 recall and the heavier trigger are the only real marks against it.
