Quick Take

The Kimber CDS9 (Kimber’s Classic page says it stands for Covert Double Stack 9mm) is Kimber’s answer to the micro-compact wave: 15+1 of 9mm in a gun 1.1 in. wide, but with a hammer, a thumb safety and what Kimber calls “1911 trigger characteristics” instead of a striker. Kimber says it entered the market in early 2025 as the successor to the Micro 9.

I shot two. A black CDS9 (OR)(RL) (3600006) with an optic took 800 rounds with two feed stoppages, both in the first 100. A gray CDS9 Classic (3600012) with night sights took 400 with one. The trigger is the story: mine broke at 4 lb 9 oz with a short, clean reset, and that’s what makes this gun shoot small groups for its size.

The catch is the name. Kimber sells two guns called “CDS9 (OR)(RL)”: the original 3600003 at $1,115 and a revised 3600006 at $839, which Kimber says came from “refined manufacturing processes” and “cost savings.” They look alike in a listing and they aren’t the same gun. More on that below.

Best For: Concealed carriers who want a 1911-style single action trigger and high capacity in a micro-compact. Not for shooters who don’t want a manual safety, or who want the cheapest 15-round carry gun.

One Name, Two Guns: The $276 CDS9 (OR)(RL) Split

Search “CDS9 OR RL” and you’ll get two different pistols. Kimber’s own site lists both under almost the same name. Here’s what separates them, straight from Kimber’s spec pages:

Kimber is open about why. The 3600006 page says the CDS9 entered the market in early 2025, and “since its release, we have refined our manufacturing processes and delivered additional value through cost savings.” Those savings are the G10 grips, the checkered mainspring housing and the dedicated rear sight.

That last one matters more than it sounds. On the $839 gun the rear sight lives on the optic cover plate, so when you mount a red dot the plate comes off and you’re running the optic with no rear iron behind it. On the 3600003 the rear sight is separate. Street prices widen the gap: Palmetto State Armory had the 3600003 at $968.99, while the 3600006 sold for about $690 to $743 at the retailers carrying it. If you want an optic anyway, the cheaper gun is the smarter buy.

Design Intent: Why Kimber Built It This Way

The Kimber Micro 9 is a small 9mm that retailers list with 7-round magazines, while the P365 and Hellcat crowd carries 10 to 17. The CDS9 is Kimber keeping the single action trigger and the thumb safety and going to a double stack, which Kimber says makes it the most capable compact, hammer-fired, fully ambidextrous high-capacity handgun it has built.

The rest follows from that. An aluminum frame keeps it near 21 oz. A stainless steel slide, an external extractor and an accessory rail make it a modern carry gun. The optic cut takes the RMSc footprint. And the frame on both our guns is stamped KIMBER TROY AL USA, for Troy, Alabama.

Kimber CDS9 Variants

Kimber lists seven CDS9 models on its own site, and retailers sell several more that Kimber doesn’t show:

Three things in that list are worth knowing. The Classic is the cheapest CDS9 Kimber lists, at $795, and it’s the only one with tritium night sights, so the gun with the best irons costs the least. The TFS is only $14 more than the 3600003 and gets you a longer threaded barrel. And Kimber’s spec sheets list the TFS and 3600003 at 20.8 oz, lighter than the 21.44 oz 3.18 in. guns, which doesn’t square with a longer barrel. The G10 grips may account for some of it, but I’d treat the ounce figures as approximate.

The Lite, Shadow Ghost and Minotaur you’ll see at retailers aren’t on Kimber’s current pages, the same dealer-only pattern we found on the Custom II GFO. Buy them on the retailer’s description and photos, since Kimber publishes no spec for them.

Competitor Comparison

The CDS9 lands in the most crowded class in the gun store. Here’s how it compares with the carry guns people shop it against.

Kimber Micro 9 ($389.99 to $603.99)

The gun the CDS9 replaces. Retailers list the Micro 9 with 7-round magazines and a 3.15 in. barrel, so it’s smaller and holds about half as much. It’s also a few hundred dollars cheaper and there are a lot of them around. If you want the Kimber trigger in the smallest package and 7+1 is enough, the Micro 9 still makes sense.

SIG Sauer P365 ($466.99 to $509.99)

The P365 is the default micro-compact and the gun the CDS9 has to beat. Retailers list it with a 3.1 in. barrel and 10-round magazines, and it’s a striker gun, so no hammer and no required thumb safety. It’s cheaper and easy to find. Springfield Hellcat Pro ($564.99 to $589.99)

The Hellcat Pro is the capacity pick. Retailers list the OSP with a 3.7 in. barrel and 15 or 17-round magazines, and it sells for $150 or so under a CDS9. The OSP models are optic ready. Staccato CS ($2,599.99 to $3,220.99)

If you want a double stack carry gun with a 1911-style trigger and money is no object, this is the other answer. Retailers list the Staccato CS as a 2011 with an aluminum frame. It costs three to four times as much as a CDS9. That’s the fairest way to see the Kimber: a lot of what a CS does, for a quarter of the money. Our best Staccato guns covers the line.

Verdict: The P365 and Hellcat Pro are cheaper and simpler. The CDS9 is for the shooter who wants a single action trigger and a thumb safety in a 15-round carry gun, and at around $700 it’s the least expensive way to get that from a big maker. Testing Protocol

We shot two guns: a black CDS9 (OR)(RL) 3600006 with a Shield RMSc micro dot, and a gray CDS9 Classic 3600012 on its night sights. That’s 1,200 rounds over six range sessions in September at an outdoor range, from 58°F to 88°F, plus two weeks of daily carry with the black gun in an inside-the-waistband holster at 4 o’clock.

Phase 1: Break-In

Both guns came dry. I lubed the rails and the barrel hood and started each on range FMJ. The first 100 rounds through each were where every stoppage in this test happened, which fits a new, tight single action gun. After that, neither gun gave me anything to write down.

Phase 2: Reliability

The black 3600006 had two failures to feed in its first 100 rounds, at rounds 37 and 64. Both were Blazer Brass 124 gr, both the top round in a freshly loaded 15-round magazine nosing into the feed ramp. A tap and rack cleared each. The next 736 rounds ran clean, including all 300 rounds of hollow points.

The Classic had one failure to eject at round 22 with Winchester White Box, a case caught upright in the port. The remaining 378 were clean. So that’s three stoppages in 1,200 rounds, all in the first 100 of each gun, and none with defensive ammo. I’d put 150 rounds of FMJ through any new CDS9 before carrying it.

Phase 3: Accuracy

From a rest at 15 yards, five-shot groups with the dotted 3600006 averaged 1.9 in. with Federal HST 124 gr, 2.1 in. with Gold Dot 124 gr +P and 2.6 in. with American Eagle. The Classic on its night sights averaged 2.2 in. with HST 147 gr at the same distance. At 7 yards offhand, both guns kept a full magazine inside a 3 in. circle without trying hard.

Our trigger gauge read 4 lb 9 oz on the 3600006 and 4 lb 12 oz on the Classic. The flat face and short reset make fast pairs easy, and it’s the best trigger I’ve shot on a gun this size outside a custom shop.

Tracking & Observations

After 800 rounds the black 3600006 showed a thin wear line on the DLC slide where it meets the frame, and holster wear on the muzzle after two weeks of carry. The aluminum frame rails looked clean. The front edge of the thumb safety on the Classic was sharper than I’d like and rubbed through a T-shirt during carry; a minute with fine stone fixed it.

What This Means for You

• Reliability: Plan on a 150-round break-in with FMJ before you carry it.
• Ammo Preference: Federal HST 124 gr grouped best and ran perfectly.
• Accuracy Expectation: About 2 in. at 15 yards with good ammo and a dot.
• Maintenance: Keep the rails lubed; clean every 400 to 500 rounds.
• Upgrade Impact: An RMSc footprint micro dot is the biggest upgrade on OR models.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (8/10)

Three stoppages in 1,200 rounds, all early, none with hollow points. That’s a break-in pattern, not a problem gun, but it’s why I’d shoot it before trusting it.

Accuracy (9/10)

This is where the CDS9 earns its price. The single action trigger lets a 3.18 in. gun shoot like a bigger one, and with a dot it’s easy to keep everything inside 2 in. at 15 yards.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

At 1.1 in. wide the grip is thin enough to hide well, and the 15-round magazine gives you a full hand. Recoil is snappy, as you’d expect from 21 oz of 9mm. The ambidextrous thumb safety is well placed, but if you’ve only carried strikers, practice sweeping it off on the draw until it’s automatic. Our concealed carry manual safety guide covers that.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)

Machining is clean, the slide fit is tight and the DLC and KimPro II finishes are even. The sharp safety edge on the Classic cost a point.

Value (8/10)

Around $700 on the street for a 15+1 single action carry gun from a big maker is fair. The $1,115 3600003 is harder to justify when the $839 gun shoots the same.

Features (8/10)

Ambidextrous controls, an accessory rail, an optic cut on most models and both a 13 and a 15-round magazine in the box. Losing the rear sight when you mount a dot on the $839 gun is the one miss.

Slide, Barrel and Frame

Every CDS9 has a stainless steel slide with front and rear serrations and an external extractor, over an aluminum frame with an accessory rail. The barrel is stainless, match grade and cut with 5R rifling at a 1:10 right-hand twist. OR models have a direct mount optic cut for the RMSc footprint.

Trigger and Safety

Kimber describes the trigger as flat faced with a vertical break point and the gun as hammer-fired with “1911 trigger characteristics,” and retailers list it as single action. The thumb safety is ambidextrous on every model, so left-handed shooters get the same controls.

Magazines

Kimber ships one 13-round and one 15-round magazine with most models, and lists the height as 4.56 in. with a 10-round magazine, 5.0 in. with the 13 and 5.52 in. with the 15. Retailers also carry a CDS9 that ships with two 10-round magazines (3600018) for buyers who need them.

Common Problems & Solutions

• Early feed stoppages: Ours both came in the first 100 rounds with a full 15-round magazine. Lube the rails, shoot 150 rounds of FMJ, and load magazines fully a few times to wear in the springs.
• No rear sight with a dot: On the 3600006 and 3600007 the rear sight is on the optic plate. Pick an optic you trust, or buy the 3600003 or TFS, which have a separate rear sight.
• Buying the wrong CDS9 (OR)(RL): Check the SKU. 3600003 is the $1,115 original with G10 grips; 3600006 and 3600007 are the $839 revision.
• Sharp thumb safety edge: Ours rubbed a shirt. Break the edge lightly with a fine stone, or have a gunsmith do it.
• Dealer-only trims: Kimber publishes no spec for the Lite, Shadow Ghost or Minotaur, so check the listing and photos carefully.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The CDS9 is a great carry gun for the right shooter, but it’s not for everyone.

• Shooters who don’t want a manual safety: The SIG Sauer P365 is a striker gun without a required thumb safety.
• Budget buyers who want capacity: The Springfield Hellcat Pro sells for less and holds 15 or 17.
• Anyone who wants the smallest Kimber: The Kimber Micro 9 is smaller and cheaper.
• Buyers who want a duty-grade double stack: The Staccato CS costs far more but is built for it.

Final Verdict

The Kimber CDS9 gives you a single action trigger, a thumb safety and 15+1 in a 21 oz gun, and it shot better than anything else I’ve carried in this size. After a short break-in it ran everything I fed it.

My pick is the $839 3600006 if you’ll run a dot, or the $795 Classic if you want night sights and no optic. Skip the $1,115 3600003 unless you want its G10 grips and separate rear sight enough to pay about $250 more on the street.
