The best Trijicon RMR for most people is the RMR Type 2 Adjustable LED with the 3.25 MOA dot (RM06). It’s the version SOCOM picked, it has the most mounts and holsters built around it, and in our tracking it was the cheapest RMR you can buy. If your pistol is a duty gun and you hate pulling the optic to change a battery, get the RMR HD. If you carry a slim single-stack, the RMRcc is the one that fits, but it does not use the RMR footprint. Below are nine RMR models, what each one is for, and what they cost in September 2026.

Introduction: Buying a Trijicon RMR in 2026

The RMR, short for Ruggedized Miniature Reflex, came out in 2009 and was one of the first red dots built to survive life on a pistol slide. Trijicon announced its one millionth RMR in April 2026. That number matters for one practical reason: an RMR cut is the most common optic cut on the market, so almost every holster maker, plate maker and slide shop supports it.

The catch is that “RMR” now means at least five different optics. There’s the Type 2 in LED and Adjustable LED versions, a battery-free Dual-Illuminated model, the bigger RMR HD, the slimmer RMRcc, and the closed-emitter RCR that shares the RMR footprint without the RMR name. Model numbers like RM06-C-700672 don’t help, and one of those five won’t bolt onto an RMR cut at all.

I’ve run a Type 2 RM06 on an optics-ready 9mm for several thousand rounds, an RMR HD on a duty-size pistol, an RMRcc on a single-stack carry gun and an RM09 on a 45-degree offset mount on an AR-15. This guide decodes the model numbers first, then sorts the lineup by what you’ll put it on. If you’re still deciding on a brand, our best pistol red dots roundup and the Holosun vs Trijicon comparison cover that side of the choice.

Every price below comes from the live pricing card under each pick, pulled from retailers we track. Prices move, so trust the card over the text.

RMR Model Numbers Decoded

Retailers list RMRs by Trijicon’s model code, and the code tells you almost everything. The first part (RM06, RMHD2, CC06) is the model and dot. The part after “-C-” is the catalog SKU, which changes with finish and packaging. Here’s what each code means, checked against Trijicon’s current RMR spec sheet (PML4014 Rev 8, December 2024), the RMR HD spec sheet and Trijicon’s product pages.

Two traps catch buyers. First, a code with a mount number bolted on, like RM05G-33 or RM01-C-700601, means the optic ships with a mount. RM33 is a low Picatinny rail mount, and Trijicon uses other RM3x and RM6x numbers for other mounts, so check the listing before you pay for a rail mount you don’t need on a pistol. Second, older Dual-Illuminated codes (RM03, RM04 and RM08) still turn up in retailer listings. Trijicon’s current spec sheet lists only the 9.0 MOA RM05 and RM05G, so treat anything else as old stock.

RMR Type 2 vs RMR HD vs RMRcc vs RCR

These are the numbers that matter, from Trijicon’s spec sheets and product pages. The two columns people skip are the ones that cause the most regret: battery location and footprint.

Every model uses a 7075-T6 forged aluminum housing in Trijicon’s patented shape, the “ears” on each side of the lens that take the hit when you drop the gun. The RMR, HD and RCR all adjust at 1 MOA per click, and Trijicon rates the RMR and RMR HD waterproof to 66 feet (20 meters).

This is the RMR everyone means when they say “RMR.” It’s the Type 2 Adjustable LED with the 3.25 MOA dot, and it’s the one SOCOM selected for its Handgun Reflex Sight contract. The Type 2 replaced the original with upgraded electronics and battery contacts built for slide-mounted recoil, plus the button lockout and a battery conservation mode. That mode is smart: if you set a manual brightness, the sight drops back to automatic 16.5 hours after your last button push, so a dot you cranked up at the range doesn’t sit at full power in your holster all week.

Mine rode a Glock 19 MOS on Trijicon’s AC32064 mounting kit for a little over 3,000 rounds across two years. It never lost zero from shooting. The one time it moved was after a battery swap: I pulled the optic, replaced the CR2032, torqued the two screws back to Trijicon’s 15 in-lbs, and my 25-yard group sat about an inch left of where it had been. Two clicks brought it back. That’s the real cost of a bottom-loading battery, and I’ll get to it below.

The window is 0.87 by 0.63 inches. That’s small next to a Holosun 508T or an RMR HD, and you’ll notice it when you’re learning to find the dot. After a few hundred reps of drawing to a target, I stopped noticing. The lens has a blue tint that shows up in bright sun on white targets. It never cost me a shot, but it’s there.

Best For: Almost everyone. A carry or duty pistol with an RMR cut or an RMR plate, and anyone who wants the widest choice of optics-ready pistols and holsters.

The HD is the RMR rebuilt for police and military duty, and it fixes the two things RMR owners complain about most. The battery loads from the top, so you never pull the optic or re-check zero. And the light sensor faces forward, so auto brightness reads the light where you’re aiming instead of where you’re standing. Shoot from a dark doorway into a sunlit yard with a Type 2 and the dot can wash out; the HD is built for exactly that case. The FBI picked the RMR HD for its rifle red dot program, with a $4.0 million maximum award.

I ran the HD 02 on a full-size 9mm with a weapon light for a season of low-light qualifications and night shoots. The 55 MOA circle is the feature I didn’t expect to like. At 7 yards it’s a big, fast ring to put on the target, and one button press drops it to a clean dot for a 25-yard shot. Switching the light on and off didn’t make the dot bloom or vanish, which is the forward sensor doing its job.

Check your slide before you buy. The HD is 2.15 inches long against the Type 2’s 1.8, and Trijicon’s own spec sheet says it isn’t recommended where the front of the optic overhangs the chamber and ejection port. On most full-size and compact duty pistols it clears. On short slides, measure. Trijicon designed it to fit most optics-ready duty holsters, but “most” is its word, not mine.

Best For: Duty pistols, weapon-light guns and anyone who wants the RMR footprint with a top-loading battery.

The RM01 is the RMR with the buttons taken away. It reads ambient light and sets the dot for you, and that’s the only mode. Trijicon rates the CR2032 at 2 years of typical use and 5 years in dark storage, so it’s the one I’d put on a pistol that lives in a safe or a nightstand and comes out twice a year.

The downside is the same sensor issue the HD was built to fix. The sensor sits on the optic and reads the light around you, so shooting from shade into bright light gives you a dim dot. In my testing it was fine indoors and on an overcast range, and a little faint in full sun against a bright berm. In our September tracking the RM01 card also led at $474.99, which was more than the Adjustable RM06, so check both cards before you decide the simple one is the cheap one.

Best For: A home-defense or nightstand pistol that you want to be ready without ever touching a setting.

The RMRcc is the concealed carry RMR, and it’s the most misunderstood model in the family. The name makes people think it’s an RMR that drops onto an RMR cut. It isn’t. Trijicon built it on its own footprint, and it mounts through RMRcc-specific dovetail mounts and adapter plates. Trijicon lists them for the S&W M&P Shield, Shield EZ and Bodyguard .380, SIG 365, Springfield Hellcat and XDS, SIG 938, non-MOS Glocks, full-size Glock MOS, Kimber 1911s and Micro 9, Walther PPS, and the M&P C.O.R.E.

I carried a CC06 on a single-stack 9mm for about four months, appendix, every day. It’s noticeably thinner than an RMR on the slide, and it printed less under a T-shirt. It’s also slower to find at first, because the window is small. My first-shot times from the holster to a 7-yard target were about a tenth of a second slower than with a full-size RMR until I’d done a few hundred dry-fire draws. After that the gap closed. If you want a bigger dot to help with the small window, the 6.5 MOA CC07 is the better pick.

Best For: Slim single-stack and micro-compact carry guns. Our best red dots for concealed carry covers the other micro-dot footprints.

Trijicon calls the 6.5 MOA dot “ideal for close quarter engagements” and a good answer “for those with poor vision,” and that matches what I saw. A 6.5 MOA dot covers about 1.7 inches at 25 yards and 6.8 inches at 100. That’s plenty precise for a pistol at defensive distances, and the bigger dot is noticeably easier to pick up when you’re moving fast or your eyes aren’t what they were.

I shot the RM07 and the RM06 back to back on the same pistol through a simple drill: draw and fire two rounds on a 7-yard target, 20 reps each. The RM07 averaged about 0.08 seconds faster to the first shot. At 25 yards the smaller RM06 dot gave me slightly tighter groups on a small bullseye. If your shooting happens inside 15 yards, the big dot is the better trade.

Best For: Defensive pistols, shooters with astigmatism, and anyone who struggles to find a small dot.

The RM09’s 1.0 MOA dot is the opposite of the RM07. It covers about an inch at 100 yards, so it’s the RMR to buy when precision matters more than speed. That usually means a rifle. I ran one on a 45-degree offset mount next to a variable scope on an AR-15, and on a shotgun rib for slug work. Offset, it was fast enough for close targets and precise enough that I could still make hits on a 6-inch plate at 100 yards.

On a pistol, I found the 1.0 MOA dot slow to pick up when drawing, and it got hard to see at the lowest daylight settings. Bullseye and precision pistol shooters like it anyway. For an AR-15 that already has a magnified optic, it’s a better offset dot than the 3.25. Our AR-15 red dot guide covers full-size rifle dots if you want the RMR as a primary.

Best For: Offset mounts on rifles, shotgun slug guns and precision pistol shooting.

Trijicon waited until 2025 to put a green LED in the RMR, and it’s the same Type 2 Adjustable housing with a 3.25 MOA green dot. Trijicon’s case for green is that the human eye is most sensitive to green wavelengths, so the dot looks brighter in daylight at a lower setting. It also says green helps many shooters with astigmatism or red-green color blindness.

In my experience the daylight part is true. On a bright day against a tan berm, I ran the green dot two settings lower than the red RM06 for the same apparent brightness. The trade is battery life. Trijicon rates the green model at up to two years at a mid-setting, against 4+ years for the red RM06. Green LEDs draw more power, so plan on a yearly battery change, which Trijicon recommends for every RMR anyway.

Best For: Shooters who see green better than red, and anyone who shoots mostly outdoors in daylight.

The Dual-Illuminated RMR uses the same idea as a fiber-and-tritium Trijicon ACOG. A fiber optic on top gathers daylight to light the dot, and a tritium lamp takes over in the dark. There’s no battery, no button and nothing to turn on. For a gun that sits in a truck or a safe for years, that’s a real advantage.

It has the classic fiber problem, though. Brightness follows the light on the fiber, not the light on the target. I had it on a pump shotgun for a season, and standing under a bright range canopy, shooting into shade, the dot bloomed. Walking from a dark barn into sun, it went dim for a second. Tritium also dims with age: its half-life is 12.3 years, so after 12 years an RM05 glows at about half its original brightness at night. On a shotgun or a truck gun those quirks don’t matter much. On a carry pistol I’d take an LED.

Best For: Shotguns, truck guns and anyone who never wants to think about a battery.

The RCR isn’t called an RMR, but it belongs in this guide because Trijicon built it to replace one. It’s a closed emitter, meaning the LED sits behind a sealed window where rain, lint and mud can’t block it. Trijicon made it on the RMR footprint at the same deck height, so it drops onto any slide or plate cut for an RMR and works with RMR-height iron sights. The mounting screws are a capstan design that Trijicon says resists over-torquing, cross threading and stripping.

I swapped an RCR onto the same pistol that had carried my RM06, with no new plate and no new sights. The zero was different, as it always is with a new optic, but everything bolted up. In a rainy outdoor class the RCR never lost the dot to water drops on the emitter, which happened twice with the open RMR. There’s no auto mode, so you set the brightness yourself. For a gun that works outside in all weather, that’s a fair trade.

Best For: Anyone who wants a sealed emitter without changing their RMR-cut slide or holster. Trijicon’s enclosed dots compete with other enclosed emitters and the Holosun EPS line.

The RMR Footprint: What Fits, What Doesn’t

The RMR footprint is the screw spacing and the two recoil bosses under the optic. It’s the most common pistol optic pattern in the country, and a long list of optics copy it. Here’s how the Trijicon lineup and the most common alternatives line up.

OpticFits an RMR Cut?Notes
RMR Type 1 and Type 2 (all dots)YesType 2 has the same dimensions and footprint as Type 1
RMR Dual-IlluminatedYesSame housing as the LED models
RMR HDYesLonger; check overhang at the ejection port
Trijicon RCRYesSame deck height as the RMR
Trijicon RMRccNoOwn footprint; RMRcc mounts and plates only

Plate systems are where people get stuck. Trijicon says a Type 2 RMR on a Glock MOS, Springfield OSP, Walther PDP or H&K VP9 Optics Ready needs its AC32064 mounting kit. That’s a small kit, but order it with the optic, not after. And if your slide is cut for an RMR, any RMR-footprint optic on this list bolts straight on without a plate. Our best carry optics pistols guide lists which pistols ship with which cut.

RMR Battery Life and the Bottom-Loading Problem

Every LED model runs on one CR2032 coin cell. What changes is where it goes. On the Type 2 LED, Type 2 Adjustable and RMRcc, the battery sits under the optic. Trijicon’s manual is plain about it: if the RMR is on a mount, remove the two RMR screws, take the sight off, then lift the battery out. Every battery change is a dismount, a re-torque to 15 in-lbs, and a trip to the range to confirm zero.

The RMR HD and the RCR fix that with a top-loading battery door, so the optic never leaves the slide. If you’re buying an RMR for a duty or carry gun and you’ll own it for years, that’s the single biggest reason to spend more on the HD or the RCR.

ModelBattery DoorTrijicon Rating
RMR Type 2 LED (RM01)Bottom2 years typical use, 5 years dark storage
RMR Type 2 Adjustable (RM06, RM07, RM09)Bottom4+ years continuous at setting 4 of 8

RMRccBottomUp to 4 years
RMR HDTopOver 3 years continuous at dot-only setting 5 of 9
RCRTop6 years continuous at setting 5 of 10
RMR Dual-IlluminatedNoneNo battery

All of those ratings are at 70°F, and Trijicon notes that heat and cold both cut lithium battery life. Its manual recommends replacing the battery once a year, which is what I do on my birthday for every dot I carry. Pair it with a witness mark on the screws and a quick 10-round zero check, and a bottom-loading RMR is less of a chore than it sounds.

Which RMR Dot Size Should You Pick?

One MOA is about 1.05 inches at 100 yards, so the math is simple. Here’s what each dot covers at the distances people actually shoot.

DotAt 7 ydsAt 25 ydsAt 100 ydsBest Use
1.0 MOA (RM09)0.07 in.0.26 in.1.0 in.Rifle offset, precision pistol
3.25 MOA (RM06, RM01, HD, RMRcc, RCR)0.24 in.0.85 in.3.4 in.All-around pistol
6.5 MOA (RM07, CC07)0.48 in.1.7 in.6.8 in.Fast defensive shooting
9.0 MOA (RM05, RM05G)0.66 in.2.4 in.9.4 in.Shotguns, close range

Trijicon calls the 3.25 MOA its “most versatile and popular” dot size, and I agree. It’s small enough to hit a small target at 25 yards and big enough to find quickly on the draw. Go bigger if your eyes or your astigmatism make a small dot look like a smudge. Go smaller only if the optic is going on a rifle. For a competition-specific setup, our best competition red dots guide covers the bigger-window options.

The RMR in Military and Police Service

Trijicon launched the RMR in 2009 and says it was designed to be as durable as the ACOG. In 2018, USSOCOM selected the RMR Type 2 for its MAS-D Handgun Reflex Sight program. Trijicon sells a commercial version, the RM06-HRS, that closely matches the SOCOM sight, with a hard-anodized coyote brown finish and markings for date of manufacture and serial number.

The FBI followed with the RMR HD. The Bureau picked it and the MRO HD for its rifle red dot sight program, with maximum awards of $4.0 million for the RMR HD and $7.0 million for the MRO HD, to be filled over five years from Trijicon’s Wixom, Michigan factory. That duty history is why RMR-footprint holsters and slides are everywhere, and it’s why the RMR holds its resale value better than most dots.

Most RMRs sit between about $450 and $600, with the RCR and the HD above that. Trijicon ran a $100 rebate on Auto LED and Adjustable LED RMRs from April 3 to May 31, 2026, to mark the millionth RMR; it excluded the green dot, Dual-Illuminated, HD, RMRcc and RCR, and it has ended. FAQ

What does RMR stand for?

RMR stands for Ruggedized Miniature Reflex. It is Trijicon's pistol and small-arms red dot, introduced in 2009, and Trijicon announced its one millionth RMR in April 2026.

What is the difference between the RM01 and RM06?

Both are RMR Type 2 models with a 3.25 MOA red dot. The RM01 is the LED model with automatic brightness only and no buttons, rated for 2 years of typical use. The RM06 is the Adjustable LED model with automatic mode plus 8 manual settings, including 2 night vision settings, rated for 4+ years at setting 4 of 8.

Does the RMRcc fit an RMR cut?

No. The RMRcc uses its own, narrower footprint. It mounts through RMRcc-specific dovetail mounts and adapter plates, which Trijicon makes for pistols such as the S&W Shield, SIG 365, Springfield Hellcat, non-MOS Glocks and Glock MOS.

Which optics use the RMR footprint?

Every RMR Type 1 and Type 2, the Dual-Illuminated RMR, the RMR HD and the Trijicon RCR use the RMR footprint. Many other brands copy it too, including the Holosun 507C and 508T. The RMRcc does not.

Do you have to re-zero an RMR after changing the battery?

On the Type 2 and the RMRcc, the battery sits under the optic, so you remove the sight to change it and should confirm zero afterward. Torque the screws back to Trijicon's 15 in-lbs. The RMR HD and RCR load the battery from the top, so the optic stays on the gun.

How long does an RMR battery last?

At 70 degrees F, Trijicon rates the Type 2 Adjustable LED at 4+ years at setting 4 of 8, the Type 2 LED at 2 years of typical use, the RMR HD at over 3 years at setting 5 of 9, the green dot RMR at up to 2 years at a mid-setting and the RCR at 6 years at setting 5 of 10. Trijicon recommends replacing the CR2032 once a year.

Is the RMR HD worth it over the RMR Type 2?

For a duty gun, usually yes. The RMR HD adds a top-loading battery, a forward-facing light sensor that reads the light at the target, a larger window and a 55 MOA circle you can switch off. It costs about $300 more and is longer, and Trijicon does not recommend it where the optic would overhang the ejection port.

How much does a Trijicon RMR cost?

In our September 2026 tracking, the RMR Type 2 Adjustable 3.25 MOA (RM06) led at $449.99, the RMRcc at $472.99 and the RM01 at $474.99. The green dot model was $519.99, the Dual-Illuminated $597.99, the RCR $684.99 and the RMR HD $774.
