The Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gunlocker is a long, flat steel box for one or two home-defense long guns, built to slide under a bed, stand in a closet or ride in a truck. It opens with an RFID tag, a keypad code or a key, and the spring-assisted door drops open the moment it reads you. It isn’t a gun safe in the fire-rated sense. It’s a fast-access locker, and it’s one of the best of them.

I’ve kept an AR and a pistol in one under the bed, used the RFID tag and the keypad side by side, and gone through Hornady’s product page and owner’s manual line by line. This review covers what actually fits, which shotguns don’t, the battery-mode trap, why there’s no fire rating, the warranty fine print and where it costs $186 less for the same box.

  • Fits under a bed or in a vehicle

Cons

  • On batteries, wake the reader first

Quick Take

For a home-defense rifle that has to be both locked away and within reach of the bed, the AR Gunlocker is the right shape and the right speed. The RFID tag on a watchband opens it without looking, the keypad lets a spouse in without a tag, and the box takes a 16-inch AR carbine with room left over for a pistol, magazines and a light.

Know its limits before you buy. It has no fire rating, its warranty is one year, and Hornady won’t send replacement keys if you lose them. Its 40.5 inches inside shuts out a Mossberg 590A1 and a Beretta 1301 Comp. And at the Hornady store’s $585.99 it’s overpriced; Sportsman’s Guide had it at $449.99 on the same day.

Best For: One AR or a short shotgun kept ready by the bed, in a closet or in a vehicle. Not for long-term storage of a collection, and not as fire protection.

The AR Gunlocker, Measured

Unlike most safe makers, Hornady publishes the inside as well as the outside, so I drew both models to scale from those numbers. The standard 98190 and the XL 98191 share the same 42 by 15.25 inch footprint. The XL is simply deeper: 10 inches outside and 8.75 inside, against 6.75 and 5.5 on the standard.

End-on scale drawing of the Hornady AR Gunlocker and AR Gunlocker XL with outside and inside dimensions in inches

The walls are thin, which is why so much of the box is usable. Steel and padding take just 0.875 inch at each side and 0.75 inch at each end, so a 42-inch box holds 40.5 inches of gun. That 40.5 is the number that matters, and the next section is what it means.

One more discrepancy to know about: Hornady’s product page says the standard model weighs 50 pounds and its owner’s manual says 55. The XL is 62. Either way, it’s light enough to carry by the two footlocker-style end handles and heavy enough that it needs securing, which is what the included cable and the pre-drilled mounting holes are for.

What Fits: AR Carbines Yes, Some Shotguns No

Hornady says to check your firearm’s dimensions against the inside before you buy, so I did it for the long guns people actually keep for home defense, using the overall lengths published in our own reviews.

Chart of popular rifles and shotguns by overall length against the Hornady AR Gunlocker's 40.5 inch interior

Standard AR-15 carbines with 16-inch barrels fit. A Ruger AR-556 is 32.25 inches with the stock collapsed and 35.5 extended, so it goes in either way. I kept a 16-inch AR in mine with the stock left where I shoot it, in the single-gun foam layout, and still had room for a pistol, spare magazines and a light. AKs, the Ruger Mini-14 at 38 inches and pistol-caliber carbines like the Ruger PC Carbine at 34.37 all fit too.

Shotguns are where you have to check. The Remington 870 Tactical at 38.5 inches fits, the Mossberg 590M at 39.5 fits, and the Benelli M4 at 40 inches fits with half an inch to spare. The Mossberg 590A1 is 41 inches and the Beretta 1301 Comp is 42, so neither goes in. A hunting shotgun with a 28-inch barrel is out of the question at 48.5 inches. Hornady’s foam blocks can also take a little length, so if your gun is within an inch of the limit, measure it.

Depth matters as much as length. The standard model is 5.5 inches deep inside, enough for two rifles laid on their sides in the foam, but a rifle with a tall optic and a mounted light eats that quickly. If you run big glass or want three guns, the XL’s 8.75 inches is worth the extra 3.25 inches of height. Our best gun safe for AR-15 roundup compares the Gunlocker with full-size AR safes.

Getting In: RFID, Keypad and Keys

This is what the AR Gunlocker does better than almost any long gun safe. It gives you three ways in, and the owner’s manual is clear on how each works.

Diagram of the Hornady AR Gunlocker's RFID, keypad and key entry, with the battery mode button press

The RFID reader takes up to five tags. The box comes with a watchband tag, a key fob and two stickers, and you hold any of them within an inch of the reader on the lid. I stuck one sticker inside my phone case, and opening the safe became a wave of the phone. The watchband tag rides on an ordinary watch strap, so you’re wearing the key without wearing a bracelet.

The keypad takes one code of four to six digits. Program a second code and it replaces the first, so this is a shared code, not one per person. I set both a tag and a code, and I’d recommend everyone does: the code covers you when the tag isn’t on you, and it’s how you let another adult in. The keypad glows red when touched, which helps in the dark. The two round barrel keys are the last resort, and since Hornady won’t replace them, keep them somewhere safe outside the safe.

Setting It Up: Change the Default Code First

The most important line in the owner’s manual is easy to miss: the safe ships with a default code and should be reprogrammed before first use. Do that before you do anything else. A default code is a code someone else may know.

Setup takes about ten minutes. Open the lid with a barrel key, press the red program button inside, enter your 4 to 6 digit code and press the “H” button, then enter it again to confirm. To add a tag, press the program button and hold the tag over the reader; the safe beeps twice when it takes it, and beeps three times if that tag is already stored. Test every tag and the code with the lid open before you close it on a rifle.

Two quirks to plan around. You can’t delete one tag: holding the program button for five seconds erases all of them, and you reprogram the ones you want to keep. So if a tag is lost, wipe the safe and re-add the rest. And check the batteries now and then even if it’s plugged in. Unplug it and press “H”: the light flashes green for good batteries, yellow for low and red for dead. Hornady says to replace them every twelve months.

The Battery-Mode Trap

The AR Gunlocker runs on a 12V 1.0A wall adapter or four AA batteries. On the adapter, the RFID reader is always awake. Unplugged, it goes into a battery-saving mode, and the manual is specific: you must press any button on the lid to wake the reader before the tag will open it.

That’s one extra step at the worst possible moment, so practice it. Better still, keep it plugged in by the bed and use batteries as the backup, not the default. If you keep it in a vehicle with no outlet, build the button press into the habit. Hornady’s handgun RAPiD safes work the same way, as our Vaultek vs Hornady comparison explains.

Steel, Lugs and Security

The housing is 16-gauge steel, 0.0598 inch thick, with four internal hardened locking lugs holding the door. Hornady says it exceeds ASTM International standards for child and pry resistance, lock strength, drop, pick and saw tests and hinge attack resistance, and it’s a California DOJ approved firearm safety device.

That’s real security against kids, visitors and a thief with a screwdriver. Against a thief with time and a pry bar, the answer is the same as for any 50-pound box: don’t let them carry it off. Run the included security cable around a bed frame or bolt the safe to the floor or a closet wall through the pre-drilled holes. I’d do one or the other on day one.

Why There’s No Fire Rating

Hornady doesn’t give the AR Gunlocker a fire rating, and the steel explains why. Work out the outside surface and the weight of 16-gauge steel, and the shell alone comes to about 34 pounds. That’s 69% of the 50-pound weight on the product page. The rest is the lid hardware, lugs, electronics and foam.

Chart of how much of the Hornady AR Gunlocker's weight is steel shell compared with two fire-rated gun safes

A fire-rated safe is mostly something else. In our reviews, the steel shell is 45% of a Sports Afield Domain 20 and 38% of a Liberty Centurion 24; the rest of their weight is largely fireboard. The Gunlocker has foam where those safes have gypsum, so treat it as a locker. If fire protection matters, the guns that live in it day to day should go back into a fire-rated safe when you’re away, and our gun safe fire ratings guide explains what to look for.

Mounting It: Under the Bed, Closet or Vehicle

The Gunlocker mounts flat, on its side or upright. Laid flat under a bed, the spring-assisted door drops open toward you. In a closet, you can stand it vertically and bolt it to the wall. The manual covers one detail worth knowing: if you mount it vertically or upright, remove the door dampener so the door opens freely, and if it’s upright with the door on top, the lock releases but you have to lift the door yourself.

It also travels well. Laid in a truck bed or cabled to a hotel bed frame, it keeps rifles locked up on the road, and the included rubber pads stop it sliding on hard floors. The gas struts that slow the door are the one design choice I’d change, because they can get in the way when you’re loading the box. A closed steel box with foam inside holds moisture, so a small dehumidifier canister is worth adding; our gun safe dehumidifier picks include options that fit.

The Warranty: One Year, and No Spare Keys

Hornady’s RAPiD Safe limited warranty, printed in the owner’s manual, covers defects in workmanship or materials for one (1) year from the date of purchase. It’s not transferable, so it covers the original owner only. And the manual is blunt about lost keys: for your security, Hornady will not send replacement keys.

That’s the weakest warranty of any safe we’ve reviewed. Liberty and Sports Afield cover their safes for life. Register the Gunlocker the day it arrives, and test every way in during the first year while the warranty still covers it. Our gun safe warranty comparison covers the other brands.

Standard vs XL

The XL 98191 adds 3.25 inches of depth and one gun slot: three long guns instead of two, 8.75 inches deep inside, and 62 pounds. Everything else, from the lock to the 40.5-inch length limit, is the same. Buy the XL if you want two rifles with optics and lights mounted, or a rifle and a shotgun with room for a pistol and ammo. On October 24, 2026, Brownells actually listed the XL at $449.99, less than its own price for the standard model, so check before you assume the bigger box costs more.

AR Gunlocker vs Vaultek RS Slider and Hornady Ready Vault

Vaultek’s RS Slider is the closest rival for an AR by the bed. It lists at $1,199.99 for one to two AR-style rifles plus pistols, with 14-gauge steel to the Gunlocker’s 16. It’s a stronger box at more than twice the Gunlocker’s street price. If RFID access suits you, the Gunlocker does the same job for far less.

If one or two guns isn’t enough, Hornady’s own RAPiD Ready Vault lists at $1,099.99 and holds up to 8 long guns and 14 handguns, with the same RFID access. And if you want fire protection for a few long guns rather than fast access, a narrow fire-rated safe like the one in our Sports Afield Domain 20 review is the better tool.

Who Should NOT Buy the AR Gunlocker

  • Owners of a Mossberg 590A1 or Beretta 1301 Comp. At 41 and 42 inches, they don’t fit.
  • Anyone who wants fire protection. It has no fire rating.
  • Anyone who loses keys. Hornady won’t replace them.
  • Collectors. Two or three guns is the limit. Look at a full-size safe.
  • Anyone who’d pay $585.99. The same box costs $449.99 elsewhere.

Price and Where to Buy

Prices on the standard 98190 ran from $399.99 to $585.99 on October 24, 2026. Among the retailers we trust most, Sportsman’s Guide had it at $449.99, Palmetto State Armory at $453.99, Sportsman’s Warehouse at $459.99 and Brownells at $489.99. The Hornady store asked $585.99, so buying there costs $136 more than Sportsman’s Guide. The card below tracks it live.

Final Verdict

The Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gunlocker does the hard part of home-defense storage well. It keeps a rifle locked, out of sight and a second away, with a tag on your wrist, a code for everyone else and a key for when the power’s out. It fits standard AR carbines and most defensive shotguns, and it travels.

It’s a locker, not a safe: no fire rating, 16-gauge steel and a one-year warranty with no spare keys. Bolt or cable it down, keep it plugged in, check your shotgun’s length, and pay around $450 rather than $585.99. Do that, and it’s the best way I know to keep a rifle by the bed.

FAQ: Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gunlocker

Is the Hornady AR Gunlocker worth it?

Yes, for keeping one or two home-defense long guns locked but within reach. It opens with an RFID tag, a keypad code or a key, and it fits standard AR carbines. It has no fire rating and only a one-year warranty, and it's worth it at about $449.99, not at the Hornady store's $585.99.

What are the Hornady AR Gunlocker dimensions?

The standard 98190 is 42 x 15.25 x 6.75 in outside and 40.5 x 13.5 x 5.5 in inside. The XL 98191 is the same length and width but 10 in deep outside and 8.75 in deep inside.

Will a shotgun fit in the Hornady AR Gunlocker?

Short defensive shotguns fit if they're 40.5 in or shorter overall. The Remington 870 Tactical at 38.5 in, the Mossberg 590M at 39.5 in and the Benelli M4 at 40 in fit. The Mossberg 590A1 at 41 in and the Beretta 1301 Comp at 42 in do not.

How much does the Hornady AR Gunlocker weigh?

Hornady's product page says 50 lb and its owner's manual says 55 lb for the standard model. The XL weighs 62 lb.

Is the Hornady AR Gunlocker fireproof?

No. Hornady gives it no fire rating. It's a 16-gauge steel locker with foam inside, not a fire safe with fireboard.

How do you open the Hornady AR Gunlocker?

With an RFID tag (up to five: watchband tag, key fob or sticker), a keypad code of 4 to 6 digits, or one of the two barrel keys. On battery power, press any button on the lid first to wake the reader.

What is the Hornady AR Gunlocker warranty?

One year from the date of purchase, for the original owner only. Hornady also states it will not send replacement keys, so store the barrel keys somewhere safe.

What is the difference between the AR Gunlocker and the AR Gunlocker XL?

The XL is 3.25 in deeper and holds three long guns instead of two, at 62 lb. The length, width, lock and RFID system are the same.
