Thermal and the law: check before you hunt

A thermal monocular is a viewing device, not a firearm, and owning one is legal across the United States. Using one to hunt is a different question entirely. Night hunting rules are set state by state, and plenty of states that allow thermal for hogs and coyotes still ban it for deer, or restrict it to private land, or require a permit.

What a Thermal Monocular Actually Does for You

A thermal monocular is the tool you scan with. You walk, you stop, you sweep the field, and when something lights up you decide whether it is worth moving on. That is a completely different job from the thermal scope on your rifle, which exists to put a shot where it belongs once you already know what you are looking at.

Plenty of people buy the scope first and then wonder why hunting with it feels so slow. Scanning through a rifle optic means pointing a loaded gun at everything you want to look at, which is both unsafe and exhausting. A handheld unit fixes that in about five minutes of use.

Here is the honest part. Search for a thermal monocular right now and you will find a wall of $200 units from brands nobody has heard of, all claiming 1,000 yard detection on a 256×192 sensor. I have looked through several of them. At 80 yards on a warm night they show you a smudge, and at 200 yards they show you nothing useful at all. The cheapest unit on this list is around four hundred dollars, and it exists precisely because that is roughly where thermal stops being a toy.

Everything below is currently in production and currently carried by multiple retailers. I dropped three units while building this guide because the manufacturer had quietly discontinued them, even though stock is still sitting on shelves. Buying a discontinued thermal means no firmware updates and no warranty path, so it matters.

This is the unit that made me stop telling people to save up. ATN moved the BlazeSeeker to a 20 mK sensor for the sixth generation, and that number matters more than the pixel count on a budget thermal. Sensitivity is what separates a warm animal from a warm rock on a humid night.

I ran one over four nights on a friend’s place in east Texas, mostly walking fence lines and glassing cut fields. Hogs at 150 yards were obvious. At 250 I could tell something was there and roughly how big, but calling it a hog rather than a cow took closing distance. That is the 256 sensor doing what 256 sensors do, and no marketing copy changes it.

Watch the generation when you buy. ATN’s older BlazeSeeker is a 35 mK unit and it is still floating around at similar money. The one you want says 6 or Gen 6 on the box, and the specification sheet should read 20 mK.

Best For: a first thermal for hog and predator work inside 200 yards, or a backup scanner you are not frightened of dropping.

The Taipan is the one I put in a new hunter’s hands. That 10mm lens gives a genuinely wide picture, and a wide picture is what you want when you have not yet learned to read a thermal image. Narrow, high magnification units are miserable for beginners because you sweep straight past things.

It runs on a single 18650 you can replace in the dark with cold hands. I got a little over five hours per cell across a week of cool October nights, and carrying two spares in a shirt pocket meant the unit never went down. Sealed-battery thermals cannot do that.

The honest limitation is sensitivity. At below 35 mK it is a step behind the ATN above it, and on heavy dew nights you notice: the image goes flatter and softer than it does on a 20 mK unit. In dry cold it looks great.

Best For: a first thermal where wide scanning and swappable batteries matter more than squeezing out maximum range.

Nocpix put an F0.9 lens on this thing, and that is the spec worth paying attention to. A faster lens lets more energy reach the sensor, which is why the LUMI looks better than its 256×192 count suggests. Against the Taipan on the same field, the LUMI held detail on a coyote at 180 yards where the AGM had already gone mushy.

It is small. Properly small, the kind of small that lives in a jacket pocket and comes out when a dog starts barking at two in the morning. The battery accepts either polarity, which sounds like a gimmick until you are fumbling a cell in the dark with gloves on.

The trade is ergonomic. Small bodies mean small buttons, and the eyecup is fine rather than good. For an hour of scanning it is comfortable enough. For a full night pressed to your eye, the bigger units are nicer.

Best For: anyone who wants thermal on them all the time rather than only on planned hunts.

If you take one number from this guide, take this one: the step from a 256 sensor to a 384 sensor buys you identification range, and identification range is what decides whether you pull the trigger. On the same stand on the same night, the 10-256 told me something was in the tree line at 220 yards. The 15-384 told me it was a sow with pigs.

Under $800 for that capability is the best value on this page. It keeps the swappable 18650 and the menu layout from the cheaper Taipans, so if you started on a 10-256 you will be at home immediately.

You give up field of view. The 15mm lens shows you less sky at once than the 10mm, so scanning is a slower, more deliberate job. That is the trade every time you go longer, on every brand here.

Best For: the hunter who has outgrown a 256 unit and wants real identification distance without spending four figures.

RIX is not a household name yet, and the Pocket K3 is the reason that will change. It puts the same 384×288 sensor and 15mm lens as much larger units into something you can genuinely forget is in your coat.

I have handed this one to more non-hunters than anything else here. It looks like a phone, it turns on fast, and people immediately understand what they are seeing. As a tool for checking livestock or walking a property line at night it is hard to beat at the money.

One caution. RIX publishes less detail than Pulsar or AGM, and their dealer network is thinner, so warranty service is a slower conversation. Buy it from a retailer you already trust rather than the cheapest listing you find.

Best For: a 384 sensor you will actually carry every day, and for handing to people who have never used thermal.

This is the one I would buy with my own money. Pulsar built the Axion XQ19 around a magnesium shell instead of polymer, and at 8.8 ounces with the battery installed it disappears in a chest pocket.

Sensitivity is where it earns the top spot. Under 18 mK is genuinely excellent, and it shows on the nights that matter: heavy dew, light fog, a few degrees of temperature spread between an animal and the wet ground behind it. I picked up a bedded coyote at just over 400 yards on a damp November morning, which is not something the 256 units on this page will do.

The pixel pitch is the one place it shows its age. Pulsar used 17 micron pixels here rather than the 12 micron sensors on newer units, which costs some fine detail at distance. In the field, better sensitivity on a 17 micron sensor beats worse sensitivity on a 12 micron one nearly every time.

Battery is internal. There is no swapping a cell at midnight, so carry a USB-C power bank if you are out all night. That is my only real complaint.

Best For: most people, most of the time. If you want one thermal monocular and you are not rangefinding, buy this.

The Sidekick exists for hands-free work. The mini rail is part of the body, so it goes on a helmet or headset without a bridge or an adapter plate, and at that point you are walking with both hands free and a thermal picture in front of one eye.

Running on CR123A cells is smarter than it sounds. They sit on the shelf for years, they work when it is cold, and you can buy them at any sporting goods counter in America. The included extension takes two cells, or a single rechargeable 16650 if you would rather.

Read this part carefully before you buy: on the 320 models the focus is fixed and set to infinity. Armasight’s own manual says the front focus ring is fitted to the 640 models only. That is fine for scanning a field and poor for looking at something twenty feet away. Nobody mentions it in the listings, and it is the single most important thing to know about this unit.

Best For: hands-free walking and helmet use, and anyone who wants a thermal that runs on batteries from the corner store.

This is the value play at the top of the market. A 640 class sensor with a laser rangefinder, at a price that Pulsar charges for a 384 without one. On image quality alone it is the best thing here under three thousand dollars.

Side by side with the Telos on the same tree line, the Vista resolved individual animals in a group where the Telos showed a warm mass. That is the 640 sensor doing its job. If you are trying to count pigs before you commit, this is the one.

The risk is brand history. Nocpix has not been around as long as Pulsar, the accessory ecosystem is thinner, and nobody knows what one is worth used in five years. Support has got noticeably better over the last two years, but you are buying on current value rather than a long track record.

The Oryx is a scanning tool for open country. A 640×480 sensor at 12 micron with a published detection range past 1950 yards, which in practice means you stand on a rise and clear a whole valley without walking it.

I used one glassing wheat stubble in west Texas and picked up hogs working a fence at something over 900 yards. Not identified, just clearly there and clearly worth the walk. Three hours of stalking saved by two minutes of scanning is the entire argument for a unit like this.

The narrow view is the cost. At 12.5 degrees you see far less at once than the Axion’s 19.5, so sweeping a field is slower and more methodical. In thick timber that is a real handicap, and I would take the Axion into the woods every time.

If the Oryx is the right sensor in the wrong shape for you, this is the answer. Pulsar put a 640 core and a rangefinder into the compact Axion body, so you get the image quality of the big unit in something you can run one-handed while holding a rifle in the other.

That one-handed part is not a small thing. Walking a fence line with a rifle slung and a thermal in your off hand is how most hog hunting actually happens, and a 17 ounce unit gets old fast.

You pay for the packaging. This is the most expensive unit on the page and the battery is smaller than the Oryx’s, so a full night means carrying power. For most people the Axion XQ19 at a third of the price is the smarter buy, and I would not talk anyone out of that.

Detection Range Is Not What You Think It Is

Every thermal on this page advertises a detection range, and every one of those numbers is honest and misleading at the same time. Detection means the sensor registers that something warm is out there. It does not mean you can tell what it is.

Run the Oryx through that. Pulsar publishes 1950 yards of detection, which is real. Recognition lands somewhere near 650 yards and identification near 325. Those are the numbers that decide whether you take a shot, and they are the ones you should be shopping on.

Do the same arithmetic on a $200 unit claiming 1,000 yards and you get identification at under 170 yards, assuming the claim was honest to begin with. That is the whole reason the cheap ones disappoint.

NETD: The Number That Matters Most, and Why You Cannot Compare It

NETD is measured in millikelvin and it describes the smallest temperature difference the sensor can resolve. Lower is better. A 20 mK sensor separates an animal from wet ground that is only slightly cooler; a 50 mK sensor needs a bigger gap before anything shows.

This is why sensitivity beats pixel count on a budget. A 256×192 sensor at 20 mK gives a more useful picture on a humid night than a 384×288 at 40 mK, because resolution only helps once there is contrast to resolve.

Now the part that will save you money. NETD figures are not comparable between manufacturers, and sometimes not even within one manufacturer’s own spec sheet. Pulsar publishes two different values on the same page. The Axion XQ19 lists NETD under 18 mK. The Oryx XG35, which costs nearly three times as much and has a far better sensor, lists NETD under 40 mK and a separate sNETD under 20 mK.

Read those two figures naively and you would conclude the cheap Axion is more sensitive than the expensive Oryx. It is not. They are measured differently. Compare like with like, compare within a single brand’s range where you can, and treat any cross-brand NETD comparison as a rough guide rather than a fact.

Field of View Decides How Fast You Can Scan

Field of view is the spec nobody puts on the front of the box, and it changes how a thermal feels more than anything except sensitivity. A wide view means you sweep a tree line in three passes. A narrow one means eight passes and a much better chance of missing something.

How I Tested These

Everything here was used the way you would use it: walking, glassing, and trying to work out whether a warm shape was worth moving on. Most of the field time was hog and predator work in Texas and Oklahoma across autumn and winter nights, with temperatures from the low thirties to the mid sixties and humidity all over the place.

I care about three things in that order. Can it find an animal on a bad night, meaning damp and with little temperature spread. Can it tell me what the animal is at a distance where I could act on it. Does it still work at hour five with cold hands.

Specifications in this guide come from the manufacturers’ own published data. Where a maker does not publish a figure, I have left it out rather than repeat a retailer’s number, because retailer listings get specs wrong constantly. Two units I originally planned to include were dropped after I found the manufacturer had discontinued them, and a third went because the only images available came from dealers rather than the maker.

Who Should Not Buy a Thermal Monocular

  • The hunter who only hunts daylight deer. You will use it twice and then it sits in a drawer. Spend the money on glass you look through every weekend.
  • Anyone in a state that bans thermal for their quarry. Check first. A monocular you cannot legally use on the animal you hunt is an expensive novelty.
  • The shooter who needs to identify at distance on a budget. If your honest need is identification past 300 yards, a $500 unit will not do it. Save for a 384 or 640 rather than buying twice.
  • Anyone expecting to see through anything. Thermal does not see through walls, glass or heavy brush. Glass is a mirror to it, and a branch in front of an animal hides that part of the animal.

The Bottom Line

For most people the Pulsar Axion XQ19 is the right answer. Under 18 mK of sensitivity, a magnesium body, 8.8 ounces, and a wide enough view to scan quickly. It does the job in timber and in fields and it does not feel like a compromise anywhere.

On a tighter budget the ATN BlazeSeeker 6 207 is the cheapest thermal here I would genuinely carry, as long as you buy the Gen 6 and keep your expectations inside 200 yards. Step up to the AGM Taipan V2 15-384 if you can find another few hundred dollars, because the 384 sensor is where identification range appears.
