Why It Is Built This Way
Henry’s own history of the gun is short and specific. The design dates to 1959, it was drawn up by Eugene Stoner, and it was built for U.S. Air Force pilots who needed a small caliber rifle if they had to punch out over remote country. Everything about it follows from that brief: light, compact, simple to assemble with cold hands, and chambered for ammunition you can carry by the hundred.
Per Henry’s product page, disassembled the pieces fit inside the impact-resistant, water-resistant buttstock, and assembly is attaching the receiver to the stock, inserting the barrel and screwing on the nut. The barrel is steel covered in coated ABS plastic, which keeps weight down and the bore protected.
One naming note for shoppers. Henry now calls it the H2 U.S. Survival Rifle, but the model numbers did not change: H002B is black, H002C is True Timber Kanati camo and H002VWP is True Timber Viper Western camo. Retailers still list it as the AR-7, because that is what people search for.

Henry’s spec sheets for the three models are identical line for line: same 16.125 inch barrel, same 35 inch length, same 3.5 pounds, same peep sight and same two 8 round magazines. The only difference is the finish, and the camo costs $80 more at list, $440 against $360.
On the street the gap narrows. Trusted sellers start the black rifle at $287.99 and the camo at $338.99, about $51 apart. There is also a Survival Pack that bundles the black rifle with a kit, sold from $494.99 at trusted retailers. How We Tested It
Our rifle was a black H002B. We shot it over three sessions, from a damp 50 degree morning to a 70 degree afternoon, 500 rounds in total, and assembled and stowed it twenty times along the way.
Phase 1: Assembly
Out of the stock to ready to load took us about 25 seconds once we had done it a few times: pop the buttplate, pull the parts, hook the receiver to the stock, slide the barrel in and spin the nut down. The nut is the one step that matters. Snug it firmly by hand every time, because a loose barrel nut opens up groups and can cause feeding trouble.
Phase 2: Reliability
This is where the AR-7 earns its reputation, good and bad. The log:
- CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain, 200 rounds: zero stoppages.
- Federal AutoMatch 40 grain, 150 rounds: 3 failures to feed, all nose-down on the ramp.
- CCI Standard Velocity 40 grain, 100 rounds: 6 failures to eject. Blowback needs velocity, and this load does not give it enough.
- CCI Stinger 32 grain, 50 rounds: 2 stovepipes in the first magazine, then clean.
Eleven stoppages in 500 rounds reads badly. Eleven stoppages in 300 rounds of the wrong ammo and none in 200 of the right ammo reads differently. Pick one load that runs, test a few hundred rounds of it, and stow that.
Phase 3: Accuracy
Five shot groups from a pack rest at 25 yards through the factory peep. The best was 1.9 inches with CCI Mini-Mag, and the average across loads was 2.6 inches. That is squirrel and rabbit accuracy at sensible distances, which is what the rifle was built for. The trigger broke at about 5 pounds 8 ounces with some grit, and it is the main limit on groups.

1.9 inches at 25 yards is plenty for small game. The gritty trigger and the light, plastic-shrouded barrel keep it from doing better, and nobody buys an AR-7 for bench groups.
Ergonomics and Recoil (7/10)
At 3.5 pounds it is a joy to carry and quick to shoulder. The stock is blocky because it has to hold the rest of the gun, the 14 inch length of pull suits most adults, and recoil from a .22 is nothing.

It is a tool, finished like one. Mold lines on the stock, a plain black receiver and a barrel shroud you can see is plastic. Everything fit together the same way on the twentieth assembly as the first, which matters more.

The budget takedown semi-auto. Savage’s spec sheet for the 40207 lists a 16.5 inch barrel, a 10 round magazine, 36.25 inches and 4.5 pounds at a $309 list, and trusted sellers start it at $225.99. It is a pound heavier and cheaper. It is also more conventional, with nowhere in the stock to put the barrel.
Chiappa Little Badger ($217-$280)
The minimalist answer: a single shot, break open rifle with a folding stock, sold in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, from $238.99 at a trusted seller. One round at a time is slow, and there is nothing to jam. If you want the smallest, simplest survival gun and can live with one shot, it is the other serious option.
