Quick Take

The CZ P-09 is a big, soft shooting, hammer fired 9mm with a double action first shot, a light single action after that, and 19 rounds in the full size gun. CZ now sells it as the P-09 Nocturne, in an F full size and a C compact, and our full size ran 800 rounds with one hiccup in the first box.

The detail worth knowing before you choose: CZ lists the full size and the compact at the same $649, and trusted retailers sell both configurations at the same price too. The compact is only 3.2 ounces lighter, 0.9 inches shorter and 0.5 inches lower, and it is exactly as wide. For most people the full size is the better buy at the same money.

Best For: Home defense, duty style carry and range shooters who want a DA/SA hammer gun with a big magazine and a manual safety or decocker. Not for deep concealment, and not for anyone who wants a striker trigger.

Firearm Scorecard
Reliability One failure to feed in 800 rounds, in the first box. 9/10
Value 19+1 and a real DA/SA for under $600 at trusted sellers. 9/10

Features Swappable safety or decocker, luminescent sights, optics ready. 9/10
Ergonomics Fills the hand, but thick for carry and a heavy first pull. 7/10
Fit & Finish Tight, plain and tough. Nothing flashy, nothing loose. 8/10
OVERALL SCORE 8.4/10

F or C: Same Price, Smaller Difference Than You Think

CZ’s product pages for the P-09 F Nocturne and the P-09 C Nocturne give both a $649 list price and publish full tech specs for every variant. Put them side by side:

The compact gives up four rounds and 0.8 inches of barrel to save 3.2 ounces and half an inch of grip height. The width is identical. If the reason you are shopping a compact is to hide it, the 1.5 inch width is the part that prints, and the C does not change it. The smart use of the C is a shorter grip for smaller hands.

The SR models are the interesting ones. The C SR puts the full size 4.5 inch barrel, threaded 1/2 x 28, on the compact grip, with a 17 round magazine. The threading adds $50 at list.

Nocturne or the Original P-09

The original P-09, SKU 91620, still turns up for less than the Nocturne, from about $454 at retailers we track. CZ’s current product pages show only the Nocturne, which CZ describes as the service size pistol “now with Optics-Ready interface,” with new grip texturing and luminescent or tritium sights. If you want to mount a red dot later, buy the Nocturne. If you never will, a new original P-09 at a good price is the same basic pistol.

How We Tested It

Our gun was a P-09 F Nocturne, 91670, with two 19 round magazines. We shot it over four sessions at an outdoor range between 55 and 78 degrees, 800 rounds in total, and ran it with both the safety levers and the decocking levers fitted.

Phase 1: Break-In and the Lever Swap

The first 200 rounds were mostly Federal American Eagle 115 grain FMJ, with a magazine of Federal HST 147 grain loaded early to see how a new gun fed a heavy hollow point. The gun ships set up one way, and CZ makes the safety and decocking levers user swappable, so after the first session we swapped to the decocker. It is a small parts job, done at the bench with the manual open, and it changes the gun’s personality. With the decocker, you carry hammer down and start every string with the double action pull.

Phase 2: Reliability

One stoppage in 800 rounds. At round 34, a Federal HST 147 grain nosed into the feed ramp and needed a tap-rack. It never happened again, including another 100 rounds of the same load later on. Ejection was steady, landing brass about five feet out at four o’clock, and the slide locked back on every empty magazine.

Phase 3: Accuracy

Five shot groups from a rest, single action. At 15 yards the best was 1.6 inches with Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P, and the average across loads was 2.2 inches. At 25 yards the average opened to 3.1 inches. Starting each group from double action added about half an inch at 15 yards, which is the price of that 9.9 pound first pull.

CZ rates the trigger at 4.7 pounds single action and 9.9 double action with a 0.3 inch reset, and ours matched closely on the gauge. The single action is crisp with a short, positive reset. The double action is long and smooth, and heavy.

Ammunition Log

  • Federal American Eagle 115 gr FMJ: 300 rounds
  • Winchester USA 124 gr FMJ: 200 rounds
  • Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ: 100 rounds
  • Federal HST 147 gr JHP: 100 rounds
  • Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P: 50 rounds
  • Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr FlexLock: 50 rounds

What This Means for You

  • Safety or decocker: Decide how you want to carry it, then set the levers once and train with that.
  • Double action practice: Dry fire the 9.9 pound first pull until it stops pulling your shots low.
  • Ammo preference: 124 grain loads shot best. It fed everything after the first box.
  • Accuracy expectation: About 2 inches at 15 yards in single action with good ammo.
CZ P-09 C Nocturne compact 9mm pistol, right side profile

Performance Results

Reliability (9/10)

One stoppage, early, with a heavy hollow point, then 766 clean rounds including more of the same load. That is a pistol you can trust once it has a box or two through it.

Accuracy (8/10)

1.6 inches at 15 yards in single action is very good for a service pistol. The cold hammer forged barrel does its part. The double action first shot is where you give accuracy away, and that is a training problem more than a pistol problem.

Ergonomics and Recoil (7/10)

The grip fills a large hand completely, and at 29.3 ounces the full size makes 9mm feel soft. But a 1.5 inch wide grip is thick, and the full size is a lot of pistol to carry. Smaller hands will prefer the shorter C grip.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)

Slide to frame fit was tight with no play, the nitride finish held up without holster wear after four sessions, and the grip texture stayed grippy with sweaty hands. It is a plain, serious looking gun and it feels built to take abuse.

If you are torn between a DA/SA hammer gun and a striker gun, our striker fired vs hammer fired guide lays out the trade. The short version: the P-09’s double action first pull is heavier and longer than any striker, and in exchange you get a hammer you can see and thumb, and a decocker.

How It Compares

Our best CZ pistols ranking covers the family, and best 9mm pistols covers the field.

CZ P-10 C ($417-$470)

CZ’s own striker fired compact, from $416.99 at a trusted seller, over $100 less than a P-09 Nocturne. If you prefer a consistent striker pull every time, it is the obvious choice from the same maker. Our CZ P-10 C review has the details.

Verdict: The P-10 C is the striker choice, the PX4 is the pricier DA/SA alternative and the Canik is the budget pick. The P-09 is the one with 19 rounds, a hammer and a swappable safety or decocker for under $600 at trusted sellers. CZ’s older compact DA/SA, the P-07, is covered in our CZ P-07 review.

Leave the trigger alone at first. The single action is already good, and the double action gets easier with dry fire, not springs. Our best 9mm ammo guide covers what to carry in it.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • First shot pulls low: The 9.9 pound double action pull. Dry fire it, or run it with the safety levers and carry cocked and locked.
  • Early feeding hiccups: Ours had one with a 147 grain hollow point in the first box, then none. Put 200 rounds through it before carrying.
  • Too wide to conceal: The compact is the same 1.5 inches wide. If concealment is the priority, look at a slimmer gun.
  • Wrong lever setup: The levers are user swappable. Follow CZ’s manual and function check afterward.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

  • Deep concealment carriers: Even the compact is 1.5 inches wide. A slim single stack or a micro compact like the Sig P365 hides far better.
  • Shooters who want a striker trigger: The CZ P-10 C gives you the same maker with a consistent pull.
  • Buyers on a tight budget: The Canik TP9SF saves over $100 with a full size frame and 18 rounds.
  • Anyone who hates a heavy first pull: A 9.9 pound double action is heavy. Run it cocked and locked with the safety levers, or buy a striker gun.

Final Verdict

The CZ P-09 Nocturne is a lot of pistol for the money: 19 rounds, a cold hammer forged barrel, a crisp single action, luminescent sights, an optics ready slide and the choice of a manual safety or a decocker. Ours ran 800 rounds with one early hiccup and shot 1.6 inch groups at 15 yards.

Pick the size carefully, because CZ charges the same for both. The compact saves 3.2 ounces and half an inch of height, and it does not get any thinner. For most buyers the full size F is the better pistol at the same price.

Final Score: 8.4/10. A big, soft shooting DA/SA with a price that ignores its size.

FAQ: CZ P-09

What is the difference between the CZ P-09 F and C Nocturne?

Size, not price. CZ lists both at $649. The F has a 4.5 inch barrel, 19+1 capacity and weighs 29.3 ounces; the C has a 3.7 inch barrel, 15+1 and weighs 26.1 ounces. Both are 1.5 inches wide.

Does the CZ P-09 have a safety or a decocker?

Either. CZ makes the safety and decocking levers user swappable, so you can set it up as a manual safety gun or a decocker gun. Both setups keep the firing pin block.

What is the CZ P-09 trigger pull?

CZ rates it at 4.7 pounds single action and 9.9 pounds double action, with a 0.3 inch reset. Ours measured close to that. The single action is crisp; the double action is long and heavy.

Is the CZ P-09 Nocturne optics ready?

Yes. CZ describes the Nocturne as the service size pistol now with an optics ready interface. Check that your red dot's footprint fits before you buy one for it.

How accurate is the CZ P-09?

Our P-09 F Nocturne shot a best five shot group of 1.6 inches at 15 yards in single action with Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P, and averaged 2.2 inches across loads.

How many rounds does the CZ P-09 hold?

The F holds 19+1 and the C holds 15+1, with 10 round versions of both. The threaded SR models hold 21+1 (F) and 17+1 (C).
