Review: Browning Buck Mark – The Rimfire That Outshoots Its Price Tag

Our Rating: 8.5/10

Browning has been building the Buck Mark since 1985 and the basic recipe has barely moved. A machined aluminum receiver, a barrel that bolts to it rather than riding a slide, and a grip angle borrowed from a gun John Browning designed before the First World War. Forty years on, it still shoots better than almost anything at the price.

Quick Take

The Buck Mark is a target pistol that happens to be affordable, not a cheap pistol that happens to be accurate. That distinction shows up the moment you put it on sandbags. The barrel is fixed to the receiver rather than reciprocating, the sight radius is a full 8 inches, and the sights that come in the box are adjustable target sights rather than a molded blade you are expected to replace.

What you give up is convenience. Field stripping is fine. Putting it back together is where Buck Mark owners lose an afternoon, and no amount of familiarity makes it as quick as dropping a Ruger Mark IV back together. You also give up the optic cut that every new rimfire arrives with now, unless you step up to a Contour or Vision variant.

Against $419.99 street, the trade is worth making. There is nothing else at that money that shoots this well out of the box.

Best For: Target shooters, small game hunters and anyone teaching new shooters who wants accuracy before gadgets. Skip it if you want a red dot on day one without paying for a Contour, or if a fiddly reassembly is going to stop you cleaning the gun.

OVERALL SCORE 8.5/10

Why Browning Built It This Way

Almost every other rimfire pistol is a scaled down centerfire. Slide on top, barrel inside it, everything moving together. Browning went the other way. On a Buck Mark the barrel is bolted rigidly to the top of the receiver and only a small internal bolt reciprocates underneath it, which is why the sights stay welded to a barrel that never moves.

That single decision explains the gun. Fixed barrel means the front sight never shifts relative to the bore. It also means the pistol carries its weight low and forward, which is why 34 oz on a rimfire feels planted rather than muzzle heavy.

The grip angle came from the Colt Woodsman, another John Browning design, and it is the part people notice first. Bring the gun up with your eyes closed and the sights are already close to aligned. Ruger’s Mark series uses a Luger derived angle that some shooters prefer and others fight for years.

The cost of the fixed barrel design is the takedown. Because the barrel bolts on, servicing the internals means removing fasteners rather than pressing a lever, and reassembly asks you to compress a mainspring while aligning parts you cannot see.

Buck Mark vs the Competition

Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite. The Mark IV solved the reassembly problem outright with a one button takedown, and that alone wins it a lot of buyers. The Lite is also considerably lighter. Where the Buck Mark answers is the grip angle and the trigger, which breaks cleaner out of the box. Our Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite review covers that gun in full.

Glock 44. Cheaper at $359.00 in the listings we track, and the argument for it is training crossover rather than accuracy. If your carry gun is a Glock 19 the manual of arms transfers exactly. The Buck Mark outshoots it comfortably. See our Glock 44 review.

SIG P322. Twenty rounds in the magazine against ten, an optic cut as standard, and a lower price. It is the modern answer to the Buck Mark and it wins on features. It does not win on the shooting. Our SIG P322 review has the detail.

The honest summary: if you want features per dollar, buy the SIG. If you want a gun that turns you into a better pistol shot, buy the Browning.

Testing Protocol

We put 1,200 rounds through a Camper UFX across four range sessions between June and August, all outdoors, with temperatures from 61F on the first morning to 94F on the last. Shooting was at 25 yards from a sandbag rest for group work and offhand at 15 yards for everything else. The gun arrived with one magazine and we added two more, all Browning factory units.

Ammunition Used

  • CCI Standard Velocity 40gr LRN – 400 rounds
  • CCI Mini-Mag 40gr CPRN – 300 rounds
  • Federal Automatch 40gr LRN – 300 rounds
  • SK Rifle Match 40gr – 100 rounds
  • Remington Golden Bullet 36gr bulk – 100 rounds

Break-In, Rounds 1 to 200

Out of the rug the gun was dry enough that the first fifty rounds felt gritty on the bolt. Two failures to fully cycle came in the first magazine of Remington bulk, both stovepipes. A drop of oil on the bolt rails and the gun settled. Nothing failed on CCI at any point in break-in.

Reliability, Rounds 200 to 900

Seven hundred rounds without cleaning produced four malfunctions in total, and every one of them came from the Remington bulk. Three failures to eject and one failure to feed, all past the 600 round mark when the chamber had a visible carbon ring. CCI Standard Velocity, Mini-Mag, Automatch and SK ran clean through the same period with zero stoppages.

That pattern is worth understanding rather than treating as a fault. A blowback rimfire needs the case to seal and the bolt to be pushed hard enough, and cheap bulk ammunition with soft loading and dirty powder gives you less of both as fouling accumulates. Feed it CCI and the gun is boring in the best sense.

The magazines were the other friction point. Loading round ten takes a genuinely firm thumb and the follower button helps but does not solve it. After a few hundred loads the springs eased.

Accuracy, Rounds 900 to 1,200

Five shot groups at 25 yards off sandbags, best three of five strings recorded for each load:

  • SK Rifle Match 40gr: 0.78 inches
  • CCI Standard Velocity 40gr: 0.94 inches
  • CCI Mini-Mag 40gr: 1.21 inches
  • Federal Automatch 40gr: 1.44 inches
  • Remington Golden Bullet 36gr: 2.30 inches

Sub inch at 25 yards from a $420 pistol is the whole argument for this gun. The spread between match ammunition and bulk is also wider than on most rimfires we shoot, which tells you the gun is accurate enough to show you exactly how bad your ammunition is.

The Variants, and What Each One Costs

Buck Mark is a family rather than a model, and Browning’s own line-up does not make that obvious. We track 308 Buck Mark listings across the retailers in our feed, which is enough to show what each variant actually sells for rather than what Browning lists it at. In-stock ranges when we checked:

VariantStreet rangeWhat it is
Micro Bull$309.99 to $689.994 inch bull barrel, the compact one
Camper$319.99 to $559.995.5 inch tapered bull, the classic
Black Label URX$349.99 to $559.99Composite frame, lighter
Standard$399.99 to $649.99The base gun, slab sided barrel
Medallion$409.99 to $849.99Rosewood grips, dressed up
Field Target$420.00 to $819.99Heavier barrel, target sights
Plus$471.99 to $949.99Upgraded grips and finishes
Practical URX$479.99 to $569.00Slab barrel with target sights
Contour$509.99 to $700.00Contoured barrel, optic ready
Hunter$549.99 to $819.997.25 inch barrel, hunting setup
Lite$649.99 to $659.99Alloy sleeved barrel, lightest
Vision$879.99 to $949.99Full target build, laser package

Two things fall out of that table. The Camper and the Micro Bull are the value picks and everything above them is paying for cosmetics or a longer barrel. And the spread inside a single variant is enormous, because the same Camper sits at $319.99 at one retailer and $559.99 at another on the same day. Buying a Buck Mark without comparing retailers is how people pay $200 more than they needed to.

Common Problems and Fixes

Reassembly after cleaning. This is the complaint that defines the gun. Getting the mainspring housing back in while aligning the sear and the bolt takes patience the first several times. The trick most owners land on is to hold the pistol upside down so gravity keeps the internals seated, and to seat the housing before the pin rather than after. Watch it done once and it stops being frightening.

Rear sight screws backing out. The Pro-Target rear sight is adjustable and the adjustment screws will walk under a few hundred rounds of vibration. A drop of blue threadlocker on the base screws when the gun is new saves a frustrating session later.

Failures to eject on bulk ammunition. Almost always fouling rather than the gun. The chamber and the bolt face carry the carbon and a rimfire chamber brush plus a patch fixes it. If it persists on clean, switch to CCI and see whether the problem walks away.

Stiff magazines from new. Expected and temporary. Load them to capacity and leave them loaded for a week or two, then shoot them.

Upgrades Worth Buying

Spare magazines first, and buy Browning factory ones. Aftermarket rimfire magazines are the most common cause of a rimfire that suddenly stops working, and the saving is not worth it.

After that, a rail. The Camper has no optic cut, so mounting a red dot means a scope base that clamps to the barrel top. Browning and several aftermarket makers sell them, and because the barrel is fixed the optic stays zeroed properly, which is not true of every rimfire conversion.

Beyond that the honest advice is ammunition rather than parts. The accuracy table above shows a 1.5 inch spread between the best and worst load at 25 yards. No aftermarket component will buy you that much. Our best .22 LR ammo guide covers what is worth feeding it.

Who Should Not Buy One

If you want a red dot from day one and you are not buying a Contour, look elsewhere. Bolting a base to the barrel works but it sits the optic high and it costs money the SIG P322 does not ask for.

If the pistol is meant to be a training understudy for a striker fired carry gun, the Glock 44 does that job and the Buck Mark does not. Different controls, different trigger, different grip angle.

And if you know yourself well enough to admit that a gun which is annoying to reassemble will end up uncleaned in a safe, buy the Ruger Mark IV instead. A clean Mark IV beats a filthy Buck Mark every time.

Final Verdict

Forty years on, the Buck Mark still does the thing it was built to do better than guns designed decades later. Sub inch groups at 25 yards with match ammunition, a grip angle that flatters bad technique, and adjustable target sights in the box, all for $419.99 against a $499.99 MSRP.

It is not the modern choice. It has no optic cut at this price, ten rounds where rivals give twenty, and a reassembly procedure that has annoyed owners since the Reagan administration. Every one of those is a real cost.

None of them change the shooting. Put a Buck Mark and a $420 competitor on the same bench with the same ammunition and the Browning wins, which is what a target pistol is for. Buy the Camper or the Micro Bull, feed it CCI, and learn to put it back together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Browning Buck Mark accurate?

Yes, and it is the reason to buy one. Off sandbags at 25 yards our Camper UFX put five shots into 0.78 inches with SK Rifle Match and 0.94 inches with CCI Standard Velocity. The barrel is bolted to the receiver rather than reciprocating in a slide, so the sights never move relative to the bore, and the sight radius is a full 8 inches.

How much does a Browning Buck Mark cost?

MSRP on the Camper UFX is $499.99 and the cheapest listing at a major retailer we track was $419.99 at Sportsman Warehouse. Across the whole family the in-stock spread runs from about $310 for a Micro Bull up to $949.99 for a Vision, so the variant you pick matters more than the retailer discount.

Why is the Buck Mark so hard to put back together?

Because the barrel bolts to the receiver instead of riding a slide, servicing the internals means removing fasteners and then compressing the mainspring housing back into place while parts you cannot see line up. Holding the pistol upside down so gravity keeps the internals seated, and seating the housing before the pin, is what most owners settle on.

What ammo works best in a Buck Mark?

CCI. Over 1,200 rounds every malfunction we had came from Remington Golden Bullet bulk, four in total and all past the 600 round mark once a carbon ring had built in the chamber. CCI Standard Velocity, Mini-Mag, Federal Automatch and SK Rifle Match ran with no stoppages at all.

Buck Mark or Ruger Mark IV?

The Ruger wins on takedown, since its one button system removes the single biggest complaint about the Browning. The Buck Mark wins on grip angle and on the trigger out of the box. If you are honest that an awkward gun will go back in the safe dirty, buy the Ruger, because a clean Mark IV beats a fouled Buck Mark.

Can you mount a red dot on a Buck Mark?

Not directly on a Camper or Micro Bull, which have no optic cut. You mount a scope base that clamps to the top of the barrel instead. Because the barrel is fixed rather than reciprocating, an optic mounted that way holds zero properly. The Contour and Vision variants are the ones set up for optics from the factory.

How many rounds does a Buck Mark magazine hold?

Ten, in a single stack magazine. Loading the tenth round takes a firm thumb when the magazine is new and the follower button helps rather than solves it. The springs ease after a few hundred loads. Buy Browning factory spares rather than aftermarket, since aftermarket rimfire magazines are the most common cause of a rimfire that stops working.

Is the Buck Mark good for a beginner?

For learning to shoot a pistol accurately, it is one of the best choices there is. The grip angle points naturally, recoil is negligible, and the adjustable target sights come fitted. The one caveat is cleaning, since a new shooter can find the reassembly discouraging. Watch it done once before the first strip.
