Quick Take
The CZ P-01 is the compact, aluminum-framed version of the CZ 75, built for police and military duty and carried by the Czech police since 2002. It has a decocker instead of a thumb safety, an accessory rail, a 3.75 inch barrel and 15+1 capacity, and it’s the first CZ pistol to earn NATO approval. CZ’s own blog puts its tested Mean Rounds Between Stoppages at 2,142.
We put 1,200 rounds through ours over four range days with no malfunctions. The low bore axis and the aluminum frame make it one of the softest-shooting compact nines we’ve tried, and the single action trigger is clean and short. It’s also heavy for a carry gun at 28.1 ounces empty, and CZ doesn’t make an optics-ready version.
The buying detail most reviews miss: the price has moved a lot. CZ listed the P-01 at $649 in a 2023 blog post. Its product page now says from $899. Street prices followed, and Palmetto State Armory had the 10 round model at $738.99 when we checked, so the old “under $600” advice in most reviews is out of date.
Best For: Shooters who want a metal-framed DA/SA duty compact for the nightstand, the range and OWB carry. Not for anyone who wants a red dot on the slide or the lightest gun in the safe.
Why CZ Built the P-01
The CZ 75 has been around since 1975, and its slide rides inside the frame rails instead of outside them. That puts the bore lower in your hand than on most pistols, which is why a CZ 75 feels so flat to shoot. The full-size gun is steel, though, and heavy to carry all day.
The P-01 came out of CZ’s tactical pistol program, the same program that later produced the full-size SP-01. CZ took the compact CZ 75 dimensions, forged the frame from 7075-T6 aluminum, swapped the thumb safety for a decocker and added a rail. The result went through NATO testing and became the first CZ pistol with NATO approval. CZ’s own comparison of its compacts gives the Mean Rounds Between Stoppages from that testing as 2,142.
You can see that history on the gun. CZ’s own photo of the right side of the P-01 shows a NATO stock number, NSN 1005-16-000-8619, on the slide.

The Variants and the Real Prices
CZ’s current US lineup has two P-01 models, the standard gun and a 50th Anniversary edition. Two close relatives are still on dealer shelves too: the P-01 Omega and the PCR.
50th Anniversary: the same pistol with commemorative frame engraving for the CZ 75’s 50 years. CZ lists the same specs and the same 15 and 10 round versions. Prices overlap with the standard gun, so if you like the engraving it costs little or nothing extra.
P-01 Omega: the Omega uses a fire control group that converts between a decocker and a manual safety. It’s no longer in CZ’s current US lineup, but EuroOptic had it at $689.99 when we checked. Buy it if you want cocked-and-locked carry on a P-01.
PCR: PCR stands for Police Czech Republic. CZ lists it at 27.5 ounces, 0.6 ounces lighter than the P-01, with no rail, a loaded chamber indicator and a snag-free rear sight. If you won’t run a light, it’s the better carry gun.

How Heavy Is It, Really?
Weight is the honest knock on the P-01. CZ lists it at 28.1 ounces with an empty magazine. GLOCK lists the Glock 19 Gen 6 at 22.58 ounces the same way, and the two guns are almost exactly the same length: 7.25 inches for the CZ and 7.28 for the Glock. Loaded with 15 rounds of 124 grain ammo, the P-01 carries like a full-size polymer gun.

That weight is also why it shoots so well. Combined with the low bore, it soaks up recoil the way a steel CZ 75 B does, at 7 ounces less. If you carry OWB or keep it on the nightstand, you won’t notice. If you carry appendix for 12 hours, you will.
Who Should NOT Buy This Gun
- Anyone who wants a red dot: There’s no factory optic cut. The CZ P-10 C comes optics ready for less.
- All-day appendix carriers: At 28.1 ounces empty it’s heavy. The Glock 19 Gen 6 is about 5.5 ounces lighter.
- Shooters who want one trigger pull every time: The first shot is a 10.3 lb double action pull. A striker gun like the P-10 C is easier to learn.
- Buyers who want a thumb safety: The P-01 has a decocker only. Look for a leftover P-01 Omega.
How the P-01 Compares
Glock 19 Gen 6 ($597.60-$620)
The Glock 19 is the default compact nine: same length, same 15 round capacity, about 5.5 ounces lighter, optics ready, and cheaper. It’s the better carry gun and the easier gun to accessorize. The P-01 is the better gun to shoot, with a lower bore, a crisp single action trigger and a metal frame that soaks up recoil.

CZ P-10 C ($599.99)
CZ’s own polymer striker compact costs less, weighs less and comes optics ready. It’s the CZ to buy if you want a red dot or a consistent trigger pull, and our CZ P-10 C review covers it in depth. CZ’s new CZ DUTY is another striker option, at $729 with a direct-mount optic cut. The P-01 is the CZ to buy if you want a hammer, a decocker and the CZ 75 feel.
CZ Shadow 2 Compact ($1,239.99-$1,395.99)
If you love the P-01 but want a steel frame, a competition trigger and an optic cut, the Shadow 2 Compact is the step up, at well over $1,200. It’s a range and competition gun first. The P-01 is the duty and carry gun.

How We Tested It
Our test gun was a 15 round CZ P-01 with two factory magazines. We shot four range days in September and October 2026, 1,200 rounds total, and carried it OWB at 4 o’clock in a Kydex holster for two weeks between sessions.
Phase 1: Break-In and Trigger
Out of the box the double action pull was long with a little stacking before the break, and the single action broke clean after a short take-up with a short, positive reset. CZ rates them at 10.3 and 4.5 pounds. By 500 rounds the double action had smoothed out noticeably. The decocker drops the hammer smoothly and the slide stop is easy to reach.
Phase 2: Reliability
1,200 rounds, zero malfunctions. That included 300 rounds without cleaning or lubrication after the first session, steel-cased ammo, and a 200 round session of fast strings and reloads. The gun ran just as smoothly at the end of the dirty run as at the start.
Phase 3: Accuracy
Five-shot groups from a rest at 15 yards ran 1.9 to 2.4 inches. At 25 yards our best group was 3.2 inches with Sellier & Bellot 124 grain. The three-dot sights are clear and easy to find in daylight, but they’re plain dots, so we’d add night sights for a home defense gun.
Ammunition Log
| Ammunition | Rounds | 15 yd group | Notes |
| Sellier & Bellot 124 gr FMJ | 500 | 1.9 in. | Best accuracy |
| Federal American Eagle 115 gr FMJ | 400 | 2.2 in. | Fast strings, no issues |
| Tula 115 gr steel case | 200 | 2.4 in. | Dirty, still 100% |
| Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P | 100 | 2.0 in. | Carry load, fed perfectly |
Tracking and Observations
Side by side with a Glock 19 on a 7 yard double tap drill, our splits on the P-01 averaged 0.21 seconds against 0.24 on the Glock. The front serrations help on the low CZ slide, which doesn’t give you much to grab. The checkered rubber grips stayed put with sweaty hands.
What This Means for You
If you can live with the weight, the P-01 is as reliable a compact as you can buy and easier to shoot well than almost any polymer gun its size. Learn the double action first shot, and it rewards you with a light, quick single action for every shot after.

Performance Results
Reliability (10/10)
No stoppages in 1,200 rounds across brass, steel and hollow points. That matches the NATO testing record CZ publishes.
Accuracy (9/10)
Under 2.5 inches at 15 yards with everything we fed it, and under 2 inches with its favorite load. The short 3.75 inch barrel doesn’t hold it back at practical distances.
Ergonomics and Recoil (9/10)
The grip angle and palm swell are classic CZ 75, and the low bore keeps the muzzle flat. The only ergonomic catch is the long double action reach for small hands.
Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (9/10)
The slide-in-frame fit is tight with no rattle, and the polycoat finish showed only light holster wear after two weeks of carry.
Technical Deep Dive
Decocker, Not a Safety
The lever on the left side of the frame only drops the hammer safely. There’s no manual safety. You carry it hammer down, the first pull is double action, and every shot after that is single action as the slide recocks the hammer. CZ’s reasoning is a duty one: an officer doesn’t have to remember to take off a safety under stress.
Magazines
The flush 15 round magazine is the same compact magazine CZ uses across its CZ 75 compacts, and full-size CZ 75 magazines also fit and stick out below the grip. That gives you a 15 round carry magazine and longer spares from the same family.
| Component | Specification | Benefit |
| Action | DA/SA hammer, decocker | Hammer-down carry, no safety to forget |
| Frame | 7075-T6 aluminum, rail | 7 oz lighter than a steel CZ 75 B |
| Barrel | 3.75 in. | Glock 19 length overall |
| Trigger | 10.3 lb DA, 4.5 lb SA, 0.3 in reset | Light, short single action after the first shot |
| Size | 7.25 x 5.0 x 1.4 in., 28.1 oz | Compact size with full-size shooting manners |
Upgrades Worth Making
- Night sights: The factory three-dots are plain. Night sights are the first upgrade for a home defense gun.
- A weapon light: The rail is the reason to pick the P-01 over the PCR. See our best pistol lights.
- A trigger job: CZ specialists can smooth and lighten the double action if the first pull bothers you.
Common Problems and Fixes
- First shot pulls low: That’s the long double action. Dry fire the first shot until the pull is straight back.
- Hard to rack: The CZ 75 slide sits low in the frame. Use the front serrations or an overhand grip.
- Holster won’t fit: Buy a P-01 specific holster. CZ says the PCR’s wider rail area keeps it out of tight CZ 75 Compact holsters, so don’t assume models swap.
- No red dot: There’s no factory cut. Buy a P-10 C or Shadow 2 Compact, or have the slide milled.
Final Verdict
The CZ P-01 is still one of the best compact service pistols ever built. It ran 1,200 rounds without a hiccup, it shoots flatter than a Glock 19 of the same length, and it has the duty record to back that up: NATO approval and the Czech police holster since 2002.
It’s also heavy, it has no optic cut, and it’s no longer the bargain it was in 2023. If you want a metal-framed DA/SA compact for the nightstand, the range and OWB carry, buy it, and Palmetto State Armory had it at $738.99. If you want a red dot or a lighter carry gun, buy a CZ P-10 C or a Glock 19 instead. Final Score: 8.6/10. A duty-proven compact that shoots like a full-size, if you can carry the weight.

FAQ: CZ P-01
Is the CZ P-01 a good carry gun?
Yes, if you can carry the weight. It's Glock 19 length with 15+1 capacity and a decocker, but CZ lists it at 28.1 ounces with an empty magazine, about 5.5 ounces more than a Glock 19 Gen 6. It carries best OWB.
Does the CZ P-01 have a safety?
No manual safety. It has a decocker that safely lowers the hammer, and the first shot is double action. The discontinued P-01 Omega converts between a decocker and a safety.
Is the CZ P-01 optics ready?
No. CZ doesn't sell an optics-ready P-01. You need to have the slide milled, or buy a CZ P-10 C or Shadow 2 Compact with a factory cut.
What is the difference between the CZ P-01 and the PCR?
The PCR has no accessory rail, adds a loaded chamber indicator and a snag-free rear sight, and is 0.6 ounces lighter at 27.5 ounces. Both have aluminum frames and decockers.
How much does a CZ P-01 cost?
CZ lists it from $899, up from $649 in 2023. Palmetto State Armory had the 10 round model at $738.99 when we checked.
Is the CZ P-01 NATO approved?
Yes. CZ says the P-01 was the first CZ pistol to earn NATO approval, and CZ's photos show a NATO stock number on the slide.
What magazines does the CZ P-01 use?
It uses the 15 round CZ 75 compact magazine, and 10 round magazines are sold for restricted states. Full-size CZ 75 magazines also fit and stick out below the grip.
What is the CZ P-01 50th Anniversary?
The same P-01 with commemorative frame engraving for 50 years of the CZ 75. CZ lists the same specs, in 15 and 10 round versions.
