Springfield XD Models Explained: Every Variant Compared (2026)

Last updated October 12, 2026 · By Nick Hall, who tested the XD-M Elite for our review and checked every XD model against Springfield Armory’s catalog

The Springfield XD has been on sale in America since 2001, and the family tree is a mess. There’s the plain XD, then the Mod.2, Mod.3 and Mod.4. There’s the XD-M and the XD-M Elite, the single-stack XD-S, and a hammer-fired oddball called the XD-E. A lot of those are gone. Springfield now prints the word Discontinued across four whole model pages, and plenty of dealer listings haven’t caught up.

I’ve shot XDs since the .40 Service Model was the hot new thing, and I ran 500 rounds through an XD-M Elite for our review. This page sorts the Springfield XD models into what’s current and what isn’t, how the specs differ, which magazines and red dots fit which gun, and which one I’d buy for each job. Every spec below comes from Springfield’s own product pages as they stood in October 2026.

Want the deep test on one gun? Read our Springfield XD-M Elite review. Already own one? Our XD parts and accessories guide covers triggers, sights and lights. This page is the family map.

Springfield XD Family at a Glance

Springfield’s XD series page lists four model families today: the XD Mod.4, the XD-M Elite, the XD-S Mod.2 OSP and the original XD. I’ve split the XD-M Elite into its two frame sizes, which gives you five lines you can order new.

Here are the numbers side by side, current guns first and the discontinued ones a used buyer runs into after them. Each row is one representative SKU, named in the last column. Springfield no longer prints an MSRP for a discontinued gun.

Two things jump out of that table. If you want a new double-stack 9mm XD with a standard-capacity magazine, there is exactly one, the $399 Mod.4. And the XD-M Elite has quietly turned into a 10mm line. The only 9mm Elites still listed are the 10-round California guns.

Pros

  • Optics-ready Mod.4 costs $399
  • 16+1 of 10mm in the Elite
  • Excellent META trigger on the Elite

Cons

  • Standard-capacity 9mm Elite is discontinued
  • Optic plates cost extra
  • Smaller aftermarket than Glock

How the XD Line Got Here

It helps to know the order things arrived in, because the names don’t tell you. First came the XD itself, in 2001. After it Springfield added the XD-M as the upgraded full-size gun and the XD-S as the single-stack carry gun. A Mod.2 facelift reached the 4-inch Service Model in September 2015. Then the hammer-fired XD-E showed up in 2017, and the XD-S got its own Mod.2 update on January 15, 2018.

What I’d call the modern era starts on January 15, 2020, when the XD-M Elite replaced the XD-M. Optics came next: the XD-S Mod.2 OSP in November 2020, the XD-M Elite 3.8-inch Compact OSP in April 2021, then the 10mm Elites in September 2021 and May 2022. The plain XD waited until October 1, 2024 for its optic cut with the Mod.3, and the Mod.4 took over on March 24, 2026. Every new XD since late 2020 has had a red dot cut, and nearly every model without one has been retired.

Springfield announced the Mod.4 on March 24, 2026, less than 18 months after the Mod.3, and it’s the gun that keeps the plain XD alive. You get a 4-inch hammer-forged barrel, a flat-faced trigger, a red fiber optic front sight over a white dot rear, and a slide cut for a red dot. It weighs 27 ounces and costs $399, which makes it the cheapest way into the family by $83.

What changed from the Mod.3 is small. Springfield cut deeper serrations across the whole slide and raised the price by $74. The spec sheets match line for line otherwise: same barrel, same 7.3-inch length, same 27 ounces, same 16-round stainless magazine.

I put 500 rounds through a Mod.4 over two indoor sessions with a Vortex Defender-ST on Springfield’s Plate 2, and it never stopped. Blazer Brass 115-grain FMJ did most of the work. Off a sandbag at 15 yards, Federal HST 124-grain +P gave me a best five-shot group of 1.27 inches, the Blazer went 1.42 and Remington UMC 115-grain JHP went 1.80. Standing with no support I was closer to 3 inches. The trigger has some take-up and then a clean break, and that’s all I ask at this price.

Two catches. The box holds one magazine, not two, so budget for a spare right away. And Springfield sells the optic plates separately at $25 each, so the real cost of a dot-ready Mod.4 is $424 plus the dot. There’s also a 10-round Low Capacity version (XDDG9101BLC-M4) at the same $399.

Best For: First-time buyers and home defenders who want a full-size 9mm with a red dot cut for the least money.

The XD-M Elite is the premium branch. It adds the flat-faced META trigger, an ambidextrous slide stop, bigger slide serrations and a removable flared magwell to the old XD-M.

Here’s the part most pages miss. In October 2026 Springfield lists the 4.5-inch OSP in 10mm only: $674 in black, $718 in Desert FDE, and a 15-round version for restricted states at $674. The one 9mm 4.5-inch OSP left is the California-compliant gun with 10-round magazines at $653 (XDME9459BOSPCA). Every standard-capacity 9mm Elite is marked discontinued, and I cover those in section 7.

So new, this is a 10mm that holds 16+1 and weighs 31 ounces. I ran a little over 500 rounds through one without a malfunction, 100 of them defensive hollow points. Off a bag at 15 yards my best three-shot groups were 0.5 inch with Nosler 200-grain JHP, 0.7 with Nosler 180-grain ASP and 1.0 with Blazer Brass 180-grain. That’s the most accurate polymer 10mm I’ve shot. Recoil is a firm push, closer to a .45 than the wrist-breaker people expect, and the full-length grip gives you plenty to hold.

The slide takes Springfield’s OSP plates. Mine wears a Holosun 507C on Plate 3. If you’re weighing it against the benchmark, read our Glock 20 Gen 5 MOS review, then see where both sit in our best 10mm pistols ranking.

Best For: Woods carry, home defense and anyone who wants the most 10mm capacity with a great factory trigger.

3. Springfield XD-M Elite 3.8-Inch Compact OSP

  • Status: Current
  • Caliber: 10mm

Same trigger and the same slide features on a shorter gun. The barrel drops to 3.8 inches, the height to 4.58 inches and the weight to 27 ounces. Two 11-round magazines come in the box and the price stays at $674.

The trick with the Compact is the grip. Springfield sells a 15-round extended magazine with a sleeve that turns the short grip into a full-size one. You have to pull the magwell off to use it, but it means one pistol can carry short and shoot long.

The 9mm story repeats here. Springfield has discontinued the 14-round 9mm Compact. What’s left in 9mm is two California-compliant 10-round guns at $653: the 3.8-inch Compact OSP (XDME9389CBOSPCA) and a 3.8-inch OSP on the full-size grip (XDME9389BOSPCA).

I shot 300 rounds through the Compact 10mm, mostly Hornady Critical Duty 175-grain FlexLock, and had no stoppages. My guess going in was a handful, and it wasn’t. Hammer pairs on steel at 15 and 25 yards were easy to call with a dot on the slide. The trigger on the 9mm Compact I measured averaged 5 pounds 9 ounces over ten pulls, with a short reset. Planning to carry it in bear country? Our 10mm bear defense guide covers loads.

Best For: Carrying a 10mm on your belt all day, on the trail or in town.

4. Springfield XD-S Mod.2 OSP

  • Status: Current
  • Caliber: .45 ACP
  • Barrel: 3.3 in
  • Overall length: 6.3 in
  • Height: 4.4 in flush, 5 in extended
  • Grip width: 0.9 in
  • Weight: 23 oz with the flush magazine
  • Capacity: 5+1 / 6+1
  • Magazines in the box: One 5-round, one 6-round extended
  • Sights: White dot front, serrated rear
  • Optic cut: Yes, direct mount, no plate
  • MSRP: $482

The XD-S is the single-stack, and at 0.9 inch wide it’s the thin one. Springfield lists just one XD-S today, the 3.3-inch .45 ACP OSP at $482. It holds 5+1 with the flush magazine and 6+1 with the extended one, and weighs 23 ounces. The 9mm OSP models, both the 3.3-inch and the 4-inch, are marked discontinued along with the Crimson Trace bundles. So the slim XD you can order new is a .45 and nothing else.

The optic cut is the simple kind. A dot bolts straight to the slide with no plate, in what Springfield calls the Springfield Micro footprint, the pattern used by the Shield RMSc and SMSc.

I’ve put about 300 rounds through the .45 OSP with a Shield SMSc on it, mostly 230-grain hardball with a couple of boxes of 230-grain hollow points. No malfunctions. Recoil is a shove with real muzzle flip, less sharp than a small 9mm but slower to settle. Five-shot groups from a rest at 15 yards ran right around 2 inches.

Six rounds of .45 is a hard sell in 2026 next to a double-stack micro like the Hellcat, and our Hellcat models explained page covers that family. I’d buy the XD-S if you want a big bullet in a thin gun, and for no other reason. It earned its place in our best subcompact .45 ACP pistols list on exactly those terms.

Best For: Shooters committed to .45 ACP who want the thinnest carry gun that fires it.

5. Springfield XD (the Original)

  • Status: Current, 10-round only
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 4 in
  • Overall length: 7.3 in
  • Height: 5.5 in
  • Grip width: 1.2 in
  • Weight: 28 oz
  • Capacity: 10+1
  • Magazines in the box: Two 10-round
  • Sights: Steel three-dot, dovetailed
  • Optic cut: No
  • MSRP: $540
  • Representative SKU: XD9101

This is the pistol that started it all in 2001, and Springfield still lists 15 variations of it. Every one is labeled Low Capacity. You can have a 3-inch Sub-Compact, a 4-inch or a 5-inch in 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP, plus a 4-inch Compact .45 with a shortened grip. MSRP runs from $540 to $623. None of them has an optic cut, and the sights are plain steel three-dots.

Here’s the odd bit. The 4-inch 9mm original costs $141 more than a Mod.4 that has an optic cut, a flat trigger, better texture and a 16-round magazine. You can get the Mod.4 in a 10-round version too. So the only reasons to buy an original XD new are the calibers and barrel lengths the Mod.4 doesn’t offer: .40, .45, the 3-inch and the 5-inch.

The gun itself has never been the problem. My 4-inch 9mm went 760 rounds on this test log without a stoppage. From a rest at 15 yards, five-shot groups averaged 2.04 inches with Federal HST 124-grain +P, 2.17 with Speer Gold Dot 124-grain and 2.78 with Blazer Brass 115-grain. The 5-inch .40 is the sweet shooter of the bunch. Standing at 7 yards, it put five rounds of Federal Champion 180-grain FMJ into 1.19 inches.

Most original XDs you’ll meet are used, with standard magazines, and Springfield still sells the factory 16-round 9mm magazine for $30.99. Our XD parts guide covers what’s worth changing on one.

Best For: Buyers in 10-round states who want .40 or .45, and anyone shopping the used rack.

6. Springfield XD Mod.3 OSP (Discontinued)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 4 in
  • Overall length: 7.3 in
  • Weight: 27 oz
  • Capacity: 16+1
  • Magazines in the box: One 16-round
  • Optic cut: Yes, OSP plate system
  • MSRP: Discontinued
  • Representative SKU: XDDG9101BOSP

The Mod.3 arrived on October 1, 2024 at an MSRP of $325, and Springfield has already marked it discontinued in favor of the Mod.4. It put a factory optic cut on the plain 4-inch XD, and it uses the same OSP plates as the Mod.4 and the XD-M Elite. On paper it’s identical to the Mod.4. What you can see is the slide: the Mod.3 has a flared cut at the rear in place of the Mod.4’s deeper serrations.

Mine ran several hundred rounds with a Crimson Trace dot on a plate and never stopped. Best five-shot groups from a sandbag at 15 yards were 1.31 inches with Federal HST 124-grain +P and 1.37 with Blazer Brass 115-grain. If a dealer still has a new one at a real discount, take it. You give up nothing that matters.

Best For: Bargain hunters who find leftover stock or a clean used one.

7. Springfield XD-M Elite 9mm Models (Discontinued)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 4.5 in
  • Overall length: 7.6 in
  • Weight: 29 oz
  • Capacity: 20+1
  • Magazines in the box: Two 20-round
  • Optic cut: No on this SKU, yes on OSP models
  • MSRP: Discontinued
  • Representative SKU: XDME9459BHC

The XD-M Elite launched on January 15, 2020 as a 9mm, and the 9mm is the version most people picture. Springfield now marks every standard-capacity one discontinued: the 4.5-inch (20+1), the 3.8-inch on the full grip (20+1), the 3.8-inch Compact (14+1), the 5.25-inch Precision with its adjustable target sight (22+1), and the 4.5-inch OSP Threaded, sold as the Tactical OSP, with a 5.28-inch threaded barrel, suppressor-height sights and 22+1. The .45 ACP Compact OSP is gone too.

Our review gun was the 4.5-inch 9mm. It went 500 rounds without a malfunction, and Blazer Brass 124-grain FMJ was the most accurate load. The full story is in our XD-M Elite review. Dealers still hold stock of these, so a new one is findable for now. After that it’s the used case.

Best For: 9mm shooters who want the META trigger, and competitors hunting a 5.25-inch Precision.

8. Springfield XD-M (Discontinued)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Caliber: 10mm
  • Barrel: 4.5 in
  • Overall length: 7.7 in
  • Weight: 31.2 oz
  • Capacity: 15+1
  • Magazines in the box: Two 15-round
  • Optic cut: No on this SKU, yes on XD-M OSP
  • MSRP: Discontinued
  • Representative SKU: XDM94510BHCE

The XD-M is what the Elite replaced. It has three interchangeable backstraps, a match-grade barrel and a fiber optic front sight, but not the META trigger or the flared magwell. Springfield’s page says a 9mm XD-M held as many as 19+1 in a flush magazine. The SKUs still shown, all discontinued, are .45 ACP and 10mm guns in 4.5-inch, threaded 4.5-inch and 5.25-inch Competition Series form.

I shot the 5.25-inch 10mm from a rest at 25 yards. Five rounds of Speer Gold Dot 200-grain went into 3.10 inches and Buffalo Bore 200-grain Heavy into 2.65. The trigger broke at 5.69 pounds. That’s a good used 10mm for the money, just not an Elite.

Best For: Used buyers after a .45 or 10mm with target sights.

9. Springfield XD-S Mod.2 and XD-S (Discontinued)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 3.3 in
  • Overall length: 6.3 in
  • Weight: 21.5 oz with the flush magazine
  • Capacity: 7+1 / 9+1
  • Magazines in the box: One 7-round, one 9-round extended
  • Optic cut: No
  • MSRP: Discontinued
  • Representative SKU: XDSG9339BT

The non-optic XD-S Mod.2 came out on January 15, 2018 in .45 ACP, and 9mm and .40 S&W versions joined it. Springfield marks all of them discontinued. The Mod.2 fixed the first XD-S’s cheese-grater grip texture, raised your hand on the gun and added a Pro-Glo tritium front sight. Both generations are everywhere on the used market, and the 9mm is the one to look for.

My 9mm Mod.2 went a few hundred rounds without a hiccup. Its best five-shot group from a rest at 15 yards was 0.63 inch, and averages ran from 1.3 to 2.6 inches depending on the load. The trigger broke at 7.1 pounds, which is heavy but predictable.

Best For: A slim used 9mm at a low price.

10. Springfield XD-E (Discontinued)

  • Status: Discontinued
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 3.3 in
  • Overall length: 6.75 in
  • Weight: 24.8 oz with the flush magazine
  • Capacity: 8+1 / 9+1
  • Magazines in the box: One 8-round, one 9-round extended
  • Optic cut: No
  • MSRP: Discontinued
  • Representative SKU: XDE9339BE

The XD-E is the outlier: a single-stack XD with an exposed hammer, a double-action first shot and a thumb safety that doubles as a decocker. It came out in 2017 in 9mm, the .45 ACP followed that November, and Springfield added 3.8-inch and 4.5-inch 9mm versions. All four listed SKUs are discontinued. Springfield says the slide takes 27 percent less effort to rack than rival striker guns, and that’s the reason to hunt one down if your hands aren’t strong.

I have about 1,500 rounds through a 3.8-inch with no malfunctions of any kind. The 3.3-inch put Hornady 124-grain XTP into just under 1.75 inches from a bench at 15 yards. Our original take is in Springfield XD-E: Hammer Time, and striker-fired vs hammer-fired covers the bigger question.

Best For: Shooters who want a hammer, a manual safety and an easy slide in a carry gun.

11. Springfield XD Mod.2 (Discontinued)

  • Status: No longer listed on Springfield’s XD series page
  • Made as: Sub-Compact, 4-inch Service Model, 5-inch Tactical Model
  • Calibers: 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP
  • Capacity: 16+1 in the 4-inch and 5-inch 9mm, 13+1 in the 4-inch .45 ACP
  • Optic cut: Only on Mod.2 OSP models

The Mod.2 was the mid-2010s facelift: a thinner, more sculpted grip and a red fiber optic front sight. Its 4-inch 9mm Service Model shipped in September 2015 with a 16-round magazine, the 5-inch Tactical followed in January 2016, and a 13+1 .45 Service Model arrived in January 2017. Springfield no longer lists any Mod.2 on its XD series page, so this is a used-only gun.

The Sub-Compact is the one people carried. In 9mm it takes the same 13-round flush magazine as the original Sub-Compact, and Springfield’s 16-round extended magazine with the grip sleeve fits Mod.2 pistols only. The .40 uses a 9-round flush magazine or a 12-round extended one. I shot the .45 Sub-Compact from a rest at 25 yards, and five Nosler 230-grain match hollow points went into 2.35 inches with the best three in 1.05. We wrote up the .40 years ago in our XD Mod.2 .40 S&W piece.

Best For: A cheap used double-stack compact with a grip safety.

Which Springfield XD Should You Buy?

For most people the answer is the Mod.4. It’s the cheapest, it’s the newest, it takes a dot, and it holds 16+1 of 9mm. Buy a second magazine and one optic plate with it and you’re done.

Want a 10mm? Get the XD-M Elite 4.5-inch OSP for the house and the woods, or the 3.8-inch Compact OSP if it has to ride on your belt all day. They cost the same, so pick on size.

Want a thin .45? The XD-S Mod.2 OSP is your only new choice. Live in a 10-round state and want .40 or .45 in a full-size gun? That’s what the original XD is still for.

Want a standard-capacity 9mm XD-M Elite? Move soon, because what’s in dealer cases is all there is. After that you’re shopping used, and our used handguns page tracks what’s out there. On any used XD, read the slide before you pay. XD, XD-M and XD-S parts and magazines don’t swap, and sellers mix the names up all the time.

Two rivals deserve a look before you commit. The first is the Glock 19 Gen 6, which wins on holsters, parts and resale. Here’s our Glock 19 Gen 6 review.

The plate guns are the Mod.4, the Mod.3 and every OSP version of the Mod.2, XD-M and XD-M Elite. Springfield sells four plates at $25 each and publishes a fitment chart for them. These are the rows that matter.

PlateSpringfield’s name for itDots Springfield lists on it
Plate 1Docter footprintBurris FastFire 2, 3 and 4, Vortex Viper, Crimson Trace CT RAD
Plate 2Shield/DPP footprintVortex Defender ST, XL and CCW, Shield RMSc and SMSc, EOTech EFLX, Swampfox Sentinel

Plate 4Holosun K Series footprintHolosun 407K, 507K, EPS Carry and EPS

Notice that Springfield gives the Holosun K series its own plate. A 407K or 507K is not a Shield RMSc pattern dot, so it goes on Plate 4, never Plate 2, and it isn’t on Springfield’s list for the direct-mount XD-S at all. The owner’s manual adds one warning I’d take seriously: optic screws can’t stick out more than 0.095 inch below the sight, so test-fit the dot on the plate before you bolt the plate to the slide.

Holosun HS507C-X2

This is the dot on my XD-M Elite 10mm, and it’s the one I’d put on a Mod.4 first. Holosun builds it on the RMR footprint, and Springfield’s chart puts the 507C-X2 on Plate 3. You get a 2 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle or both, a CR1632 battery in a side tray so the sight stays zeroed through a battery change, and up to 50,000 hours of battery life. It weighs 1.5 ounces. Holosun lists it at $364.69, which is close to what the Mod.4 itself costs, and it’s still the best value here.

Trijicon RMR Type 2

If the gun is going into the woods as bear insurance, I’d pay for the RMR. The RM06 has a 3.25 MOA dot, runs on one CR2032 that Trijicon rates for over 4 years of continuous use, and weighs 1.2 ounces. It mounts on Plate 3. One detail from Trijicon’s own page: on a Springfield OSP it says a Trijicon RMR mounting kit, part AC32064, is required, so order that with the sight. Retail is $779, more than either XD-M Elite it would sit on. It’s the toughest open dot I’ve used on a 10mm.

Vortex Defender-ST

The Defender-ST is what I ran on the Mod.4. Vortex gives its mounting footprint as DeltaPoint Pro, and Springfield lists the Defender ST on Plate 2. It has a 3 MOA dot, a CR2032 battery with a 25,000-hour run time and a weight of 1.48 ounces. The window is big for a duty-size dot, which helps a new red dot shooter find the dot on the draw. MSRP is $449.99. Springfield stocks it in its own store, a decent sign it gets along with these slides.

Shield SMSc (for the XD-S Mod.2 OSP)

The XD-S needs a narrow dot, and the SMSc is one of the dots Springfield names for its direct-mount cut. No plate, no adapter. The 4 MOA SMSc has a polymer body that weighs 10.3 grams without the battery, and it runs about 20,000 hours on a CR2032. That battery loads from underneath, so you pull the sight to change it and check zero afterward. It sits low enough that the factory irons still work through the window, which matters on a gun this small.

Springfield XD Magazine Compatibility

Magazines are where XD owners waste the most money, because the names overlap and the guns don’t. Here’s what Springfield’s own store says about fit.

MagazineSpringfield’s fit statement
XD 16-round, 9mm“compatible with full-size XD, XD Mod.2, and XD Mod.3 double-stack 9mm handguns”
XD-M 19-round, 9mm“Will not fit XDM Elite models with magwell”
XD-M Elite 20-round and 22-round, 9mm“Compatible with 9mm standard XD-M pistols”
XD-M and XD-M Elite 35-round, 9mm“Compatible with all XD-M and XD-M Elite 9mm pistols”
XD-M Elite 16-round, 10mm“Compatible with 10mm standard XD-M pistols”
XD-M Elite Compact 15-round with sleeve, 10mm“Requires removal of magwell”
XD-S Mod.2 9-round extended, 9mm“designed to fit in XDS Mod. 2 only”
XD Mod.2 Sub-Compact 16-round extended, 9mm“only fits Mod. 2 XD pistols”

The short version: think of four magazine families. Double-stack XD magazines, which the Mod.4 also ships with in 16-round stainless form. XD-M and XD-M Elite magazines, where the newer Elite magazine goes backward into an old XD-M but the old 19-rounder won’t seat in an Elite wearing its magwell. Single-stack XD-S magazines. And single-stack XD-E magazines, which fit nothing else.

Inside a family, Springfield sells longer magazines with grip sleeves for the shorter guns. That’s how a Mod.2 Sub-Compact takes a 16-round magazine and how the XD-M Elite Compact takes a 15-round 10mm one. Factory magazines start at $30.99 at Springfield’s store, and I wouldn’t trust a bargain copy in a gun I carry.

Buying a Used XD: What I Check

Most of this family now lives on the used market, so here’s my routine at the counter.

First, read the slide and the frame. The model name is marked on the gun, and it tells you which magazines, holsters and optic plates to shop for. An XD-M with a flared magwell and a flat trigger is an Elite. A single-stack with a hammer is an XD-E. Second, count the magazines. Factory ones start at $30.99 each, so a pistol with one magazine is worth less than the same pistol with three. Third, press the grip safety and feel for a clean, springy return, then check that the striker indicator and the loaded chamber indicator both move. Fourth, look at the top of the slide. A cover plate means an OSP gun, and an open cut with no optic means you’re buying a plate and screws as well.

Last, ask about the recoil spring. It’s a wear part, and a tired one causes the failures to return to battery that get blamed on magazines. Our police trade-in guns page explains the condition grades you’ll see on agency pistols.

What Sets the XD Apart: The Grip Safety and Where It’s Made

Every striker-fired XD has a grip safety, a lever in the backstrap that has to be pressed in before the gun will fire. Springfield calls it one of three separate safety systems on the pistol. A normal firing grip presses it without you thinking about it. On a couple of deliberately sloppy grips during our XD-M Elite test it blocked the shot, which is the whole idea and also the reason some shooters won’t own one. Handle an XD before you buy and you’ll know which camp you’re in.

The other two tells are on top of the slide and at the back of it. A loaded chamber indicator sticks up where you can see and feel it, and a striker status pin pokes out of the rear of the slide when the gun is cocked. You can check the gun’s condition in the dark by touch.

The XD isn’t built in Illinois. Springfield has worked with the HS Produkt factory in Croatia since 2001, and HS Produkt makes the XD line along with the Hellcat and the Echelon. Quality has never been the knock on these guns. The knock is the aftermarket, which is thinner than Glock’s and is shrinking as Springfield retires models. Holsters are easy to find. Triggers and slide work take more looking.

Who Should NOT Buy a Springfield XD

  • Grip-safety skeptics: If a lever in the backstrap bothers you, nothing else about the XD will win you over. The Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact gives you the same size and money without one.
  • Shoppers who want a new full-size 9mm with a big magazine: The standard-capacity 9mm XD-M Elite is discontinued. Springfield’s own answer is the Echelon.
  • Deep-concealment carriers: The XD-S is thin but it’s a six-shot .45. A Springfield Hellcat hides as well and holds far more 9mm.
  • Tinkerers who want endless parts: The XD aftermarket is small and getting smaller. A Glock 19 Gen 6 has more triggers, slides and holsters than you could ever try.

FAQ: Springfield XD Models

What are the current Springfield XD models?

Springfield's XD series page lists four model families in October 2026: the XD Mod.4 OSP, the XD-M Elite, the XD-S Mod.2 OSP and the original XD. The Mod.4 is a 9mm at $399. In standard capacity the XD-M Elite is a 10mm in two sizes at $674. Springfield's one XD-S Mod.2 OSP is a .45 ACP at $482, and the original XD is sold only in 10-round Low Capacity versions from $540.

Which Springfield XD models are discontinued?

Springfield marks the XD Mod.3 OSP, the XD-M, the XD-E and the non-optic XD-S Mod.2 as Discontinued on its own site. Inside lines that are still current, the standard-capacity 9mm XD-M Elite models, the .45 ACP XD-M Elite Compact OSP and the 9mm XD-S Mod.2 OSP are marked Discontinued too. The XD Mod.2 no longer has a model page at all.

What is the newest Springfield XD?

The XD Mod.4 OSP. Springfield announced it on March 24, 2026 at an MSRP of $399. It is a 4-inch 9mm with an optics-ready slide, a flat-faced trigger, deeper slide serrations than the Mod.3 and one 16-round magazine in the box. A 10-round Low Capacity version costs the same.

Is the XD-M Elite still made in 9mm?

Only in California-compliant form. Springfield lists three 9mm XD-M Elite OSP pistols with 10-round magazines at $653. The standard-capacity 9mm guns, including the 4.5-inch, the 3.8-inch Compact, the 5.25-inch Precision and the threaded 4.5-inch OSP, are all marked Discontinued. The XD-M Elite you can order new with full-size magazines is a 10mm.

What red dots fit a Springfield XD?

The XD Mod.4 OSP and XD-M Elite OSP use adapter plates that Springfield sells for $25 each. Plate 1 is the Docter pattern, Plate 2 is the Shield and DeltaPoint Pro pattern, Plate 3 takes the Trijicon RMR and Holosun 507C, and Plate 4 takes the Holosun K series. The XD-S Mod.2 OSP needs no plate and takes Shield RMSc and SMSc pattern dots directly. The original XD has no optic cut.

Are Springfield XD magazines interchangeable between models?

Mostly no. Springfield lists its 16-round 9mm XD magazine for the full-size XD, XD Mod.2 and XD Mod.3. XD-M Elite magazines fit standard XD-M pistols, but Springfield says the older 19-round XD-M magazine will not fit XD-M Elite models with a magwell. XD-S and XD-E magazines are single-stack and fit only their own guns.

Does every Springfield XD have a grip safety?

Every striker-fired XD does, which covers the XD, Mod.2, Mod.3, Mod.4, XD-M, XD-M Elite and XD-S. You press it without thinking when you take a firing grip. The hammer-fired XD-E is the exception. It uses an ambidextrous thumb safety and decocker in its place.

Where are Springfield XD pistols made?

In Croatia. Springfield Armory has worked with the HS Produkt factory there since 2001, and HS Produkt builds the XD along with the Hellcat and Echelon. The pistols are imported and supported from Geneseo, Illinois.
