Rock Island Armory makes budget friendly firearms that shoot better than they look.
This 12 gauge semi auto shotgun looks like a child drew an AR-15 from a 5 year old memory, but it all kind of works.
Inside , you’ll find the gas operated action, return spring and support tube. The manual safety position and magazine release mimics the M16 rifle and the best-selling Rock Island Armory VR80 Tactical is as cute as it is inauthentic.
The carry handle removes to leave lots of room on the optics ready Picatinny rail. Slot a red dot sight on that top rail and you’re good to go with a pull on the side charging handle.
You get interchangeable and adjustable choke tubes, too, so you can switch between 2 3/4 inch birdshot through to 3 inch magnum slugs on your magazine fed shotguns.
The Rock Island Armory VR60 shotgun is another option, with a lot more plastic.

This Turkish manufacturer is one of the pioneers of this offbeat mag fed shotgun scene and it has a great bullpup shotgun for you too.
Now the Panzer BP12 semi auto 12 gauge shotgun comes it a super low price point. It isn’t the prettiest, most reliable or the best, but the price point sure is pretty for a basic home defense shotgun.
People use this gas operated shotgun for home defense, hunting and sport shooting. It comes with a detachable carry handle and front sight, and it is chambered for up to 3″ shells.
Accuracy is acceptable, thanks largely to the 20 inch longer barrel, and it’s a relatively customizable shotgun thanks to the detachable shotgun parts and picatinny rail up top and down below for scopes, optics & lasers.
Experience tells us that these tacticool Turkish semi automatic shotguns, bullpup shotguns too, can have spare shotgun parts issues down the line.
It will be easier to service an RIA AR12 shotgun, but it’s not an insurmountable problem, and you do get a great gun at a best buy price.

Back in the old days the Citadel Boss was one of the standout AR-12 semi auto shotgun pioneers.
These days it is one of the semi-automatic AR12 shotgun crowd and it is relying on aggressive pricing a cheek riser and adjustable sights. It is also easy to field strip and is well put together, arguably better than some of the other home defense tactical shotguns here.
It’s a nice magazine fed shotgun for this price range and has a solid following. THe M-Lok rail means there’s plenty of space for shotgun parts & accessories too.
So this 12ga shotgun deserves to be here, and could possibly be the best buy if you find the right semi automatic shotgun gun deals on any given day.

This is an up and coming brand that isn’t quite a match for the Rock Island Armory, yet.
But with time and more positive reviews, this side charging AR-style semi auto shotgun could threaten the RIA and Panzer. Truthfully the price feels too high for this level of prestige, but we have seen this AR12 shotgun advertised cheaper.
At the current price, we’d go with the RIA or Panzer every day. But if you find this semi-auto shotgun on sale, it’s worth considering.

Landor Arms deserves some credit for the interesting stock design that hints at some kind of sniper capabilities. So we applaud the effort.
Underneath, theit seems like another Turkish made shotgun, because it is.
Now the price has crept up, and that’s why it’s down here. Being tough to find is not enough here to justify this price point for this AR style semi auto 12 gauge shotgun.
But if you spot one of these semi-auto shotguns at a lower price, the gun deals God favor you that day, it is a solid option at less than $400 for home defense.

The MKA 1919 Match Pro has been around for a while now, and it has earned its reputation in the 3-gun and tactical shotgun competition community. The VR60 is Rock Island Armory’s entry-level AR-12, sitting below the VR80 in their lineup. It shares the same basic operating system but comes at a lower price point with simpler furniture. If the VR80 is more than you want to spend, the VR60 gets you into the AR-12 world for under $500.
The tradeoff is less refined fit and finish and basic polymer furniture. But the core reliability is there. It cycles the same ammunition the VR80 does and takes the same magazines. For a first AR-12 or a beater you do not mind getting dirty, the VR60 makes a lot of sense.
Best For: Budget buyers who want a Rock Island AR-12 without paying VR80 prices.

What to Know Before You Buy an AR-12
What an AR-12 actually is
The name is marketing, not engineering. An AR-12 is a magazine-fed, gas-operated 12-gauge built to handle like an AR-15: pistol grip, adjustable stock, safety and mag release where your hands already expect them, and a flat-top rail for optics. It is not an AR-15 variant and it does not share parts with one. Nothing swaps over except your muscle memory, which is the entire point.
Almost the whole category is built in Turkey. That is not a knock, it is just the fact that explains the pricing, and it is also why importers and brand names shuffle around so much. The MKA 1919 on this list is a good example: it came in under EAA for years and now arrives under Hyperion Munitions, same gun, different name on the box.
The ammunition reality nobody warns you about
This is the thing that generates almost every angry review of every gun on this page. These are gas guns, and gas guns need a certain amount of energy to cycle. The cheapest promotional target loads, the flats of 100 you buy for clays, are frequently not enough. Buy an AR-12, feed it the lightest birdshot in the shop, and it will short-stroke and you will conclude the gun is junk.
Two things fix it. Run it in with full-power ammunition before you trust it, because these guns loosen up measurably over the first few hundred rounds. And run it wet: they want more oil than a pump gun does. After that most of them will happily eat lighter loads. Manufacturers do publish break-in guidance in their manuals and the specifics vary by model, so read yours rather than taking a number off a forum, mine included.
If you want a 12-gauge that will cycle anything straight out of the box without a thought, you want a pump gun, and there is no shame in that.
Magazines are the real weak point
Shotgun shells are fat, tapered, soft-bodied and nothing like a rifle cartridge, which makes a reliable detachable box magazine genuinely hard to build. Feed problems on these guns are more often the magazine than the gun. Before you buy, check what spare mags cost and whether anybody actually has them in stock, because a mag-fed shotgun with one magazine is a very expensive single-stack. This is the single biggest practical difference between the models here and it is the thing most buyers check last.
What actually matters when you compare them
Chokes. Most of these ship with a set, and most use the Beretta/Benelli Mobil pattern, which means aftermarket tubes are cheap and everywhere. Check before you assume.
Barrel length. Nearly everything here sits at 18.5 to 20 inches. That is a home-defence and 3-gun length, not a clays length. If you want to shoot registered trap with one, you are buying the wrong gun.
Weight. These are heavy for a 12-gauge, most of them close to eight pounds before you hang anything off them. That weight is doing real work soaking up recoil, and it is also why nobody carries one all day in the field.
Who is behind it. The importers on this list have varied a lot in how well they answer the phone. That matters more than usual in a category where a break-in problem and a warranty problem look identical for the first two hundred rounds.
