Magpul DT-S Carbine Stock Adds Battery Storage for $94.95

Last updated November 2026 · By Nick Hall, who covers AR-15 stocks, furniture and parts for USA Gun Shop

Quick take: Magpul has a new AR-15 stock, the DT-S Carbine Stock, and it is the company’s Dual Tensioning stock with two waterproof battery tubes and a bigger cheek weld bolted on. It lists at $94.95 on Magpul’s site, and Magpul shows it in stock.

  • What it is: A collapsible Mil-Spec carbine stock, part number MAG1555, that pairs Magpul’s DT friction lock with two O-ring sealed storage tubes.
  • Price: $94.95 at Magpul, the same price Magpul lists for the MOE SL-S and $25 more than the plain DT Carbine Stock.
  • Where: Magpul’s online store, in Black, Flat Dark Earth and Olive Drab Green, with Modified Coyote Brown listed as coming soon.
  • Why it matters: Shooters who wanted Magpul’s DT lock had to give up the storage tubes of the SL-S, and the DT-S folds both into one part.

Most new AR stocks are either a fresh color on an old mold or a skeleton job that saves two ounces and loses the cheek weld. This one is different. It is a hybrid of two stocks Magpul already sells, and the spec sheet shows exactly what the merger costs you. We pulled the spec sheet straight from Magpul so you don’t have to.

What Is in the Magpul DT-S Carbine Stock

Magpul’s DT-S Carbine Stock product page sums it up as “Keep your stock tight and your batteries dry.” The listing describes it as “made for shooters who demand an adjustable stock with the increased stability and tight lockup of Dual Tensioning (DT) technology, along with waterproof storage capacity combined with an enhanced cheek weld.” It is made in the USA.

The storage is the headline. Two “Dual O-ring sealed storage tubes are waterproof to 10m, and accommodate up to two CR123 or AA batteries each.” That is four spare cells for a light, a red dot or a laser, carried on the rifle instead of in a pouch.

The lockup is the other half. Magpul says DT tech “includes an auto-engaging friction lock that produces additional tension on the buffer tube, providing a tight lockup and minimizing annoying wobble.” A single ambidextrous lever sets length of pull “without the need for a secondary lock.”

The rest of the feature list will look familiar to anyone who has run a Magpul stock. There is an enlarged cheek weld area, a contoured rubber butt-pad with a rollover toe that Magpul says fits better over body armor, an ambidextrous anti-rotation QD swivel socket and a 1.25-inch footman’s loop. It works with Magpul’s ASAP and ASAP QD receiver sling plates, and the optional MOE SL Enhanced Rubber Butt-Pad adds 0.70 inches of length of pull for another $19.95.

The Spec Sheet, Line by Line

Magpul’s numbers are measured on a standard-length, flat-back M4 carbine buffer tube, and the company notes they “may vary depending on tube manufacturer.”

Length of pull runs from about 11 inches collapsed to about 14.3 inches extended, a 3.3-inch adjustment range. The stock is 7.4 inches long, 5.3 inches tall at its highest point and 2.5 inches wide at its widest, with a butt 1.6 inches across.

Weight is 15.0 ounces for the stock alone and about 18.8 ounces with a receiver extension. Magpul lists it for AR-15 and M4 rifles plus the AR-10, SR-25 and M110 family, on a Mil-Spec carbine tube that is not included.

That last part matters. The fine print says there are two sizes of carbine buffer tube, Mil-Spec and Commercial-Spec, and this listing is the Mil-Spec model. If you are not sure which tube your rifle has, check before you order, and our AR-15 buffer weight guide covers the rest of that assembly.

How the DT-S Stacks Up Against the DT and SL-S

The DT-S is a third thing. It isn’t a DT with stickers and it isn’t an SL-S with a new latch, and Magpul’s own spec sheets show where the extra money and weight go.

The DT Carbine Stock, part number MAG1377, lists at $69.95 and weighs 9.8 ounces. It has the same 3.3-inch adjustment range but sits shorter, at about 10.5 to 13.8 inches of pull, and it is only 1.6 inches wide. It has no storage, though it does accept Magpul’s CTR cheek risers.

The MOE SL-S, MAG653, is Magpul’s existing storage stock and lists at $94.95, the same as the DT-S. It weighs 13.3 ounces, runs about 11.0 to 14.3 inches of pull and is 2.4 inches wide. It uses dual-side release levers and an internal anti-rattle leaf spring instead of the DT friction lock.

So the DT-S weighs 5.2 ounces more than the DT and 1.7 ounces more than the SL-S, and it is the widest of the three by a tenth of an inch. You pay for the tight lockup in weight, not in dollars, if you were already shopping the SL-S.

Who Should Buy the Magpul DT-S

If your rifle runs a weapon light and a battery-hungry optic, the DT-S makes a lot of sense. If you are building a light carbine and counting every ounce, the plain DT is the better buy at $25 less.

But the real competition is the SL-S. Collapsible stocks can develop play on the buffer tube with use, and that wobble is exactly the complaint Magpul built the DT friction lock to fix. At the same $94.95, a stock that adds that lock costs you 1.7 ounces and nothing else.

Our best AR-15 stocks roundup ranks the SL-S, CTR and the rest of the field, and the Magpul parts page tracks live prices across the Magpul catalog.

When Can You Buy the DT-S

Now, from Magpul. The product page shows it in stock at $94.95 in Black, Flat Dark Earth and Olive Drab Green, with Modified Coyote Brown “coming soon.” Magpul has not put a date on the fourth color.

Magpul’s store offers free shipping on orders over $99, so the stock alone falls just short, and adding the $19.95 longer butt-pad would put you over.

Tight stock. Dry batteries. Same $94.95 as the SL-S, and that is the whole pitch.

How much does the Magpul DT-S weigh?

Magpul lists the DT-S at 15.0 ounces for the stock alone and about 18.8 ounces with a receiver extension, measured on a standard-length flat-back M4 carbine tube.

What batteries fit in the DT-S storage tubes?

Each of the two tubes holds up to two CR123 or AA batteries, so the stock carries four in total. Magpul says the O-ring sealed tubes are waterproof to 10 meters.

Does the Magpul DT-S fit a commercial buffer tube?

This listing is the Mil-Spec model, and Magpul says it is made for a Mil-Spec carbine receiver extension, which is not included. Check which tube your rifle has before you buy.

What is the difference between the Magpul DT and DT-S?

The DT-S adds two waterproof storage tubes and a larger cheek weld to the DT's friction lock. It costs $94.95 against $69.95 for the DT, weighs 15.0 ounces against 9.8, and gives about 11 to 14.3 inches of pull against about 10.5 to 13.8.
