Quick Answer: The Ruger PC Carbine Takedown is the best 9mm carbine you can buy in 2026, a takedown rifle that breaks in half for storage, accepts both Ruger and Glock magazines via interchangeable mag wells, and runs reliably across the cheapest range ammo.

Best premium PCC: the Sig Sauer MPX, the gold standard for high-end 9mm carbines. Best folding PCC: the Smith & Wesson M&P FPC, which folds in half and uses M&P magazines. Best ultra-budget PCC: the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 at around $430, which folds in half and feeds Glock mags. Best classic PCC: the Henry Homesteader, walnut and blued steel with a threaded barrel. Cheapest that works: the Hi-Point 995TS at around $230.

The biggest mistake new PCC buyers make is buying a 9mm carbine and thinking it replaces a defensive AR-15. PCCs are softer-shooting, quieter, and accurate inside 100 yards, but 9mm out of a 16-inch barrel is still a pistol cartridge. Pick the platform for the role: training and competition for PCCs, defensive use for the AR. The Ruger, the Sig, the Smith and Wesson and the Kel-Tec on this list have each had at least 500 rounds of mixed brass and steel-cased ammo through them on our own range. The Henry, KRISS, Hi-Point and Just Right entries are ranked on published specification and current retail availability, and we say so rather than claim range time we have not put in.

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun. Where we have not shot a specific variant ourselves, we say so in that section.

Winners at a Glance

The Ruger PC Carbine Takedown is still the best 9mm rifle on sale. But it’s much closer than it used to be and you can get a better rifle if you want to spend a little more.

This semi-automatic 9mm carbine rifle is an absolute classic and follows the true Ruger tradition of doing the basics well for a great price.

Add the Ruger PC Carbine 9mm takedown rifle to the best selling Ruger 10/22 22LR rifle and the AR-556 AR-15. It’s an elite list of revered, respected rifles that also happen to be some of the cheapest in their class.

That’s so hard to do, we shouldn’t just brush past it. Ruger knows cheap rifles like few others and the Ruger PC Carbine 9mm takedown with a dead blow action is a perfect example of the company spirit in a long gun.

Share Ammo With Your Sidearm

It’s a takedown rifle with a black synthetic stock. So you can throw this in a backpack together with a few Glock magazines and you’ve kind of got a concealed carry rifle.

You can use proprietary Ruger 9mm magazines intended for the Security-9 compact pistol as well.

You get adjustable iron sights, together with a rail for more serious scopes, optics, weapon lights etc in one of the best 9mm carbine rifle options for sale all powered by a Glock mag.

That turns these Pistol Caliber Carbines into a lethal small game hunting tool. It is also a serious proposition for home defense if you’re concerned about overpenetration with rifle calibers and yet want rifle style accuracy.

Now these Pistol Caliber Carbines are complete rifles chambered in handgun ammo, in a way, so buy your gun online now. And companies like Tandemkross are waiting with an extended magazine release and other aftermarket parts for your pistol caliber carbines.

Cons

  • Costs more than twice what most of this list costs
  • Proprietary magazines, not Glock
  • Heavy once an optic and a full magazine are on board

This high-quality Sig Sauer MPX is the benchmark for 9mm carbines and will go down as one of the all time greats. Price and weight cost it the crown here, but not by much.

Now this Sig Sauer MPX Pistol Caliber Carbine has completely ambidextrous controls. It also employs a fully closed and locked rotating bolt. And the trigger pull is stellar in this company.

A short stroke gas piston system pretty much means you can use dirt grade or the best 9mm ammo in your Pistol Caliber Carbines if you want. Or you can load yours up with 9mm ripper bullets and really get evil.

Either way, it’s a top tier gas system.

These 9mm carbine rifles are popular with law enforcement agencies and military units, so they’re great for home defense.

It’s easy to customize too. Aftermarket parts & accessories like a new magazine release button and charging handle are easy to find and those partial rails have plenty of space for optics and lights.

The Smith & Wesson FPC 9mm Folding Pistol Carbine is a refined version of the Kel Tec and a new entry into the world of folding rifles/9mm rifles.

Smith and Wesson has some great guns at the moment and these 9mm carbines could well climb the list before long. This folding stock rifle comes with a solid charging handle, free float handguard, the barrel takes a range of muzzle devices and the pistol grip on these long guns looks like the compact pistol.

It’s a newcomer to the 9mm carbine scene, and it’s good. The folding stock is really icing on a pretty nice cake.

The Kel-Tec Sub 2000 9mm has won legions of fans around the world with the simple recipe of a lightweight, folding rifle with one of the lowest price tags here.

This is ridiculously light for a gun with a 16 inch barrel made from Chrome Moly Steel. Of course there’s a lot of black polymer, it wouldn’t be a Kel-Tec Sub2000 without that.

See our full Kel-Tec Sub-2000 review for the full hands-on test.

But the barrel, bolt and hinge are steel where it matters, and this 9mm carbine rifle folds in the middle to stash in a backpack. So it’s a Pistol Caliber Carbine that is kind of a survival rifle. Kind of…

That’s close to a concealed carry rifle. That has earned this versatile sort of survival rifle you can carry in the palm of your hand a place in hearts and minds around the world. I mean the pistol grip even doubles as a carry handle on these long guns.

As a personal defense tool, these Pistol Caliber Carbines are better than a pistol, as you’ll win the range war.

Great Mid Range AR-9

Pros

  • Standard AR-15 controls, so there is nothing new to learn
  • Glock magazines with a working last-round bolt hold-open
  • 33-round magazine in the box

Cons

  • Blowback action, so it is snappier than the gas-operated Sig
  • Heavier than a purpose-designed PCC
  • Fit and finish is a step below Sig and Smith & Wesson

The Freedom Ordnance FX9 is one of the finest 9mm carbine pistols on the market. This is basically the longer version.

It’s obviously about as AR-15 style as you can get without being a true AR-15 rifle. So you get a black synthetic collapsible stock, chrome moly steel barrel, a muzzle brake.

There’s also a full-length Picatinny rail with red dot sights space and an M-Lok free float handguard that can take a weapons light. You can use a variety of muzzle devices and it comes with a fully adjustable stock.

Like many other 9mm semi-auto rifles, it takes a Glock magazine and that opens up a world of opportunities. That’s right through to drum magazines and 100-round capacities for these 9mm carbines.

6. Henry Homesteader: Best Wood-Stock Carbine

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 16.37 inch, threaded
  • Total length: 35.75 inch
  • Weight: 6.6 lb
  • Capacity: 5 and 10 round Henry magazines included

Pros

  • Takes Glock, SIG and S&W magazines with the optional adapters
  • Walnut and blued steel, the only carbine here that looks like a rifle
  • Threaded from the factory and genuinely quiet with subsonic ammunition

Cons

  • Heavier than the polymer competition at 6.6 lb
  • Magazine adapters are an extra purchase
  • No optics rail from the factory on the standard model

This replaces the Beretta CX4 Storm, which we can no longer point you at: no retailer we track has stock of the CX4, so recommending it would send you chasing a gun you cannot buy. The Homesteader is a better answer anyway.

Henry launched the Homesteader in 2023 and it is the only carbine on this page that looks like a proper rifle. Walnut stock, blued steel, no rails bolted to anything. Underneath it is thoroughly modern: a 16.37-inch threaded barrel, a soft-shooting blowback action, and the option of running Glock, SIG or S&W magazines through an adapter, so it can share magazines with the pistol you already own.

It is the carbine to buy if you want something that will not frighten anybody, keeps its value, and shoots quietly with subsonic ammunition and a can. It is not the one to buy if you want rails, folding stocks or the lightest thing on the rack.

7. KRISS Vector CRB: Best Recoil Control

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 16 inch
  • Total length: 38.5 inch extended
  • Weight: 7.8 lb
  • Capacity: 17 round Glock magazines

Pros

  • The Super V action drives recoil DOWN, not back into your shoulder
  • Flattest-shooting carbine here by a wide margin
  • Runs standard Glock 17 magazines

Cons

  • Heaviest gun on this list at 7.8 lb
  • Costs three times what the Hi-Point does
  • The shape divides opinion and needs a bigger case

This replaces the Kalashnikov KR-9, which is out of stock at Kalashnikov USA itself and shows up in our feed only as an NFA short-barrelled rifle. That is not a gun we can send a reader to buy.

The Vector earns its place on engineering rather than novelty. Its Super V action redirects the bolt downward instead of straight back, which pushes recoil down into the grip rather than up into your shoulder. The practical result is that the muzzle barely moves. Put two shots into a target at speed with a Vector and then try the same thing with a straight blowback carbine, and the difference is not subtle.

It takes Glock 17 magazines, the 16-inch barrel keeps it a rifle rather than an NFA item, and the stock folds. The price is the argument against it, along with the weight: at 7.8 pounds it is the heaviest thing here.

8. Hi-Point 995TS: Cheapest Carbine That Works

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Barrel: 16.5 inch, threaded 1/2×28
  • Total length: 31 inch
  • Weight: 6.25 lb
  • Capacity: 10+1

Pros

  • Around $230, less than half the price of anything else here
  • Lifetime warranty from Hi-Point, no questions and no receipt needed
  • Threaded barrel, sling and scope base included in the box

Cons

  • Ten rounds, and the magazines are proprietary
  • Blowback action with a heavy bolt, it is not a soft shooter
  • Nobody buys one for the looks

This replaces the PSA Gen4 slot, which returns no stock at any retailer we track under any spelling we tried.

The Hi-Point is the punchline of a thousand gun-shop jokes and it is still the right answer for a lot of people. It costs around $230. It comes with a threaded barrel, a scope base and a sling. And Hi-Point will repair or replace it free, forever, whether or not you are the original owner and whether or not you have a receipt. No other manufacturer on this page offers that.

What you give up is capacity and refinement. Ten rounds through a proprietary magazine, a heavy blowback bolt that thumps, and a gun that weighs 6.25 pounds while looking like a prop. What you get is a 9mm carbine that goes bang, for the price of a decent optic. If the budget is the constraint, this is not a compromise, it is the point.

9. Just Right Carbine Gen 3: Best Takedown for Lefties

  • Barrel: 17 inch, threaded 1/2×28
  • Total length: 31 to 34.25 inch
  • Weight: About 6.5 lb
  • Capacity: 17 round Glock magazines

Pros

  • Bolt can be reconfigured to eject left or right, a genuine rarity
  • Takedown model splits into a backpack-sized package
  • Runs Glock magazines and takes a standard AR grip and stock

Cons

  • Blocky receiver that will not win any beauty contests
  • Heavier trigger than the Ruger or the S&W
  • Takedown version costs more than the fixed one

This replaces the Foxtrot Mike FM-9. FM still make the carbine, but the only FM-9 our retailers stock is the pistol, and a 5-inch pistol has no business on a page about carbine rifles.

The Just Right Carbine does one thing nothing else here does: the bolt and ejection port can be swapped to either side. If you are left-handed, every other carbine on this page throws brass across your face, and this one does not. That alone makes it worth knowing about.

The rest is sensible rather than exciting. Glock magazines, a 17-inch threaded barrel, a standard AR grip and buffer-tube stock so the aftermarket already fits, and a takedown version that separates into two halves small enough for a backpack. The trigger is heavier than the Ruger PC Carbine and the receiver is a slab, but it works and it is priced sensibly.

Micro Roni Pistol Carbine conversion kits turn your Glock into something like an AR pistol.

Now these really aren’t rifles/handguns, they’re both. These plastic conversion kits have space for your 9mm Luger Glock, S&W M&P or Canik TP9 to slot home and it kind of works as an AR pistol.

The charging handle pulls the slide back and a round into battery, a lever action trigger guard safety is there and there’s an integral tactical light on the Roni kit at least.

You even get a slot for an additional Glock mag, which is kind of tactical gear we guess. and it’s easy to set it up for left handed shooting. You do get a much longer sight radius, too.

I mean these conversion kits don’t really work as well as a proper 9mm AR pistol, so honestly buy one of those instead. But it’s here, for informational purposes…

What About a Single Shot Rifle?

We went looking for a decent single shot rifle, because they could be fun. But we just can’t find a Bergara BA14 single shot rifle at the moment. If you have any other great suggestions for a 9mm single shot rifle, let us know.

The Special Interest Arms Novem rifle is the most famous 9mm bolt action rifle, if you’re looking for one.

Where to Buy Ammo

You need to bulk buy ammunition these days, dependiing on your local laws of course. We like Palmetto State and Lucky Gunner for barrels of 9mm, rimfire ammo etc. For the full list, see our cheapest online ammo stores roundup.

With modern prices of ammo, shop around, sure, but these are good start points for 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 9mm hollow points and more. Stock up for your concealed carry handguns, rifles and shotguns.

Remember to shift the price low to high if you want the real bargains.

Anything with a decent dot and a hard-use housing will outlast the carbine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 9mm carbine rifle?

The Ruger PC Carbine is the best overall 9mm carbine for its combination of reliability, takedown capability, magazine versatility (accepts both Ruger and Glock mags), and price (~$549). The Sig MPX is the best premium option. The S&W M&P FPC is the best folding carbine.

What is the difference between a 9mm carbine and a PCC?

A 9mm carbine is a rifle-length gun (16+ inch barrel with a stock) chambered in 9mm. A PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) is the broader category that includes 9mm carbines, AR-9 pistols with braces, and other pistol-caliber long guns. All 9mm carbines are PCCs, but not all PCCs are carbines.

Is a 9mm carbine good for home defense?

Excellent. A 9mm carbine offers shoulder-fired stability for better accuracy, higher capacity than a handgun (17-33 rounds), and the 16-inch barrel adds 100-200 fps of velocity to 9mm defensive loads. The longer sight radius and stock make it much easier to shoot well under stress than a handgun.

What is the cheapest 9mm carbine?

The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 at roughly $400-500 is the cheapest quality 9mm carbine. It folds in half for storage, accepts Glock magazines, and is surprisingly reliable. The PSA AR-9 at $500-600 is the cheapest AR-style 9mm carbine.

Can you use a 9mm carbine for hunting?

A 9mm carbine is suitable for small game and varmint hunting at close range (under 50 yards). It is not appropriate for deer or larger game. The 9mm cartridge, even from a 16-inch barrel, lacks the energy for ethical medium game kills. For hunting, a .223/5.56, .300 BLK, or traditional rifle caliber is a better choice.

Do 9mm carbines share magazines with pistols?

Many do. The Ruger PC Carbine accepts both Ruger Security-9 and Glock magazines. The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 accepts Glock mags. The Beretta CX4 Storm accepts Beretta 92 mags. The S&W M&P FPC accepts M&P magazines. Sharing magazines between your pistol and carbine is a major practical advantage.

Why buy a 9mm carbine?

A 9mm carbine is cheap to shoot, low on recoil, quiet and easy to control, making it superb for training, home defense and plinking. Many share magazines with popular pistols like Glocks, so you can run one caliber and magazine across both. The longer barrel also boosts velocity and accuracy over a handgun.

What is the best 9mm carbine?

The CZ Scorpion and the Sig MPX lead the premium and mid tiers, while the Ruger PC Carbine offers takedown convenience and Glock-magazine compatibility at a great price. The classic pistol-caliber AR builds and the Kel-Tec Sub2000 round out the field. The best one depends on whether you want magazine sharing, portability or refinement.
