What SAAMI Actually Specifies for .45 ACP
The .45 has a reputation for being the heavy hitter, and the pressure figure says something almost nobody expects. These come out of ANSI/SAAMI Z299.3, the centerfire pistol and revolver standard, where the cartridge is listed as 45 Automatic.

The biggest of the three runs the softest
.45 ACP is held to 21,000 psi. A .380 ACP, the little pocket round, is held to 21,500 psi. A 9mm Luger is held to 35,000 psi.
So the cartridge with the widest bullet on this page operates at 60 percent of a 9mm’s pressure, and slightly under a .380’s. That is not a weakness, it is the whole design. The .45 does its work with mass and frontal area instead of speed, and low pressure is what you get when you push a heavy bullet slowly out of a large case.
It also explains the shooting experience people describe as a push rather than a snap. A 1911 recoils with a long, slow impulse because the cartridge driving it is a long, slow impulse. And it is why the lightweight solid-copper loads further down this page feel so different: they abandon the mass half of the equation entirely.
Your barrel was proof tested with +P
In the proof pressure table, against 45 Automatic, SAAMI prints: Obsolete, use 45 Automatic +P proof loads. The standard-pressure proof load has been retired, exactly as it has for 9mm.
A .45 barrel design is now proved with a +P proof cartridge loaded to between 31,000 and 33,000 psi, about 48 percent over the 21,000 psi service ceiling. That is a useful thing to know before you talk yourself out of a box of +P, though it is a one-time destructive test rather than headroom you spend every range trip, and none of it applies to a pistol old enough to predate the +P designation. Check the marking, then decide.
Nearly every .45 load is already subsonic
SAAMI’s velocities are instrumental readings taken 15 feet from the muzzle, not at the muzzle, and the standard notes that catalog figures run a little higher than the instrumental ones.
Read down the .45 column and something jumps out. At 230 grains SAAMI lists 830, 870 and 915 fps. At 200 grains, 885. At 185 grains, everything from 770 up to 1,100. The sound barrier sits around 1,125 fps, so every one of those loads is subsonic before anyone markets it that way.
This is why the .45 became the default suppressor pistol cartridge. You are not paying a velocity penalty to get under the sound barrier, because the cartridge never went over it. A 9mm has to be loaded down to 147 grains to manage the same trick.

You can feel the additional power in the gun, and the target if you get creative. You can search Youtube yourself for people blowing apart gel and meat with LeHigh Defense Xtreme Defense and Xtreme Penetrator.
This self-defense ammo has all the clever tech of the Xtreme Defense flutes at the front that keep the bullet straight and true. It doesn’t rely on expansion like a traditional hollow point, but higher velocity and shock tactics.
Fluid Transfer Monolithic Shock?
Instead the flutes create impact points and effectively a hydraulic shock through the system. That consistently provides a wound cavity 2-4 times as large as the best 45 ACP ammo and a vicious spiral to the cavity that looks, well it looks bad.
This is ammo for self-defense and it really doesn’t care about the other guy. Make your peace with that before you load it into the magazine, because you can’t hesitate when it comes time to pull the trigger.

A New Kind of Bullet That Passes The Smell Test

Now it’s cool you can turn an old 45 ACP into an impromptu shotgun, if you have problems with snakes or other vermin. This really has forged a reputation as a specialist snake pellet in Copperhead and Rattlesnake country and it’s effective to 10 feet.
This really isn’t a self-defense ammo in the traditional sense. If you’ve got two legged varmints then you should invest in one of these mag-fed shotguns.
This really is just a snake gun cartridge. You can do the same job with the 22LR version, or the 9mm version, and you really don’t feel the benefit of the 45 ACP bullet, which is some of the hardest hitting ammo on the market.
This is a spectacular cartridge for one specific job, and that’s it. But if you’re in Copperhead or Rattlesnake country, then this could be an essential addition to your gun safe.

OK so the price is insane, but this truly is a work of art. A horrible, dark, unsettling piece of art, but that counts too.
Basically the hollow-point type front end is designed to break apart on impact with soft tissue. So the bullet doesn’t mushroom out and tumble. Instead it fires 8 trocars of pure copper shrapnel off in every direction and you just have to see what it does to the gel in the video below to truly comprehend the evil genius behind this round.
There’s still a solid, tumbling bullet, but it’s joined by this arsenal of knives. The bullet turns into a mini pipe bomb once it hits flesh and there’s no doubt the results would be devastating.
It’s a bullet that is designed to maim and kill. Even a leg shot would be a heinous mess with all that shrapnel ripping muscle to shreds and threatening to sever blood vessels. It would be a mess, and that means it’s actually kind of limited to home defense.
The last line of home defense, seriously..
It would turn your concealed carry handgun into a weapon of mass destruction, but that isn’t always a good thing.
You just can’t go round pumping this stuff into people without facing some consequences at some point. I mean look what it does to this ballistic gel. That is almost a hate crime…

This could well be the best 45 cartridge on the planet right now. It’s too expensive, disproportionately so, and we struggle to justify the price difference based on the reasons we’ll get to in a moment.
But if you try the 45 ACP HoneyBadger fluted solid copper bullets, love them and don’t want to trust your carry gun with any other carry ammo, then they would be cheap at twice the price. They offer deep penetration, much deeper than average penetration anyway.
Lightweight Ammunition
The bullet weights are not typos. This is a lightweight bullet that you’d expect to find in a 9mm range, but here it is in the heavyweight of the ammunition line up and I have to admit I’m not sure that the inherent advantages of this bullet completely make up for the lack of pure mass.
It’s a high velocity round that generates its force through speed rather than mass. That does bring up the overpenetration debate, but Black Hills Ammunition has achieved stellar user reviews online and these bullets have been tested in pretty much every grotesque way known to man, as well as the traditional gel tests.
There aren’t many people with a bad word to say about Honey Badger ammunition online, so take from that anecdotal evidence what you will.
This bullet is an oddity, which is why people love it. Us too, we’re not afraid to admit it!
Essentially, this bullet does not rely on expansion. Like the LeHigh Defense bullet that was partially developed in collaboration with Black Hills Ammunition, it relies on those crude looking vanes out front creating a shockwave as the bullet enters soft tissue or gel.

Honey Badger vs Xtreme Defense? It’s Close
The results make for pretty intimidating viewing to be honest and the design tweaks that define the Honey Badger vs Xtreme Penetrator battle are all about building pressure at the front of the bullet that offers an alternative to a hollow point. Is it better in terms of stopping power?
It seems to be is the honest answer, but questions inevitably linger.
