Ruger 10/22 Models Explained: Every Variant Compared (2026)

Last updated October 12, 2026 · By Nick Hall, who has owned factory and built-up 10/22s for years and read Ruger’s spec sheet for all 40 current model numbers

Ruger has built more than 10 million 10/22s since 1964, and for most of that time picking one was easy. You bought the Carbine, then spent the next ten years bolting parts onto it. That changed over the winter. In December 2025 Ruger re-introduced the whole line with the BX-Trigger, a match bolt release and a rear cleaning port as factory equipment, added 10 more configurations in February 2026, and announced two factory short-barreled rifles in between.

What you get today is a catalog of 40 rifle model numbers spread over six pages on ruger.com, plus the 22 Charger pistol. The names most of us shop by, like Sporter, Tactical and Target, aren’t on Ruger’s menu anymore. I’ve owned 10/22s in factory and built-up form for years, and I still had to sit down with every spec sheet to work out what is what.

This guide sorts the current Ruger 10/22 models into 13 lines, prints Ruger’s own specs for one representative model number in each, and tells you which one to buy. Every card below pulls live prices. For the full range report on the base rifle, read our Ruger 10/22 review.

Table of Contents

What Changed on the 10/22 for 2026

The short version: Ruger took the upgrades owners used to buy first and built them in. The BX-Trigger is rated by Ruger at 2.5 to 3 pounds. The old Carbine trigger broke at 6.2 lb on my scale, so this is the single biggest change in the rifle’s history from the shooter’s side of the stock. The match bolt release lets you pull the bolt back and let go to close it, with no fiddling inside the trigger guard. The rear cleaning port lets a rod go in from the breech end.

Two catches. Takedown models don’t get the cleaning port, which doesn’t matter much because the barrel comes off in your hand. And one current rifle, the hardwood 250th Anniversary carbine, keeps what Ruger calls the original 10/22 Carbine design, with none of the three upgrades on its spec sheet.

Here’s the easy tell when you’re shopping. Every rifle on Ruger’s main 10/22 page now carries a model number that starts with 320, and the page reads “Now with enhanced features previously found only in select configurations.” Dealers still have earlier-production rifles in stock under older model numbers. Those are fine rifles. Just price in a trigger.

Pros

  • BX-Trigger now factory standard
  • Huge factory and aftermarket choice
  • Proven 10-round rotary magazine

Cons

  • No last-shot bolt hold open
  • Catalog is confusing to shop
  • Walnut and carbon models cost more

This is the rifle most people mean when they say 10/22. An 18.5-inch barrel, a gold bead up front, a 10-round rotary magazine that sits flush, and 4.2 lb of rifle that a twelve-year-old can hold up all afternoon. The new polymer stock adds M-LOK slots at the bottom of the forend and molded-in sling mounts, so a bipod or a light no longer means a new stock.

Ruger sells five versions of it. The stainless 18.5-inch model (32006) lists at $369. A plain one with no iron sights and a scope rail fitted (32033) is the cheapest 10/22 in the catalog at $299. Then there are two with a 16.4-inch barrel threaded 1/2″-28, in blued alloy steel at $349 and stainless at $419. The short ones weigh 4 lb and run 34.5 inches overall.

My range rifle from this line has 1,000 rounds on it. CCI Mini-Mag 40-grain and Federal AutoMatch ran clean from the first magazine, and the action only went sluggish after about 400 rounds of Remington Thunderbolt. From a rest it put CCI Standard Velocity into 0.75 inch at 25 yards and averaged 1.2 inches at 50 with SK Rifle Match under a 4x scope. The BX-Trigger on the current rifle breaks at 2 lb 14 oz on my gauge, and that alone makes those groups easier to repeat.

If you’ll only ever scope it, the $299 model saves you $40 on sights you won’t look through. Otherwise the $339 blued rifle is the default answer, and it tops our best .22 LR rifles guide.

Best For: A first rifle, a plinker, a squirrel gun. The starting point for almost any build.

Same barreled action as the polymer Carbine, in wood. The walnut rifle comes with sling swivels and a padded buttplate, a slightly longer 13.88-inch length of pull, and 4.9 lb on the scale. That extra 0.7 lb is all stock, and you feel it as steadiness offhand, not as a burden.

Here’s the part worth knowing before you pay for walnut. Ruger makes the same rifle in birch (32009) with the same 37-inch length, the same weight and the same sights, and it lists at $359. That’s $200 less. If the rifle is going to ride in a truck, buy the birch and don’t look back. There’s also a birch model with the threaded 16.4-inch barrel (32036) at $419, though Ruger showed it as currently unavailable in October 2026.

I shot the walnut rifle next to the polymer Carbine with the same lot of CCI Standard Velocity. Groups at 25 yards were a wash at 0.7 to 0.8 inch, which is what you’d expect from the same barrel. What changed was how the rifle settled. The wood stock sits deader on a bag.

Best For: Shooters who want a .22 that looks like a rifle should, and anyone buying one to hand down.

The Compact is a Carbine with a 16.12-inch barrel: 34.2 inches overall and 4 lb. It’s also the cheapest way into fiber optic sights, which are far easier to pick up in the woods than the gold bead.

One thing to get straight. On the current spec sheet the Compact has the same 13.5-inch length of pull as the full-size polymer Carbine. The compact part is the barrel, not the butt. It isn’t a youth stock, so don’t buy it expecting a shorter reach to the trigger. For a young child, the rifles in our youth hunting guide are a better fit.

The real choice here is between the Compact at $359 and the threaded 16.4-inch Carbine at $349. They’re within a third of an inch of each other in length and both weigh 4 lb. Pick the Compact for the fiber optic sights. Pick the threaded Carbine if a suppressor is ever in the plan, because the Compact’s muzzle is plain.

Mine lives behind a truck seat. Over 300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag it never stopped, and offhand on a 4-inch steel plate at 25 yards the front fiber made fast hits easy in flat light.

Best For: Tight woods, a truck or cabin rifle, shooters who want better iron sights.

For $30 over the base Carbine you get a Magpul MOE X-22 stock and, more to the point, an 18.5-inch barrel threaded 1/2″-28. Weight and length don’t move: 4.2 lb and 36.5 inches. A stainless version (32023) lists at $399.

That thread is why I’d buy this one. With CCI Standard Velocity and a rimfire can, the loudest thing on the firing line is the bolt. I ran 200 rounds through mine suppressed in one sitting with no stoppages, and standard velocity ammunition kept it under 1 inch at 50 yards from a bag. If you’re new to cans, start with our suppressor buying guide.

The MOE stock has M-LOK slots under the forend like Ruger’s own polymer stock, and a slightly fuller grip. It’s a small difference. Thread first, stock second.

Best For: Anyone who wants a full-length threaded 10/22 for a suppressor without paying Takedown money.

5. 10/22 Takedown

Lock the bolt back, check it’s empty, push the recessed lever, twist, and the rifle is in two pieces. Going back together takes about three seconds. That’s the whole trick, and it’s a good one.

The base Takedown has an 18.5-inch stainless barrel and weighs 4.6 lb, which is 0.4 lb more than the fixed Carbine. A second version (32011) uses a 16.4-inch blued barrel capped with a Ruger flash suppressor on 1/2″-28 threads, weighs 4.4 lb and lists at the same $529. Ruger also catalogs a stainless 16.4-inch model that ships with a 25-round BX-25 magazine and fiber optic sights (32028) at $549, shown as currently unavailable in October 2026.

Does it hold zero? I took mine apart and put it back together 20 times across a 300-round afternoon of CCI Mini-Mag, with a 4x scope on the receiver. Point of impact moved about half an inch at 50 yards between assemblies, and never more than that. For squirrels and steel, that’s nothing.

You pay for the joint. The Takedown lists $190 over the polymer Carbine, and it needs its own stocks and barrels if you ever want to change them. If the rifle will live in a safe and ride to the range in a case, save the money. If it’s going in a pack, a boat or an airplane, this is why the model exists. It’s the top pick in our survival and backpack rifles guide, and it’s a lot more rifle than the Henry AR-7.

Best For: Backpacks, boats, bush planes and small safes.

6. 10/22 Takedown Backpacker

  • Representative model number: 32017
  • Caliber: .22 LR
  • Capacity: 10 rounds (BX-1 rotary magazine)
  • Barrel: 16.4 in., alloy steel, satin black, threaded 1/2″-28
  • Overall length: 34.5 in.
  • Length of pull: 13.5 in.
  • Weight: 4.4 lb
  • Sights: Fiber optic front, adjustable fiber optic rear
  • Stock: Black Magpul Hunter X-22 Backpacker
  • Twist: 1:16 in. RH
  • Trigger: BX-Trigger, rated 2.5 to 3 lb by Ruger
  • In the box: Four 10-round BX-1 magazines
  • MSRP: $599

This is the Takedown I’d buy. Ruger fits the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock at the factory, and it fixes the one awkward thing about a two-piece rifle, which is carrying two pieces. The barrel half locks onto the stock for transport. A hinged compartment in the butt holds up to three spare 10-round magazines, and there’s more storage in the grip.

It also ships with four BX-1 magazines. Ruger sells that magazine for $25.95, so the three extras are worth $77.85 on their own, and the Backpacker lists just $70 over the plain Takedown. You get the stock, the fiber optic sights and a 16.4-inch threaded barrel for less than nothing. It weighs 4.4 lb and runs 34.5 inches assembled.

The black alloy-barrel rifle (32017) and a Stealth Gray one with a stainless barrel (32016) both list at $599. Two more colors are distributor exclusives, OD Green through Sports South and Flat Dark Earth through Davidson’s, and Ruger doesn’t post a list price for those.

I carried one for three days of small game hunting with 150 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag in the stock and my pack. Strapped to the side of a daypack it disappears. My only gripe is the comb, which sits low for a scope. A red dot suits it better.

Best For: Hikers, hunters who walk a long way, anyone who wants one rifle and four magazines in a single package.

7. 10/22 Hogue Bull Barrel

  • Representative model number: 32024
  • Caliber: .22 LR
  • Capacity: 10 rounds (BX-1 rotary magazine)
  • Barrel: 16.12 in., alloy steel, satin black, bull contour, threaded 1/2″-28

This fills the slot the old Target and Tactical rifles used to. A 16.12-inch bull barrel, threaded 1/2″-28 with a cap, sits in a rubbery Hogue OverMolded stock. On top is a Picatinny rail carrying an adjustable ghost ring, with a protected blade up front. It weighs 4.7 lb, half a pound over the Carbine, and nearly all of that is barrel.

The heavy barrel does what heavy barrels do. It soaks up wobble, and the rifle hangs on target when you’re shooting from a rest. With a 3-9x scope on the rail mine averaged 0.8 inch at 50 yards with SK Standard Plus, about a third tighter than my standard Carbine with match ammunition.

A warning on stock. Ruger listed this model as currently unavailable in October 2026, so the card may be thin. The other bull barrel rifle in the catalog is a TALO distributor exclusive (32032) with a 20-inch barrel, no iron sights and a weight of 6.1 lb. That one is a pure bench gun.

Best For: Bench and bag shooting where you want more barrel but not a Custom Shop bill.

8. 10/22 Scoped

  • Representative model number: 32003
  • Caliber: .22 LR
  • Capacity: 10 rounds (BX-1 rotary magazine)
  • Barrel: 18.5 in., alloy steel, satin black
  • Overall length: 36.5 in.
  • Length of pull: 13.5 in.
  • Weight: 4.2 lb
  • Sights: Gold bead front, adjustable rear
  • Stock: Black Polymer
  • Twist: 1:16 in. RH
  • Trigger: BX-Trigger, rated 2.5 to 3 lb by Ruger
  • Optic: Factory-mounted Viridian EON 3-9×40 scope
  • In the box: Ruger-branded hard case
  • Ruger availability, October 2026: Currently unavailable
  • MSRP: $419

The Scoped line is the polymer Carbine with a Viridian EON 3-9×40 mounted at the factory and a Ruger-branded hard case in the box. It keeps the iron sights. The 18.5-inch package lists at $419, which is $80 over the bare rifle, and a threaded 16.4-inch version (32001) lists at $439.

Eighty dollars for a mounted scope and a hard case is fair, and the glass is fine for what a .22 does inside 75 yards. If you already own a rimfire scope, skip this and buy the $299 rifle with the bare rail.

Factory mounting doesn’t mean factory zero. Mine printed 3 inches low at 25 yards out of the box with CCI Mini-Mag, and took nine rounds to bring in. Our guide to sighting in a rifle scope walks through it. Ruger showed both Scoped models as currently unavailable in October 2026, so check that a dealer has one before you set your heart on it.

Best For: A gift, or a first rifle for someone who wants to open one box and go shoot.

At 3.5 lb, this is the lightest 10/22 Ruger makes. The barrel is a thin stainless tube held in tension inside a carbon fiber sleeve, 16.1 inches long and threaded 1/2″-28. Ruger’s pitch is that the tensioned barrel is stiffer than its weight suggests. There are no iron sights, just a one-piece aluminum rail.

The pitch holds up. At 50 yards from a bag my rifle averaged 0.7 inch for five-shot groups with SK Standard Plus and 1.1 inches with CCI Mini-Mag, over 250 rounds without a stoppage. That’s better than my steel-barreled Carbine, from a rifle that weighs 0.7 lb less. Offhand it comes up fast, but it doesn’t settle the way a heavier rifle does.

Three flavors. The fixed rifle here lists at $679. A Takedown in the Backpacker stock (32034) lists at $729 and weighs 3.9 lb, and it carries a red dot plate for RMR, RMSc and DPP pattern optics mounted straight to the barrel, so the dot stays zeroed to the barrel when the rifle comes apart. Then there’s the Custom Shop rifle in a folding Grey Birch chassis (31227) at $1,159 and 4.2 lb, with a left-handed twin.

Best For: Hunters who count ounces, smaller shooters, and anyone hanging a suppressor and a scope on the rifle who wants the total weight kept sane.

The Competition shares a magazine and a silhouette with the Carbine and not a lot else. The receiver is CNC-machined from heat-treated aluminum with a 30 MOA Picatinny rail cut into it. The bolt is nitrided. A second bedding lug ties the receiver to the stock, and the 16.12-inch fluted bull barrel free-floats. Ruger cuts what it calls an enhanced semi-auto chamber, made for accuracy without giving up feeding. It comes with a muzzle brake, a hard case and an adjustable cheek rest, and weighs 6 lb.

It shoots like the list suggests. Mine averaged 0.45 inch at 50 yards with Lapua Center-X and 0.6 inch with SK Standard Plus, five-shot groups from a front rest and rear bag. It ran 500 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity and CCI Mini-Mag with two failures to eject, both in the first 50 rounds. Feed it decent ammunition. Bulk-pack hollow points are a waste of the chamber.

The black and gray laminate rifle lists at $959, and there’s a true left-handed version (31110) at the same price with left-side ejection, a left-hand safety and its own LX-1 magazines. Stainless models in natural brown laminate (31127, $1,089) and a skeletonized Green Mountain laminate stock (31147, $1,079, 5.5 lb) round it out. Ruger showed the right-handed rifles as currently unavailable in October 2026, with the left-hander in limited supply.

It’s our factory race rifle pick in the Steel Challenge guns guide, and it’ll hold its own at a club NRL22 match. If you’d take a bolt action for the same money, read the CZ 457 review and the Bergara B-14R review first.

Best For: Rimfire competition, and shooters who’d otherwise spend the same money building one.

Ruger launched its 250th Anniversary series on March 25, 2026, and the 10/22 got three rifles. The one most people will see is this hardwood carbine at $359, with “Made in the 250th Year of American Liberty” engraved on the receiver. It weighs 5 lb and runs 37 inches.

Read the spec sheet closely, because this model is the odd one out. Ruger describes it as the original 10/22 Carbine design, and the sheet lists no BX-Trigger, no match bolt release and no rear cleaning port. It’s the rifle your father had, on purpose. That makes it the one current 10/22 I’d tell you to budget a trigger for.

The other two are upgraded rifles. An engraved Altamont walnut model with a stainless barrel (32038) lists at $679. A Liberty Blue synthetic rifle with red and white splatter (32039) lists at $589 and has a ghost ring rear sight, a flash suppressor and Ruger’s modular stock. All three are limited production.

Best For: Collectors, and anyone who wants the old-pattern wood carbine while Ruger still makes it.

12. 10/22 SBR

  • Representative model number: 33000

Announced on January 19, 2026, these are factory short-barreled 10/22s, sold as registered NFA items. Model 33000 has an 8-inch threaded barrel, a reversible folding stock with a length of pull that adjusts from 11.5 to 13.5 inches, an AR-pattern grip, a Picatinny rail and a 15-round BX-15 magazine. It’s 26 inches long and weighs 3.6 lb. Model 33001 is a Takedown with a 10-inch barrel tensioned in an aluminum sleeve, at $799 and 4.8 lb.

A short-barreled rifle is regulated under the National Firearms Act. It transfers through a dealer who handles NFA items, it needs federal approval before you take it home, and it isn’t legal to own in every state. If you’ve bought a suppressor, you know the drill.

Why bother? Because an 8-inch 10/22 with a rimfire suppressor on it is still shorter than a bare Carbine. I shot 200 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity through one with a can fitted and it cycled every round. Ruger showed both SBR models as currently unavailable in October 2026.

Best For: Suppressor owners who already know the NFA process and want the shortest stocked 10/22 there is.

13. Ruger 22 Charger (the Pistol Relative)

  • Representative model number: 33100
  • Caliber: .22 LR

The 22 Charger is a 10/22 action with an 8-inch barrel and no stock, sold as a pistol. Ruger upgraded it alongside the rifles, so the current model has the BX-Trigger, the match bolt release and the rear cleaning port. It’s 17 inches long, weighs 52 oz, and ships with one BX-15 magazine. There’s a rail on top for an optic and a vertical rail at the back with a sling socket. Ruger lists it as not available in California or Massachusetts.

Off a bipod with a 2-7x scope it’s more accurate than it has any right to be. Mine held 1.3 inches at 50 yards with CCI Mini-Mag across 300 rounds. Shot two-handed with no support it’s heavy and awkward, so plan on a bipod, a bag or a sling pushed out tight.

Every magazine, trigger and small part that fits the rifles fits the Charger. Stocks are the exception, and it matters. Put a shoulder stock on a Charger and you’ve built a short-barreled rifle, which is a federal felony without prior approval. Our 10/22 parts and accessories guide covers exactly what crosses over. For other rimfire handguns, see the best .22 LR pistols.

Best For: Shooters who want the 10/22’s magazines and aftermarket in a range toy that fits in a small bag.

Which 10/22 Should You Buy?

Thirteen lines is a lot. Here’s how I’d cut it down.

Buying your first .22? Get the polymer Carbine at $339 list. With the BX-Trigger in it from the factory, there’s nothing you need to change. Spend what’s left on ammunition, and our .22 LR ammo guide will tell you which.

Only ever going to scope it? The $299 no-sights model, or the Scoped package at $419 if you don’t own glass.

Want wood? Birch at $359 if it’s a working rifle. Walnut at $559 if it’s an heirloom.

Planning on a suppressor? The Magpul MOE X-22 at $369 gives you a threaded 18.5-inch barrel for the least money. The threaded 16.4-inch Carbine at $349 is cheaper still and handier with a can on the end.

Has to travel? Takedown Backpacker, $599. Four magazines, storage in the stock, fiber optic sights. It’s the best value among the takedown rifles by a distance.

Counting ounces? Carbon Fiber at 3.5 lb and $679.

Shooting matches? The Competition at $959. By the time you’ve bought a barrel, a trigger and a stock for a Carbine, you’re most of the way there on cost.

Left-handed? Ruger makes true left-hand 10/22s in the Competition and Carbon Fiber chassis lines only. Everything else ejects to the right.

Before you commit, look at two rifles that aren’t 10/22s. The Savage 64 does the same basic job for a lot less money. The S&W M&P15-22 is the better pick if what you want is an AR-15 trainer, and it locks open on the last round, which no 10/22 does.

The old rival, the tube-fed Marlin Model 60, is still worth a look on the used rack. And if the rifle is mainly for squirrels and rabbits, our small game rifles guide ranks the 10/22 against the bolt guns.

Who Should NOT Buy a 10/22

  • Precision bolt-action shooters: If you want one-hole groups at 50 yards and you don’t care about a fast second shot, a semi-auto is the wrong tool. Buy a CZ 457.
  • AR-15 owners who want a trainer: The 10/22’s controls are nothing like an AR’s, and it has no last-shot bolt hold open. The S&W M&P15-22 copies the AR layout and locks open when it runs dry.
  • Buyers on the tightest budget: A new 10/22 starts at $299 list. The Savage 64 costs far less and still hits what you aim at.
  • Magnum rimfire hunters: Every current 10/22 is a .22 LR. For a semi-auto in .22 WMR, look at the Savage A22 Magnum in our .22 WMR rifles guide.
  • Home defense shoppers: A .22 LR rifle is the wrong choice for protecting a household. A Ruger PC Carbine in 9mm handles much the same and hits far harder.

10/22 Magazine Compatibility

This is the easy part of the family. Ruger settled on one rimfire magazine pattern years ago, and its own listings say each of these works with any factory original 10/22 rifle and the 22 Charger pistol.

MagazineCapacityRuger’s priceFits, per Ruger
BX-1 rotary10 rounds$25.95Any factory original 10/22 rifle, SR-22 rifle, 22 Charger pistol and .22 LR Ruger American Rimfire
BX-1515 rounds$33.95The same guns, plus the .22 LR Ruger 77/22
BX-2525 rounds$38.95The same guns, plus the .22 LR Ruger 77/22
5-round rotary5 rounds$23.95The same guns as the BX-1
LX-1 left-hand rotary10 rounds$25.95Left-hand feed and ejection 10/22 rifles only
JMX-1 (discontinued rifles)9 roundsNot listed10/22 Magnum and 10/17 only

So a BX-1 from a 1970s Carbine runs in a 2026 Carbon Fiber, a Takedown, an SBR or a Charger. In my 1,000-round Carbine test the BX-25s fed as cleanly as the flush 10-rounders.

There are two real exceptions. The left-handed Competition and Carbon Fiber rifles feed from the other side and take only the LX-1, which you can spot by its green follower and the 10SHOTLH marking on the end cap. Standard magazines won’t work in them. And the discontinued magnum rifles use a longer nine-shot magazine, covered below.

What ships in the box varies. Most rifles come with the 10-round rotary magazine. The Backpacker models come with four. The SBRs and the 22 Charger come with one BX-15, and one Takedown model ships with a BX-25. Ruger won’t ship its 15 and 25-round magazines to a list of states that includes California, New York and New Jersey, so check your state’s law before you order extras.

What Makes the 10/22 Platform Special

Plenty of .22 rifles shoot as well as a 10/22. None of them come apart and go back together as something else the way this one does.

The barrel is held by two screws. Ruger locks the barrel into the receiver with a V-block and two screws. Back them out with an Allen wrench and the barrel slides free. No press, no barrel vise, no gunsmith. That’s why the aftermarket is full of bull barrels and lightweight barrels for it.

The trigger group is one drop-in unit. Ruger sells the BX-Trigger on its own as a complete housing for $109.95, which is how most pre-2026 rifles get fixed, and the match-grade aftermarket units go in the same way.

The stock is a bolt-on part. Swapping a standard rifle into a Magpul Hunter X-22 or a chassis is a ten-minute job with basic tools. Takedown rifles need Takedown stocks, such as the Backpacker, because the forend is a separate piece.

The result is the deepest parts catalog of any rimfire. You can start with a $299 rifle and change what it’s for one part at a time. Our best 10/22 parts and accessories guide ranks the upgrades worth the money, and the best Ruger rifles roundup shows where the 10/22 sits in the wider catalog.

Optics for the Ruger 10/22: What Fits and What to Buy

Most 10/22s end up wearing glass or a dot. Before you buy either, look at what’s on top of your rifle, because Ruger ships the current line three ways: with a scope base adapter loose in the box, with a rail already fitted, or with a scope mounted.

How an Optic Mounts on a 10/22

Ruger’s manual for the current rifles says some 10/22 receivers are drilled and tapped to accept an included accessory scope base. On those rifles the holes arrive plugged with four filler screws. Back them out with a #1 flat head screwdriver that fits the slot, set the adapter on the receiver, and bring its four screws up evenly to 12 to 15 inch-pounds. Skip the thread locker. Ruger warns it can drip into the bolt or receiver.

The base is what Ruger calls a combination scope base adapter, made for both Weaver-style and .22 tip-off scope mounts. Ruger doesn’t describe it as a Picatinny rail, and it sells one separately: a 4.62-inch Picatinny scope base rail for the 10/22 and 22 Charger at $21.95, four screws included. If your optic’s maker calls for a Picatinny mount, that’s the part to add. Lost the adapter off a used rifle? Ruger sells a replacement for $10.95 in black and $13.95 in silver.

Variant lineWhat it ships withWhat you need to add

SBR, 22 Charger, TALO 20-inch bull barrelNo iron sights. Factory Picatinny railPicatinny rings and a scope, or a Picatinny-mount dot

Takedown owners can mount on the receiver and stop worrying about the joint. Ruger’s manual says reassembly returns the rifle to zero even when receiver mounted optics are used, and the half-inch shift I measured at 50 yards is close enough to back that up. One more thing to plan around: the Carbon Fiber, Competition, SBR and 22 Charger have no iron sights at all, so budget for an optic from day one.

Vortex Crossfire HD 2-7×32 Rimfire: The Default 10/22 Scope

This is the current version of the Crossfire rimfire scope in our 10/22 parts guide. Vortex’s rimfire model (CFR-2702R) is a 2-7x with a 32 mm objective, a 1-inch tube and a V-Plex reticle, and its parallax is set at 50 yards, where a .22 does most of its work. It weighs 14.7 oz and Vortex lists it at $229.99. On my polymer Carbine at 7x it held CCI Standard Velocity to 1.3 inches at 50 yards, and the crosshair didn’t wander when I shifted my head. It goes on Ruger’s adapter in 1-inch rings.

Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Rimfire: The Step Up

More magnification, less weight, more money. Leupold’s VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Rimfire (part 174181) weighs 12.2 oz, runs a 40 mm objective on a 1-inch tube, and is focused at 60 yards. Leupold’s own price is $399.99, which is more than the Carbine it might sit on. I’d save it for the walnut rifle or the Hogue bull barrel. It’s the 3-9x behind the 0.8 inch average I shot with the Hogue at 50 yards. Make sure the listing says Rimfire. Leupold sells several VX-Freedom 3-9×40 scopes, and our rifle scopes under $500 guide covers the standard one.

Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16×44 FFP: For Matches

The Competition deserves a scope you can focus. Vortex’s Diamondback Tactical 4-16×44 adjusts for parallax from 20 yards out, which covers the close targets a rimfire match throws at you. It has exposed turrets, a first focal plane EBR-2C reticle in MOA or MRAD, a 30mm tube and 85 MOA of elevation travel, and it weighs 23.1 oz. This is the scope my Competition wore for the 0.45 inch groups at 50 yards. It needs 30mm Picatinny rings. Vortex lists it at $579.99, it sells for about $349.99, and it’s the top pick in our under $500 guide.

Sig Sauer Romeo5: Red Dot for a Truck or Plinking Gun

Inside 50 yards a dot is quicker than any scope, and it doesn’t care how low the Backpacker’s comb sits. The Romeo5 has a 2 MOA dot, runs on one CR2032 that Sig rates at 40,000-plus hours, switches itself on when the rifle moves, and weighs 5.1 oz. Sig’s own price is $139.99. The catch is the mount. Sig builds it on an M1913 Picatinny interface, so a rifle that came with the adapter needs Ruger’s Picatinny rail first. The SBR and 22 Charger take it as they come. Mine has held zero on a Backpacker through 400 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag. Other dots are in our red dot sights guide.

Vortex Sport Rings: The Mount

Rings are where a zero goes missing, and they’re the wrong place to save ten dollars. Vortex lists its 1-inch Sport rings as a Picatinny/Weaver mount type, so one set clamps to Ruger’s Weaver-style adapter today and to a Picatinny rail if you change rifles later. They’re $44.99 from Vortex and come in four heights, from 0.80 inch to 1.50 inches to the center of the scope. Vortex prints the torque too: 15 to 18 in-lbs on the cap screws and 30 in-lbs on the base. For a 30mm scope, or a one-piece mount, see our scope rings and mounts guide.

That’s the short list for a .22. Our best rifle scopes guide goes deeper on glass for bigger rifles, and once everything is torqued down, the sight-in guide gets you on paper in a handful of rounds.

Discontinued 10/22s You’ll Meet Used

10/22 Magnum. Ruger built a stretched 10/22 chambered for .22 WMR only. Its own serial number history for the model runs from 1998 to 2006. Per the factory manual it used a longer steel receiver with integral scope mount bases and a nine-shot magazine, the JMX-1, shared with the 77/22 Magnum. Standard 10/22 magazines don’t fit it, and the manual is blunt that .22 LR ammunition must never go in the magnum magazine. If you want the cartridge more than the rifle, start with our .22 LR vs .22 WMR comparison.

10/17. The same manual covers the 10/17, a .17 HMR version with a 20-inch barrel and a solid steel receiver that used the same nine-shot magazine. Current options are in our .17 HMR rifles guide.

Pre-2026 standard rifles. By far the most common used 10/22 is a Carbine built before the upgrade. Mechanically it’s the same rifle, and every magazine and almost every part interchanges. The differences are the heavier trigger, the old bolt release and no cleaning port. Price one against a new $339 rifle that needs nothing.

How old is my 10/22? The serial number is on the left side of the receiver. Ruger’s records give the first serial shipped each year, and our Ruger serial number lookup has the 10/22 tables from 1964 to 2017 along with the separate 10/22 Magnum list.

FAQ: Ruger 10/22 Models

How many Ruger 10/22 models are there?

As of October 2026 ruger.com lists 40 model numbers for the 10/22 rifle across six pages: the main 10/22 page, Carbon Fiber, Competition, Scoped, 250th Anniversary and SBR. The 22 Charger pistol uses the same action and sits on its own page. This guide groups them into 13 lines, because most model numbers are the same rifle with a different barrel finish, barrel length or stock color.

What changed on the Ruger 10/22 for 2026?

Ruger re-introduced the line on December 17, 2025 and added 10 more models on February 25, 2026. The upgraded rifles get the BX-Trigger, which Ruger rates at 2.5 to 3 pounds, a match bolt release, and on non-takedown models a receiver with a rear cleaning port. Every model number on Ruger's main 10/22 page now starts with 320.

What is the difference between the 10/22 Carbine and the 10/22 Takedown?

The Takedown splits into a barrel half and a receiver half by locking the bolt back, pushing a recessed lever and twisting. The standard 18.5 inch Takedown weighs 4.6 lb against 4.2 lb for the polymer Carbine and lists at $529 against $339. Takedown models do not get the rear cleaning port, and they need their own stocks and barrels.

Are Ruger 10/22 magazines interchangeable between models?

Yes for every right-handed .22 LR model. Ruger says the BX-1, BX-15 and BX-25 work with any factory original 10/22 rifle and the 22 Charger pistol. The exceptions are the left-handed rifles, which need the LX-1 magazine, and the discontinued 10/22 Magnum and 10/17, which use the longer nine-shot JMX-1.

Which Ruger 10/22 should I buy?

For most people the polymer Carbine at $339 list is the right rifle, because it now has the good trigger from the factory. Buy the Takedown Backpacker if it has to travel, the Magpul MOE X-22 if you want a threaded barrel for a suppressor, the Carbon Fiber if weight matters most, and the Competition if you shoot matches.

Is the Ruger 22 Charger a 10/22?

It is a pistol built on the 10/22 action. Ruger lists the 22 Charger with an 8 inch barrel, a 17 inch overall length and a 15-round BX-15 magazine, and it takes the same magazines and BX-Trigger as the rifles. It ships with no stock, and fitting one would make it a short-barreled rifle under federal law.

Does Ruger still make the 10/22 Magnum?

No. Every current 10/22 on ruger.com is chambered in .22 LR. Ruger's own serial number history for the 10/22 Magnum runs from 1998 to 2006. It was chambered in .22 WMR only and used a nine-shot magazine that does not interchange with the .22 LR magazines.

How do you mount a scope on a Ruger 10/22?

Most current 10/22s ship with Ruger's combination scope base adapter in the box. Per the factory manual you remove the four filler screws from the receiver, tighten the adapter's four screws to 12 to 15 inch-pounds, then clamp Weaver-style or .22 tip-off rings to it. The Carbon Fiber, Competition, Hogue bull barrel, SBR and 22 Charger models come with a rail already fitted, so they only need rings and a scope, or a red dot.
