Magnum Research is a strange company. It makes exactly one gun everybody has heard of, and a handful more that almost nobody has, and the famous one is a gas-operated hand cannon that half the shooting world thinks is a movie prop.

The Desert Eagle is real. It works. It is also heavy, fussy about ammunition, expensive to feed, and completely impractical for anything you would sensibly do with a handgun. That combination is the entire appeal, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone’s time.

But the brand is more than the one pistol. The BFR is a genuinely excellent single-action revolver that gets ignored because it stands next to something louder, and it happens to be the cheapest way to get a Magnum Research gun into your gun safe. There is a rimfire line too.

So here is the honest run through everything Magnum Research currently sells that you can actually buy, what each one costs in 2026, and which of them makes sense for you.

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun. Where we have not shot a specific variant ourselves, we say so in that section.

The .50 AE is the reason anybody knows the name. It is a gas-operated semi-automatic pistol firing a cartridge that produces more muzzle energy than a 5.56 round out of a short carbine, and it does that from something you hold in two hands and hope for the best.

Recoil is not as violent as people expect, because the gas system and the sheer mass of the gun soak up a lot of it. What gets you is the muzzle blast. Shooting one indoors is genuinely unpleasant for everybody on the line, and you will know within two magazines whether you find that funny or tiresome.

Street prices across our retailers run from about $1,467 for a plain black one up to $2,246 for the premium finishes, and the brushed chrome sits in the middle. We put one through a 500 round test if you want the long version, in our Desert Eagle .50 AE review.

Best For: The buyer who wants the icon and has already made peace with what it costs to feed.

If you want a Desert Eagle and you also want to shoot it more than twice a year, this is the one to buy. The frame is identical, the presence is identical, and .44 Magnum costs roughly half what .50 AE does per round while being available at every counter in the country.

There is a catch, and it is the same catch that catches everybody. A gas-operated pistol needs full-power jacketed ammunition to cycle. Soft lead and light cowboy loads will not run it, and hollow points with an aggressive profile can hang up on the feed ramp. Magnum Research publishes its own ammunition guidance, and it is worth reading before you buy a case of anything.

Rows across our retailers sit between about $1,459 and $1,767, which makes this the narrowest price band in the range. If a revolver would do the job, our .44 Magnum revolver guide covers cheaper and lighter ways to shoot the same cartridge.

Best For: Anyone who wants the platform without the ammunition bill.

Nobody buys this one first. They buy the .50, shoot 40 rounds, work out what that costs, and then start reading about the .357.

Put a .357 Magnum cartridge into a four and a half pound gas-operated pistol and the recoil more or less disappears. You get ten rounds, ammunition that costs a fraction of .50 AE, and a gun that is actually pleasant across a long range session. Groups tighten up noticeably too, because you stop bracing for the shot.

The trade is that the whole point of a Desert Eagle is theatre, and this is the least theatrical version. Rows run from roughly $1,565 to $2,300 depending on finish. Our .357 Magnum revolver roundup is the cheaper comparison if the platform is not the point for you.

Best For: The owner who wants to put real round counts through the frame.

Magnum Research necked the .50 AE case down to .429 and got a cartridge that pushes a 240 grain bullet faster than .44 Magnum manages. On paper it is the most interesting thing the company has done in years, and we covered it when the .429 DE was announced.

In practice you are buying a supply problem. Factory .429 DE is made by very few people, your local shop will not have it, and if the cartridge is ever discontinued you own a gun that needs a barrel swap to stay useful. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to buy the conversion barrel at the same time.

It is also the priciest of the four, with rows between about $1,681 and $2,500.

Best For: The collector who already owns a .50 and wants the odd one.

The BFR is the gun in this range I would actually recommend to somebody who wants to use it rather than own it. It is a big stainless single action built in cartridges the Desert Eagle physically cannot handle, including .45-70 Government and .500 S&W Magnum.

A revolver does not care what bullet profile you feed it, which removes the one genuine reliability headache that comes with the autoloaders above. That makes it the better hunting tool by a wide margin, and it is why you see BFRs in the field and Desert Eagles in gun-shop display cases.

Rows start around $1,031 and run to about $1,422, so it undercuts every Desert Eagle in the line-up. If big-bore handgun hunting is where you are headed, our big game hunting handgun guide puts it in context against the competition.

Best For: Handgun hunters, and anyone who wants the brand without the theatre.

Searching 200+ retailers...

Almost nobody knows Magnum Research makes .22 rifles, and the dealer coverage reflects that. We can find two of them across our whole retailer network, at $876 and $900, which tells you how deep the market for these is.

They are decent rifles. The SwitchBolt and SpeedShot are light, accurate, and come with a rail already fitted. But they cost roughly three times a Ruger 10/22, and the badge on the side does not do for a rimfire what it does for a hand cannon.

Best For: Completists. Almost everybody else should buy a 10/22 and spend the difference on ammunition.

Which Magnum Research gun should you actually buy?

Work backwards from how often you plan to shoot it. That single question sorts this entire range faster than any spec comparison.

If the answer is “a few times a year, and I want people to notice,” buy the .50 AE and enjoy it for what it is. If the answer is “most weekends,” buy the .357 Magnum, because the .50 will price you out of practising and a gun you never shoot is an ornament.

If you actually intend to hunt with it, buy the BFR. It is cheaper, it handles bigger cartridges, and it does not care what bullet you feed it. The Desert Eagle is a wonderful object and a mediocre tool, and there is no shame in admitting which of those you want.

One last practical note. Every Desert Eagle in this list is the Mark XIX frame, which means .50 AE, .44 Magnum and .429 DE all interchange with a barrel and magazine swap. The .357 is on the same frame but uses a different bolt. Buying one gun and a second barrel is often cheaper than buying two guns, and it is the move most owners land on eventually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Desert Eagle cost in 2026?

Across our retailer network the Mark XIX runs from about $1,459 for a black .44 Magnum up to roughly $2,500 for a .429 DE or a premium finish. The .50 AE sits between about $1,467 and $2,246. Prices move with finish more than with calibre.

What is the cheapest Magnum Research gun?

The BFR revolver, which starts around $1,031. It undercuts every Desert Eagle in the range while chambering larger cartridges than any of them, which makes it the value pick of the brand by a wide margin.

Which Desert Eagle calibre should a first-time buyer get?

The .44 Magnum if you want the classic experience at a sane running cost, or the .357 Magnum if you plan to shoot it often. The .50 AE is the icon but ammunition runs $1.50 to $2.50 a round, which shortens most range sessions considerably.

Can you swap Desert Eagle barrels between calibres?

Yes on the Mark XIX frame. The .50 AE, .44 Magnum and .429 DE interchange with a barrel and magazine change. The .357 Magnum uses a different bolt, so it is not a straight swap from the larger three.

Is the Desert Eagle a practical gun?

No, and it does not pretend to be. It weighs around four and a half pounds loaded, costs a lot to feed, and needs full-power jacketed ammunition to cycle reliably. It is bought for what it is rather than what it does.

What is the .429 DE cartridge?

It is Magnum Research's own round, made by necking the .50 AE case down to .429 calibre. It drives a 240 grain bullet faster than .44 Magnum, but factory ammunition is made by very few companies and is difficult to find.

What does BFR stand for?

Magnum Research gives it as Biggest Finest Revolver. It is a stainless single-action available in cartridges including .45-70 Government, .460 S&W and .500 S&W Magnum, with long and short cylinder frames depending on the round.

Does Magnum Research make rifles?

Yes, a small line of .22 LR semi-automatics under the Magnum Lite name, including the SwitchBolt and SpeedShot. Dealer availability is very thin and they cost considerably more than a Ruger 10/22.
