You’ve got a Browning on the bench and you want to know how old it is. The serial number will tell you. The catch is that Browning has changed the way it numbers guns several times, so step one is working out which system you’re looking at.
Browning publishes a dating page for every model on its own site, 53 of them. We read each one, copied the serial ranges and codes onto this page, checked every line against a saved copy, and built a lookup on top so you don’t have to click through them all.
A heads-up before you start. Browning says outright that its early Auto-5 and Superposed records are thin, and a few of its own pages contradict themselves. Where that happens, we show you what Browning printed and tell you.
Quick answer
- Find the number. On a Citori it’s under the top lever. On a Hi Power it’s on the front of the grip frame, under the trigger guard. On an X-Bolt it’s on the right side of the receiver, ahead of the bolt handle.
- Look for two letters side by side. From 1976 on they are the year: Z is 1, Y is 2, X is 3, W is 4, V is 5, T is 6, R is 7, P is 8, N is 9 and M is 0. So ZM is 10, which is 2010.
- Type the whole number in below, letters included. Older guns use a year digit or a plain number instead, and the lookup reads those too.
Browning serial number lookup
It reads the same tables printed further down this page, which we copied from Browning’s Date Your Firearm pages. Browning calls some of its early numbers estimates, and we say so when they are. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Where to Find the Serial Number on a Browning
Browning’s dating pages say the number is found on the receiver on most guns and send you to the owner’s manual for the exact spot. So we went through the manuals. Here’s where each one puts it, in Browning’s wording.
| Model | Where Browning’s manual says the serial number is |
|---|---|
| Citori and Citori 725 | Under the top lever |
| Cynergy | Under the top lever |
| BT-99 | Under the top lever |
| A5, new model | On the right side of the receiver, below the bolt release button |
| Silver | On the left side of the receiver, above the trigger guard |
| Gold | On the left side of the receiver |
| BPS | On the right side of the receiver, at the bottom, near the front, just above the loading and ejection port |
| BAR MK 3 | On the left side of the receiver, above the trigger guard |
| X-Bolt, A-Bolt and AB3 | On the right side of the receiver, in front of the bolt handle |
| Lightning BLR | On the right side of the receiver, toward the rear |
| BL-22 | On the right side of the receiver, toward the front |
| SA-22 | On the lower rear of the right side of the receiver |
| T-Bolt | On the right side of the receiver, forward of the ejection port |
| Buck Mark pistol | Stamped on the left side of the frame, in front of the trigger guard |
| Hi Power | Stamped on the front of the grip frame, directly under the trigger guard |
| 1911-22 and 1911-380 | Stamped on the right side of the frame, above the trigger guard |

The manuals for the old guns don’t all say. On the Belgian Auto-5s we’ve handled, the number is on the underside of the receiver, just ahead of the loading port. On a Superposed it’s on the top tang under the lever, the same place as a Citori. Browning adds that the American-made Auto-5s from the Remington years carry it on the side of the receiver.
Copy down every character, letters and all, then read it again in good light. On a Browning the letters do most of the work, and a worn Z can pass for a 2.
How Browning Serial Numbers Work
Browning didn’t use one system. It used five, and which one you have depends on when the gun was made. This is the short version, with Browning’s own example for each.
| Years | What the serial number looks like | Browning’s example |
|---|---|---|
| Before 1958 | A plain number, sometimes with one letter in front | H83001, a 1956 Auto-5 |
| 1958 to 1968 | One year digit, then a letter for the model, then the number | 8M1000, a 1958 Auto-5 |
| 1969 to 1975 | Two year digits, then the model letter, then the number | 69C1000, a 1969 Hi Power |
| 1976 to 1997 | A number that starts at 01001 each year, a two-letter year code and a type code, in an order that changes by model | 137RT01001, a 1976 BAR |
| 1998 on | A five-digit number, the two-letter year code, then a three-character model code | 01001ZM115, a 2010 Maxus |
Source: Browning, Date Your Firearm model pages and its current serial number key, accessed October 10, 2026.
The first two systems are where most of the head-scratching happens. A number like 8M1000 looks like nonsense until you know the 8 is the year and the M is the model. From 1969 the year got two digits, which is a lot easier on the eyes.
One wrinkle is worth knowing if your gun came from Japan. Browning says that on many Miroku-built guns from 1973 through part of 1976 the two year digits are reversed, so 47 means 1974. The Citori page shows the same thing, with 37 for 1973.
The Browning Date Code: Two Letters for the Year
From the mid 1970s every Browning carries a two-letter year code inside the serial number. Each letter stands for one digit. Read them in order and you have the last two digits of the year.
| Letter | Digit |
|---|---|
| Z | 1 |
| Y | 2 |
| X | 3 |
| W | 4 |
| V | 5 |
| T | 6 |
| R | 7 |
| P | 8 |
| N | 9 |
| M | 0 |
Source: Browning, current serial number key, shown on its dating pages for current models. Accessed October 10, 2026.

So RT is 76, which is 1976. PV is 85, which is 1985. NN is 99, and ZM is 10, which Browning’s own key gives as 2010. Browning’s pages can’t agree on whether this system started in 1975 or 1976, but every example they give starts at RT.
The other characters tell you what the gun is. Before 1998 each model had a batch of type codes, one per grade or gauge, and the order changed from model to model. Some guns put the type code first, some put it last. Browning rebuilt the system in 1998 around a new database, and since then nearly every model has a single three-character code.
Model Codes on Current Browning Guns
For the guns in the catalog now, Browning’s dating pages give one line each: the model code. The year works exactly as above. If your X-Bolt reads 354 at the end, the two letters before it are the year.
| Model | Model code | Source |
|---|---|---|
| X-Bolt rifle | 354 | Browning page |
| AB3 rifle | 358 | Browning page |
| T-Bolt rifle, new model | 253 | Browning page |
| Buck Mark rifle | 213 | Browning page |

| Maxus shotgun | 115 | Browning page |
| Cynergy shotgun | 132 | Browning page |
| BT-99 trap shotgun, recent version | 171 | Browning page |
| A-Bolt shotgun, new version | 151 | Browning page |

Browning Auto-5 Serial Numbers
The Auto-5 is the hard one, and Browning admits it. Its page says very few records remain for the early guns and that the year of anything made before World War II is strictly a guess. All it offers for 1903 through 1939 is a range, from serial number 1 to about 228,000.
After the war the picture sharpens. Browning lists a serial range for each year from 1946 through 1953, then a run of letter prefixes for standard and lightweight guns. From 1958 the year is part of the number itself.

| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1903-1939 | 1 to about 228,000 | Browning says very few records remain and the year is strictly a guess |
| 1940-1946 | 229,000 to 237,000 for 1946 | Remington built the Auto-5 from 1940 to 1946. Its American-made guns carry an A for 16 gauge, a B for 12 gauge or a C for 20 gauge |
| 1947 | 237001 to 249000 | |
| 1948 | 249001 to 270000 | |
| 1949 | 270001 to 285000 | |
| 1950 | 285001 to 315000 | |
| 1951 | 315001 to 346000 | |
| 1952 | 346001 to 387000 | F.N. took production back |
| 1953 | 387000 to 438000 | Browning prints 387000 on both the 1952 and 1953 lines |
| 1954-55 | H1 to H83000 and L1 to L83000 | H is Standard Weight, L is Light Weight |
| 1956 | H83001 to H99000 and G1 to G23000 | The Light Weight letter changed from L to G |
| 1957 | M22000 to M85000 and G23001 to 85000 | M is Standard Weight, G is Light Weight |
| 1958-67 | G85001 to G99000, then 8G1 to 8G2000 | From 1958 one year digit comes first, then M or G, then the number. 8M1000 is a 1958 Standard Weight with serial number 1000 |
| 1968-76 | Two year digits, then M or G, then the number from 1000 | 69G1000 is a 1969 Light Weight 12 gauge with serial number 1000 |
| 1976-1997 | The number, the two-letter year code, then the type code. Browning's example: 01001RT151 | Type codes: 151 is Magnum 12 gauge; 161 is Magnum 20 gauge; 211 is Light 12 gauge; 221 is Sweet 16; 231 is Light 20 gauge |
| 1999 | 2000FT1001 | The Final Tribute guns. Browning reads 2000FT1001 as a Final Tribute 12 gauge made in 1999 with serial number 1001 |
Source: Browning, Date Your Firearm: Auto-5. Accessed October 10, 2026.
Watch the 1976 line. Browning’s separate page on where its guns are made says Auto-5 production moved from Belgium to Miroku in Japan that year, which is when the two-letter code starts. The last guns were the 1999 Final Tribute run, and Browning says only 1,000 were made.
Dating one is half the job. Our Browning Auto-5 buyer’s guide covers Belgian against Japanese guns, friction rings, steel shot and sold prices by model. A used Auto-5 starts at $695.99 with the sellers we track right now.
Browning Citori Serial Numbers
Browning says Citori production began in 1973. The first guns carry the number, a gauge letter and two reversed year digits. From 1976 they use the letter code, with the type code on the end telling you gauge, chamber and grade.
| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1973-75 | The number from 00001, then H, N or J, then two year digits | H is 12 gauge, N is 20 gauge, and J later covered both. Browning prints 37 for 1973 and 47 for 1974, so the two year digits are reversed. 00001H37 is a 1973 12 gauge with serial number 00001 |
| 1976-1997 | The number, the two-letter year code, then the type code. Browning's example: 1000RT153 | The type codes are in the next table |
| 1999-Now | The number, the two-letter year code, then the type code. Browning's example: 01001NN131 | Type code: 131 is All Citori Shotguns |

That type list is long because the Citori line was. Browning prints two of the codes twice with different wording, and we’ve left both in. From 1998 it’s simple: every Citori ends in 131.
We put 1,200 shells through the current gun for our Citori 725 review and 500 rounds through the sporting model for our Citori CXS review. A new Citori starts at $2,049.99 with the sellers we track.

Browning Hi Power Serial Numbers
Browning’s page covers the Hi Power from its U.S. launch in 1954. It warns that the numbers for 1954 through 1957 are estimates only, and that better records start in 1958. A military or police Hi Power sold by F.N. under its own name isn’t on this list at all.
| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1954-57 | 70000 to 80,000 | Estimates only. Browning says accurate production figures are unavailable |
| 1958 | 80001 to 85276 | Better records from here on |
| 1959 | 85268 to 89687 | Browning prints 85268 through 85276 on both the 1958 and 1959 lines |
| 1960 | 89688 to 93027 | |
| 1961 | 93028 to 109145 | |
| 1962 | 109146 to 113548 | |
| 1963 | 113549 to 115822 | |
| 1964 | 115823 to T136-568, as printed | The letter T came in as the Hi Power product code this year |
| 1965 | T136569 to T146372 | |
| 1966 | T146373 to T173285 | |
| 1967 | T173286 to T213999 | |
| 1968 | T214000 to T258000 | |
| 1969-75 | T258001 to 261000, then two year digits, C and the number from 1000 | 69C1000 is a 1969 Hi Power with serial number 1000 |
| 1976-1997 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 245RT01001 | Type codes: 2W5 is 40 S&W; 245 is 9mm |
| 1998 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 510NN01001 | Type code: 510 is Hi Power |
Source: Browning, Date Your Firearm: Hi Power. Accessed October 10, 2026.
The letter T arrives in 1964 as the Hi Power’s product code. In 1969 it gives way to the year-first format, so 69C1000 is a 1969 pistol. Under the two-letter system, 245 marks a 9mm and 2W5 marks a .40 S&W, a caliber Browning says it added in 1994.
If the lookup just told you yours is a 1960s gun, that’s the era collectors chase. Our guide to the best Browning Hi Power pistols covers what’s worth buying now, old and new.
Browning BAR Serial Numbers
This is the sporting BAR, the High-Power rifle, not the military automatic rifle. Browning’s page has the first two years backwards from everything else: on a 1967 or 1968 rifle the year digit comes after the M. From 1969 it comes before.
| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1967-75 | 1967-68: the number, then M, then one year digit. 1969-75: two year digits, then M, then the number from 1000 | On 1234M8 the 8 after the M means 68. 69M1000 is a 1969 BAR with serial number 1000 |
| 1976-1992 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 137RT01001 | Type code: 137 is BAR High Power Rifle |
| 1993-1997 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 107NX01001 | Type codes: 107 is BAR Mark II Safari; 1D7 is BAR Mark II Lightweight |
| 1998 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 311NN01001 | Type code: 311 is BAR Mark II |
Source: Browning, Date Your Firearm: BAR High-Power rifle. Accessed October 10, 2026.
The type code tells you the generation. 137 is the original rifle, 107 and 1D7 are the Mark II Safari and Lightweight that Browning introduced in 1993, and 311 covers the Mark II from 1998. We’ve got 400 rounds through the newest version in our BAR MK4 review.
Browning Buck Mark Serial Numbers
The Buck Mark is the easy one. Browning says it was introduced in 1985 and it has used the letter code from day one. The type code comes first, then the year letters, then the number.
| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1985-1997 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 655PV01001 | Type code: 655 is Buck Mark Pistol |
| 1998 | The type code, the two-letter year code, then the number. Browning's example: 515NN01001 | Type code: 515 is All Buck Mark models |
Source: Browning, Date Your Firearm: Buck Mark pistol. Accessed October 10, 2026.
One trap: 655 was also the code for the Challenger II and III, which Browning dates from 1976 to 1985. A 655 pistol with a year code earlier than 1985 is a Challenger. We shot 1,200 rounds for our Buck Mark review, and a new one starts at $399.99 with the sellers we track.

Browning Superposed Serial Numbers
Browning says the Superposed reached the U.S. market in 1931 and that U.S. distribution ended in 1986. Like the Auto-5, the prewar guns are a guess: one range, 1 to 17,000, for 1931 through 1939. No guns were made during the war.
From 1949 the 12 gauge and 20 gauge ran in separate number series, so you need to know the gauge before the number means anything. Browning calls all of these yearly numbers a best guess.

Superposed 12 Gauge, 1931 to 1962
| Years | Serial numbers | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1931-39 | 1 to 17,000 | Browning says exact figures are not available and the year is strictly a guess at best |
| 1939-1947 | None | Production stopped during World War II |
| 1948 | 17100 to 17200 | |
| 1949 | 17201 to 20000 | Best guess |
| 1950 | 20001 to 21000 | |
| 1951 | 21001 to 27000 | |
| 1952 | 27001 to 33000 | |

Superposed 20 Gauge, 1949 to 1962

What Browning’s Pages Don’t Cover
Browning is upfront about the holes. Its index page says records on early production models such as the Auto-5 and Superposed were left out because of the complexity of numbers, models and grades. It also says limited-edition guns that didn’t follow the regular serial number pattern aren’t included.
Two pistols get a page with no dating data at all. For the .32 caliber pistol, Browning says only that it was introduced in 1968 and that fewer than 1,000 were imported. For its plain .380 auto, the page gives the years 1954 to 1968 and nothing else.
We also couldn’t find a page for the F.N.-built High-Power bolt-action rifles in Safari, Medallion and Olympian grade. And remember that these are Browning’s records for guns Browning sold. An F.N. pistol that never went through Browning is a different search.
What the Serial Number Doesn’t Tell You
A year and a model. That’s all the number gives you, and people ask it for a lot more.
- What it’s worth. Browning doesn’t value guns. Its own answer to that question is a list of price guides, starting with the Blue Book of Gun Values. Condition sets the price, not the number.
- Where it was made. The date code doesn’t say. Browning’s advice is to read the barrel inscription, or the slide on a pistol. Most Brownings were made in Belgium by F.N. until the mid 1970s, when some production shifted to Miroku in Japan.
- Whether it’s original. A refinished or rebarreled gun keeps its number. The type code tells you what the gun left the factory as, and that’s a useful check against what it is now.
- Whether it’s stolen. No public list answers that, and this page doesn’t try. If you have doubts about a gun, call your local police or sheriff’s office and ask them to run the number.
How to Get an Official Date From Browning
Winchester owners can order a factory letter from a museum. We looked for the same thing at Browning and didn’t find one. Its dating pages, its contact page and its list of customer questions don’t offer a letter service or a paid records search.
What Browning does offer is free. Its answer to the question of when a gun was made is the serial number, the owner’s manual and the Date Your Firearm pages we worked from. If your gun isn’t on them, the next step is a call or an email.
- Write down the full serial number, the model name and the barrel inscription.
- Call Browning Customer Service in Morgan, Utah, at 800-333-3288, or use the email link on its contact page.
- Ask what the records show for that number. On a prewar Auto-5 or Superposed, expect an estimate, because Browning says that’s all the records support.
For a high-grade Superposed or an early Auto-5 where the year moves the price, get the gun in front of a specialist auction house or appraiser as well. They date these by engraving pattern, proof marks and features, which is outside what a serial number can do.
What It’s Worth, and Selling It
Now you’ve got the year. The next question is always money, and the honest answer starts with condition. Our gun values guide walks through the NRA condition grades and how to turn a grade into a price.
If you’re selling, put the year in the listing beside the model, gauge or caliber and barrel length. Our guide on how to sell a gun compares what each sales channel leaves in your pocket. For a private sale, print our free firearm bill of sale and copy the serial number onto it exactly as stamped, letters and all.
Browning and Winchester have shared a parent company since 1990, and plenty of gun safes hold both. If there’s an old lever gun next to your Auto-5, our Winchester serial number lookup works the same way as this page. And if you want the man behind most of these designs, start with our John Moses Browning profile.
Serial Number Lookups for Other Makers
Browning isn’t the only maker with a numbering puzzle. We’ve built the same kind of page for six others, each from the maker’s own records where they exist.
- Winchester serial number lookup: Winchester’s own year-end serial tables for the Model 94, Model 70, Model 12 and 30 more, plus how to order a Cody letter.
- Ruger serial number lookup: Ruger’s own year tables for the 10/22, Single-Six, Blackhawk, Mark II and Mini-14, with a quick year finder.
- Remington serial number lookup: The barrel date code on an 870, 700 or 1100 decoded, plus factory serial tables for the older models.
- Marlin serial number lookup: How to read the year from the serial prefix on a 336, a 39A or a Model 60.
- Colt serial number lookup: How Colt’s own lookup works, the serial ranges a public list puts years on, and what an archive letter costs.
- Smith & Wesson serial number lookup: No year chart exists for these, so it covers what the serial format tells you, the ATF list and how to get a factory letter.

Browning Serial Number FAQ
How do I find out what year my Browning was made?
Read the serial number. On guns made from 1976 on, look for two letters side by side: Z is 1, Y is 2, X is 3, W is 4, V is 5, T is 6, R is 7, P is 8, N is 9 and M is 0. Those two digits are the year, so PV is 1985 and ZM is 2010. Older guns use a year digit in front of a model letter, or a plain number you match to Browning's ranges. The lookup at the top of this page reads all of them.
What do the letters in a Browning serial number mean?
On a gun made since 1976, two of the letters are the year code, with Z through M standing for the digits 1 through 0. Any other letters are part of the type code, which gives the model, grade or gauge. On guns from 1958 to 1975 a single letter marks the model, such as M or G on an Auto-5, C on a Hi Power or S on a 12 gauge Superposed.
Where is the serial number on a Browning Citori?
Browning's owner's manual says it's under the top lever. Push the lever to the right as if you were opening the gun and you'll see the number on the top tang. The Cynergy and the BT-99 carry theirs in the same place.
How do I date a Browning Auto-5 by serial number?
It depends on the era. From 1946 through 1953 Browning lists a number range for each year. From 1954 to 1957 a letter prefix of H, L, G or M narrows it to a year or two. From 1958 the first digit is the year and from 1968 the first two digits are, so 69G1000 is a 1969 gun. From 1976 it uses the two-letter code. For guns made before World War II, Browning says the year is strictly a guess.
How do I read a Browning Hi Power serial number?
Browning lists plain number ranges by year from 1954 through 1963, and numbers with a T in front from 1964 through 1968. From 1969 the format is two year digits, a C, then the number, so 69C1000 is a 1969 pistol. From 1976 the number starts with 245 for a 9mm or 2W5 for a .40 S&W, followed by the two-letter year code. From 1998 it starts with 510.
What do the last three characters of a Browning serial number mean?
On a gun made since 1998 they're the model code. Browning's pages give 131 for every Citori, 354 for the X-Bolt, 115 for the Maxus, 116 for the new A5, 132 for the Cynergy and 515 for the Buck Mark, which carries its code at the front. The two letters next to the code are the year.
Can Browning tell me exactly when my gun was made?
For most guns made since 1958, the serial number already gives the year and Browning's dating pages show how to read it. For early Auto-5 and Superposed shotguns, Browning says its records are too thin to do better than an estimate. We found no factory letter service on Browning's site. For anything its pages don't cover, call Browning Customer Service at 800-333-3288.
Does the serial number tell me what my Browning is worth or if it was stolen?
No to both. The number gives a year and a model type. Browning doesn't value guns and points owners to published price guides such as the Blue Book of Gun Values. If you're worried a gun might be stolen, ask your local police or sheriff's office to check the number.
