Benelli M4 – From the Elite to Home Defense Shotgun
If there is anyone I would trust to test the Benelli M4 Tactical to destruction, it’s the US Navy and Marine Corps. Guns matter to them, like a lot.
The M4 Tactical is the combat service shotgun they rely on in the worst conditions. it needs to work with salt water in the air, mud and sand in the mechanism and just about everything else that can physically ruin a gun.
The Navy, Marine Corps and the rest of the Joint Services today use the Benelli M4 Tactical. That suggests you can rely on it when you really need it for home defense.
Military Tries To Ruin This Gun
This is the simple black synthetic stock version with the integral pistol grip.
You’re stuck with the classic nestled into the shoulder with this shotgun, but statistically that’s the best way to hit the target anyway.
But you can opt for a more expensive Benelli M1014 Tactical with an adjustable three-position stock.
That means you can nestle it into your shoulder as required, or keep it low and against your hip for close quarters.
That’s important, but it also looks tactical to the core. Even the pistol grip looks sexier on these guns, before we start on that black synthetic stock.
The Benelli M4 Shotgun Has Been Torture Tested
This is a gun that has been put through every torture test known to man. That’s in the lab and in the field.
This is a gun that the US Navy has taken to the depths of the jungle, the bottom of a swamp and most arid desert.
Every time, it has come up firing. That’s why this semi-auto shotgun takes pride of place in gun safes around the land. And in police cars, and just about everywhere else law enforcement agencies dare to tread. Most with the straightforward black synthetic stock.
So although it costs more than average, you know it won’t let you down. Battle-proven reliability is a big deal, and it tends to cost money.
Then again, your life should be worth investing in.
What Makes The Benelli M4 Shotgun Special?
The unique Auto Regulating Gas Operated semi-auto shotgun was designed in collaboration with the US Marine Corp. The Benelli M4 Tactical is the Combat Service shotgun for the joint services today and it’s a favorite with law enforcement and private security too.
It also comes with a Picatinny rail for mounting scopes or a red dot, an adjustable ghost-ring aperture rear sight and a winding adjustable front sight. Inevitably the pistol grip feels right from the off and the 18.5 inch barrel length is standard and hella accurate when shooting.
You can dress it up how you want with a light and even a more advanced sights. Most keep it simple for defensive shooting though.
You don’t really need to do anything to it. But of course you can and there’s a roaring trade in Benelli parts & accessories.
So if you need a new pistol grip, mag extension, a red dot or ghost ring sights for quick target acquisition, there are lots to choose from. Seriously, optics, scopes, night vision, ear protection. It’s all out there.
Reliability Wins, For Marines and Personal Defense
This is the Ferrari of the semi-automatic shotgun world, but it’s reliable too. That’s the real USP of Benelli’s unique auto regulating gas operated shotgun and why people pay up to four times the price of a cheap alternative.
Plain and simple, the Benelli M4 is the best shotgun in the world. If reliability and accuracy within the limits of the barrel length are your biggest deals.
Benelli M4 Tactical Alternatives
The Benelli’s weakness is always the capacity. This 12 gauge shotgun is a unique shooting experience, but you don’t even get that many shells, even with a magazine extension.
Now there are options, including box magazine fed shotguns, multi tube shotguns and more. So if you want to see just what a shotgun can do these days, check out these posts.
There are some seriously attractive semi-auto shotguns and Benelli alternatives these days. We’re particularly fond of box-mag fed 12 gauges that we think are the next generation.
The new breed of AK-based Kalashnikov semi-automatic shotgun come with a box mag that can be swapped out for a drum mag. That’s 20 rounds, 50 even, and that’s a big competitive advantage when shooting.
That’s available as a both a rifle and a long pistol barrel length, with everything from the pistol grip to a folding stock looking more like a 7.62×39 AK. But this is a semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun with insane capacity. That’s hot.
Save Money Too
Also look to the Mossberg 590M and Remington 870DM. They are tried and trusted tech, with a box magazine. They just make sense.
Cheaper Benelli rivals include the Beretta 1301 Tactical Competition and Mossberg 930 Tactical. You can find more detailed descriptions in this post about the best semi-automatic tactical shotguns for sale.
